CHAIR WELCOME 07
Giant Strides and an Inspiration… I don’t recall ever feeling the need to write a piece in our programme, but this is a special occasion. I have worked with Ruth throughout her whole time at Blackpool Grand Theatre and I wanted to make a few observations of my own. The theatre, under Ruth’s tenure, has made giant strides. When Ruth arrived, we had just secured our National Portfolio Organisations status, a relatively small, restricted grant to promote Contemporary dance. Since then, the award has grown and covers a great deal more of our work. We had a tiny team in creative learning, and we are now a major player on a national stage. Ruth has secured many other grants and built numerous relationships which I doubt we would ever have had an opportunity to make. Through that, we have enjoyed a tremendous variety in our programme on stage, and work in the community. Above all, Ruth has been an inspiration to the whole theatre team and gained the respect of all who have had the privilege to work alongside her.
Ruth will be missed, by board members and the theatre team, and her successor, Adam Knight has been carefully chosen to take the theatre forward and I wish him every success. I’m sure we will all be there to support him, and I am confident of our continuing success.

Father Brown
- The Murderer in the Mirror With John Lyons (A Touch of Frost, The Sweeney, The Onedin Line) as Father Brown A dramatic new whodunit by John Goodrum, based on the classic mysteries by G K Chesterton. Mild-mannered priest Father Brown always seems to be in the right place at the right time … if you count always being around when a murder is committed as being in the right place! When a famous actor is found dead just before the opening of his latest West End production, Father Brown – invited to watch the dress rehearsal – sees at once in the shattered dressing room mirror that all is not as it seems. And if all possible suspects were on stage at the time, watched by Father Brown, who could possibly be the murderer!

Dead Lies Dead Lies is a fast-moving, hard-hitting political English thriller from No.1 Best Selling Crime Novelist Hilary Bonner. Directed by critically acclaimed director Joe Harmston, the action takes place during a fiercely fought election campaign. The story follows Peter George, a politician who promises a new kind of politics beyond sleaze and spin. He is welcomed as a Messiah by the British public and expected to restore trust in a broken political system. But a shocking secret lies in the past of our country’s hero. As buried truths rise from the ashes, will his rise to power be destroyed by ghosts from another time? Personal and political influences begin to shake the faith of those closest to him, and a media cascade threatens to bring down Britain’s new saviour. How far will he go to save his own career, and how far will those around him go to save their own skins? Expect the unexpected. No one is safe.
“Hilary does that rare thing writing a thriller for the stage: like Agatha Christie, she puts psychology first, making Dead Lies the best sort of whydunnit.” Harmston

The Rise and Fall of Little Voice
Starring TV favourite Shobna Gulati (Coronation Street, Dinnerladies, Loose Women), British soap royalty Ian Kelsey (Emmerdale, Casualty) and ‘the girl of a thousand voices’ and two-time Drama Desk Award Nominee Christina Bianco This Olivier Award-Winning comedy-drama from Jim Cartwright has earned international acclaim across the globe, including a Golden Globe-winning smash-hit film starring Jane Horrocks and Michael Caine. Meet Little Voice and Mari Hoff. A mother and daughter central to the heart of this Northern fairy-tale, but as far apart in character as can be. Little Voice leads a quiet and unassuming life, seeking companionship and joy from music’s most iconic singers, whilst Mari prefers the sound of her own voice, indulging in a life of booze, cheap thrills and seedy men. Left to her own devices, LV starts to embody the famous divas she plays on repeat, swapping the grey backstreets of Northern England for the bright lights of Hollywood and Broadway, all from the safety of her own bedroom. When Mari starts dating small-time club owner Ray Say, LV’s astonishing impersonations of Shirley Bassey, Marilyn Monroe and Judy Garland to name a few, are thrust into the spotlight. Transformed and sensational, LV might just be Ray’s one and only chance to hit the big time, but what will the consequences be for mother and daughter? Cartwright’s timeless and iconic tale explores the highs and the lows of small-town dreams, family rivalry and finding your voice in a noisy world. With humour, heart and countless powerhouse ballads all performed live on stage, this life-affirming production will rouse even the weariest of souls.

MORE THAN JUST A THEATRE… At Blackpool’s Grand, it’s our mission to help people ‘enjoy, participate and learn through theatre’ and we do this, not just in the building, but all over the town, over the internet and, indeed, in some other parts of the country! Our Creative Learning team works with teachers, pupils, students, social workers, carers, support workers and artists across Blackpool. We also provide learning support materials for other theatres to share with the teachers and schools that they work with. You see, we believe that the best way to have the most impact is to work in partnership, sharing resources and good practice to achieve common goals. For instance, we’ve been working closely with Better Start and Head Start to help build the resilience of Blackpool young people. In and after school, we’ve designed and delivered many workshops which not only introduce participants to the joy and excitement of working closely with dancers, musicians, puppeteers, and painters; but which also build important life-skills like confidence, problem-solving and comprehension.
We are committed to building a life-long love of theatre. And every learning initiative we deliver is built around a visit to the Grand Theatre; a chance for new audiences to experience the thrill of live performance and have the chance to make theatre-going a part of their future. We actively seek out additional support to do this work and we are currently in receipt of grants from the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, the Goldsmiths Charity, and the Ragdoll Foundation. Their investment has helped fund three key initiatives for 2022: • A project for vulnerable young people / Story Squad; • A project to improve literacy and oracy / Tales Retold; • And a project for young people experiencing life in care / Illuminate. Because The Grand is more than just a theatre… it’s a local resource, here for people of all ages, tastes and backgrounds to enjoy, participate and learn through theatre. For more information, please visit blackpoolgrand.co.uk where you will find a wealth of information, live links and videos showcasing this important part of our work.
