THANK YOU! We would like to acknowledge our sponsors, many of whom have sponsored the theatre for over a decade.
Hello
I am extremely excited to introduce to audiences, old and new, the first season of work that I’ve been able to plan out for you to see, enjoy and take part in here at your very own theatre, The Grand. As you read through this new-look brochure you’ll find a rich mix of drama, dance, comedy and music to choose from. There are old favourites like Ken Dodd and the return of The Mousetrap, mixed in with things that I can guarantee Blackpool’s never seen before, like the smash-hit physical comedy BLAM! So, why the changes? I’ve spent my first six months here listening to audiences, artists, staff and trustees to try and understand what people want from The Grand. Two messages have come through loud and clear – quality shows that will excite and entertain, and a programme that will appeal to local people. It’s our goal to be the theatre of choice for the people of Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre; a community asset that is a local resource of national significance.
Local and national? Well, yes. The majority of what’s on offer is designed to give you a wide choice of art and entertainment and persuade you to dip into and enjoy a trip out to the theatre in Blackpool. It’s also designed to encourage local people, young and old, to take part, perform and learn new things through workshops, performances and after-show events designed to enhance their theatregoing experience. Some of the events on offer are there as part of our job to promote and develop innovative and interesting work. This gives audiences and artists the chance to see and enjoy work of national and international standing that, were it not for Arts Council England support, we could never afford to offer you and you might have to go all the way to London to see. That’s why, this season, we’re putting a theatre brochure through virtually every door in the FY postcode area. It’s also why you’ll find great ticket offers to make your visit the best value we can possibly offer and tempt you to come time and time again.
We wouldn’t be able to do all this if it weren't for the commitment of Blackpool Council and The Friends of the Grand. Not to mention the many, many people and businesses who offer their support, helping to keep this beautiful theatre open and operating, making memories for generations of local audiences to come. So, make yourself a brew, find a comfortable seat, and enjoy choosing your local summer and autumn entertainment. We look forward to welcoming you. Ruth Eastwood (Chief Executive) & Charlie (Furry Friend)

BLAM! Created by Kristján Ingimarsson // Neander
Jaw-dropping action sequences, slapstick comedy, awe-inspiring stunts and heaps of attitude combine to make one of the most high-energy physical theatre shows ever seen in Blackpool. In a dreary office four wage slaves invent a game to liven up their day and pass the time when the boss isn’t looking – BLAM! But what starts off with flicking paperclips and playing waste bin basketball rapidly escalates into an explosive showdown as they re-enact their favourite movie scenes, putting office life through the shredder and transforming it into a world of superheroes, aliens and classic blockbuster villains. Die Hard, Rambo, RoboCop, Apocalypse Now, E.T. – see how many film references you can spot as they pile upon each other at breakneck speed. If you’ve ever sat at work or in a classroom watching the clock and willing it to move, this is the show for you. And if you can find a way to have more fun than watching BLAM! it’s probably illegal! Performances have been set at various times so you can be sure to find a time that suits you – afternoon, early evening or after dinner; whatever time you come, you’ll have a Blam! 'One of the greatest, most exciting and brilliant shows I have ever seen. Honestly.' RICKY GERVAIS

Coppélia, The Nutcracker, Swan Lake
Friday 9 to Sunday 11 January
Coppélia Every toy has a story, especially in this charming comedy of errors, which is a witty combination of antics and abracadabra set in a doll maker’s workshop. This light-hearted tale of mistaken identity and confused lovers follows mischievous Swanilda, her impetuous suitor Franz and the eccentric toymaker Dr. Coppelius as they are brought to life by sparkling choreography and the animated score of Delibes. Coppélia is perfect for first-time ballet-goers, families and everyone in between.
Times Coppélia - Friday 7:30pm The Nutcracker - Saturday 2pm and 7:30pm Swan Lake - Sunday 2pm and 5:30pm
The critics said...'Dancing was sharp, precise and light of foot throughout…'
Tickets £25.50 to £39.50 Concessions £2 off Students/Under 18s £2 off Family Ticket £99
The Nutcracker The most famous of fantasy ballets for all the family begins when night falls on Christmas Eve. As snowflakes drift outside, the warm glow of the open fire sends flickering shadows across the boughs of the Christmas tree and all the presents beneath. When midnight strikes we are swept away to a fairy-tale world where nothing is quite as it seems: toy dolls spring to life, the Mouse-King and his mouse-army battle with the Nutcracker Prince and we travel through the Land of Snow to an enchanted place where the magic really begins. The critics said...'...the scenery turned the stage into a winter wonderland.'
Ballet Double Bill £65 Ballet Triple Bill £90
Swan Lake The greatest romantic ballet of all time is brought to life by Tchaikovsky’s haunting and unforgettable score. From the impressive splendour of the palace ballroom to the moon-lit lake where swans glide in perfect formation, this compelling tale of tragic romance has it all. From Odile, the temptress in black tulle, as she seduces the Prince by spinning with captivating precision, to the spellbound purity of the swan queen, Odette as she flutters with emotional intensity, the dual role of Odette/Odile is one of ballet’s most unmissable technical challenges. The critics said...'The production is a triumph.'

We are thrilled to welcome back English Touring Theatre to Blackpool following their memorable visits here with Anne Boleyn and Eternal Love. This time, they turn their hand to Shakespeare and one of the bard’s most glorious and popular comedies of twins, love and mistaken identities. A shipwreck separates twins who begin new lives unknowingly in the same land. Disguise and deception, unrequited love and confusion set the scene for this hilarious comedy of mischief, madness and infatuation. Fusing vivid story-telling with Director Jonathan Munby’s highly distinctive visual style, Twelfth Night includes some of Shakespeare’s best-loved characters, including Malvolio, Viola, Sir Toby Belch and Orsino. Dawn French
30 Million Minutes
Dawn French, the Queen of British Comedy, stars in her first ever solo tour 30 Million Minutes. Consisting of various delights and riches, with the odd irksome tribulation thrown in, Dawn takes audiences through the various lessons life has taught her, and the things she knows for sure.
Wednesday 3 September Time 7:30pm Tickets £30 to £39.50
The evidence is there for all to see. She is already three quarters certifiably daft. The other quarter is utterly bewildered. And the remaining quarter simply can’t do maths. With a sharp eye for comic detail and a wicked ear for the absurdities of life, Dawn French shares how she has misguidedly spent her whole life vigorously attempting to be a fully functioning female human. Her extraordinary lack of willpower, combined with an enviable knack for nosey parking and showing off, has driven her to grapple with the big stuff of life in public. 30 million minutes of life in fact. That’s how long she’s been alive. Catch the show. Or feel like a fool.

Ultima Vez
What the Body Does Not Remember
Soon To Be Announced March 2015
The amazing debut of Wim Vandekeybus and Ultima Vez in 1987 stunned the world of dance at the time. Vandekeybus and composers Thierry de Mey and Peter Vermeersch received the prestigious Bessie Award in New York. 28 years later and with a new cast, the show still stands as one of the most exciting pieces of dance ever made and is once again on an unmissable world tour. Vandekeybus’ first piece of choreography balances on the razor edge of attraction and repulsion. Dancers are driven to act and react at high speed and with split -second timing. Moments of humour thread through explosions of aggression, fear and danger in this adrenaline-fuelled distinctly physical performance. ‘Tough, brutal, playful, ironic and terrific.’ THE NEW YORK TIMES @dancetp The UK tour is funded by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and the Arts Council of Wales. Co-produced by KVS. Co-producers of the original performance Centro di ProduzioneInteatroPolverigi, Festival de Saint-Denis, Festival d’Eté de Seine-Maritime, ToneelschuurProdukties Haarlem.

The Grand is one of Britain’s premier heritage theatres, designed by the greatest of all theatre architects, Frank Matcham. When it opened in 1894 it was the first theatre in the country to be fully electric, using only electricity to power the lighting on stage and in the front of house areas. As a Grade II* listed building it is in the top eight per cent of all listed buildings in England and one of only 30 listed buildings in Blackpool. Little wonder it was dubbed ‘Matcham’s Masterpiece’. But The Grand is more than just a jewel of a building with a proud history. It is a dynamic powerhouse of art and entertainment, thrilling audiences today as it has for the last 120 years. With a varied programme of drama, dance, comedy, musicals, opera, variety, family and children’s work it provides something for everybody. The Grand also extends to communities outside the theatre building with an active creative learning and participation programme reaching schools, colleges and community groups across the region. The theatre is also proud to host the region’s leading amateur groups who take their place alongside the top class national and international companies on our stage. The Grand is your theatre. Come and be part of it.

Their support helps us to deliver their ambition to make a difference to the lives and prospects of people who live, work and learn in Blackpool and our ambition to offer people the chance to see, participate and learn through theatre. Arts Council England The Grand Theatre is one of Arts Council England’s National Portfolio Organisations, a network of organisations around the country that help the Arts Council to deliver on its mission of providing Great Art for Everyone. Currently in the second of a three-year

Forthcoming Audio Described performances: 1984 – Friday 3 October Twelfth Night – Friday 24 October The Mousetrap – Friday 7 November Regeneration – Friday 28 November Sleeping Beauty Pantomime – Saturday 13 December at 2:00pm
Forthcoming BSL Interpreted performances: Sleeping Beauty Pantomime – Saturday 13 December
AUDIO DESCRIPTION If you are blind or partially sighted, we don’t want you to miss out on anything that happens in the show. Our Audio Described performances give you a live commentary about the action happening on stage through a pair of headphones.
Like a narrator telling a story, a trained describer will tell you about the things you might not be able to see, describing body language, expressions and movements, so that you can keep up with the action. There is a live introduction, which will tell you about the characters, their costumes and the appearance of the set 15 minutes before the start of the show.
BSL INTERPRETED PERFORMANCES
Our BSL Interpreted performances feature an on-stage interpreter who converts the words into British Sign Language. BSL has a unique structure and syntax and the interpreter will spend several weeks learning a script before performing their translation.
TOUCH TOURS
To help you immerse yourself in the show as much as possible we offer touch tours before Audio Described performances (subject to visiting company approval) enabling you to explore the stage and get a feel of the set. If you’d like to experience a touch tour before you come along to the Audio Described performance, please let us know when you book your ticket.
WHEELCHAIR ACCESS
Wheelchair access to the stalls is through Stage Door Café Bar in Matcham Court (street level access). Lift access is no longer available to the dress circle.
ASSISTANCE DOGS
Recognised Assistance Dogs are welcome. A “Recognised Assistance Dog” is one which has been specifically trained to assist a disabled person and that has been qualified by one of the charitable organisations registered as members of Assistance Dogs UK. Assistance Dogs trained by members of Assistance Dogs UK will have formal identification and have been endorsed by the Department of Health, on the basis that the dog’s high standards of training, behaviour, health and welfare are such that it should be permitted to accompany its client, owner, or partner, at all times and in all places.
