SECONDARY

Creative Programmes for schools, young people and our local community Here at The Grand we do much more than just put shows on our stages. Across Blackpool and the Fylde Coast we offer high quality arts and education events, supporting the talent development of artists and young people. This could be in the guise of workshops or masterclasses provided by the professional artists who visit us; or bespoke programmes of work created to extend opportunities for young people to participate in or influence their cultural offer. Teachers, school children, young people, plus amateur and professional artists of all ages work together with The Grand to create extraordinary and memorable learning experiences. We are partners in three national programmes: the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Learning and Performance Network; Sadler’s Wells Breakin’ Convention dance programme; and National Theatre Connections. In addition, with special support from Curious Minds through Blackpool Council, the Youth Arts Programme happens in parks, libraries, galleries and youth centres to reach those young people who might not normally be able to enjoy or be involved in the arts.

DRAMA Touring Consortium Theatre Company and Royal & Derngate Northampton presents

A Tale of Two Cities

TUES 11 to SAT 15 OCT

Evenings 7:30pm, Thurs and Sat Matinees 2pm

By Charles Dickens, Adapted by Mike Poulton

'It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity...' Dickens considered his novel, A Tale of Two Cities the best story he had ever written. Interweaving one family’s intensely personal drama with the terror and chaos of the French Revolution, it is an epic story of love, sacrifice and redemption amidst horrific violence and world changing events. In an era of regime changes and citizen protest around the world, this bold new dramatic adaptation by Mike Poulton (Fortune’s Fool, Old Vic; Wolf Hall) set to rousing original music by Oscar-winning composer Rachel Portman (The Cider House Rules, Beloved) seems more relevant than ever. Directed by James Dacre ‘A lean punchy adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic tale of revolutionary France.’ THE DAILY TELEGRAPH Audio Described Friday 14 October 7:30pm POST SHOW

DRAMA

DANCE

James Wilton Presents Leviathan

In 2013 James Wilton was commissioned to choreograph a work for 50 professional dancers for performance at the opening and semifinal ceremonies of the Rugby League World Cup. It was seen by over 110,000 people. His most recent work Last Man Standing toured to over 60 venues since its creation in 2014 and has been seen by over 15,000 people. Wilton’s new piece Leviathan follows Ahab, a ship captain hell-bent on capturing the white whale: Moby Dick, a beast as vast and dangerous as the sea itself, yet serene and beautiful beyond all imagining. Ahab’s crew is drawn into the unhinged charisma of their captain, blindly following him on his perilous adventure towards almost certain destruction. Multi-award winning choreographer James Wilton re-imagines Herman Melville’s seminal novel, Moby Dick. Featuring a cast of 7, Wilton’s trademark blend of athletic dance, martial arts, capoeira and partnerwork, Leviathan will have you on the edge of your seat. It will leave you gasping for air under the sheer ferocity of movement, all accompanied by a powerful electro-rock soundtrack by Lunatic Soul. CURTAIN RAISER As part of the Grand’s ongoing commitment to artist development a new curtain raiser is to be performed by Edge Hill University dance students.

MUSICALS David Hutchinson, Phillip Rowntree and Stephen McGill for Sell A Door Theatre Company Ltd and Damien Tracey Productions Ltd present

Little Shop of Horrors

TUES 22 to SAT 26 NOV

Evenings 7:30pm, Thurs and Sat Matinees 2pm

A CHARMING, KOOKY AND HILARIOUS MUSICAL CULT CLASSIC Seymour Krelborn, the assistant at Mushnik's Flower Shop in downtrodden Skid Row, becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers a strange and exotic plant. He names it Audrey Two in order to impress glamorous Audrey, the colleague he’s secretly in love with. Audrey Two quickly starts to wilt, putting Seymour’s job and dream future with Audrey at risk. Accidentally pricking his finger, Seymour discovers Audrey Two needs a little more than plant food to thrive. The plant grows into a bad-tempered, foul-mouthed carnivore whose voracious appetite becomes increasingly difficult to satisfy. How far will Seymour go for the woman of his dreams? With music by the legendary Alan Menken, best known for his numerous Walt Disney film scores, Little Shop of Horrors is a cult film and one of the longest running off-Broadway shows of all time. This all new production is brought to The Grand by Sell a Door Theatre Company, who have rapidly gained a reputation for the high quality of their work and have previously toured critically acclaimed productions of Avenue Q, Footloose, American Idiot and Seussical the Musical across the UK. Directed by Tara Wilkinson, whoSE credits as Associate Director include the West End hits Memphis the Musical, Sunday in the Park with George and Hairspray and tours of Sister Act and 9 to 5.
