FRIENDS

Welcome Welcome to the new season at Blackpool’s Grand Theatre and the chance to enjoy a huge variety of dance, drama, musicals and comedy throughout the coming months.

friendsofthegrand.co.uk

The Friends of The Grand are a passionate group of theatre-lovers who, over the years, have raised millions of pounds and volunteered thousands of hours to help the theatre operate and improve.

As many of you will know, we’ve got the builders in at the moment and they’re working hard to create improvements to the entrance and foyer of the theatre, as well as to dressing rooms and offices. But that’s not stopping us offering you a great programme of entertainment! However, I would like to ask you to bear with us during July and August when the work in the Box Office area will mean that the main entrance to the theatre will be restricted. We’ve got a ‘traffic management plan’ in place and we’ll do our very best to ensure your arrival and departure are as smooth and easy as possible - and that the show in between is the most memorable part of your visit!

You’ll see our Friends ushering you to your seats or serving you tea and coffee. They also organise raffles and events to raise much-needed funds. But it isn’t all hard work. If you become a Friend of The Grand you’ll benefit from offers, discounts and advance booking that will make your theatre-going experience both more enjoyable and affordable. Our Friends even host regular coffee mornings with a guest speaker – the perfect opportunity to meet other members. Whether you’d like to make new friends, help the theatre, or snap up the discounts – you can become a Friend of The Grand by calling 01253 743340 or visiting the website. ilable to anyone FULL ADULT Ava 18 and under 60 MEMBERSHIP over membership is only

September will also see a number of other changes including a new, friendlier and faster website, smart new uniforms and improved technology for customers who use the Audio Description facility. All things to look forward to. In the meantime, sit back and relax as you browse through the great shows on offer. I’m confident that there’s something for everyone this season, and whether you’re a new customer or an old friend, I look forward to welcoming you to the glorious Grand Theatre. It’s 1963 and the world is changing. Bobby and Laura’s first single Dreamboats and Petticoats went to the top of the charts – but they haven’t been able to repeat that success with any further records. Norman and Sue have settled down to non-marital bliss – and a baby! But Ray and Donna seem blissfully happy… The advent of the Beatles and the Merseyside sound is inspirational. But will it inspire Bobby and Laura to have one more shot at stardom, Norman to find that singing voice he has longed for, and Ray to realise his ambition and manage a really top pop act? All will be revealed in a follow up with the same wit, charm, and great songs as Dreamboats and Petticoats. Many of the songs are from the next period in pop history... Including the smash-hits... A Picture of You, All I Have to Do Is Dream, Do You Love Me, Handy Man, It’s In His Kiss, It’s My Party, When Will I be Loved, Hippy Hippy Shake and many more...

The Snow Maiden Protected from the outside world by Father Frost, the exquisite Snow Maiden plays innocently amongst the dancing snowflakes in the enchanted Land of Frost. Based on a traditional folk-tale, this ballet is set in the snow covered landscape of rural Russia. Captivated by the colourful village of the human world, the Snow Maiden ventures too far and is swept up by feelings of love, temptation and betrayal. When finally she surrenders herself completely and warms to love, her heart melts in a tragic embrace. The Nutcracker The most famous of fantasy ballets for all the family begins as night falls on Christmas Eve. As snowflakes drift outside, the warm glow of the open fire sends flickering shadows across the boughs of the Christmas tree and all the presents beneath. When midnight strikes we are swept away to a fairy-tale world where nothing is quite as it seems: toy dolls spring to life, the Mouse-king and his Mouse-army battle with the Nutcracker Prince, and we travel through the Land of Snow to an enchanted place where the magic really begins. Accompanied by The Orchestra of the Russian State Ballet conducted by Anatoly Tchepurnoi. @RaymondGubbay #GuiDANCEonline

We successfully piloted a dance bus opportunity for undergraduate dance students. Over 20 teachers were inspired by our Traditional Tales opportunity to engage children and young people with the stories behind shows including Sleeping Beauty and Hansel + Gretel. International dance company Ultima Vez’s performance at The Grand was an opportunity for our local ‘Everybody Dance Now’ artists to engage with 60 regional undergraduate students and enhance their engagement with the show. Funding Partners Like most regional theatres, The Grand relies on funding from various sources. Our principle funders are the Arts Council England and Blackpool Council. We also work in partnership with a number of organisations, designed to enhance the programme and maximise resources. Blackpool Council Blackpool Council has been a long-standing partner of The Grand. Their support helps us to deliver their ambition to make a difference to

2.2% the lives and prospects of people who live, work and 3.5% learn in Blackpool and our ambition to 4.5% offer people the chance to see, participate and learn through 8% theatre.

GRAND Our Audience

The Grand is one of Britain’s premier heritage theatres, designed by the greatest of all theatre architects, Frank Matcham. When it opened in 1894 it was the first theatre in the country to be fully electric, using only electricity to power the lighting on stage and in the front of house areas. As a Grade II* listed building it is in the top eight per cent of all listed buildings in England and one of only 30 listed buildings in Blackpool. Little wonder it was dubbed ‘Matcham’s Masterpiece’.
