Welcome

You may have read in The Gazette that The Grand will be undergoing some refurbishment this spring, with improvements to the foyer area starting at the end of January. But that’s not going to stop us offering you a great choice of drama, dance, music and comedy! With more than fifty different events to choose from, there’s plenty to keep you, your family and friends entertained and inspired over the coming months. There will, of course, be some disruption whilst the building work takes place. We plan to keep this to an absolute minimum and would ask you to bear with us because, when the work’s complete, you’ll be able to benefit from better box office facilities and better access to the auditorium from the ground floor. This will especially help those who use wheelchairs, as a new platform lift will make it possible to enter the stalls without the need to brave the elements and go around the outside of the theatre to get in! Other improvements are behind the scenes with better dressing rooms, offices and a new multi-purpose space for meetings, workshops and classes. These should all be completed by September and we look forward to inviting you to have a look around when it’s done.

to the new season at Blackpool Grand So, back to the here and now. This season we welcome back a number of companies who haven’t been to Blackpool for many years – English Touring Opera and DV8 Physical Theatre. Northern Ballet, who have been entertaining our youngsters with their popular fairy tale ballets for the past few years, are bringing a ballet programme for grown-ups for the first time since 2000. The RSC bring their raucous comedy A Mad World My Masters; Shakespeare’s forgotten rock ‘n’ roll musical Return to the Forbidden Planet is set to have you dancing in the aisles; and the hit book and film, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, comes to the stage for the first time. All this and Count Arthur Strong too! We look forward to giving you a warm, warm welcome, time and time again. Ruth Eastwood (Chief Executive) Book for 2 dance productions pay just £35.00 (saving £4), Book for 3 pay just £51.00 (saving £7.50). The History Boys By Alan Bennett

Set in the 1980s, The History Boys is the story of a group of bright, funny and unruly sixth-formers in pursuit of sex, sport and a place at university. Staffroom rivalry and the anarchy of adolescence overflow, provoking insistent questions about history and how you teach it. Their A-Levels may be over, but their true education is only just beginning. This brand-new production from the producers of Avenue Q UK Tour, Spring Awakening UK Tour and Seussical West End is a hilariously funny and exceptionally moving play about the true purpose of education. JOHN

Thursday 12 to Friday 13 March

JOHN is the new dance-theatre work from the internationally renowned DV8. It’s a study of one man’s search for love and his desire for a new life.

Time 7.30pm

Based on frank, real-life interviews, JOHN explores attitudes to love and sex and tells an extraordinary true story of crime, abuse and drug use. It’s a disturbing story, beautifully told. The words, the movement and the ever-changing set are mesmerising, making this an intensely moving theatrical experience. Here’s what the Daily Telegraph said ‘You will never see anything like a work by Lloyd Newson. His combination of verbatim theatre and sinuous, metaphorical movement is bold, involving and utterly unique…see it, you will never forget it’. City AM said ‘John’s story is contemporary theatre at its most crucial, creative and compelling.’

AUDIO DESCRIPTION If you are blind or partially sighted, we don’t want you to miss out on anything that happens in the show. Our Audio Described performances give you a live commentary about the action happening on stage through a pair of headphones. Like a narrator telling a story, a trained describer will tell you about the things you might not be able to see, describing body language, expressions and movements, so that you can keep up with the action. There is a live introduction, which will tell you about the characters, their costumes and the appearance of the set 15 minutes before the start of the show.

BSL INTERPRETED PERFORMANCES

Our BSL Interpreted performances feature an on-stage interpreter who converts the words into British Sign Language. BSL has a unique structure and syntax and the interpreter will spend several weeks learning a script before performing their translation.

TOUCH TOURS To help you immerse yourself in the show as much as possible we offer touch tours before Audio Described performances (subject to visiting company approval) enabling you to explore the stage and get a feel of the set. If you’d like to experience

a touch tour before you come along to the Audio Described performance, please let us know when you book your ticket.

WHEELCHAIR ACCESS

Wheelchair access to the stalls is through Stage Door Café Bar in Matcham Court (street level access). Lift access is no longer available to the dress circle.

ASSISTANCE DOGS

Recognised Assistance Dogs are welcome. A “Recognised Assistance Dog” is one which has been specifically trained to assist a disabled person and that has been qualified by one of the charitable organisations registered as members of Assistance Dogs UK. Assistance Dogs trained by members of Assistance Dogs UK will have formal identification and have been endorsed by the Department of Health, on the basis that the dog’s high standards of training, behaviour, health and welfare are such that it should be permitted to accompany its client, owner, or partner, at all times and in all places.

GRAND Access & Accessible Performances
