DEAR THEATREGOER
As the theatre programmer, I’m not supposed to have favourites. My job is to select a wide variety of arts and entertainment to suit all ages and tastes. But this season, I can’t help myself…if you only get one chance to come to The Grand this year make it Running Wild by Michael Morpurgo. This fantastic production comes to us from London’s Regent’s Park Theatre where it played to packed houses last summer. It tells the story of a young girl called Lilly and what happens when she gets the chance to ride on an elephant called Oona.

AGE GUIDANCE
My team had the privilege of seeing the show before I booked it to come here and they were, quite simply, blown away by the amazing performances and magic of this exquisite and touching show. Oona is a huge puppet created by members of the extraordinarily talented team who designed War Horse in the West End. And she is joined by a menagerie of puppet friends in this evocative adventure about love, loyalty and loss. Don’t miss it.
PS. I just want to say a special ‘thank you’ to the Friends of The Grand who have raised funds to replace our very out-of-date lighting board, enabling us to keep up to date with the technologies that visiting theatre companies require nowadays. Thank you, Friends. We couldn’t do it without you!

DRAMA The Touring Consortium Theatre Company presents a Birmingham Repertory Theatre production
Anita And Me
TUE 7 to SAT 11 MAR
Evenings 7:30pm, Thurs and Sat Matinees 2pm
By Meera Syal. Adapted by Tanika Gupta
Meera Syal’s much-loved novel bursts into life on a UK tour after a sell-out run at Birmingham Rep and Stratford East in 2015. This poignant coming-of-age tale follows Meena, a young girl growing up in the only Punjabi family in a 1970s Black Country mining village. Meena spends her days happily getting into scrapes with the other local children until one day the impossibly cool Anita enters her life. Suddenly Meena knows exactly who she wants to be but is Anita all that she seems? Soon Meena’s world is turned upside down as she is caught between two very different cultures. Anita And Me paints a comic, poignant, compassionate and colourful portrait of village life in the era of flares, power cuts, glam rock, decimalisation and Ted Heath. It has been adapted for the stage by the multi-award-winning Tanika Gupta from the bestselling book by Meera Syal. Meera is an acclaimed comedian, actress and writer whose TV credits include the BBC comedy series Goodness, Gracious Me and The Kumars at No. 42. Dancing at Lughnasa
WED 28 JUN to SAT 1 JUL
by Brian Friel
In the mid-1930s, in the rural village of Ballybeg County Donegal, live the Mundy girls; five sisters united in their struggle to survive, and in their sense of family identity. Kate, the eldest of the family, is a school teacher but the rest get by with piecemeal work and frugal living. When the harvest festival of Lughnasa comes around, it is an opportunity for the girls to forget life’s cares for the briefest time and lose themselves in the joy of celebrating simply being alive... Dancing at Lughnasa is at once heart-wrenching and heart-warming; a poignant yet inspiring portrait of a family bound together by love for each other and a refusal to let adversity quench their spirit. @PoultonDrama

In 1964, a new phenomenon exploded onto the dingy British streets. It was the essence of all that was cool. It was Mod. Mods stuck two fingers up at the class-ridden society and its dull redundant culture. They were working-class free spirits who rode sexy streamlined Italian Vespas or Lambrettas.

Made in Dagenham Made in Dagenham is set in 1968 in Essex, highlighting a community of loyal working class solidarity. The women of Ford Dagenham go on strike following a proposal to downgrade their skill set and, subsequently, their pay. This then highlights the massive inequality between men and women in the workplace when doing the same job. Rita, an ordinary working class mum of two, and machinist for the plant, almost by accident finds herself leading the fight for justice. The girls go on strike and, in a stand of unity, the Ford machinists from the Liverpool plant also join the cause. Despite the U.S. executives of Ford trying to fight the girls by ‘laying off’ the men and causing hardship for many families, the girls win out and Harold Wilson’s administration (led by MP Barbara Castle) pass a law to promise equal pay. The musical is based on a true story and is heart-warming, uplifting and inspiring. It includes some classic British banter, plenty of comedy, uplifting musical numbers and some moments of tenderness and sobriety. Made in Dagenham has a bit of everything. @BOP1953

DANCE THEATRE Mark Murphy’s V-TOL presents
Out Of This World Out Of This World is genre-defying action packed theatre from acclaimed writer and director Mark Murphy. Set within a world of projected film and animation, it combines his signature mix of groundbreaking aerial choreography, original text and explosive special effects in a show that is both intense psychological thriller and heart-rending medical drama. This is the story of a woman’s woozy descent into the depths of a medically induced coma. Once safely cocooned, her crashed imagination takes over the show - creating a vivid inward cinema in which she reviews her life. But after discovering a shocking truth and with the medical team moving in for the kill, she must escape her subterranean safe house in a very real fight for life. @OOTW_Tour AGE GUIDANCE

The Grand Young Company and National Theatre Connections present
Zero for the Young Dudes! by Alistair McDowall
Connections is the National Theatre’s nationwide Youth Theatre Festival. Each year it offers a unique opportunity for youth theatres and school theatre groups to stage new plays written for young people by some of theatre’s most exciting playwrights, and to perform in leading theatres across the country. The inmates at a bizarre summer camp are plotting a revolution. Or has it already happened? Spending a day watching their schedule of exercise, lessons and meals, a long history of unrest and injustice lies hidden, and as the day wears on, a violent future looms large on the horizon. Blackpool and The Fylde College Level 6 BA (Hons) Musical Theatre Students present
Join young people from 9 schools across Wyre as they come together to tell Julius Caesar, Shakespeare’s wonderful story of conspiracy, death and power struggles.
Following the success of Sweet Charity, Little Women and Crazy for You, the third year BA (Hons) Musical Theatre students of Blackpool and The Fylde College proudly present the hit musical, The Pajama Game.
Julius Caesar is a fantastic celebration of the achievements of children and young people involved in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Learning and Performance Network, a long term programme where schools work with artists and practitioners from the RSC and The Grand.
Join us in 1950’s America, where tempers fly at the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory when employees are denied a seven-and-a-half cents pay rise. The Pajama Game features the show-stopping numbers There Once Was a Man, Hey There (You With the Stars in Your Eyes), Hernando’s Hideaway and Steam Heat.
