Project Statement
“Celebrating the spirit of the game of soccer through the built environment.”
Our core philosophy is expressing the natural spirit of sports that flows through all of us into a physical form for our building

Keta Sandlanders Football Club
SPRING 2020 ARCH 609 STUDIO
Located in Keta, Ghana, Africa, this football club was built as volunteer work for Architecture for Humanity London. It is a place that provides local youth a place to foster sporting skills, a place for community activities, as well as guidance on sustainable farming techniques. Local contractors as well as the local community will construct the new centre out of earthbags, a simple solution to the expense of imported material and the lack of good soil on the site. It can be rendered to give the appearance of concrete block, an aesthetic concern that we have struggled with when specifying sustainable materials in Ghana.

SPRING 2020 ARCH 609 STUDIO
The centre is composed of two major elements: the inner, shaded area, and the outer wall and roof, sheltering the inner meeting area from the direct sun of the western and eastern aspects. The wing shaped roof orientated to the prevailing winds accelerates the airflow across the ceiling creating negative pressure that draws hot, stale air out from the meeting area. This is further assisted by the latticework wall enclosing the meeting room, a pattern directly related to the traditional patterns of the area for ‘male’ and ‘female’ fishing nets. At night, light filtering through the lattice will act as a beacon for the community in the lightly developed village.

Nike Football Training Centre
SPRING 2020 ARCH 609 STUDIO
Situated in the heart of Soweto, the Football Training Centre is the centre of football in South Africa, where 1200 teams and 20,000 footballers will play each year. In less than 6 months, the facility was transformed into a state of the art football training centre — the first of its kind in Africa. The facility encompasses 2 new full sized artificial pitches, 2 junior turf pitches, new lighting, a clubhouse & player lounge, an education facility for the Grass Roots Soccer & Life Skillz program, a training gym, a physio & first aid facility, a product trial, catering , administrative offices, a viewing deck and new change rooms.

SPRING 2020
A locally-sourced South African timber louver structure suspended from the steel acts as a sun screen on the east, north and west facades, protecting the building from solar heat gain. The building is cantilevered over the edges of the two main fields, creating a shady area that keeps the the gym, kitchen and trial areas cool.
ARCH 609 STUDIO
Due to the project’s tight turnaround time, RUFproject decided to forgo incorporating more complicated green strategies and instead focused on more basic principles, like sun shading, natural ventilation, and reduced energy loads. The rectangular, three-story building is constructed out of steel and features a double-walled air cavity covered with locally-sourced sandstone that acts as a rain screen. It is oriented to the east and west to take advantage of the northern solar aspect.

The Barn
SPRING 2020 ARCH 609 STUDIO
Currently under construction, The Barn is the pilot project for The Bridge District in the City of West Sacramento, CA — a new 178-acre mix-use neighborhood one mile from the California State Capitol. Positioned along the Sacramento River, The Barn is a multi-use structure that blurs the disciplinary boundaries of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Structural Engineering. This is an important precedent because we want the roof structure to resemble this.

Rotterdammerstrasse Housing
SPRING 2020 ARCH 609 STUDIO
In DĂźren, open central courtyards were created as communal space, which produces an urban intimacy within the perimeter block. The roof forms a shelter, an umbrella of sorts able to house a plethora of building heights and dwelling types. It forges all these differences into a single urban entity. This is an important precedent for us because we want to place most of our building program under one roof.
