LOCATION INFORMATION
PROJECT TYPE: MIXED-USE RESIDENTIAL STUDIO 508: KADIM AL ASADY DATE: SPRING 2018 LOCATION: MUMBAI, INDIA
Worli Koliwada sits on the northern tip of Worli, one of the seven original islands of Mumbai. Some of the village’s current inhabitants are direct descendants of the Koli that predate the Portuguese, who took control of the islands in 1534.

There are nearly 40 koliwadas (fishing villages) in Mumbai, many of which are under threat due to steady declines in annual catch and competing development interests. In a city where land is regarded as the most precious resource, it may only be a matter of time before Worli Koliwada is replaced by more profitable ventures.

Bringing together the community of Worli is the intended ideal of this dwelling. As they share resources and mitigate the human impact on the environment they will become less like individuals, and more like a compound community. Residents and guests from a wide range of diverse background including social and economic lifestyles will come together to live, play and work in concord.

The design of this dwelling will be a direct extension of the surrounding environment and climate of the site. Like the Indian Ocean, the building will shape itself by studying the contours of the natural waves as they approach the land. Since fishing is their main source of income, the docks have been a high priority for this project. The focus was not only on the design, but by the functionality as well. Bringing the building and docks, together has given a mirroring effect towards their design.

PROJECT TYPE: Renovation STUDIO 509: Keith Van de Riet DATE: Fall 2019 LOCATION: Weaver Courtyard, University of Kansas
The 509 design-build studio of professor Keith van de Riet was challenged with the task of renovating the Weaver Courtyard adjacent to Spooner Hall. The courtyard that has been on the campus that originally was used as the sculpture garden for Spooner Hall when it was an art museum for the University of Kansas. The students of the studio took it upon themselves to redesign the courtyard to invite students, faculty, and visitors to relax, reflect and unwind from daily life. To assist the courtyard users in relaxing, the layout of the space is symbolically reflected of the 5 Elements of Nature. Incorporating Air, Earth, Wind, Fire and Spirit elements into the design we gain a closer understanding of nature and how humans have interacted with them throughout existence. The Analemma Sundial represents the Fire element of the 5. By creating a sculpture that not only is aesthetically pleasing on the eye but is also able to interact with the actual host element, we learn more about how humans studied the Sun and used it to develop and track time.

If you take a picture of the Sun from the same spot a the same time every day for a year, it follows the shape of a slightly oblong figure eight, with one loop broader than the other. This is called the Sun’s Analemma curve. Earth orbits around the Sun on an elliptical path. Earth also revolves around the Sun on a slant; it has an axial tilt of around 23.5 degrees. These two factors combine to generate the figure eight Analemma curve.
In the case of the Analemma Sundial the shadow highlights circular markers that are placed on the ground directly north of a large piece of Cottonwood limestone. The limestone piece, standing at approximately 6 feet tall, incorporates a 1/2 inch wide vertical slot that invites sunlight through and then projected onto the ground, thus creating the sundial. The gnomon of the stone that typically identifies the time of the day, highlights the 21st of each day at noon.

A sundial is a device that tells the time of day when there is sunlight by the apparent position of the Sun in the sky. As the Sun appears to move across the sky, the shadow aligns with different hour-lines, which are marked on the dial to indicate the time of day.

Since the rough texture of the stone made it difficult to mount a drill guide directly to the stone, the jig was used to aide the drill bit. The jig, made of lumber and steel, was needed to drill the appropriate holes in order to split and remove the “V shaped portions of the limestone. This revealed the 1/2 inch vertical slot that runs 2/3 the height of the stone. The drill holes required strict tolerances so that the structural integrity of the stone was not compromised.
28
02 ANALEMMA SUNDIAL
The sled is what makes the drilling process possible. Four pieces of 1 1/4 angle iron were welded together like an H.

PROJECT TYPE: Mixed Use Residential STUDIO 608: Kadim Al Asady DATE: Fall 2019 LOCATION: Kansas City, KS
In Kansas City, KS on 8th St. and Washington and Minnesota are three lots of roughly 40,000 sqft. For my 608 studio we were tasked to design a mixed use building for apartments and a few commercial spaces as well.a The main driving force for this project in this area that is already a very commercialized site, is to bring a sense of community and safety to the future residents of the mixed use building.
GRANT BECHTEL
By establishing a walkable space along the outside edges of the building primeter, while giving comfortable space for the residential units on the ground floor, this promotes a friendly environment that encourages socializing.

After several design iterations, sketches and lots of time spent
2020
working on digital modeling, I came to this conclusion. The main materials for this project are mass timber and concrete but of the two, CLT is the heart of the building. With a soft and warm look that the wood gives off, I designed the majority of the residential side of the building with timber. The commercial side of the building is very open and exposed with lots of glass walls and concrete structure, making them both suitable for their respective duties. The shop that I choose is McLain's Market, with one location already in Kansas City and another in Lawrence, I thought that it would make a fine choice for a shop in a setting like this. Promoting a safe, social and entertaining not attract any unwanted clientel. The residential section of the building however is very closed off aside from the exterior sides of the building where the private balconies are for the residents to enjoy the great views of Kansas City, KS. In the coming pages you will see more of the building such as the redesigned 8th st. block that will run the entire lenght of

atmophere as well as serving some food and drinks that do
all three lots. A proposal of extending said design is definitely an option but for the purpose of this studio they will only be shown in our site area. 8th St. is currently a 4-lane road with paralell parking on each side and a 40 mph speed limit. After researching the different urban planning options with regards to road design I concluded that reducing the number but now adding bike share lanes on each side encourages a number of things. One, reducing the number of lanes and narrowing the lane width causes people to drive slower, which in turn reduces the likelness of a crash or accident involving a pedestrian. Also by adding the bike lanes will give residents
GRANT BECHTEL
of lanes down to two while keeping the parking availability,
as well as local pedestrians in the area space to ride their bikes around from place to place. Lastly I wanted to note the green spaces that were kept along the sidewalk area. By widening the sidewalk and still incorporating grass along the way pays tribute to the neighborhood feeling that I wanted to keep present.
