AUGUST 2014 EXHIBITIONS SHOWING 9TH UNTIL 30TH AUGUST 2014

I WANT TO SEE HOW YOU SEE ELAINE STORER OLIVER SIDAWAY

I WANT TO SEE HOW YOU SEE This August the Grant Bradley Gallery presents a curated exhibition of photography selected from a diverse group of artists living and working in the Bristol region. The exhibition encompasses works of contemporary portraiture, landscape and social documentary. With no given theme, each artist displays the work that best represents themselves. Perhaps one of the most debated creative disciplines, photography’s position as a serious artistic medium still remains a widely discussed subject. Following the digital camera revolution and proliferation of the internet, it is no longer necessary for photographers to be bound by a complex understanding of the camera’s mechanics. From a positive point of view this leaves photographers free to use the camera purely as a tool to express their ideas and creativity. The contemporary photographer is challenged to both gain recognition within their chosen medium and the art fraternity as well as creating pieces that engage a discerning audience already experienced with photographic imagery.

ELAINE STORER Born in Glasgow, Elaine painted her first portrait at the age of 15. After travelling over the UK working as a dresser and theatrical wardrobe assistant, Elaine moved to Wales where she attended Barry College Art School. Elaine now lives in Spain where she paints and also teaches art to multicultural students. ‘I love to work with every creative medium but my preference is with oil. I especially enjoy painting peoples’ portraits but I also love expressionism.’

OLIVER SIDAWAY An impromptu exhibition of some recent and older paintings by Oliver Sidaway following on from his recent appearance at NV4. Oliver’s pictures depict the atmospheric qualities of local Bristolian landscapes. Traditional in style with a modern twist, photographic yet at the same time rich in oil paint texture Oliver’s paintings have proved popular with local audiences over the past ten years.
