FEBRUARY EXHIBITIONS SHOWING 8TH FEBRUARY UNTIL 1ST MARCH 2014

Three exhibitions will be on display for the month of February and you're personally invited to attend the private view for these shows. We're proud to represent Angie Kenber with a solo exhibition titled 'Beyond the Land' in the main gallery space. Angie's beautifully created abstract landscape paintings evoke contemplation and serenity. Photographic duo Patrick Coughlan and Claudio Ahlers will be displaying work on the mezzanine level with an exhibition titled 'Constructed', which is a collection of photographic images that explores human interaction within the urban environment. A contemporary and unique approach to street photography, these photographs imbue a sense of humour and subtle playfulness. Finally Hungarian painter Tamas Szikszay will display a recently completed project of figurative works. Influenced by personal experiences, Tamas's slightly surreal paintings explore the existential aspects of everyday life.

BEYOND THE LAND AN EXHIBITION OF ABSTRACT PAINTINGS BY ANGIE KENBER

Working in St. Ives last October, overlooking Porthmeor Beach, I noticed how the line between sea and sky is sharply defined in bright sunlight, yet fades away so as to be barely perceptible in wild weather. Hidden or obvious, to me the horizon is a reassuring constant which divides, and also creates contrast, juxtaposing variations of land, sea and sky. I look up at the horizon - literally and metaphorically - and viscerally experience the limitless possibilities of the beyond. For me as an artist, the horizons of the landscape - whether it is the uneven horizon of hills and trees beyond my window in Bristol - or along the various coastlines of the South West - continue to provide a rich seam of ideas, inspiration and images for my work. Each painting is a journey, and often within each painting there is a journey also. During the last couple of years I have been working in a range of sizes - from 8 inch to 4 foot square canvases - and my work has become even more engaged with rich colour contrasts, the patterns of landscape and the importance of shape and edge. Every painting represents how I feel about a particular sense of place.

CONSTRUCTED A PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION WITH WORK BY PATRICK COUGHLAN AND CLAUDIO AHLERS

Constructed explores our relationship with the places, and spaces that we imagine, create, and exist within. This carefully curated collection of engaging photographic work reflects on, and responds to the often bold, sometimes stark, and almost always graphic language of the built environment which we inhabit and continually travel through. Both humorous and melancholic, and shot entirely on medium-format film, this inspiring body of work is a fascinating journey through our constructed world, and examines the man-made landscape as a manifestation of the human condition.

TAMAS SZIKSZAY AN EXHIBITION OF FIGURATIVE WORKS BY HUNGARIAN PAINTER TAMAS SZIKSZAY

Living abroad makes me think about the meaning of home. I have found that 'Home' is not just a place where I grew up, or where I went to school, home means more about my family and the relationship with them, this is my main inspiration. I strive to represent my own world and personal background, and my hobby of long distance running. Running for hours keeps my body completely relaxed and this provides me with new creativity. Despite the fact that I am physically exhausted after a run, the long hours clear my mind and lead me to think about new ideas. In the last couple of years I have focussed more on producing on portraits and self-portraits. The people in my paintings are usually alone, and I represent them in a very simplified way. Sometimes in surrealistic surroundings, turning their back to us, or closing their eyes. To me these poses reflect the struggles of everyday life, uncertain feelings about fear, doubt and loneliness. I paint them to help acquire an answer as to where my place is in this world as an artist. My work is based on photographs but I'm not aiming for exact reproduction.
