ON THE TRAIL OF THE LONESOME PINE SHOW & TELL AMANDA COZENS
ON THE TRAIL OF THE LONESOME PINE A RADIOTHERAPY PHOTO PROJECT BY ASHLEY GREEN SUPPORTED BY MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT
Ashley Green was first diagnosed in 1991, with a rare form of cancer in the roof of his mouth which was successfully treated. In early 2011 the cancer returned and he underwent extensive surgery, which resulted in temporary facial paralysis, followed by six weeks of radiotherapy at The Royal Marsden. This exhibition is Ashley's photographic diary, documenting the process of his recovery, and it is supported by Macmillan Cancer Support who helped him throughout with money for train fares, one-to-one psychological counselling, financial advice and form filling, and online support through their Cancer Patient Forums.
On 8 August 2011 I was told I had a tumour on the parotid gland in the right side of my face. It needed to be removed before it caused any damage to my throat, ear or brain, or could spread to anywhere else. If it was malignant I would need radiotherapy, and I would probably have permanent facial paralysis on that side. In October it was confirmed as a malignant, undifferentiated infiltrative tumour. It was probably caused by the first dose of radiotherapy I had for cancer in the roof of my mouth back in 1991 as there is a 1.5% chance every five years of getting a tumour from radiotherapy. Surgery at The Royal Marsden Chelsea was in late October and took eight hours. All signs of cancer were removed. I recovered well, put on some weight eating cream cakes and four weeks later began 30 sessions of 3D Conformal Radiotherapy at The Marsden in London on Thursday 8 December. I took photos on each day of my 30 days of RT. 30 on Day 1, 29 on Day 2, all the way down to 1 on Day 30. There are 465 photos of my daily life during that 7 week period, such as meals, travel, time at home with the family and time alone. I wanted to remember what I was told and what happened, what I saw and what I did. And how I felt. So that it might help somebody else. Away from home and all my usual responsibilities with only a 15 minute RT session each day, it would have been easy to fall into deep boredom and only just pop out in time for the next session, the next day. It would also have been easy to walk around with my head down all the time and not engage with the world around me or the people I encountered. But doing something creative helped me see things in a positive way and allowed me to produce something of value. It gave me a small amount of control in a situation that frequently felt a long way out of control.

AMANDA COZENS AN EXHIBITION OF ANTHROPOMORPHIC PAINTINGS BY AMANDA COZENS
I am passionate about story telling and love the idea that people find their own narrative in their responses to my work. I am struck by the fact that we are animals, just as the fox and the crow are, and have characteristics and drives we both share, yet there is this capacity within us not only to identify and empathise with other creatures, but to weave them into our own stories, give them voices and human hearts.
