We are back to our normal 3rd Thursday schedule with the Membership Luncheon on November 18th, and we will be welcoming Ross Perot Jr. as our guest speaker. Ross Perot Jr. serves as Chairman of The Perot Group, which manages the various Perot family interests that include real estate, oil and gas, and financial investments. Additionally, Mr. Perot is Chairman of Hillwood, a Texas-based, leading global real estate development company he founded in 1988. That same year, Mr. Perot developed Fort Worth Alliance Airport, the country’s first industrial airport, through a unique public-private partnership. The airport now anchors AllianceTexas, a 27,000-acre master-planned, mixed-use community in North Texas. The area is home to the AllianceTexas Mobility Innovation Zone, an integrated testbed for both surface and air mobility technology to test, scale, and commercialize. Since inception, AllianceTexas has generated nearly $84 billion in regional economic impact. Mr. Perot is co-founder of Perot Systems Corporation and served in various roles within the company including CEO, Chairman of the Board and member of its Board of Directors. Perot Systems was acquired by Dell Inc. in 2009 at which time, Mr. Perot joined their Board of Directors where he served until 2013. As an aviation enthusiast, Perot completed the first helicopter flight around the world in less than 30 days in 1982 and served as a pilot in the Unites States Air Force. Mr. Perot then became chairman of the Air Force Memorial Foundation, leading the 14-year effort to build the United States Air Force Memorial in Washington, DC. Mr. Perot currently serves on the board of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and was also selected as a member of President Trump’s Economic Revival Task Force. He currently sits on the board of the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) and is Board Member Emeritus for both Vanderbilt University and the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. Visit Grapevinechamber.org and click on events to register online. Make your reservations by 5:00pm on Tuesday, November 16th to receive the $25.00 early bird registration rate ($40.00 after that time). @GrapevineChamber

GRAPEVINE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE EXECUTIVE BOARD
I will totally admit to “borrowing” this article from my fellow Chamber CEO, Mike Mallone, of the Texarkana Regional Chamber of Commerce. Recently I was at an event where someone was asked twice for a business card, and they provided an “old” card the first time and didn’t have any others for the second request, and that was just while I was standing with them. While modern technology is here to stay, I also believe that the tried and true handshake and business cards should also be a part of your marketing equation, and always readily available. Mike’s article below shares the same conclusion…. “He who has a thing to sell And goes and whispers in a well Is not as apt to get the dollars As he who climbs a tree and hollers.” -Diana Ratliff This old marketing adage speaks volumes to individuals or businesses wishing to sell themselves and products to the rest of the world. The infamous and often underused/overused/misused/or simply not used – the business card. This 90x50 mm piece of paper or card stock has opened and shut many doors throughout history and in the world of business. It has evolved and grown over the centuries but still maintains its usefulness in today’s world. Karen Klein, writing in the Los Angeles Times, comments on the continual importance of the business card. She reiterates the position that the card is a ‘picture’ of you. As a reference point, in Japanese, the word for a business card is “make” when translated literally means ‘my face’. It represents you. Why Is a Business Card Important? 1.It announces who you are. 2.It introduces you to someone. 3.It can solicit a person’s business. 4.It markets your business. 5.It provides essential contact information after you walk away. All are important but it narrows down to: It is a picture of you. Your card reminds the person of who you are, why you communicated, how can contact you, and the type of person you are. It is the first impression. Your cards must be clean, attractive, and printed on quality stock. Your card must look professional if you are to look professional. You need to identify the necessary ingredients for your card. In all cases, you need to decide what is needed on it to keep you from losing business. In all cases, keep the cards up to date. A card with hand ‘scratched’ items only indicates disrespect for the recipient and an impression of your disorganization. Don’t hand out torn or worn business cards. Don’t place a card in a bag, pocket, or wallet when you receive it. Always treat cards with respect when receiving them. After all, it represents the person. Never forget your cards. Doing so is a social faux pas. Don’t include cards with personal or emotional correspondence. Give your card to everyone. It is a marketing piece and can be used well. Give it to family, friends, clients – new or old, post it on bulletin boards, and distribute it at meetings. No matter where you are in the world, the business card is a great form of marketing and if done incorrectly, it can be a dealbreaker. Etiquette is important to a card’s use. This etiquette is affected by the culture in which the participants are from or the location of the transaction. Don’t just share yours, ask for theirs first. Remember, your business card is a giant billboard in the palm of your hand.
