Growing Your Business By Growing Your Network Grapevine C h a m b e r Investors Welcome to the 2nd Quarter of 2013. Time really does fly. In the March Newsletter, I talked about the Program of Work that your Chamber Board uses to guide the organization. I thought this month that I would discuss one of the strongest advantages of being a Chamber member. If you know our company, Blagg Tire & Service, very well and are really involved in the Chamber, you know that one of the best values we see in the Chamber is networking.
Networking is a bad word for some primarily because people are uncomfortable with doing it, much less being consistent in doing it as part of their marketing plan. I want to encourage you that networking provides some of the most effective and long lasting benefits for your company. If you’re like me, you make purchases from people based on relationships you have developed over time. In addition, you may also ask people you know and trust to recommend others for the different services you need to purchase. At Blagg Tire & Service, we have three dedicated marketing folks that their primary job is

networking and civic work. They love to help market others while gaining benefits for our company through developing great relationships. I know I order more business cards for these than anybody else in our organization because they meet so many people. The Grapevine Chamber has many different areas where you can network your business. The monthly Chamber luncheon is attended by 150-200 individuals that have the need for products and services that you sell. In addition, the Chamber offers Business After Hours Mixers, ribbon cuttings, involvement in Continued on page 2

Gary Blagg is the Ambassador of the Month. Gary and his wife Wanda, who just recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, are both 4th generation residents of Grapevine and Grapevine High School alumni. Since 1986, they have had Blagg Tire and Service at 604 S. Main Street. Blagg Tire & Service does many types of auto service, oil changes, state inspections, and of course it’s a great place to go for tires. Congratulations Gary!

Leadership Breakfast™Series: Bette Price - GenBlending :
Leveraging the Talent of a New Generation The Grapevine Chamber of Commerce 2013 Leadership Breakfast Series sponsored by Lead It 2 Win It® continues April 19, 8:30-9:30 a.m., at Cowboys Golf Club with Bette Price speaking on GenBlending™: Leveraging the Talent of a New Generation. This series is open to all Chamber members and designed for individual employees, managers or business owners who are interested in improving or developing their leadership skills overall. Are you leveraging the talents of this new generation called Gen Y? GenBlending™ provides valuable insights, based on extensive research, to help business leaders more realistically understand, respond to, engage and develop this new generation of talent in order to ensure future growth and profitability. With today’s aging demographics there is a great need to integrate into the workplace a whole new generation of talent - the Millennials - more often referred to as Gen Y. Unfortunately, there are many misconceptions about this generation; about their motivation and their capabilities. This presentation will bring to life some fact-based realities based on multi-faceted research. It will help you to better understand, respond to, engage and develop this new generation of talent. As a result, you will be able to more effectively embrace the potential of this bright, talented and energetic young generation and leverage their talent to ensure your future growth and profitability. Make plans to join us! Register online at the Chamber’s Events’ Page or contact the Chamber at (817) 481-1522. Cost is $15 per session.

Grapevine Chamber of Commerce Women’s Division Great Taste of Grapevine is the current focus of the Women’s Division. This event is one of our two main fundraising efforts each year. The proceeds fund our School Supplies and Christmas Spirit programs, and in turn benefit our community. Last year we provided School Supply Packs to almost 1000 GCISD students in need. We purchase the prepackaged grade-level kits and they are distributed in conjunction with the CONNECT Back to School Fair. It is so rewarding to see the joy on a child’s face when they receive their school supplies and to know that we are helping in a small way to educate a child for a better life. We have been advised that the need identified this year is closer to 2000 children, so we have a huge need to fill. Our ability to do this is based upon the funds raised from Great Taste of Grapevine and the Ho Ho HoeDown Holiday event. The Christmas Spirit project is a program in which we and our community respond to senior and disabled citizen’s Christmas “wishes”. We interview approximately 100 seniors and put together an Angel Tree, which is available to all citizens and generally located at the Chamber office and the Community Activity Center. The community comes together to provide the gifts on their wish lists and then we deliver the items in December. The Women’s Division also contributes household commodities, gift cards and other small gifts such as stamps and holiday decorations. Those who receive these items are very appreciative and in some cases, it is the only “Christmas” they have. Christmas Spirit delivery is a very humbling and rewarding experience. Member of the Women’s Division believe that our efforts in providing for our citizens-in-need helps to improve and sustain the health of our community, making it a desirable place to live, an attractive place to shop and a valuable place for your business. In order to support our efforts, we urge all Chamber members as well as the entire community to come out to Great Taste of Grapevine on Thursday, April 11th. Bring your appetite and your hunger for learning about cooking as we have exciting new opportunities and a new location. The event will be held at the Embassy Suites Outdoor World from 5:30 – 8:30. New this year are Great Chefs in Action presentations and a Grand Raffle. Come out for food, fun and a great time. Tickets are available on our website and from any Women’s Division member. Our next monthly luncheon will be held on Tuesday, April 16th. Our program will be Jason Keller from the Grapevine Police Department speaking on “Safety.” Our luncheon sponsors are Karen Deakin and Lisa Pardo, GCISD Board Trustees. We meet at Stacy Furniture’s 3rd floor Community Room, 1900 South Main Street, Grapevine at 11:45.
