PERSONAL SAFETY Is there an App for that?

The Grapevine Chamber of Commerce is proud to have Jeff McKissack, President of Defense by Design, speak on the topic, “Personal Safety: Is there an App for that?” The luncheon, sponsored by Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center and catered by Chill Sports Bar & Grill, will be Thursday, June 11, at 11:30 a.m. There is certainly a place for technology in our world, especially as it relates to personal safety. But is it really smart “phones” or smart people

that are needed? How do you better sharpen your instincts and discernment when faced not with a gun or knife - but a good story? How do you “update” your own personal safety through enhanced awareness? Jeff will offer four distinct strategies to make you more aware of your surroundings and the people we encounter on a daily basis. Jeff has spoken to many groups, clubs, organizations and Chambers in the Dallas/ Fort Worth area, and you may have seen him on local news. Jeff consults and trains with

those in the corporate world and regularly offers continuing education courses to those in the educational, medical, legal, financial, human resource, risk management, real estate and insurance professions. He is also a contributing writer to several state and national trade publications. His goal is to teach you how to spot trouble before trouble spots you. Make plans to attend the luncheon at the Grapevine Convention Center, located at 1209 S. Main St. (at the corner of Vine St. & Municipal Way). The Continued on page 3

Thanks for Making Main Street Fest a Success! Thanks to all of you that made the 31st Annual Main Street Fest a success! We greatly appreciate those who were able to volunteer in the Grapevine Chamber Concession Trailer and Beer booth during the festival. I may be biased, but I think the Chamber

has the best group of volunteers in the city. A special thanks to Dr. William Cummins with Wellness First Chiropractic & Family Wellness for taking on the responsibility of overseeing the Chamber Beer booth for the weekend. I know they are not volunteers, but we can’t forget all the hard work that the Chamber staff does before,

during and after the festival to make it a great event for the Chamber. I hope you all had a chance to try the funnel fries, which were a new menu item this year. I think they were huge hit, and I look forward to possibly expanding our menu for GrapeFest, September 17-20! Speaking of GrapeFest, one Continued on page 2

Thanks for Making Main Street Fest a Success! Continued from page 1 of the many items that your Chamber Board of Directors is currently working on is updating the Chamber’s Concession Trailer. There are several things that need to be done both cosmetically, as well as functionally, and we hope to have several of those items complete by GrapeFest. Our upcoming Chamber Luncheon is June 11, at the Grapevine Convention Center. Please plan to attend the luncheon to network with other businesses and learn more about the opportunities that the Chamber has to offer. Also, don’t forget the Must be Present to Win Drawing at the end of the

luncheon sponsored by First Financial Bank, N.A. The pot has grown to $2,200, and I would hate for you to not be present to win. I think this is going to be the month that somebody wins the cash! If I or any of your Board of Directors can ever be of assistance to you, please let us know. Hope to see you at the next Chamber event. Paul Slechta Chairman of the Board Owner, Panda Embroidery

A Great Summer for the Women’s Division It’s looking like a great summer! Lake Grapevine is full beyond capacity, summer events are beginning and the Women’s Division members will be relaxing somewhat until our big volunteer effort Saturday August 8. We will be partnering with CONNECT, GRACE and GCISD’s Back to School event. Because of the hard work of our members and community coming to the Holiday Hoedown and Great Taste of Grapevine, the Women’s Division will be purchasing $30,000 of school supplies for deserving GCISD students. Thank you to all of the Women’s Division members that worked the Beer Booths for Main Street Fest, Friday, May 15. Emily McRoberts of Homestead Grapevine Winery Tasting Room got all the ladies working, and even with the rain, business was brisk most of the day. Thanks Emily for your effort! At the Women’s Division May luncheon, we enjoyed our annual GRACE fashion show, with employees from GRACE showing off great outfits to purchase at the Style and Grace Store. They always look so great in their classy outfits, which can be purchased. The June luncheon will be a Member Round Table- “Post-it Note Challenge” to determine goals for the Women’s Division 50th anniversary and beyond. I look forward to seeing Post-it Notes flying with excitement at our goal brainstorming luncheon. Great work women of the Women’s Division of the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce - working hard and calmly serving the Grapevine community. See you all at our next luncheon Tuesday, June 16. If you have questions or want more information to get involved, contact me at coplen2@gmail.com or (817) 300-8351.

Nancy Coplen 2015 Chair of the Women’s Division of the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce

Here’s A Tidbit from our past as we celebrate our 50th Anniversary: In 1974, the Women’s Division sponsored and published a Reference Directory that listed city officials, businesses, churches and organizations. TP&L, the electric company gave it out to all new residents and each business in town also received one. This was the forerunner of today’s Chamber Directory. After expenses were paid, they used the remaining funds to purchase an IBM typewriter and a desk for the Chamber of Commerce office.
