A Challenge from Your CEO I have a few challenges for you. No, it’s not weight loss or picking the games that the Texas Rangers might have a chance of winning for the remainder of the season. It’s really pretty simple… The First Challenge is that the next time you need a product or service for your home or business, look either at the online or printed Chamber directory for
a company who is listed along with you as a member investor of the Grapevine Chamber. Just like you, these companies are giving back to the community where they do business, providing their time, money and often times their talents to work with you on committees, at local festivals, and in many other ways to make Grapevine even greater. We all get into habits of “googling” (or whatever search engine you use) to find what you need, or you go back to perhaps a business

you used in the past. However, by taking an extra step to look at your fellow Chamber members, you are supporting someone who in the future may support you. The Second Challenge, when you do look for that business in the Chamber to help you, if you don’t find a business listed that provides what you need, consider asking the company you ultimately use to join the Grapevine Chamber, to make your next search, and perhaps Continued on page 2

A Challenge from Your CEO Continued from page 1 someone else’s, easier! By growing our business base, we continue to strengthen the combined business power and reach of the Grapevine business community. And the Final Challenge to each of you is to look through the list of suppliers and businesses that are “in your rolodex” or contact list, and invite them to become a part of the Grapevine Chamber and help you create a stronger business community. Invite them to a Membership Luncheon, Business After Hours Mixer, Golf Classic, Casino Night, Women’s Division Luncheon or the Economic Development Partnership Meeting to see the amazing business people they can create relationships and do business with. Or just send them the application and share with them that it will be the least expensive form of advertisement that they can find, being listed 24/7 on the Chamber’s website, printed in directories that are sent to Chamber members, as well as in relocation packets all year long. With the membership investment of only $265 - $840, they never even have to attend a meeting or event, and additionally they can post jobs, events, and Hot Deals from their computer to add additional value with no additional cost. Also, as our next Texas
legislative season will soon begin, our combined voice on business issues will most definitely be needed to protect and build our business climate! While visiting with someone recently, he was thanking me for his membership. It came from the array of people he had met from the President of GameStop at an Economic Development meeting to the President of Baylor Regional Medical Center at Grapevine (recently recognized as one of the top 25 hospitals in Texas by the way!) at a luncheon. That made me smile, because he didn’t realize that people feel the same way about meeting him. It is such a privilege to be working with each of you for Grapevine. You are what make Grapevine and the Grapevine Chamber so special; working together, developing relationship and especially friendships. Providing help and answers when needed, lending a hand to make things happen and sharing your knowledge in business makes you a leader in our community every day, and I challenge you to help us continue to grow!

Speakers & Panel Members:
The Chamber’s Business Insight Series continues August 22, with guest speakers from Microsoft Corporation and a guest panel featuring Bearings North, A Prompt Computer Service, ThumbTechs and Data Glove Inc. on the topic of Cloud Computing for Small to Medium Businesses. The Business Insight Series is designed for individual employees, managers or business owners who are interested in improving or developing their business skills. If your business is in insurance, banking, car sales, real estate, manufacturing, retail or any small, medium business to include a non-profit organization, then please read on. The cloud services industry grew to $45 billion worldwide last year and helping to drive that was more than 6 million Small to Medium Businesses (SMB) purchasing their first cloud service. According to research firm, Parallels, the SMB cloud market in the U.S. is now $18.9 billion with a forecast to grow 19% through 2015. “The Cloud” is a fictitious term used to define the sometimes mythical place where personal or enterprise data is stored. We all probably encounter the cloud daily from our phones, Google drive, Skydrive, iCloud and many more. During this session our subject matter experts will share the ins and outs of cloud computing and how it can lower your IT worries and budgets. This is not a technical session. This is a solution session on how technology can advance your business.

It’s a Busy Summer in the Women’s Division! August is definitely heating up at the Women’s Division! Some of the highlights this month are the Back to School Fair at Grapevine High School, Saturday, August 9, from 9 a.m. - 1p.m., where we will be a part of something so great for our school district! We align with the CONNECT group to distribute school supply packs for area students that otherwise would not have their supplies for the 1st day of school. You can call me a nerd, but I loved loved loved getting all of my school supplies together and carefully writing my name on each item (especially the pencil box!). That is part of the reason that I think this program is so special to me! We are helping make sure that more than 1,000 students go to school with the right tools in hand every year since the 1980s! A quote from the CONNECT website pretty much sums up the heart of this program that Women’s Division has been carrying the torch on for many years: “Whether in kindergarten or 12th grade, when a student shows up to school without the basic necessities, they often feel lost, stigmatized and like they don’t belong. This often leads to poor performance and eventually puts them at risk for dropping out. A lack of basic school supplies can create ‘clouds of inferiority in their mental skies,’ to borrow a phrase from Martin Luther King Jr.”
Other Things Going On In The Women’s Division This Month:
• Tuesday, August 5, 5 p.m., Holiday Hoedown Committee Meeting at the Chamber office. Come help us plan one of the most fun events of the year! Contact Shelley Ruddick at sruddick@bnkwest.com or Janice Kane at Janice.kane@gcisd.net or BJ Wilson at bjwilson13@verizon.net. • Saturday, August 9, 9 a.m., Back to School Fair at Grapevine High School. We need volunteers; so contact Karen Deakin at karendeakin@sbcglobal.net if you would like to join us! • Tuesday, August 19, 11:45 a.m., Monthly Luncheon on the 3rd floor of Stacy Furniture. Email Nancy Coplen if you would like to RSVP at Coplen2@gmail.com.

Friday, November 14, at 6 p.m. at Austin Ranch at the DFW Hilton Lakes is the hottest event of the year… the HOLIDAY HOEDOWN!!!!!! Always remember to Love Hard and Serve More! Casey Hege 2014 Chair of the Women’s Division of the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce
