Director of Tarrant SBDC slated to speak at the Membership Luncheon on April 15th The Grapevine Chamber of Commerce is excited to welcome Rodney Johnson, Director of the Tarrant Small Business Development Corporation, to the next Membership Luncheon on April 15, at the Grapevine Convention Center, sponsored by Prosperity Bank and catered by Feedstore BBQ. What can YOUR Chamber do for YOU? Our 2021 Chair, Phil Cunningham, asked me to write an article this month as your CEO. We can either assume he wants me to share any wisdom I might have, but more than likely it’s so that he doesn’t have to write an article this month! Either way, I am happy to do it (really, I am!) Recently we did a quick two question survey and more members responded to it than any others we have done. While the first question was about the need for a job fair (because staff wanted to know if you needed us to schedule one to help you find your workforce), the second question was a sincere ask of “what can we do for you”. The responses were varied, and we read them and shared them with the entire board of directors during our planning retreat. There were some very thoughtful comments and ideas presented, and for some of them we will be working through how to make them happen if possible. There were also a couple of comments shared that made me realize that we are not always doing a great job of explaining much of what we do! So, I thought I would share a couple of those comments from the survey and let you know how your chamber is already working for you: "I’d love to attend an event with local city and business leaders about what’s happening in town. Everything from what are they building on that corner to new changes at existing businesses." Continued on page 3 @GrapevineChamber

Welcome your NEW Director of Events, John Adkins John joins the team after spending the past 14 years working for Grapevine Mills in the marketing, guest services, and tourism department. It is hard to lose him in a crowd due to the fact he is 6’6” and he has never met a stranger. During his time with Grapevine Mills he recognized as a leader amongst his peers and was honored to open malls around the country and train their teams. John lived in 6 states before he turned 18. He moved to Texas in 2004 after graduating high school, in Cincinnati, OH. While attending Tarrant County College, John studied broadcasting and marketing. He was hired directly out of high school as one of four broadcast interns for the Dallas Mavericks for the 2004-2005 season. John and his wife, Amanda, met in Grapevine and have been together since 2005. They currently reside in Roanoke but come down to Grapevine as often as they can. They have two children, their daughter, Harper (5) and son James (3), and a Maltese/ Shih Tzu mix named Mae. In his spare time John enjoys: grilling, playing golf around the DFW metroplex, watching his hometown teams from Boston, traveling with his wife around the US, and going to support the local teams with his friends. Come say hello to John the next time you're at a Chamber event!

continued from page 1: On the 4th Wednesday of each month, your Chamber holds its Chamber / City Partnership Economic Development meeting. Typically held at the Blankenship Business Center at the chamber from 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m., speakers for this monthly meeting include city staff from the Economic Development Department, Business Development with Planning & Zoning, the Transportation Department, and a guest speaker. This meeting is all about what is happening in and around Grapevine. At each meeting, we get to hear about what is being built, what is being planned, and what is happening with local businesses. Any chamber member is invited to attend this informative meeting to learn more about Grapevine and our new businesses. Just last month, we got to meet the new owner of Daylight Golf, Jeff Dill. He owns a new business in the old Love and War building near the mall that took a tired building and has created a new venue & restaurant. It is always a meeting with a diverse group who attend, and we learn something new each month. I would encourage you to put it on your calendar and attend. "Is there any way to get an SBA Executive to come speak to the Chamber on the upcoming benefits signed into law. PPP2, EIDL, Etc." Our January Luncheon speaker was Mike Pine, CPA talking about the benefits of the PPP2. Our April Luncheon speaker will be Rodney Johnson, Director of the Tarrant Small Business Development Center (SBDC). Both speakers have information to share with our businesses on ways to take advantage of what is being offered, and ways to keep our businesses moving forward. "Would love for the Chamber to offer a space where members can hold meetings such as lunch & learns or other meeting types for their clients." In January, 2020, just before the pandemic, the Chamber opened the Gary & Cynthia Blankenship Business Center on the Chamber property. This was a project that took several years to determine the feasibility to do the fund raising and to build. While the pandemic slowed the fund raising down, the building still opened and has been in use for the last year. Several business members have used it to hold meetings and trainings (with the ability to spread out and have social distancing). While there is a cost for our chamber member businesses to use it, it is very minimal and helps us pay for the cleaning, upkeep and utilities. Non-members can use it, but the cost is greater. If you have not been to a meeting in what we lovingly refer to the BBC, I invite you to come by the Chamber and check it out. If you ever have any questions about events, your membership benefits, or your account, please do not hesitate to contact us. Your Grapevine Chamber is your organization of businesses here to work together to help each other and we are ready to “Keep Moving Forward”!

It’s so nice to see things greening up, warmer weather and patios open for business! It’s also very exciting to hear about the upcoming Main Street Days Festival in the planning stages and working to help the merchants and restaurants on Main Street open back up fully. The Women’s Division is looking forward to playing a part and volunteering again this year; this will be our first event since 2019, and one we very much enjoy being involved in! We are working toward getting our two main fundraising events on the calendar and ready for the community. Mark your calendars for The Great Taste of Grapevine on Thursday, October 14th. It will again be held at the Hilton DFW Lakes, and we can’t wait to welcome everyone! We will publish more details as the planning moves forward and we get closer to the date. We do not currently have information on the Elves on the Run 5K and Fun Run, but we will get details out on that as soon as we can. If you or your business would like to get involved with either of these events as a sponsor, please contact me at sssmith33@me.com or Janice Kane at msjkane1@gmail.com . The Women’s Division is a philanthropic organization working to help students and seniors in our area. Our next luncheon will be at the new Vineyard Ballroom of the Courtyard DFW Airport North, on Tuesday, April 13th, at 11:45 a.m.. Visitors are always welcome, and signup for the luncheon is on the Chamber website. I hope we see some new faces there! Sharon Smith 2021 Women's Division Chair

Leadership Grapevine Delivers 300 Care Packages to Grapevine Police & Fire Only two class meetings remain prior to graduation for the 2020-2021 Leadership Grapevine Class. Beginning in August 2020, this year's class has been safely meeting in person for their monthly meetings, learning about everything from city operations to marketing practices and police and fire equipment tours to an overview of GRACE. During March's session for Health & Human Services Day, the class completed their project, gathering, stuffing and delivering 300 care packages to the Grapevine Public Safety Building for officers and firefighters. Packages included fresh baked cookies, notepads, pens, and water bottles, just to name a few. Currently in it's 29th year, Leadership Grapevine is a program of the City of Grapevine and the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce and offers an educational experience designed to develop an awareness of the city, its relationship with the DFW Metroplex and to provide personal leadership training. At the conclusion of the program, participants are better prepared to seek leadership roles, both within their business and community. The Leadership Grapevine Program begins with orientation in August and concludes with Graduation in May, with one all day meeting each month from September-April. Applications for the 30th class session will open in June. For more information or to add your name to the early registration list, contact the Chamber at 817-481-1522.

Blankenship Business Center begins flood repairs

10 I APRIL 2021 WWW.GRAPEVINECHAMBER.ORG

Your Chamber was not exempt from damages during February's historic freeze. Unfortunately, the Blankenship Business Center suffered from broken pipes (shoutout to the City employees who noticed the water coming out of the doors), flooding the entire building. We have removed ceilings, walls, carpet, furniture, cut walls approximately 2 feet up to remove damaged drywall, and spent a few days drying everything that remained. We are currently working with our insurance company to get repairs scheduled and completed so we can get back to business! The Blankenship Business Center opened in January 2021, shortly before the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. Several member business partners, along with your chamber committees, were able to utilize the space in 2020 and early 2021 for in person, socially distanced events. The BBC offers seating for up to 100 guests, AV, equipped catering kitchen, restaurant capacity ice machine and complimentary WiFi. As always, we will keep the membership updated on the status of the completion of repairs.
