Continuing toward the goals of our 2023 Chairman Emeritus

Each year we all face challenges that make us review our current path and consider our direction for the future Some we can plan for, and others are just out of our control We can get excited for the opportunities or get frustrated for the interruptions in our lives It is all about choices we make in our business or personal lives.

2023 started off with a major challenge for your Grapevine Chamber in the form of the heart attack and illness of our Chairman of the Board, Kosse Maykus It happened right at the end of 2022 and the Executive Boards (2022 & 2023) came together to create a plan to continue to move forward 2021 Chair, Phil Cunningham, agreed to step back into the Chair’s role to fulfill the immediate need. He stepped into the January awards banquet and helped out in a

variety of ways, always with that Phil smile.

But then of course, life always has a way of changing the course you are on, just when you think that you have it all figured out At the March Board meeting, Phil informed the Chamber Board that he has accepted a consulting position with a hotel group in upstate New York that would take him there from April to November of 2023. While he was happy to fill in for the chamber, this was a “ once in a lifetime” opportunity for him to meet a personal and professional goal that he had

So, at that Board meeting, with the recommendation of the Chamber CEO and approval of both Trudy Cresswell as the Immediate Past Chair and Kelly Schwartz as the Incoming Chair, the Chamber’s Board decided to not name another interim and to work as a team to fulfill the role of the Chair until such time that Kosse Maykus could be back at the head of the board table.

Shirley Roberts is a Registered Nurse and Certified Case Manager with over 35 years experience in health care and management

Shirley is the Clinic Nurse Manager at GRACE & her role consists of day-to-day operations, patient education & management of the Clinic. She teaches educational classes and provides clinical oversight to an active patient population and works very closely with all volunteer providers, nurses, etc. to improve patient health.

Shirley graduated from Leadership Grapevine with the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce in 2016 and has been an active Ambassador with the Grapevine Chamber ever since completing the program. She served as the Chair of the Grapevine Ambassadors 2018-2019. She received the Fort Worth Business Press Health Heroes Award in 2019, was the Grapevine Chamber Ambassador of the Year for 2018, President’s Award by the GRACE Board of Directors in 2018, & she was selected and honored as one of the DFW Great 100 Nurses for 2021 She loves serving and working in her Grapevine community

And wouldn’t you know, at that very meeting on Tuesday, March 28th, after just getting out of the hospital for 104 days on that Saturday, Kosse Maykus walked into the Board room with a smile that was a mile wide! He sat in on the remainder of the Board meeting and shared that he was looking forward to re-engaging in the Chamber Board in the future. He thanked Phil for filling in for him and for the thoughts and prayers from the Board and entire Chamber membership. He was just happy to be home and shared his appreciation for the Grapevine EMTs, the Baylor Scott and White Hospital System and everyone who was a part of his recovery

Unfortunately, we never know what tomorrow holds Recently we lost Kosse after another illness. As a board, we now look back and feel so blessed that he was able to be with us in March, and so very sad that he had passed away by April. As a Chamber team through the Board and staff, we do know that we can accept what is set before us, and now our Chair-Elect Kelly Schwartz with Meow Wolf has stepped up into the role of Chair Kelly has the goal of continuing to work the plan that Kosse set out for us in December, and to maintain the objectives he had been so excited to create. We will also be honoring Kosse Maykus by continuing to include and honor him as our 2023 Chairman Emeritus. It is with all of us working together and praying for the Maykus family that we can accept the challenges we face and continue to build a stronger business and family community through the Grapevine Chamber

The Grapevine Young Professionals (GYP) are off to booming start in 2023, with our April luncheon hitting a record-high sixty attendees! GYP meets twice a month; one luncheon at the Blankenship Business Center and one happy hour at various local watering holes. Our luncheons are curated by a fantastic team of 4 individuals tasked with finding engaging speakers, delicious eats from a Grapevine Chamber member restaurant, and interactive networking opportunities. Our happy hours are fun, light, and busy! You’ll meet young professionals from all walks of life and from all corners of the metroplex looking to connect with others in the beautiful City of Grapevine Our Community Team looks for opportunities to serve our community through our “Cause of the Quarter” initiative, in which GYP donates funds and needed items each quarter to a local non-profit We focus all of our fundraising in that quarter to a deserving non-profit With the help of our Community Team, GYP recently adopted 55 acres surrounding Oak Grove Park through the “Keep Grapevine Beautiful” organization We were excited to conduct our first clean-up day in late April In May, GYP will be at Main Street Fest, deep-frying festival favorites at the Chamber concession trailer.

June brings around a summertime classic, the “Feed our Kids” event, organized by GRACE. We will be volunteering two days in mid-June, handing out great food and drinks from our community partners, Sauce’d and HTeaO October will bring our inagural Spooky Soiree, held on the most appropriate day of the day, Friday the 13th! Spooky Soiree is the brain-child of our top-notch GYP Chair-Elect Garin Giacomarro in which GYP will host a murder mystery dinner and fundraiser The funds raised from this event will be distributed to our 2023 GYP Causes of the Quarter – GRACE, The Usual Artspects, Grapevine Animal Services, and Grapevine-Colleyville Education Foundation.

2023 is turning out to be a revolutionary year for GYP Our Board is comprised of a wide range of members: non-profits, solopreneurs, business owners, corporate employees, and governmental employees. Our diversity in our day jobs, life experiences, and personalities create the GYP magic that keeps this train barreling down the tracks We’d be proud to have you join us for a luncheon, happy hour, or volunteering event Please email me: jpgrafa@origin.bank and I’ll happily get you plugged in.

Cheers to a great rest of the year!”
