I like November in Cyprus; it’s not too hot and it’s not too cold, usually still with plenty of sunshine and some of the most spectacular sunsets – often with a visible ‘green flash’ as the sun dips below the horizon over a clear blue sea. However I did notice a fine shower of rain coming in through a faulty seal on my bathroom ceiling the other day, which reminded me that now’s the time to sort out problems with your house after the long hot summer. Festive decorations going up and a noticeable change in the weather signal sure indications that Christmas is just round the corner. With Christmas in mind there are lots of ideas on how to get into the spirit of the season in this month’s issue. If you’re stuck for something to do in the coming weeks there are plenty of events including Christmas Fairs, shopping trips and dinner/dances. Look out for the Remembrance Day services too. Back next month,

Hidden Treasure! There has been a quiet renaissance taking place in the village of Salamiou and it is well worth discovering for a day out, a break enroute to the mountains or as the ideal place for a relaxing break. As well as being the perfect place to unwind and enjoy some good walks and great photography, Salamiou has much of interest, including a theme centre, open air theatre and good food and wine!
Salamiou nestles in glorious countryside on the ridge between two broad valleys, where in years gone by the mighty Dhiaizos and Xeros rivers flowed. It is a traditional Cypriot village, where time is measured by the passing seasons. It has a rich heritage that includes the attractive Monastery of Panayia Salamiotissa and the Holy Stone that stands nearby. The Lagria Theme Centre was inspired by its traditional listed building that was lovingly restored in 2006 and over the years has been a family home, a popular coffee shop and a village store. The building has walls made from local stone, thick wooden beams and rattan ceiling and large open fireplaces. Today, the Lagria Theme Centre tells the story of mountain honey with information about local almonds, olives, herbs, grapes and silk. For those wanting a relaxing break away, there are two beautiful village houses to rent that share a courtyard and have the added pleasure of a spa tub for hydrotherapy and message - perfect with a glass of wine or cup of mountain tea!
choice for special family celebrations and corporate functions too. Just a short distance from the village stands the Lagria Winery. Staff members firmly believe that making good wine is a skill but making
fine wine is an art! Over recent years, the wines made have developed in character and number and now comprise of a Dry White, Dry RosĂŠ, Dry Red and Cabernet Sauvignon. Since last year, a dessert Sun Wine (Finiki) has been added to this impressive selection. The winery is open for tasting sessions by prior arrangement. With Christmas in mind, the winery also has a variety of attractive gift packs.
The Lagria Taverna is open Tuesday to Friday, 9.00am-12.00noon for Gourmet Brunch and on Sundays for lunch 1.00pm-3.00pm, and in the afternoon for drinks and dessert between 3.30pm-5.30pm. Reservations are recommended. For further information and reservations, please telephone: 99404872 The Lagria Taverna offers visitors gourmet brunches throughout the week and a really delicious Sunday Lunch - either inside the charming restaurant or out on the terrace. The Man who Gave his Toys ‘Back to the Future’ Well to be strictly honest, this incredible collection of dyecast miniature vehicles could hardly be classed as simply toys. Retired French teacher Julian Kirkup has assembled hundreds of scale models of the motor industry over many years. We blokes all had some of them in our possession when we were young but for Julian, the fascination ran on for more years than most. Julian explained that like all avid collectors it is the details that count, be it stamps, coins, medals whatever. It took him years to find a particular colour variation, or good quality models from dead production lines. Months spent tracking down once-popular firms like Matchbox, Dinky, Meccano and Corgi, all long gone. He researched diligently and with great patience to source exactly which models he wanted. Scouring shops, antique fairs, talking to fellow enthusiasts and browsing the internet he managed to build up a stunning range of cars, buses, commercial vehicles, farm equipment, you name it he

found it, to complete his collection. Completeis the wrong word, when does any collector ever say that? Complement his collection in this case as space started to become a problem. Having been a teacher in the British Service schools in Cyprus, Julian
The Man who Gave his Toys ‘Back to the Future’ loved the island and on retirement, he settled down with his family in a mountain village. In later life, he moved to a smaller property at the Limassol coast that meant he had to decide what to do to preserve his collection of motors. Fortunately, there was already another collection of immaculate motors and memorabilia and it is in Limassol. Julian approached Dimis Mavropoulos, the founder of the first and only Cyprus Historic & Classic Motor Museum in the island of Cyprus, which is 100m off the motorway to My Mall. Dimis has a similar collection of motors but his are all life-size,
roadworthy and displayed in a huge hall where everyone can go to admire the classic style of some of the world’s most elegant and beloved motoring marques, as well as buses, fire engines and motoring memorabilia. Dimis generously offered the wall-space and he designed the cabinets to best show Julian’s beloved collection to the drivers of the future. Dimis himself is the most successful international rally driver to have raced for Cyprus. His skill at the wheel and entrepreneurial flair are legendary.
On July 2017 in front of TV cameras, friends and fellow motoring enthusiasts, Dimis unveiled Julian’s magnificent collection and presented him with a personal key to the Cyprus Motor Museum so he could pop in anytime to see his dream on display. This is not just another museum of dusty ancient artefacts but a fascinating collection that celebrates the history of motor transport. Which is your favourite? You may be able to drive it as some of the fleet can be hired out for special occasions. Visit www.cyprusmotormuseum.com.cy for further details.

Living, dying and beyond Twelve renowned experts in the fields of specialised medicine, hospice care and religion addressed a unique symposium in Paphos on the questions people are often afraid to ask about life and death and what might be waiting beyond. Organised by The Friends’ Hospice, the audience at the Almyra Hotel heard talks by leading figures in the fields of Intensive Care, Oncology, Psychiatry, Theology and Palliative Care. Dr Pansemni Aristodemou, Clinical Director of the hospice said, ”Many people on the island, both ex-pat and Cypriot, are unaware of the hospice care and medical treatment available for those suffering from illnesses for which there is no known cure. When they or their families face such problems, they are fearful and naturally have many questions but don’t know where to get the answers. This symposium was designed to put some of those fears to rest in terms of the compassionate care, medical relief and psychological support for the patients and for their families.” One of the speakers was Reverend Doctor Peter Speck, Visiting Fellow at the Faculty of Medicine, Southampton University. Dr Peck is also an honorary senior lecturer at the Cicely Saunders Institute of King’s College
London. Dame Cicely was known worldwide for her work in establishing the hospice movement. “Today we encourage team work in the care of patients,” he said. “We embrace all aspects of treatment, not just the necessary drugs for symptom and pain relief but also the psychiatric and spiritual needs of the sick and their family members. It is now a much more holistic approach in giving comfort to all of those affected.” Other experts who addressed the free symposium were: Dr Lakis Palazis, Head of Intensive Care Unit, Limassol General Hospital; Panierotatos Georgios, Metrolpolitan of Paphos; Maria Athanasiadou, Health Monitoring Unit, Ministry of Health; Dr George Astras, Oncologist, American Heart, Blue Cross Paphos; Dr George Samoutis, Associate Professor of Primary Care, St George’s Medical School, University of Nicosia; F. Marios Dernosthenous, Chaplain BOCOC and Makarion Hospital, Director of Pastoral Service Office, Archbishopry of Cyprus, Nicosia; Dr Panagiota Mama-Agapiou, Psychiatrist, Markarion Hospital, Nicosia; Dr Anestis Kesellopoulos, Professor Theology, University of Nicosia. The sessions were chaired by Dr Theodo Kyprianou, Head of ICU, Nicosia General

Chris Jones, President of The Friends’ Hospice Foundation, said; “It is extremely rare to have such a spectrum of talent and expertise under one roof. All of them lent their time and knowledge to widen the public understanding of the medical and other support mechanisms available to those in need and to their next of kin.” Since it began in 2006, The Friends’ Hospice has given palliative care completely free of charge to 1,430 people of all nationalities who have been suffering from illnesses for which a cure is no longer possible. 5Th Worldwide Aquathon - What Is It? It is an Aqua Fitness Marathon around the world, which was started in 2012 by Rose Hartzenburg in South Africa. In total, 188 vibrant, excited aqua instructors from 77 countries will unite through aqua fitness to present a 5th Worldwide Aquathon Day in their communities to spread the joy that aqua fitness gives. Most people are unaware that Aqua is an amazing exercise platform, suitable for all ages and fitness levels. I have witnessed how aqua fitness has helped many people in the community to have a healthier lifestyle, both physically and mentally. [bold heading]Where will it take place? The challenge is to host a 3 hour Aqua Marathon on Friday 10th November 2017 at The Crown Horizon Hotel indoor swimming pool, Coral Bay. Instruction will be given by myself and I will be leading 16 aqua ladies in a 3 hour continuous aqua programme. The money raised during this event will be split between two charities: the Premature Baby Unit at Makarios Hospital in Nicosia and the Archangel Michael Hospice in Paphos.
You are probably wondering why 3 hours? To help existing clients to judge their strength and stamina thanks to aqua fitness and to give enough time for many new clients to jump in and try it for the first time. Aquathon founder, Rose Hartzenburg, wanted to find a way to help many more people enjoy the aqua experience and raise money for charity, so this is how the dream of a Worldwide Aquathon Day was born! Seventy-seven countries are now behind this initiative to promote aqua fitness. I would like to thank all the ladies taking part, also a big thank you to everyone who has sponsored us. The total amount raised will be announced in the next issue. If you want further information, please contact Sue McCafferty on 99334798.

‘Lest We Forget’ By Valerie Morgan
We are called to remember many things, including our service men and women. Remembrance Sunday is a time set apart to remember, celebrate, and give thanks for those who have given so much for our country. Sadly, many churches today do not honour our war veterans on Remembrance Day, perhaps because they feel that to do so would be celebrating and honouring war itself. Let me set the record straight on that. No! It is not the same thing by any leap of the imagination. War is from Satan. It is meant for no other reason than to satisfy the power crazed lust of some ungodly men who are in charge of a nation. There is no good to be found in war. But as much as we hate war, we are forever grateful for our young men and women who are willing to go to bad places, be totally apart from their loved ones, and to fight and even die for those left at home. That is why we honour our service men and women on Remembrance Day: To say ‘thank you’ for keeping us free. Our servicemen must leave home and go to terrible places, to be surrounded by terrible people, yet they are willing to do so. They spend their time remembering their loved ones. They suffer loneliness and homesickness. They know they may be called upon to give the ultimate sacrifice – their very lives, for the sake of others. What kind of people are willing to do this?
New Beginnings Ladies Luncheon Club ‘Keep The Lumps Out Of Your Cups’ was the theme at Peggys Garden Café And Deli when they hosted the New Beginnings ladies luncheon club on the 25th October. Celebrating World wide Breast Cancer Awareness month, a fund-raising Pink Lunch of Salmon Quiche, Eton Mess, accompanied by a glass of sparkling pink fizz was enjoyed by all. The dress code? Pink of course. The ladies were asked to wear decorative bras over something pink! And so they did! Nothing was left to the imagination. Even The PlatexWonderbra would have been left open-mouthed! Mr. Colin Lewington, Chairman of the Paphos Cancer Patients Support Group, turned ‘pink’ when he was asked to Judge the most decorative bra. The ladies modeled their creations suggestively as they filed past him. He needed a chair!
In John 15:13, Jesus called them ‘friends’ when he said, ‘There is no greater love than laying down one’s life for a friend.’ I believe that verse describes a serviceman very well. He or she may not like the idea of doing so, and certainly does not look forward to it, but is willing to lay down his own life to save another if the situation demands they do so. So as we honour our servicemen and women on 12th November, we should give them what they need and deserve: our remembrance and thanks for what they have done; our respect and Godly encouragement. Let’s take our lead from the Apostle Paul when he said in Romans 1:8-10 ‘I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world. God, whom I serve with my whole heart in preaching the gospel of His Son, is my witness how I constantly remember you in my prayers at all times…..’
It was not our preachers who gave us the freedom to worship; it was and is the soldier who was willing to do battle to keep that freedom. Local businesses rallied round offering vouchers as raffle prizes. Tweedies, Likewise, it is not the community worker who makes a great nation; SiDaYes, Salithai, Neo’s sports bar were extremely generous, as to were Spa it’s the soldier willing to stand in defence of it. It was not the lawyer tonic and Dreamwater Lounge. The Evangalismos Hospital gave the star prize who gave us the right to vote; it was and is the serviceman or woman of a HD, 3D, state of the art mammogram, unique to their Well Woman who is willing to die if necessary, to keep us from losing that right. centre.Total monies raised? €500! A great, fun day, where the ladies were happy to dart in and out of the rainy garden just to enjoy the last days of summer.
Just as the soldiers of both World Wars went to war so their children and neighbours could live in freedom, there is also another who left his home and went to walk among men so that evil could be dominated and defeated. That man is Jesus Christ, our Saviour. He left His Father in heaven and came down to earth to live as a man so that He could pay the ultimate price – give His life for our freedom.
The New Beginnings ladies luncheon group was created by Kathy Knevitt and Maxine O’Daly a few years ago. It has an open-invitation policy in as far as that everyone is welcome. The majority of the group have experienced some sort of New Beginning, be it happy or sad, so an uplifting, fun time is enjoyed by all. Everyone is welcome. A new luncheon venue is chosen monthly, We honour our servicemen and women for the sacrifices they make for us, but we worship Jesus Christ for the sacrifice He made for us collectively. The criteria? Diets are not mentioned! Tea-totalers not accepted! on the cross. Dress sizes under 12 excluded! only joking!
For more information of New Beginnings Ladies Luncheon Group contact Kathy Knevitt on Kathy.knevitt@gmail.com
We welcome you to join us for this year’s Remembrance Service on Sunday 12th November -10.30am in Peyia. There will be no service at Coral Star on 12th November.

Bereavement Counselling by Dr Vasilios Silivistris DipSup DipComp BA MA FRSH MBACP PhD
may experience some emotions related to one loss but different emotions due to another. This is Perfectly Normal
There is no set itinerary for grief, however, if there is a distinct lack of emotional response, or an emotional response so overwhelming that it begins to affect a person’s employment, education or personal relationships, then it may be best to consult a counsellor. Stages of Grief
‘Bereavement is probably one of the toughest things we have to face in life. It is a natural process of loss we have to experience as it makes us aware of our own mortality and those of our loved ones. Turning to bereavement counselling after the loss of a loved one is not an admission of weakness, but instead, it is an admission of the strength to seek help when it is needed.’
Though there is no set pathway for grief, it has been theorised that some distinct stages may be apparent in the bereaved as a fivestage process (D.I.A.(B).D.A.) Denial/numbness. Isolation. Anger. (Bargaining). Depression. Acceptance.
Bereavement counselling is a specialised type of counselling that involves supporting individuals who have experienced the loss of a loved one. This type of counselling helps him or her to work through their grief as well as perhaps learn coping mechanisms to help him or her when they are on their own. Bereavement counselling is recommended for anyone, of any age, whose loss seems overwhelming or whose life is being adversely affected by his or her grief. Understanding Grief
Grief can be described as the emotional response to the death of a loved one. Most often, grief is equated simply with sadness, though this is not exactly the case. Grief often involves a progression of different emotions and reactions that include shock and/or numbness, anxiety, anger and sadness. It may take days, weeks, months or even years for someone who is grieving to cycle through several different emotions, and some people never experience all of these emotions due to a particular loss. Others
18
However, this does not mean that all bereaved individuals will experience all stages and that all stages will be experienced in the same way, or that all stages will be experienced in the same order. This model may help others make sense of grief, but those who are bereaved should be concerned only with what they are feeling and how they are coping – not with fitting a theoretical model.

Bereavement Counselling.
Bereavement counselling aims are to help an individual explore his or her emotions. At the first meeting, the bereaved will likely be asked about his or her loss, about his or her relationship to the deceased, and about his or her own life now that he or she has lost a loved one. Answering these questions often means tapping into sadness or anger, so emotional outbursts should not be censored. Crying and yelling may come naturally during bereavement counselling and certainly will not offend the counsellor. Allowing an individual to explore his or her emotions without guilt or fault is often what appeals most about bereavement counselling. The length of time for which bereavement counselling will continue will most likely be decided between the counsellor and the bereaved, and will likely be discussed as counselling progresses.

Stage One Theatre Invites you to Meet ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ It is with tremendous excitement, considerable pride, plus huge amounts of dedication that Stage One Theatre, Emba presents the December production ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ directed by Cathy Asater and sponsored by Petz Stuff. This award-winning musical is based on a series of stories about a poor Jewish milkman Tevye living in a village in Russia at the turn of the 20th century. Life then was as precarious as being a ‘fiddler on a roof’. Stage One invites you to enjoy this story of Tevye’s attempts to marry off his daughters through the traditional services of the village matchmaker. Times are changing however and his daughters are looking for love with a man of their own choice. There is also the risk of danger as the community is threatened by political events which may bring an end to the villagers’ old way of life. Expect tears, laughter, song, dance and the feel-good factor. The musical has been performed to great acclaim across the globe, winning Tony awards for best musical, best score and best book. It ran for ten years on Broadway after opening there in 1964. Now, it comes to Paphos at the tail end of a fabulous year as City of Culture for 2017. Stage One played its part with the usual yearly offering of four plays but also put on a Festival which showcased drama, comedy song and dance. Dates for ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ are as follows:
A preview performance on Sunday 3rd December at 3.00pm (reduced price tickets). Evening performances on Tuesday 5th - Saturday 9th December at 7.30pm. All seats are bookable at €12 with concessions, half price for children under 12 and students. How to book:

LIVE MUSIC IN PAPHOS - www.nitbats.com November 2017 Paphos. Chris King & the Firebirds are continuing their 2017 Memory Lane Tour by returning to all the venues where they played to packed houses throughout the summer, and adding some new ones. The group - consisting of Chris King, Johnny Black, Stan the Man on drums and recent addition Johnny Mac - are well known at the western end of the island. The Cyprus Weekly reviewed the Firebirds’ inaugural show in June and called them ‘the rock’n’roll masters of Cyprus for their infectious, vibrant interpretation of all the music greats. The show has one mission: to bring rock’n’roll into the 21st century! It does this by way of a dynamic three part journey to start classic rock and roll from the 50’s and 60’s; Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis & Buddy Holly to name but a few. Then into the 70’s and 80’s, including Cliff Richard, Shaking Stevens and Showaddywaddy. The third set brings the audience into the 21st century with new numbers written by songwriter/ musician, Johnny Black, especially for this Firebirdstour of Cyprus, including the now exceedingly popular ‘Rocking on the Island of Love’. Chris King and The Firebirds are an original band, writing and producing their own brand of rock music for this century; adding something new for the original rock’n’roll generation of fans and also bringing the whole package to the younger generation to help keep rock and roll alive forever. Celebrate St Michaels’s Day! The St Michaels’ Hospice Charity (SMHC) is celebrating St Michael’s ‘Name Day’ on Wednesday November 8th, with an action-packed party at the Colosseum Restaurant, Paphos.
So, the Colosseum is the place to be on November 8th; Ben Mills has agreed to perform as Michael Bublé - and also himself - and the Colosseum is famous for its fantastic food and entertainment space.
This will be the second celebration the Charity has run on this date, hoping to include all SMHC supporters - of which there are over 200 volunteers - because St Michael and, in his guise as Archangel, has been the name that inspires all who work for this purpose-built, stateof-the art Hospice in Mesa Chorio. The depth of patient care here is outstanding; this article is not the place to extoll it. Instead, stand up and be counted for the St Michael’s Name Day celebration and you will have ample chance to learn more of what is done at the Hospice and meet volunteers as well. A proportion of the ticket price comes to the Charity, as do all profits from the raffle, which promises to be outstanding.
So whether or not your name is Michael, please save the date, get together a ‘Name Day’ party and book for the Colosseum night. Tickets @ €22 include a lavish buffet, live entertainment and the gala raffle, so it will be a night to remember. Book with the Colosseum 26 96 24 15 or through info@colosseumristorante.com. If your name is Michael and you wish to attend and be acknowledged, please check out the listing on the SMHC Facebook page, ‘like’ it and make your comment.

Turkish Provocation and Cyprus by Andreas C Chrysafis
The Turkish Cypriot administration has decided to play a new oppressive political game with total disregard of human rights – this time they directed their attention on the non-Muslim enclaved Cypriot minorities in the Turkish occupied part of Cyprus! They are now behaving in a similar manner and ways to Turkey’s appalling record on human rights – cruel and inexcusable!
provisions to the refugees. The Cyprus government on the other hand refuses to be blackmailed and reward Turkey’s occupation. Meanwhile, the refugees remain trapped victims of this new political charade. Mr. Akinci and his regime should be ashamed for resorting to such low and disgraceful practices at a time when they are supposedly “seeking a reunification solution” to the Cyprus problem.
For the first time ever – after 43 years – they have refused to allow the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICIP) to deliver food aid to enclaved Greek Cypriots and Maronites refugees – not even milk for school children!
It would not be surprising to hear soon another declaration annexing the occupied area of Cyprus as a new province of Turkey - just like the declaration of the TRNC, which also caught the Greeks napping at the time! Ankara has already installed water pipelines and electrical cables form the mainland to service its new conquest.
The TC regime chose to breach all international humanitarian laws as adopted in Article 61 of the Forth Geneva Convention of 1947. It decided to disregard that law without a hint of humanity whatsoever. Why such a heartless and callous decision? It’s simple - this is Turkey’s way to consolidate its absolute control over Cyprus. They have been systematically and timely executing Plan B and C for years in an attempt to erase all remaining remnants of Hellenic and Christian influence there for the ultimate Islamization of the island! Ankara’s latest racist ethnic cleansing instructions to the TC regime, is not something new but is part of its genetic and historical makeup. They have done it on numerous times before! One can never forget the genocide and slaughter of the Armenian and Asian Greeks where millions perished under Ottoman brutality. One cannot forget Ankara’s recent viciousness committed against thousands of its own Turkish citizens, innocent journalists, academics and many others that are locked up in dungeons because they spoke against Erdogan’s dictatorship. Erdogan’s ethnic cleansing and the abolition of secularism is one way for Ankara to impose its dictatorial and theocratic Sunni Islamic rule on the island. Cyprus has now become a target and a victim to Erdogan’s distorted views of democracy and humanity. Only tyrants can come up with such policies using food deprivation as a weapon and punishment against the elderly population and a fragile sector of an ethnic community. From now on Ankara demands that the Government of Cyprus pays a weekly tribute at the crossings before allowing the UN to deliver
New Painting from Andreas Chrysafis Monobrow Muses displays a lively painting of three beautiful girls and skimpily wrapped in flawing gossamer silk. They share a unique feature prized by many cultures throughout history – monobrows! Prized in Ancient Greek and Roman cultures, they were considered beautiful and desirable features worn by most intelligent and lustafter women. Women often donned false monobrows to enhance their looks by using dyed goat’s hair attached with tree resin. The Old Testament considered removing the hairs or making boldness between the eyes was a sin. Monobrow Muses draws the viewers into a mystical and surreal world of beauty where those girls are seemingly about speak. Andreas C Chrysafis

This unwelcome development should serve as a bitter warning to the Cyprus government, which has failed to anticipate Turkey’s real intentions and done nothing about it. Instead, it chose a pacifying concessional and compromising policy, which the result of such a policy has now become apparent. This bad strategy has allowed Turkey’s poisonous fangs to grow bigger instead of yanking them out!
When that materializes, it would be impossible to avert and protect the Republic from Ankara’s annexation plans. Remember Constantinople? Greek politicians and the Cyprus government should all be ashamed for allowing this new development to take root under their very noses! As things stand, this charade has to come to an end because it cannot be allowed to continue and devour the Republic bit by bit. Cyprus should shut all the crossings throughout the Dead Zone; revoke all EU passports to Turkish Cypriots living in the occupied area; take radical steps and stop all EU structural Funds going to the occupied area; apply strong sanctions against Ankara and its TC puppet regime, but most importantly, make it abundantly clear to Turkey and Turkish Cypriots that under their current mentality, none would ever be able join the European Union unless Cyprus says so – it should certainly veto Turkey’s entry! Once the TCs recognize they can no longer have free movement to enjoy what the Republic and the EU has to offer they may well come to their senses and seriously reconsider their options: either be a part of an oppressive Islamic theocratic and illegal state in isolation, or choose to be a part of the European Union and EU-Cyprus, which both offer freedom of movement and opportunities protected by Rule of Law. Meanwhile dark clouds are looming over the land of Aphrodite of love, now in tears for what mindless people have done to her beautiful island…
Is your Portfolio Prepared for a Market Correction? by Mrs. Vivian Nagel, MCSI
Whether you are currently optimistic or pessimistic about where investment markets are heading having an element of ‘balance’ in your portfolio is always a prudent measure. Mature stock markets are still testing all time highs in some cases and no matter what global disaster or political mess arises of late, markets continue to go up. There are some companies that continue to thrive but there seems little sign of consumers increasing spending or industry and commerce growing at the pace that stock prices would lead you to believe. In my opinion it is the investors need for income that is fuelling the continued rise in stock markets given the lack of income from cash and fixed interest. There is no reason at the moment for this demand to wane as interest rates and bond income are unlikely to rise by a significant amount anytime soon. Nevertheless there will come a point when large investors start to disinvest and then prices will fall. It is impossible to predict when this may happen. There are many uncertainties in the world today and whilst so far none have ‘rocked’ markets in recent years no one can anticipate what event will cause investors to sell. Given this uncertainty it makes sense to prepare your portfolio for what will be an eventual outcome. As many investors will be underweight in Fixed Interest and probably overweight in equities there is limited choice in where to ‘park’ monies to provide balance to the portfolio. You could consider some exposure to alternative strategy funds which may weather market downturns better than the traditional asset classes but holding a decent amount of cash is a wise choice. But that is not making any return! I hear you say. Perhaps not, but it ensures that some of your portfolio is not subject to falls in value and if a correction occurs you are in a position to purchase cheaper assets. Review your portfolio either yourself or with your adviser and look at raising cash levels to diversify your portfolio, if you have not already done so. If you wish to discuss your asset allocation or need advice please contact me. Painting exhibition in Tala An exhibition of paintings by Michael Kearsey is being held at J & J Artworks Gallery in Tala Square on 10th, 11th and 12th December; the official opening is on Friday 10th December at 7.30pm.
Michael Kearsey grew up in Kent and studied there at the Ravensbourne School of Art. A skilled painter and watercolourist, he continued to exhibit his work over the years since leaving Ravensbourne, around a 23-year-long career as a fire-fighter in the London Fire Brigade and only began working full time on his art in 2001. He has generously donated paintings to his home village of Pachna in Cyprus and to charities here and abroad in support of cancer care and the Lupus Foundation in the States. Michael now lives in Cyprus and works from his studio in Pachna, using the medium of oils on canvas to evoke the moods of nature in his own expression of earth, sea and sky and also enjoys the freedom to explore the use of colour and technique in imaginative works of Art. The exhibition at J & J Art Works Gallery in Tala is an opportunity for people to see a range of subjects by this very skilled artist. You are all welcome!

Maggie’s Beauty Tip MAGGIE’S BEAUTY TIP Bring your wardrobe bang up to date with our guide to the colours, shapes and must-have pieces. Pearly Queen – look out for pearls and studs this Autumn/Winter – on sweaters, shoes, bags and earrings. Pair with leather-look, tie-belted cropped trousers and killer heels for a dash of rock chick cool. Modern Heritage – a shot of bright orange lifts the classic camel coat and check trouser combination. This cover-up is a great staple and will work just as well with neutrals, or you could try head-totoe colour for a polished look. Shearling Delight (faux, of course!) – soft sumptuous fabrics in shades of cream and neutrals will always look expensive, even when the price tag is very reasonable. It’s the cheat’s way to luxe up your look. Well Suited – the trouser suit is an essential buy. The boxy jacket is a real figure flatterer and, paired with slim cropped trousers, makes the perfect statement when you need to impress. Change it up by wearing the jacket with a rollneck and black trousers, or team the trousers with a smart blouse for no-fuss style. Seventies Vibe – Laura Ashley is remembered fondly for its floral print dresses in the 1970s, and the 2017 update is soft frills with florals which will add a touch of femininity, and you can accessorise with a faux-fur scarf, high boots and a saddle bag for that retro feel. Colour Splash – ladylike and luxe, red is the hottest hue right now. A scarlet skirt with a print blouse is chic and smart for a lunch date or a trip into town. The top would also look great with your jeans for off-duty cool.
Victoriana Moment – for contrast, pair a pretty lacy Victoriana blouse with smart checked wide-legged trousers. A versatile buy, you could also wear the top with jeans and your favourite boots for a different look. Sports Luxe – get an update to your casual style with an injection of metallics for daytime. Trainers, a slouchy knit and a pleated skirt can be our go-to look when you don’t have time to think about what to put with what – fabulously easy! Check It Out – throw a check coat over sleek, dark berry shades for an instant autumn update. Culottes always add a modern edge – especially when paired with chic accessories! Maggie Wright, Colour Me Beautiful Consultant. Special offer – colour consultation without wallet..... only €30. maggiecmb@yahoo.co.uk or call 99318477. Great for a Christmas gift.

Club News Shogun Short Mat Bowling
Well, you can tell that winter is slowly approaching because our bowling calendar has now got very full. The 6th, 7th and 8th of October saw the playing of the National Short Mat Bowling Finals at The Mimosa Hotel in Protarus. This was to find the best teams and individuals on the island. The competition was of a very high standard and with some nail-biting games. Representing Shogun were Terry Murrell, Malcolm Hughes, Jim Allison, Catherine Allison, Patricia French and Malcolm French. We reached two finals - the mixed pairs and gent’s singles. Malcolm Hughes and Catherine Allison were in the mixed pairs but after a gallant effort were overcome by the favourites - Kevin & Ann Males of the host club; but it was a great match and they both performed extremely well. Congratulations to them. Unfortunately, the same fate befell Jim Allison. He lost out to another host club player who was also highly fancied. Again - bad luck but congratulations to Jim for reaching the final. [bold heading]Polis Short Mat Bowling Club On Tuesday 10th October, we had the pleasure of entertaining members of the newly-formed Polis Short Mat Bowling Club. They have progressed to a very good standard in such a short time as many of their members are new to short mat bowling. About 12 of their players joined us for an integrated roll-up. It was good to enjoy their company and we look to continue our good relationship with them. At the end of October, we had the Mimosa Charity weekend at Protarus. Sandwiched in-between the Charity Day we had Ten’s
matches against Kiti (near Larnaca) Short Mat Bowling Club and the Kama Short Mat Bowling Club (Protarus). So, a busy time all round. If you think you would enjoy the sport, why not pop along to one of our roll-up sessions. We meet three times a week on Tuesday, Thursday and Malcolm and Catherine with their trophies Sunday and we presented by Chris Parry of 3D Global meet at 9.30am for a 9.45am start. We play at the Shogun Karate Club which is situated on the main road in Emba. You will be made very welcome. Paphos Classic Vehicle Club
Paphos Classic Vehicle Club is a group of people who either own or appreciate classic vehicles and enjoy getting together, using and discussing them. We usually hold our monthly socials at the Ayios Epiphanios Taverna in Anarita on the third Saturday of the month at 4.00pm. On the 23rd September we were joined by our friends from the Classic car touring club at the Episkopi Fete in Happy Valley where over 40 vehicles were on display. Thanks to all members who brought along their classic cars, especially to Trevor with his immaculate Model “T” Ford, which received special attention from all who saw it a little gem. In conjunction with the Classic Car Museum in Limassol, 12 teams from our club entered the 4th Theotakos Regularity Challenge on 1st October. This charity rally was in awareness and support of the foundation and the work they do for the handicapped. Fifty vehicles took part with our members having good success with many taking various awards. Many events are still being planned for this year ending with a Boxing Day Lunch Run.
