Summer has arrived in earnest with temperature soaring … If you must go out wear a hat and drink lots of water! Summertime brings with it not only sunshine and lazy days on the beach, but also plenty of interesting events to attend, our pages are packed with things to do this month. The formidable ‘beastie’ on the cover this month reminds me of another summer insect, the cicada. Once the summer sun raises the ground temperature the sound of the cicada love song can be deafening. In fact, it’s the loudest song known in the insect world. Some species of cicadas register over 100 decibels when singing. Only males sing, trying to attract females for mating. They only survive one season as insects - sucking juices from the trees and mating. But their larva burrow into the ground and stay there up to 17 years before emerging, climbing trees, and starting the cycle over again. Keep your cool and I’ll be back next month,

Terry Taylor; ‘brilliant supporter for SMHC’ The St Michaels’ Hospice Charity (SMHC) trustees recorded a sincere vote of thanks to SMHC member, musician/ singer Terry, in their July newsletter to members and supporters. Terry has over the years played numerous fund-raising gigs with his various ‘Arizona’ partners, the most recent one at Aphrodite’s Rock Brewery, Tsada, in June with Pauline Parr. In a sell-out, standing-room-only, evening event, the fundraising total exceeded €500 and the lucky winner of the top raffle prize - two tickets to Dublin from Larnaca courtesy of Cobalt Air and the outgoing Irish Ambassador, Nicholas Twist - was won by Joy Trotter who works at the Brewery. ‘It’s a brilliant evening,’ remarked one guest - who knew all the words to ALL the songs! - obviously well pleased. The music, the charming al-fresco location and the ambience all made for a fantastic night’s entertainment.

Terry & Pauline - Arizona

Paradise Bar in Chlorakas, where he regularly performs - he is the favourite of all the dance-mad Friday-night patrons … so do get along to Polemi! All the SMHCharity shops continue to bring in excellent revenue from donations, says SMHC Chairman/Shops Co-ordinator, Andrew Lauder, and all the volunteers are also to be sincerely praised for their efforts. Andrew has pledged to upgrade all the shops and to improve the signage; see the ‘new look’ at the Geroskipou shop (Seven St George’s Road, open daily 10am2pm except Sundays) where the new livery is really eye-catching. The Pano Paphos shop will be relocating on 1st August to a new position; be sure to put 5th August in your diary for the Gala Opening Day, with entertainment and more. Visit www. stmichaels-hospice-charity.com for the up to date information nearer the time. Bracken, our poster dog for Paphiakos canine blood donation and sponsored walk fund-raiser for SMHC, was also complimentary as she snoozed in time to music; more about her in future issues as she remains constant in our hearts. Thanks also go to the Brewery and staff, plus all the guests who donated so generously for those valuable one-time-only prizes! Terry has also put his services forward in his second persona - The Sunset Music Man - for the grand 4th birthday bash at the Polemi St Michael’s Hospice Charity shop on July 22nd. A brilliant day is promised, starting at 10.00am with refreshments, giggles and lots more; ‘Let the mayhem begin!’ said one FB post (see Polemi FB page). The Polemi shop was started by Geoff Eccleston whose untiring efforts have made this more than just a charity shop although it also reigns supreme as such - but also as the core of the community. The birthday bash will offer a really good morning out and, if you live in the area and don’t know it, do make an effort to get there. Polemi is more than just the tulip season! The Sunset Music Man is a well-thought-out disco format where the audience gets to choose the songs and Terry plays them; in other venues - like the

From West To East The Greatest Transfer of Wealth and Power in the History of Mankind

far more interested in trade, commerce, and the development of their two nations, along with those of their neighbouring countries, than engaging in military conflict. Indeed, the Western mainstream media have been guilty of egregiously misleading Western society about these two nations, their leaders, their intentions, and their aspirations. The storyline of The Greatest Transfer of Power and Wealth in the History of Mankindis inextricably intertwined with that of the Puppeteers. Together, they make a fascinating narrative, full of intrigue and deception. The root causes of the 2008 financial and economic crisis were never properly addressed. Global debt levels have exploded since 2008 and the writer clearly outlines why it is a matter of when, rather than if, the next crisis hits and with far more devastating results. Matters between the West and the East are likely to come to a head when the next crisis erupts and G20 agreement cannot be reached on an acceptable course of action to address the root causes of that crisis. The implications for billions of people around the world will be profound and are outlined in some detail. For those that may be interested, the book’s URLs are as follows:

The writer makes absolutely no pretentions that this book is an academic work per se. Rather, it is a sincere attempt to inform the reader about issues of profound importance, which the western mainstream media have deliberately failed to address truthfully and openly. The book has been written in a manner, that makes it easily understood by those unfamiliar with such topics, as well making the contents both interesting and fascinating. It is about the very gradual shift in the tectonic plates of global power and wealth, from the West to the East (primarily China and Russia), which became perceptible around the start of this millennium. Since 2008 the movement in those tectonic plates has been picking up speed, and is now noticeable. We are approaching the final stages of what will be seen, in retrospect, as the greatest transfer of power and wealth in the history of mankind. How long this process will take to complete is impossible to predict, but the next three or four years will be crucial. Within the principal storyline, there is a secondary storyline regarding a small group of ultra-ultra wealthy family dynasties. The writer will refer to this small group of families as the ‘Puppeteers,’ because they operate, unseen, from behind the curtain, pulling the strings of ‘The Powers That Be’ (TPTB).Their ultimate goals are a One World Currency and One World Government. The reader may think that the Puppeteers are just another conspiracy theory. However, by the end of chapter one, the reader will probably arrive at the same conclusion as the writer: that the Puppeteers do exist. The Puppeteers, through their puppets, TPTB in the West, are waging a war with the East, primarily China and Russia, because they refuse to accept vassal nation status in a USA unipolar world. This war is being waged financially and economically, as well as through regime change, proxy military action, and direct military action. China and Russia seek a multipolar world, where nations respect the sovereign rights of other nations, and felt compelled to form an extraordinarily close alliance across the full spectrum in order to resist subjugation to the status of US vassal nations. China and Russia have shown, through their actions, that they are

How To Get Rid OF A.N.T.S by David Waite

Everyone who has lived in a hot country has probably been bothered by ants at some time or other. They get into places they shouldn’t and can be a total nuisance. But there is another type of ‘ant’ - A.N.T. which can be even more distressing, and yet many people are unaware of their power or presence in their lives. And they would even be more surprised to hear that G.R.U.B.S could easily solve the problem. Let me explain. A.N.T. stands for Automatic Negative Thoughts. When people who have this problem have an idea put to them – let’s say a fun day at the beach – they immediately think of all the potential things that could go wrong, taking everything to the extreme. So for a day at the beach they would immediately think of a possible accident on the journey there, the chance of someone getting drowned while in the sea, sunshine causing cancer, and the house being burgled while they are away! This type of negative thinking can develop when a person is very young especially if they have had over protective or domineering parents who have not let their children explore and enjoy life within reasonable safety limits. Sometimes it is because people at a vulnerable age have been exposed to horror films or books which have allowed a fear to come into their lives affecting their personality which they then constantly have to fight against. The Bible recognises that the mind is a battleground, and today, probably more than at any time in history, negative forces are bombarding the minds of people constantly through radio, TV, the worldwide web and the cinema. Depression now kills more people every year in America through suicide, than automobile accidents. The answer is to retrain the mind to think positively on the securities that life offers. Everyone can choose to think positively, but it takes discipline and maybe a little spiritual help. This is what the Bible says: “ Whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy--meditate on these things.” (Php 4:8 NKJV) This is where another creature comes to our aid – the G.R.U.B. Now you may be thinking that a grub is not a very attractive ally, but in this case G.R.U.B stands for Good, Reflective, Unhurried and Beautiful thoughts. If everyone suffering from A.N.T.S started to turn their thoughts to G.R.U.BS for a short while every day, the A.N.T.S would soon realise that they had lost, and disappear. The Bible is a rich source of material which allows the reader to meditate on the goodness and kindness of God. Psalm 23 is a good example, stating how when we have God as our Shepherd we suffer no want, and He makes sure that we are safe in every aspect of our life, even when death finally approaches. The book of Proverbs is also a wonderful book to read a chapter of each day, sharing with the reader distilled wisdom which has come down the ages. You might also find that the G.R.U.B.S turn into beautiful butterfly moments to enjoy.

16

One last bit of insect information. Technically, a bumble bee shouldn’t be able to fly – but nobody told it that, so it does. So when the A.N.T.S have departed and the G.R.U.B.S have done their work, you could just end up with a ‘can do’ attitude like the humble bumble bee! grapevine | your local community meeting place | july 2017 issue

What is Mindfulness? by Dr Vasilios Silivistris DipSup DipComp BA MA FRSH MBACP PhD

Mindfulness is an integrative, mind-body based training that helps people to change the way they think and feel about their experiences, especially stressful experiences, and is recommended as a treatment for people with mental health problems. What is Mindfulness?

Is an integrative, mind-body based training that enables people to change the way they think and feel about their experiences, especially stressful experiences. Mindfulness: pays attention to thoughts, feelings and body sensations to become directly aware of them, and better able to manage them; is of potential value to everybody to help find peace in a frantic world. People who have learned mindfulness: experience long-lasting physical and psychological stress reduction; discover positive changes in well-being; are less likely to get stuck in depression, exhaustion, and are better able to control addictive behaviour. The Benefits of Mindfulness

Practising mindfulness helps you: to be fully present, in the here and now. to become aware of what you are avoiding. to become more connected to yourself, to others and to the world around you. to increase self-awareness to become less disturbed by and less reactive to unpleasant experiences.

improve focus and concentration. increase self-awareness. reduce the impact and influence of stressful thoughts and feelings. facilitate better relationships. catch self-defeating behaviours, and substitute more effective ones. become aware of self-defeating thought processes, and ‘let them go’. All of this boils down to three major benefits: improved performance, reduced stress, and greater satisfaction in work and life. Mindfulness and Therapy

Mindfulness training has emerged as a powerful, evidence-based tool for enhancing psychological health. It has been clinically proven in a wide range of clinical disorders, including chronic pain, anxiety disorders, depression, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), substance abuse, and borderline personality disorder (BPD). Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) is a psychological therapy designed to aid in preventing the relapse of depression, specifically in individuals with Major depressive disorder (MDD). Clinical trials have shown that MBCT is as effective as antidepressants, and in patients with multiple episodes of depression can reduce the recurrence rate by forty-fifty percent compared with usual care. Mindfulness can be practiced by children, young people and adults. The evidence for mindfulness

Mindfulness treatment has been shown to affect how the brain works and even its structure. People undertaking mindfulness training have shown increased activity in the area of the brain associated with positive emotion (the pre-frontal cortex) which is generally less active in people who are depressed.

to have more direct contact with the world, rather than living through your thoughts.

More than one hundred studies have shown changes in brain wave activity during Mindfulness treatment. Furthermore, researchers have found that areas of the brain linked to emotional regulation are larger in people who regularly practice Mindfulness.

to learn that everything changes; that thoughts and feelings come and go.

The evidence for different types of mindfulness is promising and research has grown in recent years.

to learn the distinction between you and your thoughts

to have more balance, less emotional volatility. to experience more calm and peacefulness. to develop self-acceptance and self-compassion. Benefits of Mindfulness in Life and Work

The practise of mindfulness enables you to:

Trio Tekke was created in London in 2005 and has already made two internationally successful albums (The Regetics [2009] and Samas [2011]). Louis Armstrong, Kid Ory, Sidney Bechet and revived in the ‘1960’s by Chris Barber, Acker Bilk, Kenny Ball and many more. The Droushia Dixie Seven band was formed three years ago by a group of now retired musicians from London, now living in Cyprus, who actually played with some of the greatest traditional jazz musicians from the sixties revival and who are able to reproduce the authentic sounds of that era. The rhythm section is led by Lord Worth on banjo. Now, added to the veterans, are two talented young Cypriot musicians, Chris Demetriou on string bass and Alex Sophocleous on drums. Firebirds Set to Win Over Cyprus Audiences At the inaugural Firebirds gig at the Colosseum roof garden last month in Paphos, the audience were on their feet, cheering - and dancing -and generally having a brilliant time. Amazing music, high octane performance and a recreation of all that was good about rock’n’roll in the decades between the 50s and the 80s. A sell-out performance that was so well-received it was re-booked immediately for two repeat shows later in the year. Chris King and the Firebirds are the new rock’n’roll masters and their aim is to bring rock‘n’roll back into the 21st century; to introduce the dynamic music to a new generation who missed out on the excitement of the original era. Enjoy three sets of live music spanning from the 50s to the 80s; from Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis and Cliff Richard to the Beatles, Showaddywaddy and Shakin Stevens plus a whole lot more in between. Firebirds is headed by Chris King of Elvis fame; almost the quintessential Elvis performer in Paphos, Chris is not so much a ‘tribute act’ as he is the man himself. The Firebirds is a new extension of what Chris does best; rock’n’roll, now about to rolled out across the island with the Firebirds 3-part live show. A brilliant repertoire supported by great local musicians; one who lived in that era - guitarist/vocalist Johnny Mac - plus John A on bass guitar and Stan the Man - drums - both of whom have been known for their rock music at the western end of the island for a decade or more. All the Firebirds bring unique talent and experience to the group. Chris of course, but now as an equal member, not as a performer in his own right. Then Stan: drummed with the best of glam-rock bands in UK before coming to Cyprus and has since performed with many local acts, including at Elea with Ian G ‘Strings attached’ in 2015/6 and again recently in 2017. Bring on Johnny Mac; went to school with David Bowie and knew all the rock’n’roll stars back in the day; Johnny M grew up with rock in his blood. Plays a fine guitar and performs a mean Buddy Holly vocal; ‘Maybe Baby’ was a brilliant and gentle perfection at the Colosseum on the opening night and his love of Buddy Holly music will shine throughout the group’s series of gigs. Enter John A - well known locally but preferring to be a little more in the background with Firebirds. John is a musician/singer/songwriter par excellence and is writing new music for the Firebirds. The first, ‘My name in a heart’ was performed in the last set at the Colosseum; expect many more to come. Firebird gigs include:

Shogun Short Mat Bowling Saturday 20th May was the Charity Day for the Kiti Short Mat Bowling Club. This is an inter Club competition for all the Short Mat Bowling Clubs in Cyprus with all proceeds going to various charities selected by the host club.

Shogun Short Mat Ten’s Team

Shogun was represented by nine of their members and four of them - Derek Smith, Carol Halkett, Catherine Allison and Jim Allison all reached the semi final stages. Jim was in the team which reached the final but after conceding six shots at the fourth end trailed 10 shots to 2 and they did well to pull back but eventually lost 10-7. Malcolm Hughes on behalf of Shogun thanked the Kiti club for all their hard work and effort in making the day a success. The main sponsor of the event was Chris Parry of 3D Global Wealth Management. Ten’s League

The concluding Ten’s League match for Shogun took place at Kiti Short Match Bowling Club on Wednesday 31st May. This was an important match for us as the outcome would determine whether we would finish bottom of the League or not! Fortunately, although we lost by 12 points to 8, the 8 points were sufficient to take up one place. Well done team! New Club

Such is the popularity of Short Mat Bowls that a new club has been formed in Polis. This is a welcome addition to the Short Mat family and we wish them every success. We look forward to playing with and against them and are certain that all their members will enjoy the sport. They have received encouragement from both Star Short Mat club and ourselves and we are pleased to have helped them out with two of our surplus mats. Short Mat Bowling is a sport which is enjoyed by all age groups so why not come and give it a try. We normally meet three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. We meet at 9.30am for a 9.45am start and the venue is the Shogun Karate Club in Emba. Charity News Aphrodite Bra Ladies

CPSG Events for July Saturday 8th July - Summer Fete at Kallepia Church Square

‘The Ladies Who Link’, more commonly known as Aphrodite Bra Ladies, are on a roll, whilst we are still collecting bras for the challenge, we have lots of people now coming forward and helping us with fundraising for Archangel Michael Hospice. We have had the lovely Melissa Lowndes who, instead of celebrating her 40th birthday by having a party, organized a fundraising event at the Sunflower Bistro, and over €500 was raised. Paphos Classic Vehicle Club nominated us as their charity of the day, and allowed us to hold a raffle and sell our hearts on the day and this enabled us to pass over yet another €500. Dimis, the owner of the Cyprus Motor Museum, gave a VIP tour of his museum for a day for 15 people as one of the major prizes. This is alongside other prizes donated by Dawn at the Beauty Spot, Latchi Water Sports and also Costas Taverna at Koloni. At the time of printing we were unsure how much was raised at the summer BBQ at the Vinyard Taverna Letymbou, but I’m sure a brilliant night was had by everyone. We are also receiving help in the annual fun day at Yiannis Taverna, Kathikas, organized by the village residents association. This is being held on the 13th October. Thank you for your kindness and the support from all these people. We will be having our Money Trail down by Paphos Harbour again this year on 24th September, Last year we made just under €3,000, so please help us to break this number this year. We are looking for volunteers for this event, especially Greek speakers. If you can help in anyway, please contact Ruth on 99389073.

From 12 noon onwards. Entrance €2, children under 12 free. Pets Corner, Bouncy Castle, live Music, Dance displays, Food, Hot & Cold Drinks. Royal Ascot Race Day raises €1,600 The 7th Royal Ascot Race Day organised by In Any Event took place on Saturday 24th June at Elea Golf Club. The whole terrace area was transformed for a day at the races and racegoers were greeted with a glass of Pimms. The charity tote on behalf of Cancer Patients Support Group and Riding for the Disabled in Cyprus opened shortly afterwards and guests were able to have a flutter throughout the day while watching the live racing from Ascot. A fabulous lunch was served, fitting for a day at the races and the champagne corks were popping in true Ascot style. Everyone dressed for the occasion and there were some amazing hats and fascinators. A charity raffle took place with some fabulous prizes which, coupled with the charity tote, raised €1,600. Organisers said: “A big thank you to everyone who supported the event, Blevins Franks for being a sponsor and to all the companies who donated fabulous prizes for such a worthy cause, look forward to seeing everyone again next year”.

Mona and Linda are organizing more of their famous coach trips. On Thursday 28th September, they have arranged a trip to the Vasilikon Winery, Kathikas. New Geneva Talks & Cyprus by Andreas C Chrysafis

The conference for the ultimate dissolution of the Republic of Cyprus is about to start again. The same institution that has failed to implement a single one of its unanimously adopted UN Security Council Resolutions on Cyprus has organized yet another meeting this month on 28th of July. For some, while the UN Geneva2 initiative offers a cautious degree of “legitimacy and credence” the Cyprus government embarrassingly hails this as a diplomatic victory of sorts. One wonders what justifies their exuberance to praise the Unite Nations when for 43 years their efforts did not amount too much but in fact they failed to adopt their own resolutions to isolate Turkey for its military invasion and occupation of 40% of the island. When it comes to the Cyprus issue offering false hope and “pies in the sky” for political expediency, has always been the norm. That is all about to change now. The new summit will implicate a demoted Cypriot President to a Greek Cypriot community leader (not the recognized President of the Republic of Cyprus); the Turkish Cypriot community leader of the pseudo-TRNC; the three foreign ministers of the 1960 guarantor powers (Greece, Britain and Turkey) as well as a new player on the block; the European Union, which will act as an observer! Hidden away from public scrutiny this critical gathering will go ahead under strict conditions that no leaks can reach the press or the people until the bartering game is over. Its main objective ¬¬is to carve up the island’s integrity and seek ways to rescind a referendum as promised to the Cypriot people on the issue! Through a well-planned collusion to mislead citizens, the signing of the Geneva agreement would probably be ratified by a “parliamentary decision” and not a referendum. Those in favour of a federated partitioning solution will certainly not risk another “NO” vote similar to the ill-fated UN Annan Plan. Instead, the government will try its utmost to deprive the electorate the opportunity to cast a vote. The horse-trading in Geneva2 will entail one basic principle: “some constitutional powers and territorial rights for you and some for me!” They are gambling that an agreement will succeed so the Republic Andreas C Chrysafis is a prolific artist, a published author and a writer of over four hundred articles and a recognized Saatchi artist. His vivid colourful paintings touch the human soul and certainly spark pleasure and marvel but also generate mind stimulation. Many of his paintings spur inquisitiveness, interpretation and are sold to collectors worldwide. He held a number of solo exhibitions and his inspiring work has been attracting attention in the art world and galleries but also the press where many of his paintings have been published in magazines and newspapers. One of his paintings “Karagiozis” now permanently hangs at the prestigious National Cyprus Art-Folk Museum in Nicosia and “N’oublie Pas Paris” in memory of the Bataclan atrocity; it’s displayed at the French Embassy in Nicosia.

of Cyprus will be dissolved and replaced by a new EU Cyprus and problem solved! Pathetic! This ghastly attempt to break up the sovereign state of Cyprus goes against the basic fabric of the United Nations, European Union and the free world. One does not reward a military action by bully nations such a Turkey for political convenience. If so, there is no hope with such dysfunctional mentality but rather confirms there are no principles in politics but simply self-interests! Since everyone knows that Erdogan makes all decisions why is he not in Geneva and around the table during the talks? The answer is simple; his absence can be viewed as a classic Ottoman ploy that provides Ankara an open window for a quick escape! Just like the last time, when Turkey’s foreign minister abruptly walked out of the Mont Pelerin session to “receive instructions from Erdogan” and never returned! Cleverly, Mr. Erdogan as the head of the state will never allow himself to be cornered in such a precarious political situation and yet Mr. Anastasiades is more than ready to be humiliated again as before. It is most probable that the same ploy for a “quick escape” would be repeated again this time around and there is a good reason for that; Turkey has no intention of changing the status quo! Why should it when a submissive Greek side is ready and willing to accept the partition of their own country under a pseudo Federation? The political expectations at the Geneva2 negotiations pose grave uncertainty and could become the nail in the coffin for the Republic of Cyprus. Under the current geo-political climate and the discovery of vast natural gas deposits, any Geneva2 agreement would ensnare Cyprus into an unpalatable situation – just like the 1960 Zurich Agreement did for the fledgling Republic. Worse, under Muslim radicalism it could bring about social and ethnic instability for years to come. One does not want that! It is much wiser to walk away before it’s too late. If Cyprus is to survive as a free nation, it is critically important to develop a new dynamic policy to deal with Turkey’s intransigence; a policy so badly missing for so many years. But most importantly, one has to break out of the Proverbial Box. The proposed Geneva2 negotiations are aimed to seal the lid tightly and when that happens, it will be the end of Hellenic Cyprus. www.facebook.com/ACChrysafisAuthor www.facebook.com/ACChrysafisArtGallery Andreas, was born in a small village in Cyprus to Greek parents and began painting at a very young age. At the age of 12 he moved to the UK where he finished his studies at Holland Park Comprehensive in London. While at school, he was accepted to enter the esteemed Royal Academy of Music in London but declined. Those experiences of tender years, helped to develop his character for what he is today. An ex-Associate Member of the Chartered Society of Designers (ABID) by Royal Charter, he practiced his profession as an architectural designer for most of his life. Without a doubt he’s a complex man with an inquisitive mind that always aims for excellence in everything he does. He is credited with a UK Patent; a thinker, an environmentalist and an advocate for Human Rights, Equality and Rule of Law. As a Canadian and a British citizen he lived most of his adult life in Vancouver, British Columbia and London as well as Cyprus. Married to Eva he now spends most of his time living in the UK and his studio in Cyprus painting and writing novels.

Power of Attorney by Mrs. Vivian Nagel, MCSI

A Power of Attorney (POA) is a legal document that gives the power to another person to sign legal documents on your behalf if you are unable to be in a certain place at a certain time to sign yourself or you are incapable of making sound decisions.

Types of Powers of Attorney in Cyprus The Contract Law in Cyprus allows for two types of POAÂ to be issued: the general and the specific power of attorney. General Power of Attorney

Allows an agent to sign any document on your behalf. Specific Power of Attorney (Task or Time)

Limited by Task This is usually granted for a certain purpose only, (the task)

There are various types of POA depending on country, each country may call them by a different name or have ones that encompass more than one situation but generally the following are the most common.

Limited by Time

Non-Durable Power of Attorney

No matter what age you are you should consider having a POA as in the unfortunate event something happens to you it will be too late.

Used only for a specific period of time and usually for a particular transaction in which you grant your agent authority to act on your behalf. Once the transaction is completed, or should you become incapacitated during this time, the non-durable power of attorney ceases. Durable Power of Attorney

This can be used to allow an agent to manage all of your affairs should you become unable to do so. It does not have a set time period and it becomes effective immediately upon your incapacitation. It expires upon your death. Limited Power of Attorney

Used on a limited basis for one-time financial or banking transactions, or for the sale of a particular property. This is most often used when you are unable to complete the transaction due to prior commitments or illness and want to appoint an agent to act on your behalf. The agent has no other authority to act for you other than what is assigned to them in the limited power of attorney.

Will be limited by time (usually be granted for a certain period) It is always advisable to use a lawyer in the jurisdiction that you want the POA to apply (It can be worded to apply in more than one jurisdiction)

Many people put off starting a savings plan for retirement, ensuring they have sufficient life insurance cover, writing a will and creating a POA. All of these actions are crucial to your financial planning. This article is for information purposes only and should not be construed as advice. Legal advice should be sought when creating a POA and financial advice should be sought for savings, pension and investment requirements. Vivian Nagel, MCSI, Elgin Insurance Agents, sub-Agents and Advisors. Tel: +357 99579149 E-mail: v.nagel@elgininsuranceltd.com Elgin Insurance Agents, Sub-Agents and Advisors is regulated by the Cyprus Insurance Companies Control Service (license number 21FOS) and is licensed as an insurance intermediary. It has passporting rights to various EU countries including the UK, Spain, Sweden and the Czech Republic.

Medical Power of Attorney

This grants authority to the agent to take specific control over your healthcare decisions should you become incapacitated. This usually takes effect upon the consent of the medical professional in charge and it allows the agent to authorise all medical decisions related to you. In England and Wales there are 2 main types of POA: General Power of Attorney

This authorises the agent to look after financial/property matters only. Unless otherwise specified, an ordinary power of attorney will come to an end when you lose capacity. Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)

This allows the agent to act in either personal welfare matters or property matters. An LPA only becomes effective once it has been registered. Provided the LPA was created while you were mentally capable, the LPA can be registered at any time. The LPA replaced the Enduring Power of Attorney in October 2007. The LPA is a vital document which gives family members or close friends the authority to act on behalf of their loved one in the event of incapacity, physically or mentally. This gives you more control over what happens to you if you have an accident or an illness and can’t make your own decisions. You must be 18 or over and have mental capacity (the ability to make your own decisions) when you make your LPA. You don’t need to live in the UK or be a British citizen. grapevine | your local community meeting place | july 2017 issue

West Coast Runners Cyprus West Coast Runners Cyprus is celebrating the outstanding success of its recent Couch-to-5k programme!

At the end of March, we launched our first ever C25K with the aim of introducing more people to the joys and benefits of running, with the tried-and-tested walk/run method which is suitable for both complete beginners and anyone who wants to return to running. We were delighted when 12 intrepid wannabe runners turned up on the first night and even more delighted when an amazing 9 of them successfully completed the programme. We finished with a hugely enjoyable 5k run on 5th June along the coastal path in Paphos from the Lighthouse Beach. Many congratulations to Al, AnneMarie, Gill, Glenys, Keeley, Rita, Ruth, Stuart and Sue - what an achievement! Thanks are due to our wonderful club members who happily gave up their time each week to mentor, encourage and support all of our new runners. As it was so well received and successful, we plan to hold another C25K programme later in the year, so watch this space! However, if you are keen to start running now and don’t want to wait, just check out the New Runners page on our website for how to get started with us. We don’t think you’ll regret it - two of our recent C25K graduates, Anne-Marie and Ruth, now enjoy running so much that they even took part with the club in a recent 4x4k charity relay event in Limassol. They both did brilliantly and can’t wait to do more races - well done girls! For more information, find us on Facebook or at www. westcoastrunnerscyprus.org or phone Catherine on 99931530 or John on 99967895.

Club News Great Expectations Exceeded

OK so Miss Havisham and Pip did not turn up. Nevertheless we could not be more delighted at the numbers who not only turned up but signed up to join this great club after their sailing experience at the delightful harbour of Agios Georgios. Events such as these bring out the best in any club made up of volunteers. Overseen by our new Rear Commodore Sailing (RCS) Bob Sheward and superbly organised by Deputy RCS Neil Hodkin the event over two days went like clockwork. The boat park decorated with flags and pergolas; Reception Desk and Merchandise Stall fully staffed; our four club Wayfarers fully rigged looking resplendent at the launch slipway; Koula and Sinka our two Safety RIBS and their qualified crews already on the water; First Aiders and Beach Crew at the ready; ALL ready and waiting with fingers crossed for our first customers.

Next by Yeng Chow

Maybe it was the most beautiful sailing weather on both days; maybe we had done enough advertising; maybe this fantastic sport of dinghy sailing has really got noticed by people in Paphos. Not maybe but a resounding YES. Lots of people young and old turned up and had a great time. Testimony to this were the twenty two new members who signed up there and then. Well done Neil and Bob and the dinghy sailors, Robin, Jon, Chas and Mike our new Commodore, who helmed our Wayfarers and to the many other PISC members who made the two days magic. www.pisc.com.cy

Our club members are a happy bunch and would welcome any new or experienced bowlers joining us. We offer a good level of coaching both at individual and team basis.

Genes that causes a weak bladder Scientists have made a breakthrough in the treatment of female incontinence by identifying genes that trigger the condition.

Epidemiology at Imperial College London, addressed the European Society of Human Genetics on the subject.

Their discovery brings hope that the problem, which affects millions of women at some time in their lives, could eventually be cured by adapting existing drugs.

Dr Cartwright said: ‘Twenty-five per cent of adult women will experience incontinence severe enough to impact on their quality of life. Finding a genetic cause and a potential treatment route is therefore a priority.’

With 25 per cent of women experiencing incontinence bad enough to spoil their quality of life, the need for treatment is urgent, experts say.

The discovery brings hope that the problem could eventually be cured by adapting existing drugs.

Some 25 per cent of women experience incontinence bad enough to spoil their quality of life. At the moment therapies include pelvic floor exercises and bladder training with advice to drink less fluid and lose weight. In some cases it is treated surgically. The condition, which occasionally afflicts half of all women in varying degrees, is often brought on by natural childbirth, and the menopause, although some suffer from childhood. In more than half of all cases, the problem appears to be inherited. One in four women suffer ‘stress incontinence’ associated with laughing, sneezing, coughing, exercising or movements that put pressure on the bladder. The breakthrough has come about because the genes linked to urinary incontinence are already associated with two other conditions for which there are tested drug treatments. It is hoped those drugs, which are already available, could be adapted. Dr Rufus Cartwright, a visiting researcher in the Department of

Researchers studied 9,000 women from three groups in Finland and the UK. They found that the genes affecting incontinence were in a similar area to those connected with pulmonary hypertension and Raynaud’s syndrome – where spasms of the arteries reduce blood flow. Dr Cartwright said: ‘Previous studies had failed to confirm any genetic causes for incontinence. ‘Although I was always hopeful that we would find something significant, there were major challenges involved in finding enough women to participate, and then collecting the information about incontinence. It has taken more than five years of work.’ He added: ‘We know that a caesarean section offers substantial protection from incontinence. However, across Europe there are efforts to reduce caesarean section rates, and establishing such a screening programme during pregnancy may run against current political objectives in many maternity care systems.’
