Once again the Ribble Valley Jazz and Blues Festival is here! The team has been working hard to programme a festival with a plethora of styles to whet the appetite of the audience. There is something here for everyone from top UK headline bands, to fringe gigs, some genuine Blues, Street Jazz and workshops from incredible musicians. The committee has once more raised the game to bag some fabulous headline artists. On Saturday, the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO) will reveal the talents of some of the UK’s top young jazz players. On Sunday, one of Britain’s leading trombonists Dennis Rollins performs with his Velocity Trio. His CV reads like a who’s who in the musical fraternity, playing with the likes of Jamiroquai, Maceo Parker, Dionne Warwick and Sting. Then the great Snake Davis - ex Eurythmics and M People - will be showing

off his exceptional prowess on the saxophone with his own band. As usual there is much happening around the town and it is pretty much wall-to-wall music from start to finish. In my third year as festival president I am delighted and proud to be involved with this dedicated group of volunteers whose continued enthusiasm for this jazz festival must be commended! Ribble Valley Jazz and Blues is definitely in safe hands and this is a festival that delivers the very best in musical entertainment and value for money. Welcome to our 5th Annual Jazz Festival Yes! Over the May Day Bank Holiday Weekend, Ribble Valley Jazz & Blues celebrates its 5th Annual Jazz Festival. Since 2010 the festival team has worked hard developing Lancashire’s Premier Jazz Festival - a five day feast attracting top UK musicians & bands, ready to play in The Grand’s superb theatre. The Festival menu offers a fine list of free fringe gigs, focuses on youth music and a colourful blues stage, brings Saturday Street Jazz to Clitheroe town centre, and adds new concerts to village venues. We continue to innovate every year. The 2014 Festival programme should be branded Ribble Valley Jazz Festival Plus because we have added an extra day, and introduced pre & post festival gigs. Collaboration with Spot on Rural Touring starts the Festival a day earlier with Scotland’s Camerata Ritmata on Thursday evening 1st May at Grindleton Pavilion. A shared love of legendary saxophonist Ornette Coleman’s early quartet inspired their boldly monophonic instrumentation. The rock-solid rhythm section comprising Portishead duo Jim Barr (bass) and Clive Deamer (drums) forms the gloss that holds GTB together, with the dual saxophone and trumpet frontline working with the bass to create melodies and harmonies. The Bristol based four-piece have deftly ploughed their jazzy post-rock furrow since the release of “All Is Yes” back in 2008, daring enthusiastic comparisons to similarly inventive acts like Tortoise and Polar Bear. Mike Walker has performed with some of the world’s greatest jazz musicians over an incredible career, including Kenny Wheeler, Dave Holland & Vince Mendoza. You’ll also have seen him countless times at the Manchester Jazz Festival, with his Ropes commission in 2008, and co-leading The Impossible Gentlemen alongside Gwilym Simcock, Steve Swallow and Adam Nussbaum. Stuart McCallum describes his sound as ‘alternative jazz’, taking influences from jazz, electronica, rock, contemporary classical and everything in between. He performs all over the world as a member of the Cinematic Orchestra and has remixed Radiohead, as well as releasing his own critically acclaimed albums. Vocalist Julie Edwards and guitarist Kevin Dearden have worked exhaustively around the north of England and beyond. Julie and Kevin work as a duo and in larger formats playing mostly standards with own stylings. Julie studied at Leeds College of Music singing with the Duke Ellington Repertory Orchestra.

Kevin took up saxophone at 20, studied at the Royal Northern College of Music. He took up jazz guitar 6 years ago and has made a transition to playing guitar exclusively at gigs. Special guest appearance from ex-CRGS Swing Band musicians: pianist John Wickham, bassist Adam Lynch and drummer Tom Rice. Watch for a rash of CDs - CRGS Swing Band have a new CD entitled ’Tequila’, and John Wickham Trio are working on their first issue in time for the Festival.

The Berry Trio

Date: Friday 2nd May, 8pm - 10.30pm Venue: The Atrium Café Bar, Castle Hill, Clitheroe BB7 1BA Tickets: £10, Members £8 Bassist and composer, Steve Berry, has had a huge impact on jazz ever since the 1980s. A notable CV includes Loose Tubes, teacher at Chethams and the Royal Northern College of Music and founding Musical Director of Jam Factory, a Blackburn Community Jazz Orchestra which included his whole family! The Berry family have always made music at home in Blackburn since 1989. In the 90s they took jazz out into the local community, the whole family playing in the Jam Factory. The two eldest children, Jessica and Dan, have forged careers in London having achieved jazz degrees at the Royal Academy and Trinity College of Music. Jessica is one of the busiest and most in-demand singers in London. A prolific songwriter, her debut album is currently in production. Sax player Dan has played at London’s Vortex Club, and Reading and Leeds festivals. He plays and records as a solo improviser and with his horn section “The Brass Notes”.

They started to rock local venues with high energy and raucous slew of hot 60s RnB classics. The Ribble Jazz Festival gives all three an opportunity to join forces and collaborate on music reflecting a shared passion for jazz. RVJ&B has also promoted big band music in Lancashire for many years. We are delighted, therefore, to present the internationally celebrated NYJO as our Saturday night festival headliner. NYJO is one of the UK’s longest-running ensembles for young people under 25 playing big-band jazz. Founded by Bill Ashton OBE in 1965, the orchestra still fulfils its founder’s vision by offering aspiring young musicians the opportunity to rehearse, write and gain experience in live performance. NYJO features 23 musicians and vocalists from around the country - the

majority go on to become professional musicians. Alumni include Guy Barker, Mark Nightingale, Gerard Presencer, Pete Long, Dennis and Winston Rollins and Amy Winehouse. Members are encouraged to write their own arrangements and compositions, thereby creating a diverse repertoire to draw from in addition to classic big-band standards. National Youth Jazz Orchestra has around 40 albums to its credit. Its last album, The Change, was released to critical acclaim in September 2012. Saturday will be a good day for Big Band fans. In addition to hearing NYJO on Saturday evening, there will be a chance to listen to local school and community big bands during the daytime as part of the Street Jazz Festival. Gary’s career started in the 60s where his first big gig was with Dusty Springfield, then Lulu in ‘65. This was followed by a stint with Brian Auger and Julie Driscoll and recorded the album “Open”. Left for Leeds College of Music then joined folk/rock band, Eclection. After this he re-joined Brian Auger and recorded the album “Befour”. In the 70s Gary worked on albums with Mike Westbrook, Mike Gibbs, Soft Machine, Norma Winstone and Keith Tippett. Other highlights include a season at Ronnie Scotts with Amercian sax player Eddie Harris, four albums with Japanese percusionist Stomu Yamashta and an album with Bert Jansch.
