NEWS CONSIGNMENTS NOW BEING ACCEPTED FOR 2014 EQUINE ART AUCTION The American Saddlebred Museum is accepting consignments to be considered for inclusion in the 2014 Equine Art, Antique and Rare Book Auction. The auction will be held on Saturday July 12th at the Museum’s Showplace for Saddlebreds in conjunction with the Lexington Jr. League Horse Show. Deadline for submission of consignments is March 24, 2014. “The 2013 Auction saw prices rebound from prior years with very competitive bidding throughout the selection of items,” said Tolley Graves, auction coordinator. “2013 sales were 125% higher than in 2012, bringing total gross sales for all nine previous auctions to $1,474,123. Due to the demand for and popularity of George Ford Morris artwork, our auction will expand this year to include any sporting subject matter by Morris. His scope of work included, but was not limited to dogs, cattle, poultry and cats as well as advertising programs and posters.” The auction is open to artwork in any medium, by any artist, as well as rare books, unique equine antiques and historic artifacts. If you buy, sell, collect or create paintings, pastels, sculptures, charcoals, prints, carvings, etchings, antiques, rare books or historic artifacts, you’ll want to take note of this sales/marketing opportunity. The Museum publishes a four-color catalogue for this sale that is mailed to some 650 interested buyers. Each year the auction attracts artwork and buyers from a wide variety of equine interests and disciplines. In addition to Saddlebreds, coaching, Standardbred, Morgan, Draft, Hackney, Thoroughbred and hunting and jumping themes have become popular at the venue. Other items of interest are rare books, collectibles, equine-themed painted furniture, jewelry and historic artifacts and photographs. If you have any items you’d like to offer for sale, need more information or would like to receive a consignment contract, conditions of sale or an auction catalogue, please contact Tolley Graves at the Museum at 859-259-2746. The results of all past auctions can be viewed on the Museum’s website, www. asbmuseum.org.

YOU’RE INVITED TO ATTEND MUSEUM’S EXHIBIT OPENING! The Museum will be mounting a very special exhibit in 2014. Oak Hill Farm - A Jewel of the Bluegrass, will open on Friday, February 14, 2014 with a 6:30 PM dinner reception at the American Saddlebred Museum’s Showplace for Saddlebreds. The exhibit will encompass six decades of incomparable success produced by Jean McLean Davis’ Oak Hill Farm. Located in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, Oak Hill Farm has long been synonymous with world’s champion Saddlebreds and the tradition of excellence begun by owner Jean McLean Davis. Featured in the exhibit will be hundreds of items and artifacts donated by Davis’ estate. Included are trophies, ribbons, photographs, paintings, sculptures, and assorted memorabilia from Jean’s personal collection. Videos will play throughout the Museum with rarely seen photo footage of Jean and her horses from the 1940s through the early 1990s. You will not want to miss this once in a lifetime chance to learn more about the woman and the horses of the legendary Oak Hill Farm. Guests attending this year’s party will also have the chance to view the new American Saddlebred Museum Lifetime Achievement interactive exhibit. Sponsored by the Crabtree family and donors to the Museum’s 2012 Annual Campaign, the interactive touch screen exhibit features video footage, photos and biographies of people and horses that have made a significant impact in our breed’s history. In this opening installation, the lives of six important people and two horses are explored - made possible through donations made in their honor. Highlights of this Valentine’s night event include a dinner “dinearound” throughout the Museum, complimentary Leatherwood wines by Nic de Wet as well as a bourbon and whiskey tasting by Rod & Rifle. A cash bar will be available for other spirits. For those attending the ASHA Convention in Lexington, there will be complimentary shuttle buses running between the downtown Hilton Hotel and the Museum. Advance ticket purchase advised. To purchase tickets, go online to www.asbmuseum.org or call the Museum at 859-259-2746 ext. 305.

UPHA Chapter 5 Judges Announced Building on a great event in 2013, the UPHA Chapter 5 Horse Show will feature a three-judge panel for its May 7-10, 2014 show dates. James Nichols will judge the Saddlebred, Pony, and Equitation divisions. Tré Lee will preside over the Saddlebred and Equitation classes, and Tim Roesink will join as the Morgan judge, completing the panel for Saddlebreds and Equitation as well. Mr. Nichols has an extensive resume as a judge and as a horseman. Mr. Lee is one of the top young horsemen in the world with a multitude of World’s Championships over the past decade. Mr. Roesink is a highly accomplished horseman as well and is consistently one of the biggest winners every year at the Morgan Grand National and World Championship Horse Show. Page 36

The UPHA Chapter 5 Horse Show Committee is thrilled to have put together one of the most well-rounded panels to be found anywhere in the country! New for this year will be a Wednesday matinee session. This is being done to help lighten the class load for some of the evening performances. To prepare for this new session, horses will be allowed to move in on the Sunday prior to the horse show. With a party nearly every night and evening sessions designed to allow time before and after the session for fun with your horse show friends, the UPHA Chapter 5 Horse Show will be the social event of the spring! For more information, contact Show Manager Tuffy Owens at 602-579-3738 or davidwowens@hotmail.com. You may also contact Chapter Chair Robert Gardiner at 630-222-8599 or robertmgardiner@hotmail.com.
