SOUTH CAROLINA WALKING HORSE LADIES AUXILIARY CANCER BENEFIT HORSE SHOW A GREAT TIME IN CAROLINA
CLEMSON, SC - The South Carolina Ladies Auxiliary Cancer Benefit Horse Show was held April 11th and 12th, 2014, at the T. Ed Garrison Arena. The show was affiliated with Heart Of America HIO who did an excellent job keeping the show moving and thoroughly inspecting the horses. This was a huge start for the Carolinas and was one of the most enjoyable and exciting shows so far this season. Trainers, exhibitors, owners, and spectators came from all over the southeast to visit and to enjoy the wonderful and versatile Tennessee Walking Horse. The horses that entered the ring were free moving, head shaking, and exhibited great natural ability. It was hard to decide whether the horses were more talented in the open classes, the amateur classes, or the youth classes. This was a show full of outstanding horses. The three honorable judges were Alan Price, Danny Kistler and Lonnie Messick. Gene Frye did a great job announcing the show and his wife, Jane, entertained with her fabulous horse show organ. Perry Thompson fulfilled his ringmaster duties to a “T”; Ed McLeod did a super job with the in and out gates. Capturing all of the memorable moments with her camera was Sandra Hall, the official horse show photographer. The South Carolina Ladies Auxiliary made everyone feel welcome and kept the show moving in a timely, smooth manner. During the day, the exhibitors and trainers came to the show grounds to enjoy each other’s company and to focus on getting their horses ready for the Friday and Saturday night performances. These are times when people get a chance to visit and get to know each other better. Many new and enduring friendships were formed. Saturday night was the “pink out” night when pink is worn to draw attention to breast cancer and to honor its survivors and those who are currently fighting with this disease. All of the proceeds from this show benefit the American Cancer Society. The final class was called to the ring and leaving with the top honors was Black Jack Ritz with Tyler Baucom in the irons for owner, Buddy Stasney. Baucom Stables had a winning weekend claiming blues in open, amateur and youth classes. Reserve in this class went to Gary Martin aboard the Dr. Jim Gore entry, Rusty Wallace. This talented horse was presented by Martin Training Center, who also carried home many blue ribbons and championship titles. The SCOOP would like to congratulate the champions and all of those who participated at this outstanding show. Winning a first or second place at this show was a great honor. equine obituary - The cash collector 1992-2014 The Cash Collector was humanely laid to rest Friday, April 11th, 2014. He was owned for most of his show ring career by the Dickerson family of Fuquay Varina, North Carolina. Cash was purchased in 1998 for Amanda to show in the pony ranks under the direction of David Polk from Midland, North Carolina. In 2003, the decision was then made for Cash to be shown in the Park Pleasure division and the rest is history. Winning blues all over the East Coast, Cash captured wins at top shows such as The Celebration, The International, Asheville, and Clemson. The most memorable experience for Cash and Amanda came in 2007 when they were unanimously crowned the Amateur Owned and Trained Lite Shod World Champions. Amanda’s dream had finally come true. After an International Grand Championship in the Amateur Owned and Trained Park Pleasure division in 2008, Cash was retired. He was more than a horse, he was part of our family and will never be forgotten.

The Scoop For The Walking Horse Industry TWHBEA Supports Alexander, Isakson, McConnell, and Paul Legislation Lewisburg, TN - The Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ & Exhibitors’ Association (TWHBEA) fully supports new legislation pending in Washington, DC to institute objective, science-based inspections and reform the Tennessee Walking Horse industry. Congressman Marsha Blackburn (R, TN) is championing the walking horse breed in the House of Representatives along with all Tennessee republican congressmen. Yesterday, four senators from the states most affected by Tennessee Walking Horses, Senators Lamar Alexander (R, TN), Johnny Isakson (R, GA), Mitch McConnell (R, KY), and Rand Paul (R, KY) introduced a bill in the Senate complementary to Congressman Blackburn’s bill. “As the oldest, largest, and most influential walking horse association, we applaud Senators Alexander, Isakson, McConnell, and Paul for their efforts to eliminate the last remnants of soring through objective, scientificbased, and veterinarian approved inspections,” said TWHBEA executive director Tracy Boyd. TWHBEA, headquartered in Lewisburg, Tennessee, is the oldest and most prestigious organization devoted to the promotion of the breed. Founded in 1935, the breed registry was established to record the pedigrees of the Tennessee Walking Horse. Its goal is to maintain the purity of the breed, to promote greater awareness of the Tennessee Walking Horse and its qualities, to encourage expansion of the breed, and to help assure its general welfare. TWHBEA is hopeful that this legislation will be received positively in the House of Representatives and the Senate and gains widespread acceptance and passage. In the meantime, TWHBEA will help to incorporate the basic tenants of the legislation in the current self-regulatory environment. For further details or information, please contact (931) 359-1574 or (931) 359-1574.

S 1406 PAST ACT Passed S 1406 PAST Act was presented in Executive Session of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation on Wednesday April 9, 2014. It was passed by voice vote of the committee.
Tax Treatment of Casualty Losses Last fall a freak early snow storm killed thousands of livestock and horses in South Dakota. Ranchers suffered a tremendous monetary loss of prized livestock and horses. More recently in Kentucky, eight horses were killed in a fire, four of which were yearlings slated for the Keeneland September sale. Three of the four were uninsured. The financial impact of casualties is significant in that it wipes out potential sales income, and sets back breeding, racing and showing efforts, not to mention the personal trauma of the tragedy. Under Federal tax law, if you are engaged in a horse or livestock activity as a trade or business, a casualty loss is important to account for. Sometimes a major part of your breeding program can be interrupted by a casualty such as an aborted foal. When the IRS asks for an explanation of why there were several years of losses, sometimes the casualty issue needs to be clarified in detail. Sometimes if there are several casualties the IRS agent might get suspicious of insurance fraud, which requires further explanation. If there is no insurance, the amount claimed in the casualty might be substantial, and will require proof. In other cases, the IRS agent might need to be educated as to the economics of your venture and why the loss of an aborted foal, for example, can really throw a monkey wrench into your profit plans. Another kind of setback involves illness of owners, resulting in loss of time expended in the activity due to medical treatment and recuperation. While this does not result in a casualty loss as does the death of an animal, nonetheless it impacts one’s ability to carry forward business plans, and needs to be explained to the IRS if there is a history of losses. Under the Tax Code, a casualty loss deduction is available when property is damaged, destroyed or lost due to a sudden, unexpected, or unusual event. IRS Form 4684 (“Casualties and Thefts”) is submitted along with other tax forms. A sudden event is one that is swift, not gradual, such as a sudden storm, a racehorse casualty, a fire, flood, highway accident, or other misfortune. A loss of horses or livestock in a casualty is allowed only if the animals are part of a horse or ranching business. Livestock bought for resale are deductible, for example, but casualties affecting hobby horses are not. The amount of the casualty loss depends mainly on the cost basis of the animals in question. To compute a loss, the IRS will look to your adjusted basis in the animals minus any insurance or other reimbursement you receive or expect to receive. Generally, if a single casualty involves multiple animals, you must compute your loss separately for each animal, and then combine the losses to determine your total loss for tax purposes. If you receive insurance proceeds for the loss, but incurred legal expenses to collect that insurance, the legal costs are deducted from the amount of insurance reimbursement in calculating the amount to report. Losses of horses or livestock from disease are considered involuntary conversions. This is the case if you need to sell more than the usual number of livestock because of drought. The sale of animals above the normal volume is treated as an involuntary conversion. Involuntary conversions are reported on Form 4797 along with sales and exchanges of horses or livestock. There are complications and grey areas in determining the scope of a casualty loss or involuntary conversion, and therefore you should seek the advice of your tax professional regarding the application of these rules to insure accurate reporting on your tax return. Beyond The Ring
Elaina Fisher Introducing, a pretty new face to the Tennessee Walking Horse industry - Miss Elaina Fisher. This young girl already smells Championship Roses! She was born and lives in Panama City Beach, Florida. Elaina likes to have fun with friends and family doing what she loves most...horses! The nine year old daughter of Todd and Kristi Fisher attends Patronics Elementary School and is in the fourth grade where her favorite subjects are art and chorus. She is a big sister to Katy Marie. What got Elaina interested in the Tennessee Walking Horse was first and foremost that she has always loved animals, especially horses. However, watching her Daddy show walking horses inspired her to want to ride. She credits her father for teaching her how to ride. Thad and Erica Way are her two biggest influences in the show ring because they started riding when they were young. She thinks they are the greatest and she hopes one day she will be as good as they are. Thad is the son of Jack Way, who is Elaina’s trainer. She is very close to them. Jack Way is more like family than just her horse trainer. Elaina LOVES going to Tennessee because she gets to ride, but also gets to play with some of her best friends, Mary Frances and Caroline Wesley Way. Currently the Fisher’s own Elaina’s youth mount, Command At Sunrise, who they purchased in August of last year. Recently, the family acquired a new two year old colt, Designed By The King, affectionately called Kingdom. They are very excited for the future of this colt sired by Jazz King. When asked who was the first Tennessee Walking Horse you owned and how old were you, Elaina responded “Gracie”, a dappled grey field trial horse. Elaina says she was five years old when they got Gracie. T hey keep her at Sister Milligan’s barn. Elaina is very grateful for Sister’s friendship with her family and is thrilled that she can keep her horse there so that she can ride her whenever she wants! The Scoop / Page 59
Elaina Fisher
Elaina says she made many victory laps in the stick horse division, but her debut in the saddle was in Arab, Alabama, last year. This was her first REAL show. Not only was it her first real horse show, it was only the third or fourth time she had ridden Commander since they had bought him. She said she was very nervous, excited and scared all at the same time! However, the moment she got in the ring, she felt like she was floating, just her and her big buddy! The 2014 Mississippi Charity Horse Show in Jackson, Mississippi, was home for Elaina’s first show ring blue! She made her first of many future victory laps aboard Command At Sunrise in the 11 & Under Youth Championship class! Elaina is still beaming from the excitement of her debut blue and looks forward to her next show ring appearance! Spending time with her best friend, Command At Sunrise, is her favorite thing about horse shows! This young lady loves everything horsey. She adores showing them, riding them at the barn, and riding them in the woods. She has something she looks forward to each year that requires horseback riding and that’s riding in the Mardi Gras Parade with Sister Milligan. The shows Elaina look forward to most are The Celebration and The Gulf Coast Charity Horse Show. The Panama City show is amazing to her because all her friends from her hometown get to experience her passion. During the day, Elaina gets to ride and see some other great horses. Sometimes, she and her friends even sell lemonade while others are enjoying their morning rides! Then, in the evening, she sings with her school chorus for the opening of the Saturday night performance, show her horse, and stay up late and dance with the bands! What more could a girl ask for?!?!

Elaina Fisher
When Elaina isn’t in Tennessee practicing or attending a horse show, she enjoys cheerleading, chorus, tumbling, boating, surfing and playing outside with her sister and friends. The family even has taken trips that involve horses to appease Elaina! The family vacationed in Costa Rica where they rode horses in the country all the way up to a waterfall. They also enjoy visiting her father’s hometown of Asheville, North Carolina. They ride at Chunn’s Cove Stables and Pisgah National Forest. The best advice she has ever received in or out of the show ring is , “take time to smell the roses”. This new young face to the show ring has already experienced the thrill of victory and enjoying smelling her championship roses. Win or lose, Elaina loves showing horses and spending time with family and friends! Please cheer this little cutie on next time she makes her show ring appearance with her big mount, Command At Sunrise, doing what she loves most...horses!

O D G H A H S The Old Dominion Gaited Horse Association hosted its 6th Annual Horse Show on April 4th and 5th at the beautiful Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, VA. This multi-breed event was affiliated with WHOA and included 108 classes for Tennessee Walkers, Spotted Saddle Horses, Racking Horses and Mountain Horses. The Honorable Bill Garvey judged the event. Alice Martens served as Show Secretary with her son Aaron Martens as Ring Master. Bob Kleinfelter did a great job announcing the show as did Lynn Delzingaro as the show manager. ODGHA hosted a silent auction during the show. As well as a wine and cheese party after the show Friday night. A big thank you to Anne McFarland for putting this social together. ODGHA would like to congratulate all the winners. VRDR TRAIL OBSTACLE THEY CALL ME THE BREEZE Carey Jones
