The Scoop For The Walking Horse Industry equine obituary - Gold Coin Cash Gold Coin Cash, known to those who loved him as “Buster”, was laid to rest at Ballentine Farms on 06/30/2014. Buster was born Oct 30, 1990.Several years later he was purchased by the Jones family and trained by J&H Stables, where Brent Jones rode him to the1995 Walking Pony 12-14 World Championship, 1996 World and World Grand Championship honors in the Pony division and reserve honors in 1997. In May 1999 with the help of J&H Stables and Baucom Stables Buster was purchased by the Joel Davis Family of Graham NC where he quickly became a family member. A few short months later while being trained by Baucom Stables, Ashley Davis and Buster were crowned 1999 World Champion 12-14 Ponies. Buster remained in training with Chad and Baucom Stables for years where Buster, Ashley and Lauren had several more notable wins including Pony and 15.2 wins at the SC State Championship show. Buster then went to TN with Sam McLaughlin who also won several honors with Buster, Ashley, Lauren and Jordan Davis which included pony wins at the SC State Championship show. Around 2004, The Davis Family brought Buster home with the plans of retiring him, but Buster had other plans! After about 6 months Craig and Barry Baggerly talked the family into bringing Buster to Magic Oak stables and trying him Park Performance. After 6 days on these shoes and not being ridden in 6 months Craig entered the show ring in Dallas NC, he and Buster came out with the Blue in a class of 12! For the next several years Craig and Page Davis Brown directed Buster to victories everywhere they went. In 2005 he won the NC Championship show in the AmateurPark Performance with Page and the Open Park Performance with Craig. Also in 2005 Craig was crowned Reserve World Champion in the Park PerformanceOpen division and Page received 3rd in the amateur division. After a few years, Buster was taken to Ballentine Farms with Caroline and Nancy Elliott, with the plan to baby him and let him live his life out in retirement, but again Buster didn’t want that. For the past several years, Caroline

and Page took Buster to shows where he allowed them to look like they knew what they were doing. The 1st show after Caroline had Buster was the 2009 Lenoir show where Caroline and Buster placed 1st. Followed by The NC State Fair where Page won the Amateur Park Performance and Caroline won the Open Park Performance. This was just the beginning of multiple wins over the next several years including a win at the SC State Championship show in 2010! In total, Buster won 8 world, world grand or reserve world championships, multiple state championships and uncountable blue ribbons! Buster was such a sweet loving horse. He loved everyone he met and they loved him in return. He took many of us on our 1st ride, and you can believe he would give 110% every time someone threw a leg over his back. It didn’t matter if it was at the barn or in the ring! He gave everyone around him so much joy with his quirky ways, we often called him our high maintenance pony. The stories about him are never ending and will keep us laughing for years to come. Our wonderful memories will help ease the loss of a family member. Knowing Buster got to spend his last several years with his best friend and partner in crime, Caroline Elliott makes it all better. From the bottom of our hearts we would like to thank everyone who had a part in his life and his career as well as his many fans. Most pets are in your life, but Buster made our lives! He will forever be in our hearts and minds as our once in a lifetime horse! We could not have asked for a better match for our family! Thank you Buster for the wonderful memories; the awesome victory passes and for always taking care of us both in and out of the ring. You were a little horse with a heart of gold! It was an honor to know and love you; you will be in our hearts forever! Joel, Tonya, Page, Lauren, Ashley and Jordan

The Scoop For The Walking Horse Industry THE THRILL OF THE RIDE I bought my first Tennessee Walking Horse by accident. I am a goal setter – even in college I wrote out short and long term goals. One that stuck was to purchase a horse when I got in practice. I had a patient and friend who owned the grocery store in a small town in northern Kentucky. He had several horses - two Saddlebred geldings and a Tennessee Walking Horse mare. I was invited on a ride with him and fell in love with the smooth ride provided by this mare. I begged him to sell her to me that day even though I had no place to keep her. He did, and I still think of many enjoyable days riding along those picturesque Ohio River trails in Warsaw, Kentucky. Next, there was a patient who took me to my first horse show to see their horse exhibit. As I walked around the show grounds, met their trainer and looked at all the beautiful stock, I could hardly contain myself. Later sitting in the stands watching the classes it came to me that I could ride in one of those classes. It would be several years before I went to my first Celebration and saw the greatest horse show on the planet, but I was hooked. Yes, it was my first show when I first saw a class of Tennessee Walking Horses strut around a little ring that a place in my heart filled up. I remember reading an article about the late Mr. Hamilton. He related that when he rode Ebony’s Princess it was like “a little bit of heaven”. It would be much later I could say the same thing about my ride. I was eager to ride a show horse so the next week I went up to Union to see Mose Oppenheimer at the Forest Margrave Stables. During that 30 mile trip I kept saying to myself not to buy another horse. Mose sold me my first show hoss that day! I went up to Union to ride all the time, then I traded for a better mount. “White Music” a solid white gelding by Midnight Sun. He had black eyes and I thought he was “real pretty”. I guess everyone wants a white hoss in the beginning. I tell people that “Music” is the reason Mary Ann went out with me. She was in college at Eastern Kentucky when I met her and asked if she ever came home on the weekends, she said “no”! Then I told her I had a horse. She did consent to a date if she got to ride the horse. Later I found out she had wanted a pony all her life. On that sunny fall day when she took “Music” around the ring, I think that secret place in her heart also filled up. We are still riding together after 46 years! There were no riding coach’s in those days, you just climbed up there and off you went. I rode all slumped over like Mose and the faster I went in the running walk the bigger the thrill. Most of the time I ran my hoss off his feet, and tied down, but I was having lots of fun! I knew from my first lab in Chiropractic College how important correct posture was, but I thought that poor riding posture was just how you had to ride a TWH. It would be three more years before we went to our first Celebration. We rented the upstairs of someone’s home in Shelbyville and when they did not have the baby crib they promised, our infant daughter (she has the hoss gene too), slept in the bottom draw of the dresser next to our bed. I remember sitting in the West grandstand hypnotized watching class after class while the greatest riders and horses in the world passed in front of me. Right away I picked out my favorite rider – Mr. Vic Thompson. He sat up so straight and never moved. His hands and arms were level with his chin slightly tilted up. He looked like the horse was riding him instead of him riding the horse. I started to think more about my posture and how the disks between the vertebra would be better served if I sat up straight. No one ever said “sit up straight Morgan” until I met Jimmy Carnathan in Tupelo, MS. Jimmy taught all of us (and our three kids) to ride and show. He tried to teach me to “feel” the square gait with my rear end. I never quite knew what he was saying. In fact, it took me twenty years of riding to really know what he was talking about. Jimmy was always fussing at me for going too fast. I wanted to be like Joe Webb and Carbon Copy and go around the ring 90 miles an hour like the barn was burning down! But only Carbon Copy could do that! Two things Jimmy never let up on – sit up straight and never come out of the show ring unless you are excused. I had no trouble with the second thing, as I always thought my class went by too fast. But, I had all night after the show to re ride my class in my head and dreams. I still do that pretty much. It was not until we moved to Georgia that it finally came to me that I could sit still and feel the gaits - my saddle seat had finally arrived. I still kept studying and picking out my favorite riders all along and settled on Ed Breedlove – my hero. Ed never rushed (still my big mistake) his mount and he never moved in the saddle. He always seemed to know where he was in the ring and saved the best of his horse for the judge’s viewing until last. Jimmy used to say I showed my best behind the judge! Even today I study good riders and what it takes to be a good showman. For twenty years I had to hear all our friends tell me I needed to get our daughter Amy to teach

Page 20 / The Scoop

me how to ride. She had perfect balance, but mine came from years of practice and determination. I got my chance to ride in the Celebration and it took 40 years to reach my goal of winning a World Championship. Trouble on The Line was born right outside our kitchen window on Morgan Hill Farm. We got to watch him grow and develop every step of his career. It would be awhile before Gary Edwards would let me climb up on his back because of his “454 motor”. But I was getting better with my “seat” and anxious to ride. Gary taught me how to really show my horse. I know these Edwards have had a lot of riders come through their program but I bet they never had one that got as excited to ride as I do. So young riders – sit up straight, it not only helps develop healthy spines, it looks so much better to the fans. Find you a good riding coach – we have some good ones – and don’t get discouraged. Remember rule number one: make as many hoss friends as you can, and don’t let the judges determine your happiness. In the show ring, try to derive your fun and pleasure by grading your own ride. Lastly, remember to exercise and stay in shape to ride, study other riders, set your goals and try and have as much fun riding as possible. See ya at the hoss show! Dr. Tom Morgan

Protocol at Germantown WHOA Press Release WHOA Forms Emergency Hoof Band Protocol at Germantown The Germantown Charity Horse Show, one of the oldest and largest multi-breed events of the summer show season, brings together many of America’s foremost breeds in a weeklong celebration each June. This year, the USEF sanctioned, and WHOA affiliated event was deluged with record amounts of rainfall. On Friday morning, June 7, Mark Farrar, Germantown Show Manager, reached out to WHOA and the WHOA HIO for temporary relief from the no bands rule. He cited the fact that even though the Germantown show ring is one of the best all weather and all breed facilities in the nation, extreme rainfall had necessitated that exhibitors of every discipline make changes to accommodate the compromised arena footing. At that point, a one time exception to the hoof band rule was formed, along with an emergency protocol to accommodate Mr. Farrar’s request. Those exhibitors desiring to use hoof bands were restricted to the use of the official show farrier to attach the hoof bands under the oversight of the WHOA DQP Terry Martin. Other show officials were invited to oversee that process as well. During pre- and post show inspections, Terry Martin reaffirmed that the bands were correctly placed and used appropriately. WHOA is happy to report that there were no HPA violations at this show. “We feel that being included in the Germantown Charity Show is a great honor and opportunity to showcase the Tennessee Walking Horse in a multi-breed event,” stated WHOA President Dee Dee Miller Sale. “We appreciate the fact that the owners, trainers, and show management worked together to exhibit our horses with the other breeds and horse enthusiasts. A special thank you to everyone who took their Tennessee Walking Horses to compete at Germantown.”

TWHBEA Partners with BluePrint Marketing LLC to Produce Voice Magazine LEWISBURG, Tenn. – The Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ and Exhibitors’ Association (TWHBEA) announces that as of June 1, 2014, its Voice Magazine will be produced by BluePrint Marketing, LLC. As the official breed journal of the Tennessee Walking Horse, the Voice Magazine will continue to be the property of TWHBEA, but production will be outsourced to the Colorado-based company. “BluePrint Marketing has a long and successful track-record of producing high quality publications for agriculture-based, non-profit associations,” said TWHBEA Executive Director Tracy Boyd. “They have a tremendous reputation among their clients and we look forward to working with their talented, professional and experienced staff to produce the best possible magazine for our members.” Long-time Voice employee Paulette Ewing will remain at TWHBEA and serve as the staff liaison to BluePrint. Jane Moore and Carol Wakefield will continue to serve our customers’ advertising needs, and writer Sarah Gee will join the BluePrint team to supply editorial content.

CARTHAGE, TN-The South Carthage Civitan Club hosted the 50th Annual Smith County Horse Show Friday, June 20, 2014 at the Smith County Agriculture Center in Carthage, TN. The Honorable Paul Robbins judged the 28 class event. The club’s most outstanding project is its annual $500 and $1,000 college scholarships awarded to Smith County students, but they also work hard to raise money that they can contribute to organizations such as Little League Baseball, Girls Softball, Carthage and Gordonsville bands and other charitable organizations. The Master of Ceremonies for the event was Victor Gernt, of Allardt, Tennessee. The individual appointed to manage the show ring as ringmaster was Jim Broyles of Carthage, TN. Others that played an important role in making this show a success were Show Chairman Mike Lee of Carthage, TN, organist Wayne Nabors and treasurer Dewayne Wilmore. These fine gentlemen kept the show running smoothly throughout the evening. House Call At The Ritz and Todd Claborn made the gate call to compete in the Championship Stake class. There were no other entries in the class. House Call At The Ritz is owned by Doug and Pam Hunt. The Park Performance Specialty class had five entries, but it was The British Open who dominated the class with Travis Craft aboard for owner Jim Woodburn. The Amateur Ladies Open Specialty class had three entries who all battled it out for the blue and in the end it was Show Boat Chaparral with Betty Mosley who won this class. Another proud owner at the show was Charles and Betty Mosley as they watched Todd Smith guide Dancing For A Dollar in the Two Year Old Mares/Geldings Riders’ Cup to the blue. ` Congratulations to the winners of the Smith County Horse Show! NEWS

The Scoop For The Walking Horse Industry WHOA Response to Germantown Show An email was sent to the WHOA office today June 10, 2014 regarding the Germantown horse show. Below you will find the email received and a response from WHOA President Dee Dee Miller Sale. Dear WHOA, I can’t express to you how disappointed I was to learn that the Germantown show went against WHOA rules and allowed bands on flat shod horses at their show. What is the point of making rules if a show can just decide to disregard them? This is not fair to all other exhibitors throughout the year that show and follow the rules, no matter how bad the ring might be. Any points earned at this show should not be allowed as the show did not follow the rules set forth by WHOA. I would like to know what you intend to do about this situation. Also, last year I complained about the fact that I would have to pay for a subscription to Walking Horse Report in order to view my standings. I have no desire to support Walking Horse Report. I was told this was being changed but it has not. Can you please tell me why this is set up this way? If I pay for my WHOA membership, I should be able to view my standings for free. Looking forward to your thoughts on these two matters. Response from WHOA President Dee Dee Miller Sale: Thank you for your email to the WHOA office this morning. First, let me say that I appreciate hearing from you, and take your concerns seriously. I understand your anguish on the Germantown matter, and please understand that the decision we made was not made in haste or without a lot of discussion. I am enclosing a copy of the press release that will be issued today in this regard, however, I would like to share my thoughts on the decision with you as well. First, let me say that I fully support the new WHOA rules. I helped create them, I lobbied the BOD to support them, and I’m proud that WHOA can be seen as leader in doing what is right for the breed. Now, let me also say that there is always an exception to every rule. That being said, let me also state that there have been few, if any, shoes thrown at WHOA shows this year that I’m aware of under the new rules. This situation was unique, and there were pros and cons on each side, and believe me, we discussed them thoroughly in making the decision! All the TWH exhibitors came to Germantown with the expectation of showing their horses under the current WHOA rules. And they did just that on Wednesday and Thursday nights. While they all expected rain during the show and were prepared to continue showing under the rules, nobody could have predicted the extreme weather that occurred. On Friday morning, Show Manager Mark Farrar reached out to me to request an exception on the band rule for the TWH exhibitors. He explained the situation and described what other breeds and disciplines were doing to circumvent the problems. Remember that the USEF was present and presided over those breeds, all of which were making adjustments in their shoeing/footing strategies with the addition of hoof bands, calks, clips, and studs. Mr. Farrar reported that TWH exhibitors had lost two shoes on Thursday night, and several had been lost in pre-show preparation on Friday morning as the rain continued. Mr. Farrar worked with myself and a small group which also included input from a WHOA Board member who was on the grounds and a representative of the WHOA HIO. We discussed many factors, and the WHOA rules were foremost. We felt it was important to keep the TWH at the show and in the ring. As you are aware, in past years the TWH has taken heat at Germantown for the padded performance horse. Last year, the TWH was invited back to show as a sound, flat shod show horse. We felt this was a huge opportunity for the breed and were excited to show our horse in a multi-breed setting and to give those who had written the breed off another opportunity to see our horse in a new and better light. The last thing we wanted was to have the TWH not participate on the final two nights of the show and again become blacklisted from this event and the possibility of not being included in this and other breed shows in the future. To have had Championship Classes with no entries would have been disastrous for the progress we are trying to make for the sound and natural TWH. So, the group developed a protocol to allow those exhibitors who wanted to continue showing their horses a strict and very regulated way to compete. First, let me say that NO HORSE came on the grounds wearing hoof bands. The hoof bands were attached by the official show farrier (not a TWH breed specific farrier) prior to the beginning of the show. This was overseen by other show officials and WHOA DQP Terry Martin. Mr. Martin also reaffirmed that the bands were correctly placed and used appropriately during pre- and post show inspections. There were no HPA violations at this show, before or after the band protocol was in place. Please know that we did our best to follow the WHOA rules and mission statement. I hear a lot of our members talking about how we market our horse to the outside world and how important it is to exhibit at multi-breed shows. This week, we were blessed with the opportunity to be included in an important multi-breed event, but cursed with events beyond our control. We made a decision that was controversial, however used restrictions and controls to maintain a fair playing field while keeping the welfare of the horse our highest priority. Now....on to your second issue. I was not aware of this problem, but completely agree and validate your frustration regarding the high point standings. I have spoken with

Tommy Hall this morning on a possible remedy to this situation. He and I will follow up on this to make these standings available to our members through the WHOA website. As you know, we are currently working on updating/overhauling our website, and I will work to make your concerns a reality in the near future. I’ll follow up with an email to you as the process gets rolling. Apologies for this lengthy email, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly in the future. Thank you! Dee Dee Miller Sale

18 Years Of Dedication In The Walking Horse Industry And Looking Forward To 18 More… Jennifer Brown Lee

Jennifer Brown Lee, age 35 is the daughter of Fred and Dianne Brown. She grew up and currently lives in Covington, Virginia with her husband, Forrest. Jennifer attended the Alleghany High School then went to Lincoln Memorial University and received an Associate degree in Veterinary Technology and Bachelor degree in Veterinary Science. She is the owner of Pampered Pets, Inc., a grooming, boarding and retail pet supply business Jennifer doesn’t normally take vacations other than ones associated with horses. Their vacations are the horse shows, due to most of them being eight hours from home. They also trail ride and have recently got into ranch sorting. Once a year they take a weekend trip to Chattanooga and crappie fish with her husband, Forrest’s family. The hobbies they do other than horses are owning a farm “Leeland Farm” where they raise Myotonic (fainting) goats. They also raise around 150 chickens and market free range chicken eggs. Their eggs are sold locally in supermarkets and in a high end resort. They also raise chickens and turkeys for meat consumption along with maintaining a vegetable garden that provides up enough food for an entire year. When not on the rails Jennifer can be caught on the trails. Forrest is the President and Jennifer is the Vice President of a local trail riding club called the Bordernier Riding Club. They are instrumental in planning club rides, having informational speakers at their meetings, putting together an all-breed horse show and host the Christmas Party at their house with a live band in their very own living room. Jennifer got involved in horses through her Grandfather because he always had horses on his farm and she was around them from the time she was born. Jennifer actually rode in the local labor day parade with her mother when she was 11 months old. They trail rode extensively and they attended and participated in local all-breed shows. The more Page 96 / The Scoop

she showed the more she wanted a registered show horse. When she was 15 her parents knew a man that had several for sale. Cecil Hinkle was the “go to” guy in their community for registered Walking Horses. So one day the family went there to look. He had several to choose from and Jennifer had a blast riding all the different horses. She quotes, “she was in horse heaven.” They spent most of the day there as he would get them out of the stalls one by one for her to ride. There was this little black gelding that caught her eye, but Cecil wasn’t sure if he was the right fit for her because he was “a little spunky” in his words. And of course he was the one she wanted. Jennifer still remem-

Walking Horses about an hour from college. Her parents bought Jennifer a Plantation Pleasure horse from him and kept it in training. When she got home sick or just needed a friend, she would go to Paul’s and ride. Paul, his mother and father took her under their wing and treated Jennifer as a part of their family. After she had been exposed to the padded horses for the first time, of course she got the bug and wanted one! So again after begging and pleading with her parents, they bought her one. After she graduated college and moved back home we moved our horses to Steve Hankins Stables due to it being only two hours from home.

ber that day her dad saying “now if I buy you this horse you are not going to start running around with the boys or when you get your license in a couple months start running the roads and forget about it, are you? “ Her answer to him was “of course not”! Jennifer and her new mount “Doby” competed in Country Pleasure classes, winning numerous local shows and the West Virginia State Fair. She was in 4-H at the time and won on state levels, carried the flag at the Virginia State Fair in Richmond and even qualified to compete at the Regional 4-H Show in Baton Rouge, Louisiana against kids from 14 states. She won first in Showmanship and reserve in Country Pleasure.

The closest show to home is the Tazewell County Classic and Jennifer always look forward to showing there. They consider that their hometown show. One year, in 2001 when they had Prides Gold Millennium in training with Paul Livingston, he called Jennifer a couple days before the show and asked if it would be okay if he didn’t come to that particular show. Jennifer answered with “sure, if you will take me to Wartrace”. She had always for some reason wanted to show there. Paul took Jennifer to Wartrace where she won! That was her first win in Middle Tennessee on a very special horse. To this day, she still watches the video tape of the show they had made together. What Jennifer likes most about showing horses is the memorable time she gets to spend with her fam-

It was time for Jennifer to go to college and she selected Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee. It was five hours from home and she knew no one. Mr. Hinkle introduced her to Paul Livingston who trained

Jennifer Brown Lee ily. Her parents go to all the shows and support her unconditionally. Her dad says , “he is just the truck driver.” She also loves the competition and spending time with her horse show family. The family has met many people in the Walking Horse Industry and feels as though most are a part of the family. Of course the Celebration is the show that she looks forward to the most due to being able to ride I’m Steely Dan (Dan) and Late Night Caller (Caller). It gives them time away from the daily grind of life and a chance to see great horses compete, meet new people and catch up on the times with old friends. Currently the family owns I’m Steely Dan a top Four Year old Amateur Mare and Gelding contender. This horse won the Reserve World Championship in the Open ranks, in 2013. Jennifer and I’m Steely Dan have had a great show season claiming blues all over including wins at

Jennifer Brown Lee Trainers Show, Fun Show, and Gulf Coast Charity Horse Show in Panama City Beach Florida. Late Night Caller is an Amateur Park Performance contender. These horses are both trained by Charlie Green Stables in Shelbyville, TN. Jennifer doesn’t have one single person as her biggest influence in the show ring. It started with her Grandfather and on to her Mother teaching her to ride and the love and respect of horses. Paul Livingston and Steve Hankins were both instrumental in teaching her how to ride padded horses. Make sure to cheer Jennifer Brown Lee on when you see her hit the ring this year. She will be vying for World Championship honors in the Amateur Four Year Old Mares & Geldings divisions with I’m Steely Dan and Amateur Park Performance Championship honors with Late Night Caller. For the past 18 years Jennifer along with her family have been dedicated to showing the Tennessee Walking horse and will be equally dedicated in the years to come.
