LEWISBURG, TN- The weekend of November 30th and December 1st proved to be a busy weekend for the staff of the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ and Exhibitors’ Association. TWHBEA officials kicked off the weekend with their annual general membership meeting at the TWHBEA headquarters in Lewisburg. President David Williams opened and resided over the meeting with approximately 40 members attending. Rory Williams, TWHBEA Executive Director, made a very positive announcement that both registrations and transfers were up over the preceding year. He also stated that there were 258 more mares bred than last year and that was the highest since 2015. Others making presentations were Nancy Lynne Greene- admin/financial report, Carrie Benedict- breeders’ report, Robin Webb- bylaws report, Keegan Meadows- owners/exhibitors/international report, Ashley Wadsworth- gift shop/marketing report, Allison Thorson- youth report, Russ Thompson- trainers’ report, Bobby Beech- equine welfare report. On Friday evening, TWHBEA held its annual awards banquet. Before the awards were handed out, TWHBEA recognized the 2018 Tennessee Walking Horse Youth Association officers: President- Kyle Majors, Vice President- Svanah Martin, Secretary- Mei Li S Straka, Parliamentarian- Morgan Norris and Treasurer- Adam Hopper. Saturday morning entered another round of committee reports and meetings which resulted in a ballot vote for two contested executive committee positions. Walking Horse trainer Jerry Williams and Melanie Record were married on Monday, December 10th at Sand Creek Farm in Shelbyville, Tennessee. Family and friends came together, witnessing the vows. The Dickie Gardner Stables held their annual Barn Party on Saturday night, Scoop congratulates the newlyweds. December 8th at 6:00pm. The cold weather didn’t keep the crowd from joining in on the fun. The heaters kept everyone warm inside. The food was catered and a great BBQ meal was enjoyed by all. Dickie Gardner and Chrystal Deputy do an amazing job with both Tennessee Walking and Spotted Saddle Horses. A good time is always had with this fun group!

The stage was beautifully decorated for the recent Walking Horse Trainers’ Awards Banquet with a golden “50” and a horseshoe made of magnolia. This year the WHTA celebrated 50 years of being an organization. Congratulations to the organization for hosting a successful banquet concluding the 2018 show season.

OBITUARY- ROBERT LEE “BOB” NEAL Bob Neal passed away on November 27th at the V.A. Alvin C. York Medical Center following an extended illness. He was 74 years old. A Celebration of Life Service was held on Saturday, December 15th at Doak-Howell Funeral Home in Shelbyville. Bob was a Tennessee Walking Horse breeder and exhibitor for many years. A special flag ceremony closed the Memorial Service. The Scoop sends our condolences to the Neal Family.
OBITUARY- WILLIAM “BILLY” HALE, SR. William “Billy” K. Hale, Sr., age 85, passed away Tuesday, December 11, 2018 in Avon Park, FL after a long term illness. Visitation was held at Family Heritage Funeral Home in Gallatin, TN on Saturday, December 15th and Sunday, December 16th until time of service. Interment followed at Crestview Memory Gardens. Mr. Hale was born March 22, 1933 in Baxter, TN to the late Rev John L Hale, Sr. and Iva Hale. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in Ms. Louise Samford (Mickey) Groom of Opelika passed away at UAB death by his first wife, Willie Lois Hale and second wife, Mary Fitzpatrick Hale; daughters, Rosiland Stephanie Hale and Trina Dawn Hale; son, Rodney Craig University Hospital November 26, 2018. Funeral service for Ms. Groom was held November 30, 2018 at First United Hale; brothers Glen Hale, Jack Hale, and Herman Hale; and sister Eva Haas. Methodist Church of Opelika. Interment followed at Rosemere Cemetery. He is survived by his son, Kenny (Anne) Hale of Avon Park, FL; Ms. Groom was born November 24, 1933 in Atlanta, Georgia to parents, Dr. Millard and Gwendolyn Samford. She owned and operated Oak Bowery Farms daughter Martha (David) Harvey of Franklin, TN; brother J. L. (Susie) Hale, Jr in Opelika, AL and was a retired teacher from the Opelika School District. In of Gallatin, TN; sister Irene Moody of Lebanon, TN; two grandchildren, William 1985, she won the Ladies Amateur World Grand Championship on her horse, (Kendra) Hale, III of Winchester, TN and Mary Elizabeth Harvey of Franklin, TN; Powerful Threat. She recently received the Walking Horse Lady Rider of the and many other extended family members that he loved deeply. Year award.
