NCWHA President, Robert Deutsch and Terrie Moseley hosted a wonderful Banquet.
On the Loose and Armed received the High Point Award in the Country Pleasure Division for owners Gary and Carolyn Pope.
Joe Manis won Senior Horse Person of the Year at the NCWHA Awards Banquet.
NCWHA HIGH POINT AWARDS BANQUET “Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina” Ashboro, NC-The North Carolina Walking Horse Association Annual Awards Banquet was held Saturday, January 24th 2015 at the Pinewood Country Club. The event moved locations this year, being at its normal spot in Greensboro. The move was received with open arms, and attendance was up from last year. Many people made the drive to enjoy the good food, friendly faces and dancing to end the night. Many of the Association’s members from East Tennessee, Virginia and South Carolina were welcomed. The membership of the NCWHA votes for the Junior and Senior Horseperson Awards each year. One of the pleasures of watching our young people show is the opportunity to watch them develop and improve in their horsemanship skills. This year the Junior Horseperson honoree is a young individual who always has a smile on her face and truly enjoys showing horses. She can be found showing in both the pleasure and performance horse division. She has come a long way since she first began showing when a smile was the last thing on her mind as she made her way to the show ring. She will be missed for her catch rides in the youth pleasure division as she captured divisions for their respective owners this year. As she exits this division, our Junior Horseperson Award for 2014 is presented to Kayla Baucom. This year’s Senior Horseperson is not new to any of you, but in my opinion, he can never be honored enough. Often in the background, but always a fierce competitor when entering the ring, this individual has been attending horse shows for many years. He, too, always has a smile on his face and enjoys having his family participate in the industry with him. He always give others credit for their contributions and rarely takes credit for his own. He is a true sportsman and a real try gentleman in anyone’s definition of the words. It is my pleasure to present the 2014 Senior Horseperson award to Mr. Joe Manis. Page 10 / The Scoop
The NCWHA is fortunate to have a number of individuals who contribute time and financial support to continue the promotion of the Tennessee Walking Horse. The ability to continue the activities that have become established as the forte of this association depend upon support from the membership and corporate sponsors. The association received tremendous financial support for the past 20 years from Buddy Stasney and Stasney’s Buick, GMC Truck in Lincolnton. Without the support of this corporate sponsor, the championship show could not have become one of the premier fall events for our breed. At this time, we would like to recognize Buddy Stasney and Stasney’s Buick, GMC Truck in Lincolnton. The membership also votes for the Best One-Night and Best Multi-Night Horse Shows of the Year. This year the best One Night Show is a past winner of the award. The NCWHA has always excluded the shows put on by the Board of Directors from this voting category and there are many quality one night shows. This year the winner is a four time winner. Put on by a very small group of ladies and the gentlemen they can coerce to help them, and who together work very hard to promote the Tennessee Walking Horse, The Best One-Night Horse Show for 2014 is the NC Ladies Auxiliary Show. The best Multi-Night Show award goes to a group of individuals who work very hard to put on a quality show. Faced with adversity from government regulations and inspections that have resulted in limited participation in the past, they have continued to offer a quality class sheet with quality prize money. For the 2nd year in a row, the Best Multi-Night Show goes to the SC Ladies Auxiliary Horse Show. The NCWHA added to their Horse of the Year awards this year to include some additional pleasure divisions. They gave Horse Of the Year awards for Country Pleasure, Park, Lite Shod, Lite Shod with no tungsten allowed, Trail Pleasure and Performance Pleasure Horse Of the Year.
NCWHA HIGH POINT AWARDS BANQUET This year the results for Performance Horse of the Year were extremely close in the top 3 with only a 20 point difference from 3rd to 1st and a one point difference in first and second. The top ten horses in this division where we had 152 horses eligible were: Jose’s Delightful Pusher won the division. The pleasure division has undergone significant shoeing changes and depending upon the HIO rulebook, the shoeing requirements can be different at each show. The Plantation division didn’t have a great number of classes this year, but the horses that showed in this division contributed to the overall success of our shows. The winner of this division was Gen’s Double Action. In this division, only the highest 3 division totals are counted for each horse in order to give all exhibitors an opportunity to compete for the award. Only 7 points separated 1st and 2nd in this division. We had 21 horses participating in this division. A Dream was the winner in this competitive division. Lite Shod Horse of the Year – no tungsten. The top 3 point total divisions count in this award for each horse. The totals in this division will indicate to you how extensive the participation in this division is as we had 18 horses competing in this division and only 4 points separated 1st from 2nd. Jose Loco won this division with 372 points. In the Country Pleasure division, the middle of the field was close, but the winner was not. On The Loose And Armed owned by the Popes won this division. This year, North Carolina had 16 horses competing in this division. Many of these horses showed multiple times at a single show. The significant point totals earned by the top placing will indicate how many times this exhibitor entered the ring. Princess Power owned by Terri Smith topped this division. Performance Pleasure Horse of the Year winner was Rocky Marciano. This division had fewer participants in past year, but strong performances by the top 5 horses. These horses showed a significant number of times and contributed to the performance numbers at our shows.
These Celebration World Champion winners were honored as the ceremony began.
Tyler Baucom won Trainer Of The Year for the North Carolina Association. This is his second year in a row to win this prestigious award.
Trainer of the Year award is voted on selected by The membership. It has always been a privilege to be able to present the Trainer of the Year award each year. This year’s winner is no stranger to the winner’s circle or recognitions and this will not be a new experience for him. He has truly grown up in the horse business and is following in the family tradition of success. This year, not only did he contribute to the winning of several categories tonight, but horse trained by his barn won 10 world or reserve world championships. The 2014 NCWHA Trainer of the Year award to Tyler Baucom. The Kenny Price Memorial Sportsmanship Award was established by Ed and Dorothy Hubbard in 1981 to honor Mr. Kenny Price. The awarding of the trophy for 2001 retired the Kenny Price Memorial Sportsmanship Award. After his passing, the Sportsmanship Award was named for one of the founding members of the NCWHA, Edwin A. Hubbard. This year’s recipient of the Edwin A. Hubbard Sportsmanship award is being presented to one of the young people in our industry. This individual has had many successes in the show ring in both the performance and pleasure divisions and is always smiling. I think she got her sweet disposition from her grandfathers. The North Carolina association presented the 2014 Edwin A. Hubbard Memorial Sportsmanship award to Kayla Baucom.

Shirley Boger won the Johnny Dysart Award at the 2014 Awards Banquet. The Johnny Dysart Award was established to honor an individual member who contributes to the overall operation of the organization on a regular basis or who exemplifies the characteristics that were important to Johnny Dysart. This year, the walking horse industry has continued to face many significant challenges and issues. Some individuals have given a great deal of time, sweat, and love to this association over the years. Not many individuals will give of themselves to a group cause for more than 25 years. She has served as treasurer of this association since 1987. The 2014 Johnny Dysart Award winner is Mrs. Shirley Boger.
Daphne France and A Dream won the Park Pleasure Western High Point Award, owned by Clyde France.
Jose’ Loco won Lite Shod Horse Of The Year for Jessica Hlebak.
Princess Power was Trail Pleasure Horse of the Year for Owner and Trainer Terri Smith, exhibited by Terri Smith and Kayla Baucom.

Ronald Moseley was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award The final award is the Lifetime Achievemnet Award and Mrs. Rhonda Baucom went up front and read the write up she had written and presented the award. First, I would like to give you the definition of a Lifetime Achievement Award: A Lifetime Achievement Award is given to recipients who have dedicated their lives to a worthy cause or somehow made an impact in society or in the lives of others. Please allow me to share a little information about the life of tonight’s recipient. As a young man, he was obsessed with horses and wanted one. His first horse was at the ripe age of 18 and from that point on he was determined to be a horse trainer. His dream because a reality and he began training horses. His first real break came when he met the Holcomb Family. They because involved in the Walking Horse business and it was a family hobby for the Holcomb’s. Then came all the Holcomb children to add to his success. Buffy, Bucky and Gail Holcomb all because more than just horse lovers and great riders, they became part of the family. When it came time to go to the shows, it was like a zoo. Yes, a zoo of kids. It was a tradition for all the other trainers to look for that truck and trailer to pull on the show grounds. They didn’t stand around and count how many horses were on the trailer, they stood there to count the kids that came out of the sleeper, the back of the trailer and the front of the cab. Usually the count was anywhere from 10 to 15 kids, sometimes more. This man didn’t just open his heart for the love of kids, he opened his life and his barn. It because a magnet for his kids, their friends, family and neighbors. The barn because a learning adventure for many kids, learning valuable life lessons from a man who is loved and respected by many. He has touched the lives of so many people. Growing up around the barn there was work to do, but always room for play. Football, basketball and softball were enjoyed on the weekends when there was not a show. This man could often be found initiating a water fight or two. All that fun made you thirsty for a Coke-A-Cola so then it was time to travel, get out your quarters, grab a Coke from the pop machine and look on the bottom of your Coke bottle to see which state was the farthest away. The winner took all the quarters. That’s how the kids learned their states. He has always made time for fun. He was well known for giving everyone a nickname. Here are a few of the most famous: Roy, Smoke, Heavy, Petunia, Pick, Thumbs and Little Ralph. In his career of training horses, he has had the opportunity to put many juvenile and amateur riders in the winner’s circle at some of the most prestigious horse show. These shows include, the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration, The International, the Fun Show, the Trainer’s Show and Asheville just to name a few. Some of the best horses in the business came from his barn: Ebony’s Rebel Yell, Duke’s Counseler, Royal Hayse, Delights Dark Haze, Delight’s Red Cloud, Ebinete H, Be Majors Annie, Ebony’s Dolly, Grand Joy, Olympic Pusher and Jubilee’s Boss Man just to name a few. This trainer has been named the North Carolina Trainer Of The Year too many times to count. He has put many hours and years serving on the North Carolina Walking Horse Association Board Of Directors. A Lifetime Achievement Award is contributing back to the business. A good example would be his dedication to the Tazewell County Horse Show, he has never missed the Tazewell Horse Show. A few years back, Ronanld received an award from the Tazewell Country Horse Show for being the only trainer in history that has never missed their show. That alone speaks volumes. The North Carolina Walking Horse Association would like to thank this member for all his many year of dedication to the board. I think we could all agree that each of us in the room tonight, this special person has made an impact on their lives. Whether as a husband, daddy, papa, brother, father figure or as your friend. I think that about sums him up. It gives me great pleasure to give this Lifetime Achievement Award to my daddy, Mr. Ronald Mosley. .

The beautiful Riverstone Resort and Spa served as host to the almost 200 person event. A buffet style dinner was held with delicious food and tasty dessert. After the meal, the awards began but a fundraiser was held first for the sweet Bentley Grace. Bentley was born with a life threatening birth defect called CDH. It is commonly know as a diaphragmatic hernia. Bentley’s stomach, intestines, and part of her liver were in her chest cavity. She still has a long way to go, but everyone is behind her as long as she’s willing to fight. Prayers and support are appreciated and our goal is to get Bentley healthy and home with her mom, dad, sister, and the rest of her family and friends. A rocking horse was donated and much money was raised for Bentley. Many High Point awards were given out to deserving recipients. Special awards included the Best One Night Show Of
