olumbia, TN- The Columbia Spring Jubilee held their 66th annual horse show on June 1-3, 2017. The show was held at the Maury County Park in Columbia, Tennessee. This historic show was sponsored by The Maury County’s Horseman’s Association. All proceeds from the show benefited the Maury Count FFA, college scholarships and local charities. The show started each night at 6:00 pm. The show began each night respectfully honoring God and America. The National Anthem was beautifully presented with the American flag waving in the night air. This year a special rendition of the sacred hymn was offered as young Garrison Farmer played it on his saxophone.

Scoring the cards for the three day event were Judges Jennifer Bingham, Derek Bonner, and Robbie Spiller. Each class was packed with top competitors. Most of the classes had several world grand champions and world champions in them. Shane Shiflet was on hand to capture the action shots in center ring while The Scoop was outside to get the winning candids. 378 entries were showcased at this year’s Spring Jubilee Horse Show. The crowd got loud and the competition was fierce as some of the industry’s finest young stallions were presented.
Beth Pippin took her turn in the winners’ circle following her Amateur & Canter Championship ride aboard A Cowboy Casanova.
Winning big in the Riders’ Cup Stallions divisions were Two Year Stallion Playing Gin and Rico Bravo, Three Year Old Stallion The Florida Line and Tim Smith, and Four Year Old Stallion Bourbon Street and Chad Way. As the final class arrived, six entries answered the gate call. They were announced individually upon entering the ring. The crowd cheered for their favorites while the judges marked their cards. Only one entry could ride out with the tri-colored ribbon, floral horseshoe and title of Columbia Spring Jubilee Walking Horse Champion and that was Jose Cold Chills and John Allan Callaway for owners LaRue and Ann McWaters. Reserve is this great class was The Land Shark; Casey Wright in the irons for Larry and Pam Russell. Rounding out the top three was Keith Blackburn aboard Jose’s Power Broker for owners Dan and Susan Erwin. The Scoop was thrilled to be part of such a wonderful horse show. Congratulations to all the owners, trainers, exhibitors and spectators who helped make this show a success. The horses were incredible, the food was great, the fellowship was fun, and the show was second to none.

The Scoop For The Walking Horse Industry OBITUARY- BILL HARLIN
OBITUARY- ROBERT F. HURLEY
Mr. William (Bill) Wirt Harlin Jr., age 92, of Nashville, Tennessee, passed away peacefully at his home, Wednesday, June 14, 2017. The eldest son of Luella and Wirt Harlin, Bill was a 1942 Graduate of Battle Ground Academy. He attended the United States Naval Academy and Vanderbilt University, where met his wife, Barbara Ann (Nunnally) Harlin. His professional career began at Red Kap Garment Company, and he later transitioned into the industrial laundry business. Bill was committed to the farming and Tennessee Walking Horse breeding tradition passed down from his father, William Wirt Harlin at Harlinsdale Farm. In later years, he partnered with his brother Tom to complete the sale of the farm to the City of Franklin as a passive park. He was a past president of TWHBEA, from 1984-86, and 1992-93, and a member of the Tennessee Horse Council and the National Horse Council. In 2009, Bill moved the Harlinsdale horses to his farm at College Grove, Tennessee, where his children and grandchildren continue the tradition today. In 2011, Bill received a Distinguished Service Award from the National Pedigreed Livestock Council. He was a Lifetime Trustee of Battle Ground Academy and Director Emeritus of Franklin Synergy Bank. Bill was an active member of Brentwood Hills Church of Christ and The Son Seekers Sunday School Class. He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara, son William Wirt Harlin III, and brothers, Tom, Alex, and Bob. He is survived by his children, Camille Harlin Willis (Hal), Clay Harlin (Faye); grandchildren Bill Harlin (Kelly), Anna Beck (Brad), Tom Harlin (Laura), Talbot Harlin (Ashley), Mary Camille Hickerson, Harlin Hickerson (Mariko), Meredith Harlin Lomasney (Joel), and eight great grandchildren. Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00PM, June 17, 2017 at Brentwood Hills Church of Christ with visitation one hour prior to the service. Walt Leavor will officiate. Visitation with the family will also be from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Friday, June 16, 2017 at Williamson Memorial Funeral Home. Private Graveside services will be in Williamson Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, Brentwood Hills Church of Christ, or Lipscomb University in memory of William Harlin. The Scoop sends our warmest condolences to the Harlin family.

MCHA invites all horse enthusiasts to come sample some of Middle Tennessee’s finest food, horses, and hospitality.
EQUINE OBITUARY- THE BOURNE LEGACY The Bourne Legacy was humanely laid to rest on June 6, 2017 following a long treatment from an injury. The beautiful black stallion was owned by Brad and Trish Harrison. The Bourne Legacy was loved by many Walking Horse enthusiasts after claiming attention as a three year old stallion. At the 2013 Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration, Bill Callaway directed the young stallion to the Three Year Old Stallion Sec. A World Championship and returned to the ring claiming the Three Year Old World Grand Championship title. In 2014 The Bourne Legacy once again claimed World Championship honors by taking the blue in the Four Year Old Stallions Class. The Scoop sends our warmest thoughts to the Harrison Family. He was a great ambassador of our beloved Tennessee Walking Horse.
The Coach’s Son and Brandon Givens were the Smoky Mountain Classic Walking Horse Stake Champions for owner Don Broome.
Givens Wins Stake With The Coach’s Son The 33rd Annual Smoky Mountain Classic Horse Show was held on June 10, 2017 at 6:00pm. The show was located at the Sevier County Fairgrounds and it was dedicated in memory of Rufus Hicks. The judge for the 28 classes was the Honorable Rod Slagle. Gabe Garren had an exciting night picking up three blue ribbons and a reserve. Barron Stables had a wonderful weekend claiming blues in the Performance and Pleasure divisions. Ailshie Stables had a cute little blue ribbon winner in the 11 & Under Class, Braxton Ailshie claimed that blue. Brandon Givens rode to the blue four times. Chris Zahnd had a successful evening as his wife Amber claimed a blue on Creed and Hollywood Handsome. The final class of the evening was the Paul Watlington Memorial Stake Class. It was a large class, and coming out on top was Brandon Givens aboard The Coach’s Son for proud owners Don and Sharon Broome. Reserve in this fine class went to Outta Line Ritz and Chris Zahnd for Mr. James Vernon. Everyone had a great time at the show. The silent auction was packed with great items that people bid on up to the very last minute. There was also a raffle drawing for the 22 Rifle, and it was a big hit. The Ladies Auxiliary had their booth set up selling tee shirts to promote the East Tennessee Association.

The Scoop For The Walking Horse Industry EQUINE OBITUARY - I’M PUSHIN DELIGHT
I’m Pushin’ Delight aka “Travis” was laid to rest at the age of 26 at Dry Dock Stables in Florence, SC on June 5, 2017. He was a 2x World Champion with wins at The Southern Championship, Belfast, Asheville, and Clemson. Dr. Larry Heiden bought him as a yearling and he was started and trained by Debbie Wells. He was a little horse with a big heart and will be missed by all who knew him.
BARNETT/FISHER WEDDING
CANDID OF THE WEEK
Photo courtesy of The Walking Horse Report
Young cancer survivor Tucker Jennings was on top of the world following his lead-line victory at the Cumberland County Horse Show. He was certainly proud to display his trophy and a big smile. His joy was contagious because he certainly did make us smile!
Melanie Barnett and Cory Fisher were united in marriage on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at the St. Johns Episcopal Church in Memphis, Tennessee. A reception followed at The Columns, also located in Memphis. The bride is the daughter of Jean Barnett and William (Bill) Barnett Jr. and the groom is the son of Dorothy Fisher and Robert Larry Fisher. Melanie’s family has longtime ties to the Walking Horse industry. Her grandfather, William (Bill) Carr Barnett Sr. is a member of the Walking Horse Hall of Fame. Melanie, along with her father and sister have also shown many years, owning numerous World and World Grand Champions. At the present, time doesn’t allow her to show because she and her husband are veterinarians. However, they both continue to greatly support the Tennessee Walking Horse and Spotted Saddle Horse industries. The Scoop congratulates Melanie and Cory and wish them many blessed years.
