Horses Jingle Their Way to Shelbyville… Christmas in July Keeps on Giving
helbyville, TN- The annual Christmas in July Horse Show was recently held. This event kicked off the Fourth of July weekend horse shows. This year the show was spread out over two nights and was held June 2829, 2017. Show manager, Julie Lambert reported that there were 359 entries that showed in 52 classes. Money raised from this horse show will brighten the lives of many children on Christmas morning. Horse owners from all over gathered at the Bedford County Ag Center to kick off one of summer’s biggest weekends in the Walking Horse industry. As spectators and exhibtors battled the heat, it never slowed them down from cheering on their favorites. This show was triple points for the Riders’ Cup standings. Judging the event were Chris Bobo, Derek Bonner and Johnny Puckett. Some big winners of the two-night show were the Riders’ Cup stallion winners. Two Year Old Stallions champion was Hollywood Nights and Patrick Thomas for owners Steve and Pat Wilson. The stars were

aligned perfectly for owners Bill and Debbie Woods as their stallions claimed championship honors. Their entries, Pocket Time and He’s A Chip Shot, were the Three Year Old and Four Year Old Stallions winners, respectively, with Casey Wright in the irons. The Riders’ Cup Walking Horse Stake class showcased four great entries. Riding out with the floral horseshoe and a unanimous Christmas in July Walking Horse Stake championship title was Jose Cold Chills and John Allan Callaway. LaRue and Ann McWaters own the entry. Reserve title went to The American Ride and Gary Martin for owner Tom Shealy.

Owners Keith and Lorraine Rosbury proudly hold the floral horseshoe following their Money Tree Walking Horse Stake win with Bill Callway and Gen’s Black Maverick. Friends and family from Callaway stables join the Rosburys and their champion.
The Money Tree Classic Sparkled for the Fourth of July Weekend Shelbyville, TN- On June 30, 2017 the Walking Horse Trainers’ Auxiliary hosted their annual Money Tree Classic Horse Show. The show was part of the Fourth of July lineup which boasts one of the biggest and most competitive weekends of the summer schedule. The horse show was held at the Bedford County Ag Center. While offering double Riders’ Cup Points, the Money Tree Classic was divided into two sessions. At 4:00 PM the Weanlings, Yearlings, Model Horses and Lead Line classes took place. The second session started at 5:30 PM, and offered classes for riders in Equitation, Lite-Shod, Padded Performance and Country Pleasure classes.

The Honorable Travis Craft judged the 40 classes in which 275 entries were showcased. Veterinary services were provided by Baum Equine. The official photographer was Barr Studios, Mark Farrar served as the announcer, and Brian Peery served as the organist. There were many great horses that entered the ring. These horses created very large classes that got the spectators on their feet. Even though classes were still being called beyond midnight, the horse enthusiasts and spectators waited for the final gate-call, the Riders’ Cup Walking Horse Stake. Three very talented horses vied for the title. Repeating their Money Tree Classic Walking
Horse Stake Championship from 2014 and 2016 was Bill Callaway and Gen’s Black Maverick. Keith and Lorraine Rosbury own the champion. Riding to a Reserve title was Jimmy McConnell aboard He’s Shady In Black, for owner Richard Donner. Third place was Lester H Burns. Ryan Blackburn was in the irons for Martin Cox. NCWHA SCHOLARSHIPS The NCWHA is proud to announce the availability of 3 scholarship opportunities for members of the NCWHA. The Dr. Michael H. Piet Memorial Scholarship award of $5000, the Lynn Culbreth Memorial Scholarship award of $1000, and the Ronald Mosley Memorial Scholarship award of $1000 will be awarded during the NCCWHS in October. Applicants must be a least a senior in high school for the 2017-2018 school year, accepted by a college or technical school, and undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to apply. Applicants must have been a member of the NCWHA by June 1, 2017 and the application deadline is September 15, 2017. A scholarship committee for each respective scholarship will select the recipients.

Putnam County Hosts Historical Show
Cookeville, Tennessee Cookeville, TN- On Saturday, July 8, 2017 the Putnam County Agricultural and Industrial Fair held its 91st Annual Open Walking Horse Show, beginning at 6:00 PM. The historical event was held at the Fairgrounds in Cookeville, Tennessee. The horse show was affiliated with the SHOW - HIO and is part of the Upper Cumberland Walking Horse Association. Thirty-two classes were offered to the exhibitors and owners which ranged from the traditional Walking Horse divisions to a few classes for the Racking Horse enthusiast. The Honorable Bill Reel judged the 102 entries that entered the gates. Kelly Cash Sheppard performed a beautiful rendition of our National Anthem. Sheppard represented Tennessee in the 1987 Miss America Pageant. She sung her way to the top bringing home the Miss America crown.
Mid South Horse Show Association Supports A Worthy Cause Jackson, TN- The Mid South Horse Show Association hosted their annual Walking Horse Show on Saturday, July 8, 2017. All proceeds raised from this event were given to Youth Town, a Christian-based alcoholic and drug treatment program for young people. The city of Jackson rallied behind the fundraising efforts by offering auction items, monetary donations and simply attending. This was the 30th year for the show, which was held at the beautiful Pugh Bourne Park in the Oakfield community. The Honorable John Puckett judged the twentyPage 86 / The Scoop
nine classes which showcased 91 entries. Some of the industry’s finest Walking Horses came through the gates and demonstrated the great talents of our beloved breed. Three outstanding entries vied for the Walking Horse Stake Championship. These stallions added excitement to the night’s grand finale. Spectators cheered for their favorite, but only one could win. Claiming the tricolored championship ribbon was Incredible Machine and Blaise Broccard, for owners Joel and Linda Stewart. Reserve title went to Jimmy McConnell aboard the Jimmy and
Edith Dilday entry, The Jazz Player. Rounding out the top three was Jail Time and Casey Wright, for owners Sammy and Gayle Cagle. The Scoop congratulates all workers, spectators, owners, trainers and exhibitors for a stellar show. Professional Racking Horse Trainers’ Association Show Cleveland, TN- The Professional Racking Horse Trainers’ Association recently held their 2017 horse show at the Tri-State Exhibition Center in Cleveland, Tennessee. The event was held June 30 – July 1, 2017. This show was a two-day spectacular with 64 classes in which 232 entries made the gate-call. The show was divided into two divisions; one for Racking Horses and one for Walking Horses. Judging the Racking Horse classes were the Lamar Denny, John Hubbard, Bobby Mitchell and Newton Parks. Judging the Walking Horse classes was Newton Parks. The Scoop was proud to be on hand to catch some great winning candids.

The Scoop For The Walking Horse Industry BEV THORSON OBITUARY Bev Thorson 89 of Bemidji, MN passed away at Sanford Medical Center in Bemidji on Saturday July 8, 2017. Bev was born Beverly Dawn Ness, the daughter of Berth C and Louise P Ness on December 4, 1927 in Hunter, North Dakota. She was born in a house without running water or electricity and was later raised in Mahnomen, MN where she graduated from high school in 1945. She later graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Business Education. During her teenage years, Bev followed the career of high school basketball star, Wayne Thorson from Hendrum, MN -- and later tracked his whereabouts in the South Pacific during the Second World War. Following the war, and while a student at the U of M, Bev learned of the vehicle that Wayne would be riding in from Minneapolis back up north, and arranged for herself to catch a ride in the same car -- which was the first time the two met. They were married on June 19, 1949 and recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary. The couple originally settled in Mahnomen, where Wayne went to work for Bev’s dad in highway construction and Bev became a teacher at Mahnomen high school. The two started their family in Mahnomen, raising three sons and a daughter. But for Bev, the seasonal road construction life meant several summers of living in a travel trailer and raising kids in gravel pits. In 1958 Wayne and Bev started Thorson Construction, and later the couple bought the Bemidji firm, Ritchie and Tell, which brought the family to Bemidji in 1962. The company soon became Thorson Inc., which grew and evolved over the next several decades, and which today is Knife River Materials. In addition to hard work and community involvement, Wayne and Bev were ambitious travelers, visiting many countries and far off lands around the world. They were also founding members of PGA West in La Quinta (Palm Springs) California where they resided during the winter months for the past 32 years. Bev was involved in many clubs, groups, and organizations during her life, including her Bridge Club, PEO, as well as serving on the boards of the Concordia Language Villages and the Paul Bunyan Playhouse. Bev was also an avid golfer, tennis player, skier and a walker. She walked four miles in fifty minutes everyday for 41 years, mostly with her walking partner Mary Jane Stubbins, accumulating mileage that equated in distance to two and a half times around the world. Bev is survived by her husband Wayne, her children Scott (Pam) Thorson of Bemidji, Kari (Jim) Bishop of Solway, MN, Mark (Amy) Thorson of Bemidji, Duke (Rhonda) Thorson of Huron, Ohio, 10 grandchildren, one great grandchild and another on the way. She was preceded in death by her parents and three children, Mark Ness Thorson, Baby Ness Thorson, and a baby unresponsive at birth. A funeral service for Bev will be held on Friday, July 14, 2017 at 11:00 am, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Bemidji with Pastor Corey Fuhrman officiating. Visitation will take place at Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home at 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Thursday, and one hour prior to service at the church. Internment at Greenwood Cemetery will follow after the service and fellowship. The Scoop offers our warmest condolences to the Thorson Family.
MCKENZI ANN LOID OBITUARY McKenzi Ann Loid passed away on June 27, 2017 in Pittsburgh, PA. She was born on Thursday, December 14, 1989 in Bowling Green, KY. She is survived by her parents, Tommy Jr. and Robin Loid of Bowling Green, her brother, Tommy III and wife Krista, sister, Emily Wilkins and husband Craig. Niece and nephew Riley Ruthanne and Tommy Loid IV. Nieces Ella Crews and Dallas Katherine Wilkins all whom were her pride and joy in life. Her paternal grandmother, Ruth Ann Loid, maternal grandparents Doris and Charles Lewis survive. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather Tommy Loid Sr. and her maternal grandfather, Larry Jones. McKenzi is a 2008 graduate of Bowling Green High School and a 2012 graduate of Western Kentucky University. She was employed with Guthrie Mayes Public Relations Firm in Louisville, KY from 20132016. She was involved in many Louisville Charities and Organizations, Brides Against Breast Cancer, YPAL-Young Professionals Association of Louisville, Alzheimer’s Association, and Hopeline Center for Women and families. She moved to Pittsburgh, PA in May 2016 with the Walsh Group as a Public Relations Manager. She was active in the Military Share Program, Autism Speaks, Rebuilding Together, Toys for Tots, Homeless Vets, Food Bank of State College, Cancer Care Partnership of State College, and Focus North America. Funeral services were 11:00 AM, Saturday, July 8th at Living Hope Baptist Church. Visitation was Friday, July 7th, 10:00 AM until 8:00 PM and Saturday 9:00 AM until time for services at Living Hope Baptist Church. Burial followed in Fairview Cemetery #2. Arrangements were entrusted to J.C. Kirby and Son, Lovers Lane Chapel. WILLIAM PENNINGTON OBITUARY William Caudle Pennington, age 88 passed away July 4, 2017. He was a lifelong resident of Thompson Station, TN and member of Thompson Station United Methodist Church. Inductee in the Walking Horse Hall of Fame for his horse training and winning several championships. Preceded in death by parents, William Ernest and Lucille Caudle Pennington and sister, Martha Pennington Shaneyfelt. Survived by: brother, Marion (Karen Baird) Pugh; nephew, James Robert (Kristina) Pugh and great niece, Lizzie Pugh. Funeral services were conducted 11:00 AM Friday, July 7, 2017 at Spring Hill Memorial Funeral Home, with Edwin Murray officiating. Interment was at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Active pallbearers: Mark Whittaker, Don Ellis, Marko Simms, Matthew Lazenby, Bobby Richards and Chris Richards. Honorary pallbearers were members of Thompson Station United Methodist Church and friends in the Walking Horse Association. Memorials may be made to Thompson Station United Methodist Church. WHOA INTERNATIONAL SHOW ANNOUNCES JUDGES & CLASS SCHEDULE The 39th Annual International Pleasure & Colt Grand Championship, scheduled for July 21 - 29, 2017 is soon approaching and promises to be the year’s greatest showcase for the flat-shod Tennessee Walking Horse. As is tradition, the show will be held at the Tennessee Miller Coliseum on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University, 304 West Thompson Lane in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The show will feature a full compliment of classes including dressage, traditional rail and colt classes, versatility and a few just for fun and enjoyed by all ages. A new feature this year begins on Friday, July 21 with barrel racing in Peewee barrels, open gaited horse barrels and open 4D barrels.
