BEDFORD COUNTY STUDENTS GET FREE CELEBRATION TICKETS In a way to promote the 80th Annual Celebration and the Tennessee Walking Horse, the TWHNC has given away over 9,000 free tickets. Each school in Bedford County received enough tickets to give each student free admission on their school’s special night.
The art work of the late Billie Nippers is on display at First Community Bank in Shelbyville, located at 207 Elm Street. The exhibit was done as a memorial to Nippers for all her many contributions to the Celebration. The public can view various works of hers on display throughout the bank’s main lobby. First Community Bank has normal business hours Monday through Friday and open until 12:30pm on Saturday. The Nippers exhibit will be open throughout the Celebration.

Experience, rule book knowledge, and strengths in previous judging assignments were considered by The Celebration’s judge’s committee. This committee is made up of three board members from The Celebration’s board of directors. The 2018 panel is mixed with seasoned and novice Celebration judge’s. Marking the cards for the 80th Annual Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration are Ross Campbell, Mike Hilley, David Sisk, Sam Sorrell and Leigh Stuart.
Ross Campbell- Campbell is a resident of Cullman, Alabama and loves training horses. His father had a barn in the early 70’s and that’s when he developed a love for this amazing breed of horse. His business is primarily performance horses but is quick to add he has nothing against pleasure horses. Campbell and his wife Teresa have two grown daughters. Campbell has been judging racking and walking shows for the past 25 years. He has judged across six states and will be making his first appearance at The Celebration. He is looking forward to the challenge and considers it an honor to be part of this elite group. In his spare time, Campbell likes to hunt and fish.
Mike Hilley- Another novice judge on this year’s panel, is Mike Hilley of Shelbyville, Tennessee. He started working horses in Alabama around the young age of five or six. Even though he no longer trains horses, Hilley still feels very confident to accept the responsibility and can give a unique perspective. He has judged shows for 30 years across four different states. Hilley’s vocation is now construction. Horses are still a huge part of his life, but not in comparison to his faith and family. He has two daughters and one son. His objective as a novice judge is to be honest and rely on his faith in Jesus.
Page 38 / The Scoop
David Sisk- The Columbia, Tennessee resident has been married to his wife Kim for 14 years. The couple have three children. Sisk runs and manages his small dump trucking company in his hometown of Columbia, and also has a small farm with broodmares, hay and cattle. Outside of horses, Sisk is a family man and spends as much time as he can with his wife and kids. Sisk is the youngest judge on this year’s panel and got his judge’s license in 2011. Since then, he has judged 23 major shows in eight different states. He will be marking the cards at The Celebration for the third time. Sisk is looking forward to the task once again and is excited to work with the diverse panel of judges
Sam Sorrell- Making his sixth Celebration appearance as a judge, Sam Sorrell will be the veteran judge who has marked the world championship cards the most. The Lexington, Kentucky resident has had his judge’s license since 1980, and he has judged in 14 different states. The seasoned judge is excited about the challenge of choosing the best of the best. Sorrell is now retired and looks forward to more trail rides and camping in his future. He has been a life-long lover of the Tennessee Walking Horse and his support will continue.
Leigh Stuart- From Bowling Green, Kentucky, Stuart is no stranger to The Celebration. She will be making her fourth appearance in center ring marking the cards. Her judging resume spans seven states. She received her judge’s license in 1982 while being part of a collegiate judging team at Western Kentucky University. Today, her vocation still revolves around horses. She trains country pleasure and performance horses. A huge part of her career being instruction. The mother, daughter, sister, and trainer stays very busy. Outside of her career, Stuart takes care of her 60-acre farm where she raises cattle and hay. In the winter months, she is actively working and promoting her small jewelry business.

It’s horse show time in Tennessee. Since 1939, visitors from all around have been making memories at The Celebration. The Walking Horse Industry has a tremendous impact on the Shelbyville/Bedford County economy. Fuel, real-estate and sales taxes all play an important part. Civic clubs and school organizations also use this event for major fundraising, and at the same time the citizens and local business owners are eager to welcome visitors. Numerous stores, churches, banks and homes are hanging tri-colored bows, banners and supportive signs welcoming guests to each establishment. The Scoop hopes that your time in Shelbyville is a great adventure.
