Explore Your Charitable Options
Philanthropy comes in many forms, whether it’s a monetary donation to your favorite charity or a morning spent running laps to raise awareness for a devastating disease. Between the pages of Oklahoma Magazine’s 2018 Social Datebook – our annual guide to charitable events and programs in Greater Tulsa and Greater Oklahoma City – you’ll find hundreds of happenings to attend. These affairs range in scope from small art shows and 5K runs to black-tie galas raising millions of dollars, but the connecting thread between them all is the worthiness of their causes. Also included in this helpful guide are stories meant to help everyone navigate the nonprofit world – from beginners to professionals. For those seeking the right opportunity to give, we have “Arm Yourself with Knowledge,” which offers expert advice on choosing which charities should receive your donations. In “Make Your Case,” learn what Frank Merrick, an expert in foundation management, says about strategic planning, and in “Give Yourself, Not Just Your Money,” learn how to support organizations that desperately need your time. Ultimately, the 2018 Social Datebook strives to streamline your search to find a cause or an event that fits your interests. I hope you explore all your options for supporting charitable organizations in this special publication. Vida Schuman Publisher and Founder
P.S. We go to great lengths to ensure any and all charitable events in the Tulsa and Oklahoma City metro areas are included in our guide, but some inevitably get left out, or dates change. To submit an event for the 2019 Social Datebook, email the details to events@okmag.com. 2

Arm Yourself with Knowledge
With so many worthy causes, what should you look for before donating to a nonprofit? Nonprofits tackle some of the biggest challenges facing our communities: homelessness, conservation, hunger, arts education and many others. There are many reasons to be generous. But as a donor, you need knowledge in order to give wisely. Arming yourself with information allows you to be sure your donation gets to the right place. The Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits is a management support organization that strengthens nonprofits through services like education and consulting. President and CEO Marnie Taylor says donors should first consider “their hearts, their heads and their hands” when determining where to give. “A donation should make everyone feel 6
SOCIAL DATEBOOK | 2018
good. You should feel something special. It should also speak to your head – does it make good economic sense? And hands? The more experience you have with a nonprofit – hands-on experience – the more passion you develop,” Taylor says. Donors can gain this hands-on experience through volunteering, which can also provide insights into a nonprofit’s programming and its role in the community. Resources like GuideStar, BBB Wise Giving Alliance and Charity Navigator guide donors toward legitimate causes and organizations. These websites allow visitors to access detailed financial information, analyze outcomes and compare various organizations

in scope and scale. And for those interested in an even deeper dive, most nonprofits provide annual reports on their websites with more detailed information concerning both financial and programmatic outcomes. However, Taylor warns against too much emphasis on “overhead.” In the nonprofit sector, overhead refers to administrative and indirect costs such as technology for staff and funds needed for marketing campaigns. “Yes, there are organizations with questionable ‘extravagant’ expenses, but 99 times out of 100, most organizations are operating with too little ‘overhead’: old computers, not enough office resources, lack of administrative support, very little accounting and business support. We need these in the nonprofit sector to make an impact,” Taylor says. Instead, Taylor says that potential donors should look for outcomes and consider nonprofits that show the impact a financial gift makes.
8
SOCIAL DATEBOOK | 2018
“Stop worrying about return on investment. If we want to invest, we visit a broker. Instead, we should focus on impact. What impact does my gift have on the end-user, the consumer?” Taylor says. Around the holidays, from Thanksgiving through the New Year, donations are especially important, because these campaigns are often critical to a nonprofit’s year-round success. “We need to give and give big,” Taylor says. “Most of us don’t need that extra ‘thing’ in our lives, but so many people in Oklahoma need basic ‘things’ such as food, housing and educational assistance. Also, museums create vibrant communities and places to gather among beauty and art or to showcase our history. They also need our support. Talk with loved ones and friends about making the holidays a season of true giving.” MEGAN MORGAN

Make Your Case
Defining need is the secret to optimal strategic planning for nonprofits.
To stay viable in challenging times, nonprofits must be smart in focus and self-definition long before hosting a fundraiser or sending donation-seeking letters. Know your community well and tailor plans accordingly, says Frank Merrick, executive director of the City of Muskogee Foundation and president of Foundation Management Inc. in Oklahoma City. Merrick’s passion is evident: He wants to see nonprofits succeed in creating and maintaining robust, effective services for their communities. “Whatever you’re doing, whether it’s a trifold brochure or a website – whatever the plan is – you have to have a clear story on your mission,” he says. “So we always say, ‘Make 10
SOCIAL DATEBOOK | 2018
your case.’ Many people may rely on your services, and we too often see community services, mental health, etc., failing. Say you have an after-school program but no longer receive Head Start money and are trying to feed 200 kids a snack and provide tutors. Share how pre- and post-testing shows the tutoring is raising test scores, for example. Make your case by defining needs, being specific. Itemize money allocation – how much for staff, rent, food, etc.” A key area to emphasize in making your case, Merrick says, is whom you are partnering with in your community. “Are you working with a food bank, churches? All of that needs to be clarified
and well-articulated before you ask for more money. The less words you use, the better,” he says. “Be succinct. Images are better than words. Demonstrate successes with stories. You don’t have to reveal names. Say ‘We’ve helped 200 people into recovery,’ but also tell about one family reunited in divorce court. Show your mission accomplishments in your success stories. The macro statistics are good, but you have to tug on the emotions.” Every community is unique, says Merrick. A large metropolitan area will have some wealthy individuals and groups, but in Nowata, not so much. Reaching out directly to the people who support your community is important because people tend to give close to home. This can include people who once lived in the community, because you’re seeking people who have an interest in the vibrancy of your area. The point is to get the right people on board, whether it’s a volunteer for grant writing or that person who can throw a party to get the right people to your event. “So make your case, define your need,
study your community and then fundraise accordingly,” Merrick says. “In some communities, this will be a casual chili supper, but in Oklahoma City, probably something more elaborate. There’s also the successful trend of the ‘No Event’ fundraiser – where letters say, ‘Please send us $100 and we’ll send a Sonic coupon so you stay home with your family while supporting our organization.’ For other nonprofits, the audience wants dinner, dancing and an evening out.” Once your event is planned, be sure to get pricing right. “Please charge enough for events so that your fundraiser has more revenue than expense,” Merrick says. “I often see too much money spent on wine, flowers and food and then not enough money is raised to make the event effective. Also, think twice about having a cash bar – most people dislike them even though it does help in keeping people from drinking too much. But many people would rather be charged enough up front.” TRACY LEGRAND

Give Yourself, Not Just Your Money
It may seem easier to donate, but many nonprofits also need volunteers. In this busy world, time is often the most precious of commodities. We all have many demands on our time: work, families, friends, hobbies and time just to relax and refresh. So, when we offer our time to help others, it can be an invaluable gift. There are few organizations that realize this more fully than nonprofits. And that gift of time is incredibly valuable to the mission of these groups. Many of these service organizations would not exist were it not for the gift of time from hundreds or thousands of volunteers on a regular basis. “If we did not have volunteers, we would not be able to accomplish the goal or ministry 12
SOCIAL DATEBOOK | 2018
of The Salvation Army,” says Liz Banks, volunteer coordinator with the church’s Central Oklahoma Area Command. The Salvation Army in central Oklahoma relies on approximately 4,000 volunteers annually to provide assistance with its food pantry, shelter, senior centers, Boys and Girls Clubs, disaster relief, and Red Shield Diner and Kitchen, Banks says. These volunteers provide thousands of hours of service and are integral to the operation of many Salvation Army services. “It would be impossible to meet the community’s needs without our dedicated volun-
teers,” says Banks. The Tulsa Area United Way and its 59 partner agencies also rely on the service of volunteers. “Volunteers are the difference in any organization,” says Brent Sadler, vice president of community investments at the Tulsa Area United Way. At the United Way, the entire operating model is predicated on volunteers, such as the board of directors, women’s and young professionals’ groups, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program and the volunteers who represent the community in deciding where United Way funds are invested, says Sadler. “There is no United Way without the leadership and volunteers directing in investment of community dollars and community action,” he says. The impact of volunteerism on nonprofits on a large scale is staggering. According to Points of Light – an international, U.S.-based nonprofit organization dedicated to volunteer service –volunteers dedicate 5 million hours
0313 1 1019 Fabricut.indd SDB Fabricut.indd 1
of service per year, which is an annual dollar value of $482 million. This all translates into money saved by nonprofits that couldn’t afford to pay people to perform all of these tasks. Sadler echoes this sentiment. “Because of volunteers, the United Way is able to invest many more dollars from the community back into the community,” he says. As you consider what you can offer to the causes you are passionate about, remember the value of your time. Sometimes giving of yourself in the form of expertise and time can be just what your favorite nonprofit needs and can make your life more fulfilling in the process. “We match volunteers with opportunities to serve others – and people want to serve others,” Sadler says. “It is a privilege to match that spirit of service with the needs of our community.” BONNIE RUCKER
