It’s the Perfect Time to Start Giving

Starting a new decade is the ideal moment to turn over a new, philanthropic leaf. Join the countless Oklahomans already giving of their time, talents and treasures by getting involved in a charitable cause in 2020. The beauty of these efforts is that the options are endless. You can donate money to issues you feel strongly about; mentor at-risk youth in your community; volunteer your time with soup kitchens or homeless shelters; or participate in an athletic event to show your support. We make finding those opportunities easy with this publication. You’ll find hundreds of events within Oklahoma Magazine’s 2020 Social Datebook – our annual guide to charitable events and programs in Greater Tulsa and Greater Oklahoma City. Choices include swanky galas, intimate gatherings for up-and-coming nonprofits, lively 5Ks, artistic events and much more. Whatever you like to do, you can find an event to fit your interests. More than just a listing, the Social Datebook offers articles on different facets of the nonprofit sector. This year, we look at a day in the life of a volunteer; the hard work homeless shelters are doing to help the state’s less fortunate; and a breakdown of new tax laws that may impact charitable giving. The bottom line is that the Social Datebook is made for you to ensure you get the most out of your charitable giving this year. I hope you find a cause that sparks your passion. Sincerely, Vida Schuman Publisher and Founder

P.S. We go to great lengths to make sure any and all charitable events in the Tulsa and Oklahoma City metro areas are included in our guide, but some inevitably get left out, or dates change. To submit an event for the 2021 Social Datebook, email the details to events@okmag.com. 2

Intangible Rewards of Giving Time Volunteers help service organizations cut costs, but the gratification they get in helping others exceeds dollars and cents.

We all know it takes a special person to give up time in order to help organizations with numerous causes and missions. Given that, Oklahoma is packed with special people. Greg Raskin, communications manager at the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma in Tulsa, attests to that. “From our perspective, volunteers bring life to the food bank,” he says. “We have enthusiastic volunteers here and offsite six days a week. They eagerly arrive and want to help improve their community.” In 2018, according to Raskin, more than 10,000 volunteers contributed the equivalent of $1.6 million in labor, enabled the food bank to acquire bulk food items at low costs and 6

provided efficient methods to move that food to partner agencies. “Volunteers help in a variety of ways … working side by side with our professional chefs, assisting at events and helping with all types of office work,” says Raskin, adding that volunteers are some of the best advocates for those who often do not know where they will get their next meals. “Our volunteers understand the scope of hunger in Oklahoma. Their compassion and willingness to help provide insight to others in the community.” Sand Springs resident Kenneth Baker, 76, volunteers at the food bank twice a week to help with whatever needs to be done. “I look forward to it,” he says. “It’s gratify-

ing knowing you are helping people who are hungry. I am blessed in ways that other people don’t have. You hear about all the bad news on television, but you don’t hear about good things like the food banks.” Volunteers play critical roles in other venues. Mary Cornelsen, director of education, outreach and volunteer services at the YWCA Oklahoma City, says they help the organization achieve its mission of eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice and dignity for all. “Each year, more than 400 volunteers and student interns support survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking in their darkest hours by helping them access confidential, free crisis services offered by the YWCA,” Cornelsen says. “So far in 2019, volunteers donated more than 15,400 hours of service, which saved the YWCA more than $392,000. Volunteers stand by victims of sexual assault at hospitals, provide support at our emergency shelter for domestic violence survivors fleeing lethal situations, and escort victims to court and help them navigate the legal system.” Cynthia Samaniego Frausto, majoring in social work at the University of Oklahoma, has

8

volunteered at the YWCA for nearly a year. “I love to volunteer there for the experience and also the impact I am creating in the lives of the clients who go through those doors every day,” she says. “My main job as a volunteer is to alleviate some of the stress that the amazing advocates who work there go through all the time. I wouldn’t give it up for anything in the world, no matter the tears and sweat.” Other volunteers love working within their communities to help shape the lives of young people. Lynda Landrith of Yukon has donated her time and energy to various causes for more than 50 years. “I started volunteering with 4-H back in 1968, when I was a freshman at Oklahoma State University,” she says. “It was a great way to give back to a program that had given me so much. I also got to be with my kids and now with my grandkids as a leader and a volunteer.” In 1990, Landrith was named one of the three outstanding 4-H alumni in Oklahoma. “When you volunteer, it can be so rewarding, especially over an extended period of time with the same kids,” Landrith says. “You watch them grow into wonderful, productive young men and women.” DEBI TURLEY

Providing Needed Items

Organizations for homeless and disenfranchised people welcome gifts of clothing, household goods and other products.

The good will and nostalgia of the winter holidays tend to make people count their blessings ... at the same time as service organizations need people to step up and serve homeless and disenfranchised people. Many families are searching for ways to give to those less fortunate; there are several ways to do so. For instance, a family can agree to make donations in lieu of gifts to each other during the holidays. Monica Martin, director of development for the Tulsa Day Center, also 10

SOCIAL DATEBOOK | 2020

describes a growing trend of children foregoing birthday presents. “We’ve had young kids who ask for our needs list on our website or our Facebook page, and have other kids invited to celebrate their birthday to bring the most needed items to donate as the presents,” Martin says. “One little girl had a goal of collecting 52 housewarming kits, one for every week of the year, to donate. She made it to 50 donated kits and we honored her for her generosity of spirit.”

Housewarming kits are presented to families and individuals for whom the Day Center finds homes so that they have all “the things you need, such as pots, pans, shower curtain, spoons, forks, ladles, dish towels, oven mitts, hand towels, bath towels, cleaning supplies, an alarm clock so you can get to work … really just everything you need to start a home,” Martin says. Gently used items are welcomed, especially blankets, jeans, coats, sleeping bags and towels, and all are laundered before distribution, Martin says. Brand new items, including socks and undergarments, are especially welcome. “As the weather changes and gets colder, the amount of people we’re serving increases,” Martin says. “December is a time when our hearts are about buying gifts for friends and family, so the homeless are not as often thought of, so we push our specific needs out

0313 1 1019 Fabricut.indd SDB Fabricut.indd 1

on Facebook, and it gets to the community and churches to respond in an outpouring that is just what our clients need.” Major Susan Ellis, the Salvation Army’s Oklahoma City area commander, says the community helps to provide for the needs of the guests who stay with the organization. She suggests the following items as particularly useful: disposable razors for men and women, shaving cream, shampoo, bars of soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, bath towels and wash cloths, hairbrushes, hygiene products, combs, gently used blankets (especially twin sized), hats, gloves and socks for men, women and children. Items can be dropped off at 1001 N. Pennsylvania Ave., the group’s administrative offices, 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. Monday through Friday, Ellis says. TRACY LEGRAND

Tax Changes Affect Donations

The doubling of standardized deductions means big changes for those writing off charitable contributions. With tax code changes and an increased desire from charitable donors to understand where their money goes, nonprofits try to meet the changing needs of philanthropic giving. Daniel Billingsley, vice president of external affairs for the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits, says today’s most notable factor for individual donors is that the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 no longer gives many Americans financial incentives to contribute to charities because standardized deductions doubled. While placing pressure on nonprofits to remain fiscally viable, the tax changes do not impact donors who exceed standardized deductions. Those 12

SOCIAL DATEBOOK | 2020

who itemize their deductions still get to write off donations on their tax forms. The increases in standardized deductions “simplified the tax structure, so fewer people have access to the tax deduction for charitable giving,” Billingsley says. “This type of charitable giving happens in December, with 12 percent of all charitable deductions from individuals coming the last three days of the year. Until the change, the charitable gift incentives were a huge plus for nonprofits and helped people to determine the time and size of gifts. “But today, 95 percent of Americans will not be itemizing their taxes as we’ve already seen

from data from sources like USA Today – that for the first time, the number of individual donors has decreased. That could really hurt philanthropy, especially those accustomed to making their large donations at the end of the year.” Individuals giving to charities can earmark money for specific uses upon request, Billingsley says, but that is less common than corporate gifts, which tend to be specific (such as naming opportunities). Individuals usually give to midyear or year-end campaigns and those gifts may be restricted to specific fundraising events, while most donations go into general funds, which are, he says, the “best, unrestricted gifts, which provide leeway to keep that money open to various programs and operational needs.” Charitable corporate giving can be easily earmarked, Billingsley says, because “restricted gifts are more in the realm of the foundation and corporate world. Foundations are going to set parameters on what they give to. For example, say a company is interested in a specific program, then they can donate to that specific program and they’ll have reporting requirements and maybe even site visits. There are foundations that will

give operational gifts, but typically companies and foundations will invest their money into nonprofits with a goal of specific outcomes for the community. “The biggest trend we continue to see are more stringent reporting requirements from foundations, partly because foundations have changed to focus on very specific areas and programs of the community. For individuals, probably the most important trend is the idea of democratic philanthropy as giving at any level from $10 to $10,000 to $10 million, that every segment of the population should have access to giving philanthropically and we see this a lot with crowdsourcing gifts.” For those wanting to give but who want to check the bona fides of an organization, Billingsley says to check out vetting websites. He adds that donors should not “be so concerned with overhead as nonprofits can have high overhead and some is needed or they don’t have administrative oversight and lower than 25 percent overhead is reasonable. Be more concerned with the longevity of the organization.” SUZANNA MAXWELL
