Now More Than Ever When it comes to covering philanthropic events and charitable giving, let Oklahoma Magazine be your guide. Firmly committed to philanthropy in all its many forms, we spotlight as many causes as possible each year. As part of this commitment, we proudly present the 2015 Social Datebook, the most comprehensive list of fundraising events in both the Oklahoma City and Tulsa metro areas. This annual guide to charitable events is your path to a variety of benefits – from galas and dinner to concerts and festivals. Whether it’s a black-tie affair or a 5k run, there’s an event for everyone to make life a little better for Oklahomans everywhere. Nonprofit organizations reach out to help families and individuals with assistance, including childcare necessities, home repairs, job programs for the disabled and scholarships for students. Nonprofits, however, cannot do it alone. They need your help to make the most impact in their communities. Fundraiser events are a tool that offers a fun experience of giving to a worthy cause. Everybody wins. Whether you give by a monetary donation or by volunteering your time, the difference you make for nonprofits and the people they help goes a long way. In these pages, you will find articles with useful tips and information from fundraising professionals about charitable giving. You’ll also find a list of fundraiser events ordered by date and location. I hope you will make the most of the information contained in Oklahoma Magazine’s 2015 Social Datebook and use it as a starting point to give generously to your community. Vida Schuman Publisher and Founder PS: We’ve made every effort to include all charitable events in the Tulsa and Oklahoma City metro areas, but some events are inevitably left out or schedules are changed. Circle Of Friends

Nonprofits impact Oklahoma’s economy and remain reliant on community and individual commitment. Though many people are not aware of it, the nonprofit community is an enormous contributor to the Oklahoma economy. According to data from the National Council of Nonprofits, there are more than 17,000 nonprofits in Oklahoma, employing more Oklahomans than the energy industry. That’s a lot of jobs, especially during a period of economic recovery. “Nonprofits are significant economic drivers in the state,” says Daniel Billingsley, vice president of external affairs for Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits. “Oklahoma continues to have a strong, educated and specialized group of men and women dedicated to improving the lives of people throughout the state.” Nonprofits cover a range of missions, from international development and disaster relief to animal welfare to museums. Most nonprofits don’t have big budgets to work with, but it’s through organizations like the National Council of Nonprofits, the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits and the Tulsa Area United Way that smaller nonprofits can join forces to effectively use their limited resources to make the most impact in the communities they serve. The Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits’ mission, for example, is to assist nonprofits with training, says Billingsley. The center also provides consulting, advocacy, membership, networking and recognition for Oklahoma nonprofits. The National Council of Nonprofits has a 6

SOCIAL DATEBOOK | 2015

similar mission. With a network of more than 25,000 members, it has the nation’s largest network of nonprofits, explains Howard Barnett, a former president of the National Council of Nonprofits and the current president of Oklahoma State University-Tulsa. “The National Council of Nonprofits serves as a central coordinator and mobilizer to help nonprofits achieve greater collective impact in local communities across the country,” he says. That impact is significant. A recent study commissioned by the Tulsa Area United Way revealed an annual economic impact of more than $285 million in the Tulsa area, says Mark Graham, TAUW president and CEO. TAUW investments also generate more than $22 million annually in tax revenue for the state

and community. The study shows the local United Way’s investment in its partner agencies directly and indirectly supported 5,760 jobs in Tulsa. “Oklahoma nonprofits generate more than $14 billion in revenue, pumping dollars directly into the state economy,” adds Barnett. “This aspect is magnified beyond the nonprofit. For example, a local nonprofit theater group not only generates its own revenue and jobs, but theatergoers also likely patronize local restaurants or bars when they go out. Secondly, nonprofits are the safety net for communities, providing services such as job training, emergency aid and family services that enable individuals to be self-reliant and employable.” While most experts agree Oklahoma continues to fare better than many other states in the rate of its economic recovery since the recession, demands for services and aid have exponentially stressed most nonprofits across the state. “The nonprofit community does see four distinct populations in the state that require the most services: children, elderly and aging, persons with disabilities (physical, mental and psychiatric) and veterans,” Billingsley says. “Nonprofits – including hospitals, hospice care facilities and long-term care facilities – are facing multiple challenges to deliver prompt and effective services.” Barnett says the nonprofit sector tends to take longer to recover after a recession: First,

the stock market recovers, then Main Street businesses, then governments and, finally, nonprofits. “Demand for nonprofit services remains high right now and, according to data from the Nonprofit Finance Fund, more than half of nonprofits continue to report that they will not be able to meet those demands,” Barnett says. While donations have slowly started to rebound, they don’t begin to fill the gaps left by cuts made by governments due to the recession, Barnett says. “While the economic recovery has helped Oklahoma achieve some of the lowest unemployment rates in the country coupled with excellent job opportunities and business growth, the state is still faced with higher than average poverty and disability rates,” Billingsley says. “When nonprofits have adequate resources, we can increase educational impact, decrease poverty, lessen the impact of preventable diseases and improve Oklahoma’s incarceration rates.” According to TAUW data, contributions have increased every year since 2008, says Graham. “This indicates a caring and generous community and healthy economy in the Tulsa area,” Graham says. However, it’s still important for organizations and individuals to donate both time and money to nonprofits. Some donations are even tax-deductible. “Funding helps our 61 partner agencies deliver critical services to the three building blocks to a better life: education, financial stability and health/safety,” Graham says. “Your dollars, your volunteer hours and your best ideas are combined and focused on opportunities to make our communities stronger and safer.” And that’s true for nonprofits across the state, Graham adds. Time To Fill

Volunteers remain a vital part of making nonprofits work in Oklahoma. Volunteers are vital to nonprofit organizations. Their spare hours spent working without compensation is a priceless asset to passion projects around the state. Many nonprofits could not fulfill their fundamental missions without the assistance of volunteers. Emergency Infant Services maintains a staff of only 15 employees, but 95 volunteers show up every week to help them provide basic necessities to more than 16,000 children in the Tulsa area each year. They sort diapers, hang clothing and interview new clients. “We have volunteers that help us with about every aspect of what we do,” says Tom Taylor, executive director of EIS. “We try to match them to a volunteer experience that they think they will be good at.” Up With Trees, a Tulsa nonprofit dedicated to creating a more beautiful city through planting trees and caring for an urban forest, also relies 8

SOCIAL DATEBOOK | 2015

on volunteers to accomplish its goals. “We are dependent on volunteers to help us maintain over 20,000 trees at [more than] 600 sites throughout the Tulsa area,” says Julie Davis, Up With Trees associate director. “These volunteers help us to prune, water and clean the sites, as well as to plant additional trees in public places throughout the city.” Other organizations, such as the Homeless Alliance in Oklahoma City, require volunteers only a few times a year, but when they’re needed, much is asked of them. “Every year we do a Registry Week where we send out over 100 extremely dedicated volunteers at 4 a.m., three days in a row, to identify our most vulnerable or at-risk homeless residents and prioritize them for permanent housing,” explains Kim Woods, deputy director for the Homeless Alliance. “Person-specific data collected during our registry week is the key to

ending homelessness for our most vulnerable – and often anonymous – homeless neighbors, and we would not be able to do this without volunteers.” Volunteer hours allow nonprofits to put donations and grant money they receive directly back into their ultimate service goals. This sort of in-kind donation is essential for nonprofits to run efficiently. “Our volunteers are actually a huge contributor because they are giving of their time,” says Taylor. Volunteers provide staffing EIS would otherwise be unable to afford, Taylor adds. Combined with faith-based organizations and corporations that also pitch in, EIS’ volunteers have allowed the family-focused organization to put 92 cents of every dollar they earn toward providing for their clients. “A lot of the people we work with, they just don’t want to see a baby go hungry,” he adds. And it’s not just adults making a considerable contribution of time and talent. “I have a junior board that’s comprised of

high school students, sophomores through seniors,” says Taylor. “I have a young professional board that is [made up of] people just leaving college or entering into the workforce, all the way up to their late 30s.” EIS sometimes even allows children to volunteer (the child must be accompanied by a parent). Davis says Up With Trees has a lot of diversity among its volunteer base. “We have volunteers of all ages and walks of life – from young Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to retired individuals wanting to help keep Tulsa green,” Davis says. Each of these organizations gets hundreds of volunteers each year, many recruited through word-of-mouth and social media. Yet, there are always the familiar faces that turn up at every call for extra hands. “Many of our volunteers return often to help – those are our Citizen Foresters,” says Davis. “We have some volunteers who have been volunteering since our organization began 40 years ago.”

“Our volunteers are actually a huge contributor because they are giving of their time.”

How To Give Smart

Finding the right charity involves compassion, awareness and sense. Though the impulse to give should come from one’s heart, the process of giving should be thoughtful. With more than 1.5 million nonprofit organizations in the U.S. – about 20,000 of those are in Oklahoma – there are numerous philanthropic options. But with all of these choices, it can be difficult to know where to begin. The first step in weeding through these organizations to find the right fit is simple: Do your homework. “If I want to know what an organization is doing, I’m going to talk to them. I’m going to ask about their programs. I’m going to look on any social media pages they have available so that I get a very clear sense of what they’re doing,” says Kitt Letcher, CEO of the Better Business Bureau of Central Oklahoma. The BBB has free resources for potential donors. A nonprofit itself, the BBB promotes good business practices and consumer trust. In addition to reviewing many businesses, it also evaluates charitable organizations and has 20 standards of trust that each nonprofit must pass annually to be accredited by the BBB. The organization also looks at nonprofits’ boards of directors and examines how much of the funds raised actually go to the intended programs, how much goes to overhead and other questions to determine the substance of a charity beyond the mission statement. Another very useful resource in gathering 12

SOCIAL DATEBOOK | 2015

and disseminating information about nonprofits is the website www.guidestar.org. This online database provides extensive reports and reviews on every IRS-registered nonprofit in the nation. Resources like the BBB and Guidestar are pivotal in the philanthropic process because they keep nonprofits accountable and transparent. “Charities, by their nature, have to be completely transparent in how they spend their money and where they get their funding from,” says Letcher. No matter how great the organization’s mission seems, Letcher believes that a charity’s unwillingness to divulge its financial information and annual reports should always be a deal breaker. “Transparency is of the utmost importance,” says Caroline Gist, president of the board of directors for the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Oklahoma Chapter. “Everyone has so many choices concerning how they spend their money, and so [charities] need to be good stewards of the funds they receive from the public.” In fact, in order to protect citizens from fraud, Oklahoma has created laws mandating charities that solicit donations to periodically file reports with the state; these reports are open to the public. Though nonprofits are dependent on the public’s altruism, the possibility of fraud among some is a real threat.

This threat is amplified after national disasters and tragedies. For example, following the tornado that devastated Moore in May 2013, numerous scammers created fake charities to steal money from those wanting to send relief. “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is,” says Craig Davis, associate state director of communications for AARP Oklahoma. Much of his work focuses on informing seniors, often the most vulnerable to fraud, on how to avoid such scams. Potential red flags include a vague description of the organization, an overly emotional appeal, intense pressure to give on the spot, organization names that are very similar to other well-known organizations and requests for credit card information over the phone. In addition to stealing money, fraudulent fronts also steal trust and may blemish the cause

0313 1 1019 Fabricut.indd SDB Fabricut.indd 1

of real charities working hard to help others. Still, the best way to avoid fraud is to meet the people behind the organization. “I don’t really call it fundraising. I call it ‘friendraising,’” says Gist. She believes that when a person gets to know an organization’s members and feels that they can relate to the mission on a personal level, trust can be established. “Supporting a nonprofit is a process and a relationship that should be built. It’s not merely a one-time payment transaction,” says Gist. Ultimately, contributions to charity are not limited to monetary funds. For many organizations, manpower is just as valued as fiscal donations. “Sometimes, the best way to contribute to an organization is to give your time,” says Davis. NATHAN PORTER
