Philanthropy = Everyone Wins
We at Oklahoma Magazine are firmly committed to philanthropy in all its forms; with that, we proudly present the 2017 Social Datebook, our annual guide to charitable events and programs in Greater Tulsa and Greater Oklahoma City. This useful resource lists a variety of events, ranging from black-tie galas to 5K runs, all benefiting a worthy cause. All these organizations appreciate your donations, but there are other ways to help. Volunteering your time is equally valuable to many of these groups, and purchasing tickets to these tax-deductible events not only helps others but provides an enjoyable experience for you. Everyone wins. The 2017 Social Datebook makes it easy to find a cause or an event that fits your interests and pocketbook. I hope you explore all your options for helping others with our special publication.
Vida Schuman Publisher and Founder
P.S. We’ve made every effort to include all charitable events in the Tulsa and Oklahoma City metro areas, but some events are inevitably left out or schedules are changed. To submit an event for the 2018 Social Datebook, email the details to events@okmag.com. 2

High Tech Philanthropy Giving in the Digital Age is only a click away. The internet has made nearly every aspect of our lives easier, from keeping in touch with friends and family to navigating our way across town. It has also made it more convenient – and in some ways more affordable – to give to charities. Through the Google Chrome add-on Tab for a Cause, people can help raise money for philanthropic causes by just opening a new tab on their web browsers. Every time a user opens a new tab, ad revenue is generated and all of the profits go to the selected cause. Tab for a Cause has raised over $270,000 for charities like water.org and Save the Children. People can also donate while shopping online without spending anything extra. 6
SOCIAL DATEBOOK | 2017
Goodshop offers deals to popular stores, and when someone buys online, a percentage of that purchase goes to the charity of choice. Users save money and donate all at the same time. Amazon offers a similar service. When users shop through AmazonSmile, 0.5 percent of money from eligible purchases goes to a charity chosen by the shopper from a list of nearly a million. If people would rather do their shopping in person, Common Kindness offers coupons for household items and groceries. When a coupon is clipped from the website, Common Kindness donates to that shopper’s favorite nonprofit. People can also fund causes directly through crowdsourcing websites. The most
well-known is GoFundMe, which has raised more than $2 billion for people across the globe. The site is commonly used for causes like raising money for medical bills when families cannot afford to pay, but it can also be used to fund education or travel. Individuals share their stories, and donors choose who they would like to support. Crowdrise provides a comparable service with an edgier vibe. Their slogan is, “If you don’t give back no one will like you.” And if being liked isn’t a good enough incentive, the website also offers a rewards program. The “decent humans,” as they call their users, earn points for donating, which can then be redeemed for Crowdrise gear or additional donations to their favorite causes. Kiva is a crowdsourced interest-free loan website where people in more than 80 countries can request a certain amount of money to attend school, start a business, buy farm supplies and much more. Users can lend
8
SOCIAL DATEBOOK | 2017
$25 or more to help them reach their goals. Once that loan is repaid, lenders can put that money towards other loans or withdraw the money. Approximately 97 percent of Kiva loans have been repaid. For those who would rather give time than money, Volunteer Match connects people with causes that could use an extra hand in their area. Volunteers can search through requests for help to find the opportunity they’re interested in, whether that’s helping kids learn to read, fostering an animal or maintaining hiking trails. If people like to work out, they can download the Charity Miles app and generate donations while they run. If they would rather play a game, they can earn food for the hungry on FreeRice.com just by answering quiz questions. With seemingly endless easy, accessible ways to give online, being charitable is only a click away. BETH WEESE

Giving After You’re Gone
Charitable estate donations allow philanthropists to continue their legacy of giving. Donating in support of charitable organizations is a priority for many people – whether it’s their church, a nonprofit they support or their alma mater. These donors have decided that the mission of this organization deserves their hard-earned dollars. But how can dedicated philanthropists ensure their charitable organizations of choice continue to receive the vital donations they require? This can be achieved through careful philanthropic planning, or planned giving, which often includes planning to give from the donor’s estate. This sort of planning takes time and effort and can be an uncomfortable topic for some people. So what benefits are there to planned giving – for both donors and the charities 10
SOCIAL DATEBOOK | 2017
they care about? Diana Lasswell, Oklahoma State University Foundation associate vice president of gift planning, has worked in the nonprofit sector for 23 years and specifically in gift planning for the last 10 years. She meets many donors who genuinely want to give back. “I find often times that donors have received a hand up in the past and desire to offer the opportunity to others,” she says. Mark Loeber, CEO and founder of The Advancement Group, which provides planned giving services for many nonprofits including the Tulsa Community Foundation and the Arts & Humanities Council of Tulsa, highlights the importance of planned giving
in helping charitable organizations. “Many people give sacrificially to [charities] during life and don’t think about the financial consequences to the charity at their passing away,” he says. “Estate gifts can continue our giving beyond our living that would otherwise end.” Planning estate giving also sends an important message to future generations. Donors are able to convey the importance of giving to others by including charitable gifts in their estate planning, Loeber says. “In essence, they are transferring their value and their values.” There are some very practical reasons for estate planning that come in the form of tax benefits. Loeber says a properly designed estate plan can reduce some unnecessary taxes, allowing for more of the estate to go to family or nonprofit organizations that work in the areas of interest of the donor. Gifts to charitable organizations in turn receive charitable estate tax deductions. There are benefits to the nonprofits who are included in donors’ estate planning beyond the obvious cash donation. There can be a lot
of uncertainty for organizations that rely on community support. These final gifts from donors can replace the annual gifts the charities had relied upon and can, in some cases, provide ongoing support. “Planned gifts can often provide the endowed support a charity needs to be able to continue for the coming years, connecting the donors with their charity’s passion and mission,” Lasswell says. An endowment is a gift to a nonprofit organization, often set up so that only the investment income from the principal is used. This provides long-term support for an organization. Though end-of-life planning can be very difficult, taking time to consider what will be left behind is important. It can also make a big difference to the charitable, educational and spiritual institutions that make a difference in a community. Lasswell sums up the importance of these arrangements: “Planned gifts are often the last and most significant gift an individual can make to their favorite charity or charities.” BONNIE RUCKER

Give Your Time Millennials may be the generation struggling the most financially, but that doesn’t stop them from helping others. Life is often difficult for those in their 20s, and that’s never been truer than for today’s millennials. Bound by a lifetime of debt when they graduate college, many are forced to live at home while facing stagnant wages and a dubious financial future. The ability to cut a large check for charity and call it good just isn’t a reality for many of this generation, so many are finding something else to give: their time. Sam Dagnall of Tulsa serves with the Loaned Executive Program for the Tulsa 12
SOCIAL DATEBOOK | 2017
Area United Way, promoting awareness and working to reach fundraising goals. He began his philanthropic journey by making financial contributions while working for QuikTrip, a company that matches employee donations to charity dollar for dollar. Working for such a community-minded organization inspired Dagnall to do more. “Until I began to give back to the community and volunteer my time, I never realized that by doing so I can be a part of the solution,” Dagnall says. “My experience has been
unbelievably rewarding, and I only hope that I am able to be an example for those close to me, showing that anyone and everyone can make a difference.” Angie Aubrey of Oklahoma City serves as the chair of the Emerging Leaders Steering Committee for the United Way of Central Oklahoma. This group of young, civicminded professionals organizes such annual volunteer events as an Easter egg hunt for low-income families, a fall carnival for pre-kindergartners with special needs and a holiday dance for seniors. In addition to these activities, Aubrey volunteers year-round in other ways for the organization. “It’s important that I volunteer because of the impact it can make in the lives of others as well as the impact it has on my own life,”
0313 1 1019 Fabricut.indd SDB Fabricut.indd 1
Aubrey says. “It’s easy to become cynical when you skim the headlines and see only negative, oppressive and often tragic news happening all around us. Volunteering allows me the opportunity to see the light in the darkness and be a part of the positivity that we so desperately need.” Both Dagnall and Aubrey urge others to give their time for the local community. “I would encourage everyone to volunteer for one new cause a year,” Aubrey says. “That’s what I’ve challenged myself to do. It opens your eyes to the needs in our community that you might not know existed. It helps you discover where your passion lies, which makes a grueling day of volunteer work feel like it took no effort at all.” TARA MALONE
