A LITTLE WORD FROM US
EDITORS Paula Bevege
Welcome to a very special issue of Mr and Mrs. Not only are we celebrating 10 issues of our magazine, but our cover couple are a Mrs and Mrs. Ashley and Whetu had the most amazing celebration of their love, and we are honoured to have them on the cover.
Charlotte Wood .............. COVER PHOTO
We are also proud to feature a Mr and Mr. Read about the “classic, gay, glamour” that was Derek and Marks wedding at the iconic Wellesley Club, and attempt to keep feelings of envy at bay reading about their post wedding celebrations on the Amalfi Coast.
Sabrina Karin Photography
Read about Lucy and Ants “imperfectly, perfect proposal” and their wedding described as a whirlwind of “love and laughter” and hear Graham and Natasha’s story of marrying their best friend.
..............
And the love stories don’t stop there – each couple featured on these pages has their own wonderful story of love, commitment and celebration to tell. All as unique to each other as the weddings that our fabulous Wellington wedding vendors help deliver. Speaking of our amazing vendors, we want to take time to recognise all the businesses that make Wellington such an amazing place to hold a wedding. Also to acknowledge the feeling of family that the Wellington wedding industry has. Aside from being a close knit industry, many of the businesses featured on these pages, and at the show, are very much a family affair – and often start from a kitchen table. They may move to a garage – some branch out and take on new premises, but there is no getting away from that kitchen table – where many business decisions are made and discussed – sometimes heatedly, as the juggles of running a small business, with needs of a family often collide. The link between family, love, celebrations and weddings is an important one and one that we are proud to support through the weddings on these pages, the businesses, the family members and the couples that make the Wellington Wedding Show the experience that it is. In a time where acts of love have shone through recent acts of horror and terror, the importance of acceptance and kindness are more vital than ever – and the opportunities to celebrate these moments are more poignant than ever.

ASH & WHETU 20 / 10 / 2018
M&M: Tell us your engagement story A&W: So naturally both being women it’s not very obvious who is “supposed” to do what exactly. We both knew we wanted to (rather important) and each wanted to be surprised. In August 2017, after eight years together Whetu got in there first and planned a weekend away in Taupo where it would all take place. We drove up to Taupo in the afternoon arriving in the dark and quite late. Whetu later confessed she was hoping to do it on the lake front at one of the many picnic spots around the lake but the light had just gone from these spots. As a change of plan and now slightly panicking she just stressed that we needed to get to the hotel quickly (it’s up high and the sun was still going down in the distance). Whetu hadn’t spoken a word in almost an hour so Ashley began to suspect something was up! We made it to the hotel in time and there is champagne waiting in the room on our arrival. As soon as we got there Whetu immediately went outside to the balcony looking over Lake Taupo with the sun setting behind her and gets on her knee. It was the most romantic yet simple moment, just the two of us! Ash had purchased Whetu a ring a few months ago, knowing that she wanted Whetu to have an engagement ring straight away whenever the day might happen… luckily she had bought it on the trip just in case so within 10 minutes of arriving, we both had gorgeous new rings on our fingers. And a wedding to plan!
M&M: How did you select your wedding venue? What was important to you? A&W: Choosing the venue for us was more finding a venue that could fulfil our needs. There were some things we were very sure about when it came to what we wanted and needed. It was really important for us to be able to bring our own Furniture & Equipment (as Whetu works for Hiremaster), Caterer (because we knew we wanted and needed Trish for our day), Booze and could accommodate 160 guests plus plenty of room for a dance floor etc. When we went out to visit Wellesley College we knew it was perfect, as soon as we drove up the driveway there was our ceremony spot on the veranda in front of us and the beautiful “window wall” in the hall for the reception. M&M: What music did you play? A&W: Aisle; Can’t Help Falling in Love (Haley Reinhart) which was after the cars pulled up to My Love is Your Love (Kara Marni) Recessional; This Will Be an Everlasting Love (Natalie Cole) First Dance(as a surprise we sang with the band for our “First Dance”); Love Will Keep Us Together (Captain & Tennille) We also had a HUGE surprise when all of a sudden there was an Abba flash Mob! It turned out Ashley’s parents had arranged dance lessons for the 8 weeks prior for them and all of their friends and they did an ABBA medley… it was the most incredible surprise and we are still so shocked they pulled it off!
M&M: Tell us about your engagement ring A: Whetu’s engagement ring is a Medowlark Hexagon ring which is set with a Morganite stone and diamonds on the shoulder. Quite like her it’s not very conventional and very unique. W: Ashley’s engagement ring is a Three Stone Michael Hill Jeweller White gold and Diamond Ring.
M&M: Tell us about a standout vendor that provided amazing service A&W: Hands down Simply Food / Trish Perrins. The food was incredible (guests still telling us this), she and her team made sure that we had the absolute best day possible and were always checking on us both making sure we had everything we could ever need!
M&M: In 3 words describe your wedding style A&W: Contemporary, Glamorous & Classic
M&M: When your guests have spoken to you about your day since the wedding, what is the most common thing that has been said to you? A&W: We get lots of comments saying that “there was never a dull moment” also lots of great feedback on the Speeches.
M&M: What was the best planning advice you received? A&W: Don’t get too caught up in the details. Both working in events it was very easy to get too carried away playing around with the small things (even if we are passionate about them) such as what plates we preferred (we literally changed this 4 times) , sometimes we needed to just step back, and remember the point in the day!
M&M: In three words – describe your day A&W: Full of surprises!

LAURA & BEN 18 / 01 / 2019
M&M: Tell us your engagement story L&B: Ben and I both love Christmas so Ben decided to propose on Christmas Eve. We usually open a gift from each other on Christmas Eve – my gift was a ring! It was completely unexpected as Ben is not one to keep any kind of surprise to himself. Getting engaged at Christmas was extra special as we were then able to share our news with family and friends throughout the break before heading back to work a couple of weeks later.
items for theming like candles, candle holders, vases, cake plates and easels which meant we didn’t have to source then drive lots of bits and pieces over to the Wairarapa. Our friend Chloe Boerema happens to be a celebrant based in Hamilton and she was kind enough to officiate our wedding. She pulled together a perfect, personalised ceremony and delivered it flawlessly – it was so special. Our photographer, Billie Brook, and florist Sarah from Horrobin & Hodge were also amazing. M&M: Tell us about the dress L&B: I chose my dress from a Oui the Label trunk show at Paperswan in Kelburn.
M&M: Tell us about your engagement ring L&B: Ben worked with Naveya and Sloane on my classic three stone ring. It’s perfect and the team at Naveya and Sloane were amazing to work with.
M&M: Tell us about the suit L&B: Ben worked with Rex at Working Style Wellington on his suit – a black dinner suit with a pattern through the jacket.
M&M: In 3 words describe your wedding style L&B: Elegant, relaxed, rustic
M&M: Any special items on the menu or beverage list? L&B: We wanted to have a reasonably extensive drinks list so that people could drink what they liked – in addition to champagne and local wines and beers we served Pimms, Gin & Tonic, and a selection of spirits. We also wanted banquet style food as we like the idea of sharing a meal with friends and family. My mum and sister were keen to try their hand at cake making and offered to make our wedding cake. Rather than a traditional cake they made 6 smaller cakes all in different flavours – they looked amazing and were delicious!
M&M: What was the best planning advice you received? L&B: To book vendors you like and feel comfortable with – we did this with every vendor – booking those who we got on the best with or who came with strong recommendations from people we trusted - the result was an entirely stress free and fun wedding weekend. M&M: How did you select your wedding venue? What was important to you? L&B: We had quite a few people travelling in from overseas or elsewhere in NZ for the wedding. We wanted to spend as much time with our guests as possible so we decided to make a weekend of it over in the Wairarapa. When we started looking for a venue we were looking for somewhere large enough to comfortably hold at least 150 guests. We also wanted somewhere with reasonably relaxed sound restrictions as we knew we wanted a good dancefloor. Having managed events in the past I also knew I didn’t want to do anything too tricky that involved loads of vendors or any set-up by us. When we met Paula at Rose & Smith we knew we had to have our wedding there!
M&M: Planning a wedding is all about a little bit of give and take, what was the aspect of your wedding you wouldn’t compromise on? Bride, Groom? L&B: We were both pretty agreed on the fact that we wanted to throw a big party and we knew to do this we couldn’t compromise on food, beverages and great music. M&M: When your guests have spoken to you about your day since the wedding, what is the most common thing that has been said to you? L&B: Everyone has commented how perfect the ceremony was that Chloe put together, the incredible food, as well as the outdoor dancefloor which was so much fun.
M&M: What music did you play? L&B: Aisle - Follow the Sun by Xavier Rudd Recessional - Sunday Morning, Maroon Five First Dance - Brown Eyed Girl, Van Morrision
M&M: Did you have a honeymoon? Where did you go? L&B: We had 10 days in Bali leaving on the Monday after the wedding. It was so good to have time out just the two of us to relax and reminisce about the best weekend before heading back to work.
M&M: Tell us about a stand out vendor that provided amazing service L&B: All of our vendors were absolutely amazing! Paula and Dale at Rose & Smith went above and beyond with tastings, accommodating us with a relatively extensive bar, providing

LUCY & ANTS 16 / 04 / 2018
M&M: Tell us your engagement story A: We were heading up north for Christmas and I’d found a few campsites to break up the drive. L: ...and I’d always wanted to see the Three Sisters which were on the way
Recessional – For Once In My Life, Stevie Wonder First Dance – Flashback, Fat Freddy’s Drop (we met at a FFD gig in London) M&M: Tell us about a stand out vendor that provided amazing service Our caterers, Ministry of Food. Melissa wasn’t fazed by the sorry state of facilities, she shielded us from any stresses and our guests raved about the food.
A: Which got me thinking there might be a novel place to pop the question. Somewhere new - to both of us. The day of, I learned that the walk out to the beach was ‘a little bit’ tidal. L: ...we set off regardless, with the water quickly getting pretty high. Less than halfway in I had to take off my trousers and wade through in my bikini. Ants was uncharacteristically keen to push on!
M&M: Tell us about the dress L&A: Would you believe it was the first dress I tried on?! I did a bit of research online for local options and loved Sophie Voon’s style and ethics. The lace for her Viola dress is so unusual, I just loved it, and the only change I made to the design was a high buttoned back to show it off.
A: ...I was looking forward to not having to look after the ring! L: The Three Sisters were beautiful, probably even more so because we were back on dry land! When I turned around Ants was getting down on one knee revealing a ring between two shells! It was all imperfectly perfect!
M&M: Tell us about the suit L&A: Blue. A quick trip to Barkers one lunchtime, with some masterful adjustments by Topline Tailors.
M&M: Tell us about your engagement ring L&A: I was incredibly lucky, particularly being the youngest of three girls, to be given my Great Grandmother’s engagement ring. It was first passed down to my Grandma, so I have lovely memories of her wearing it. It’s a bit OTT with 5 old-cut diamonds set in 18ct white gold, but that’s why I love it, and of course that it has been passed down the generations. M&M: In 3 words describe your wedding style L&A: Casual, rustic, handcrafted.
M&M: Any special items on the menu or beverage list? L&A: An appropriately named ‘Jacko’s Shiraz’ from our friend Geoff Merrill’s winery in McLaren Vale, SA. M&M: Planning a wedding is all about a little bit of give and take, what was the aspect of your wedding you wouldn’t compromise on? L: Tunes and bunting. I ended up making 100 meters of it! A: Tunes and good craft beer from Parrot Dog and Garage Project.
M&M: What was the best planning advice you received? L&A: My best friend said ‘don’t scrimp on the photography because after the wedding that’s all you’ve got!’. M&M: How did you select your wedding venue? L&A: Ants is a member of our local sailing club, so we’d both hoped we might be able to wangle it.
M&M: When your guests have spoken to you about your day since the wedding, what is the most common thing that has been said to you? L&A: The best man’s speech. He decided to take it on its name and make it about the best man! The groom got a few mentions.
M&M: What was important to you? L&A: Somewhere local to us, with simple charm and a killer view.
M&M: Did you have a honeymoon? Where did you go? L&A: Hopefully soon. We now understand why it might have been wise to get hitched before having kids.
M&M: What music did you play? L&A: Aisle – A Sunday Kind Of Love, Etta James
M&M: In three words – describe your day L&A: A whirlwind, full of love and laughter.

DEREK & MARK 18 / 08 / 2018
M&M: Tell us your engagement story D&M: While we were travelling in Turkey in 2010 with friends, we had arranged a walk/tramp up the lower slopes of Mt Olympos, in Southern Turkey, outside Adrasan. Our route passed through Yanartas (Fire Mountain), an area of constantly burning natural gas flames. We got to the top of the mountain and there was a cairn of stones, added to by individual walkers over the years. Mark pulled me aside from the group and suggested we put our own stone on the pile. We did that, and he then proposed. The group thought we were arguing, but we were in tears for a much better reason. At the end of our walk we were picked up by our hotel host John. After being told what had happened, John called ahead to his wife Sue back at the hotel and she arranged for an engagement party to be thrown. We got back to the small hotel in our tramping clothes to be greeted by Sue and her staff congratulating us and then the party carried on by the hotel pool with all the other guests, dancing the night away. Part way through the night Mark presented me with a diamond he had been carrying from NZ, and by that stage he was very happy to pass on responsibility for.
M&M: What music did you play? D&M: Aisle – Mark walked in to the pianist playing Love and Marriage (theme song from ‘Married with Children’). Derek walked in to the pianist playing Diamonds are Forever Registry ‘At Last’, Etta James, 1961 version. M&M: Tell us about a standout vendor that provided amazing service D&M: Would have to be The Wellesley Hotel. Cathy and her team made everything easy, fluid, and took the stress out of it. She essentially became our unofficial wedding planner for everything that happened at The Wellesley and also gave us details of suppliers. M&M: Tell us about the suits D&M: We did not know what each other was wearing, kept it a secret and by chance we both ended up wearing tuxes. Mark had been teasing me that he was going to wear a caftan. D: Hugo Boss is one of my favourite suit companies, so my tux and all my whole outfit was bought from various Hugo Boss shops, Beverly Hills, Las Vegas, Canberra, Auckland and Wellington (Man to Man). M: Mark had his tux supplied and tailored by Mandatory in Wellington. The Mandatory staff looked after him incredibly well, and even added a black memorial band to his shirt, in memory of his Dad who had passed away a couple of weeks earlier.
M&M: Tell us about your engagement rings D&M: Mark did not want one, but I designed a ring (with a small amount of help from Mark) using the diamond Mark had given me as the centre together with other stones. M&M: In 3 words describe your wedding style D&M: Classic, gay glamour.
M&M: Planning a wedding is all about a little give and take, what was the aspect of your wedding you wouldn’t compromise on? D&M: Definitely the venue. It had to have the right feel, and The Wellesley felt like ‘home’ the minute we walked through the door. That, and the style of our day.
M&M: What was the best planning advice you received? D&M: Relax and actually enjoy the day. Not everything will go to plan, but you are the only ones who will know that. M&M: How did you select your wedding venue? D&M: Finding the wedding venue seemed to involve endless web searches and disappointing visits to potential places. Firstly, the venue had to be available. We wanted the wedding to be on 18.8.18 for its ‘memorability’ factor, being that in numerology the number 8 is lucky and is also eternity, our wedding date added up to 8. And for good measure we had three 8s in our wedding date, so extra good luck. Also we wanted to get married in front of a fireplace, as it was in August in Wellington, which really cuts down the options! Most of all, the venue had to feel like us and our style of wedding. The Wellesley fitted the bill with its great spaces and old-school glamour.
M&M: When your guests have spoken to you about your day since the wedding, what is the most common thing that has been said to you? D&M: ‘Best wedding ever’, and how everyone got on/had loads of fun even though they didn’t necessarily know each other, has been a pretty common reaction, but that’s probably what most guests say to the wedding couple. For us, it was about making sure our friends and family had a good time, and judging by the feedback, it looks like we nailed that one. M&M: In 3 words, describe your day D&M: Fun, Family, Friends.

SAMME & NICK 15 / 01 / 2019
M&M: Tell us your engagement story S&N: Nick and I were in New York on a bit of a holiday while on our way back from two years living in London. It was the morning of my 25th birthday, we were in Central Park and it was snowing and insanely beautiful. (I’m pretty sure right before Nick popped the question I’d said “this is like a fairy tale!”) We were standing on a slight slope taking a few pictures and as Nick went to get down on one knee, because it was snowy and slippery my first thought was that he was falling down the hill, I quickly realised what was actually happening and started bawling with happiness.
before, Rainer knew all the cool spots to take photos, and I’m so stoked with all of the pictures we got back. There’s so many special moments from the ceremony that Rainer managed to capture, most of them we didn’t even realise he was taking them! Nick and I weren’t overly comfortable in front of the camera, and were a little bit worried about the more ‘posed’ photos, but meeting with Rainer beforehand made us feel super comfortable. M&M: Tell us about the dress S&N: It was everything that I didn’t know I wanted when I first started looking for a dress. I wanted something that allowed me to dance and move and not feel uncomfortable, and Sally Eagle’s Audrey dress was definitely that. It was ivory, rather than white which I also loved, and I think suited my skin tone better. It had a really gorgeous bow on the right shoulder, beautiful beading detail on the top and it cinched in at the waist. The skirt was lovely and flowy too, which made for some really cool photos when it caught the wind.
M&M: In 3 words describe your wedding style S&N: I guess you could say it was a bit rustic? We took a lot of inspiration from the venue and chose decorations that would compliment it. M&M: How did you select your wedding venue? What was important to you? S&N: Nick is from the Northern Suburbs and it was somewhere he’d always thought would be cool for a wedding, especially as it was in his neighbourhood. We also had quite a few friends coming from overseas so we knew we wanted a venue that showed off our beautiful country. I think the main thing for both of us when picking a venue was that whatever venue we chose, we both wanted to feel comfortable there and picture ourselves getting married there. From the minute we first went to Boomrock, it was obvious that it was perfect for us.
M&M: Any special items on the menu or beverage list? S&N: With the last name Moore, we couldn’t go past having a s’mores bar. We were able to use Boomrock’s outdoor fire for the marshmallows and it was the perfect sustenance during the dancing portion of our wedding. M&M: When your guests have spoken to you about your day since the wedding, what is the most common thing that has been said to you? S&N: How incredible Boomrock was, how insane the photos turned out and how cosy & intimate the whole day felt.
M&M: What music did you play? S&N: Aisle – Today by Joshua Radin Recessional – Signed Sealed Delivered by Stevie Wonder First Dance – An acoustic version of Latch, by Daniela Andrade (originally by Disclosure & Sam Smith).
M&M: Did you have a honeymoon? Where did you go? S&N: We’re taking the month of April off and doing a bit of Northern Hemisphere travel. As well as going back to New York & London - both of which hold special places in our hearts – we’re also going to Canada and Iceland which have been on the top of our bucket lists for a while.
M&M: Tell us about a standout vendor that provided amazing service S&N: Our photographer, Rainer. We mainly wanted candid shots of all of our guests and Rainer really helped capture the essence of the day. Having photographed at Boomrock

OLIVIA & QUINN 09 / 02 / 2019
M&M: Tell us your engagement story O&Q: Quinn and I went to Europe for a holiday and he had it all perfectly planned to propose at parc de la ciutadella by a beautiful fountain in Barcelona. He took me around the side where it was more private said some beautiful words and got down on one knee. He did very well!
M&M: How did you select your wedding venue? What was important to you? O&Q: The Milk Station is just so beautiful as it is, little dĂŠcor was needed. Norbert was so lovely to deal with and so helpful leading up to the day and throughout the wedding. The venue had a very Tuscan style which is the feel we were going for, it truly felt romantic, and we both grew up in Otaki so for us it was a perfect fit.
M&M: Tell us about a standout vendor that provided amazing service O&Q: Simply Food were amazing! Trish and her team did an incredible job and all the guests complimented there food and service. We hope to attend another wedding that they cater in the future.
M&M: Planning a wedding is all about a little give and take, what was the aspect of your wedding you wouldn’t compromise on? O&Q: Neither of us wanted to compromise on food or entertainment. Shaun was incredible - he is very talented and an absolute showman.
M&M: Tell us about the dress O&Q: I purchased my dress from Felicity Bridal. I had seen the dress online and the only place in NZ at the time that stocked it was at Felicity Bridal, I flew up to Auckland to try it on to see if the style suited me and I absolutely fell in love. It was the only dress I tried on. I added the wings to it made it a little different to traditional veils, which I thought was a beautiful touch.
M&M: Did you have a honeymoon? O&Q: We decided to stay in New Zealand, we went up to the Bay Of Islands and then over to Waiheke which we both loved, it gave us a chance to relax and reflect on our big day! M&M: In 3 words, describe your day O&Q: Perfect for us.

GRAHAM & NATASHA 24 / 11 / 2018
M&M: Tell us your engagement story G&N: Graham is my best friend, we had been together for nine years before he proposed. We live in Wellington with our beautiful Bernese mountain dog, Jäger, and to me, that was more than enough, I wasn’t expecting the proposal. We were in Santorini on holiday, Graham suggested we watch the sun rise one morning. We drove down to an empty beach and just as the sun peaked over the water, he proposed. It was a great surprise and one of the happiest moments of our lives.
things with polite but military precision. I cannot recommend her enough. She went above and beyond – giving blankets to our parents at the end of the night and lighting candles in our suite. She is also just a lovely person. M&M: Tell us about the dress G&N: It was the first dress I tried on! I went on to try more but came back to it – I felt comfortable and I knew it was the one. My dress was a Spanish designed Atelier Pronovias gown. It had long sleeves and an illusion back and front, with a long train of lace and tulle. I wore Swarovski encrusted Christian Louboutin that sparkled when they peaked from underneath the floor length dress.
M&M: Tell us about your engagement ring G&N: A beautiful round brilliant solitaire, set in platinum from Tiffany & Co.
M&M: Tell us about the suit G&N: Graham’s suit was a custom made, Tom Ford suit from Harrold’s in Melbourne.
M&M: In 3 words describe your wedding style G&N: Romantic, elegant and intimate. M&M: What was the best planning advice you received? G&N: Plan and lock-in as many vendors as you can, as early as you can. The really good ones (like our photographer) get booked out almost a year in advance.
M&M: Any special items on the menu or beverage list? G&N: Ruth Pretty served a 12 course degustation menu, featuring New Zealand’s beautiful food. A highlight for many was the crayfish course, for others it was that they could choose from six homemade ice creams to accompany their dessert! Ruth Pretty also served her delicious rosebud cocktails. Veuve Cliquot was also a favourite for many guests.
M&M: How did you select your wedding venue? What was important to you? G&N: We selected Greenmantle Estate because it has beautiful, lush gardens, a secluded nikau forest and is an intimate venue (perfect for about 50-60 guests). It was important that the ceremony and reception were in the same place to make sure our parents and guests didn’t have to move about in between. We also selected it because the lovely owners, Ralph and Letizia Green allowed our dog to be our ring bearer.
M&M: Planning a wedding is all about a little bit of give and take; what was the aspect of your wedding you wouldn’t compromise on? G&N: For us, it was having an intimate and private venue, where we could provide excellent food and wine. I also love florals – so we picked a florist who we knew could fulfil our brief. Scent Floral Boutique ensured there were peonies and roses everywhere – my favourites.
M&M: What music did you play? G&N: Aisle – Elios String quartet’s rendition of Ellie Goulding’s ‘Still Falling For You’ Recessional – Elios String Quartet – ‘The Prayer’ First Dance – Luca Fogale’s rendition of ‘Home’ – original by Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeroes
M&M: When your guests have spoken to you about your day since the wedding, what is the most common thing that has been said to you? G&N: That they had a lovely time, felt full and that they loved the fireworks at the end.
M&M: Tell us about a standout vendor that provided amazing service G&N: We were so lucky to have amazing vendors – they were all brilliant but if I had to pick only one it would be our wedding-day coordinator, Sarah Topliff. I didn’t have to worry about a thing on our wedding day because Sarah was running
M&M: Did you have a honeymoon? G&N: We had a honeymoon in Fiji. We stayed in an overwater bure at Liku Liku resort – we had the best time. M&M: In three words describe your day G&N: Filled with love.

NEMANE & JACK 09 / 09 / 2018
M&M: Tell us your engagement story
M&M: What music did you play? N&J: Light jazz at the reception; we didn’t opt for a first dance, but had a dance floor open for later in the evening.
J: Once we had decided we were getting married we knew there would be some expectation that we would be engaged soon afterwards but we hadn’t yet found a ring. Not one for tradition, I told Nemane that she could always propose to me which she did soon afterwards one romantic Friday evening, using a piece of string as a placeholder for the actual ring. A few weeks later, once the real engagement ring had been bought, I took Nemane for a walk in the Wellington Botanic Gardens after work one evening, when we got to the gazebo on the duck pond I popped the question – almost dropping the ring in the pond! Some friends were hiding nearby to photograph us, and then joined us for dinner. This place has always been special to us as it’s where we first met and had one of our first dates – we also had some of our wedding photos in the gardens.
M&M: Tell us about a stand out vendor that provided amazing service N&J: Vanilla Images – These guys were amazing at every stage of our wedding journey! They helped us formulate our vision for the big day, gave us excellent planning & styling advice, ran the coolest photobooth, and captured and produced the best wedding photographs for us! We highly recommend this awesome couple. M&M: Tell us about the dress N&J: It is a sleeveless, mermaid cut, off-white lace wedding dress, with a semi-low cut back and mid-length train. M&M: Tell us about the suit N&J: A navy 2-piece wool suit with subtle blue check accompanied by a grey plaid waistcoat and plain burgundy tie.
M&M: Tell us about your engagement ring N&J: A traditional style emerald and diamond ring in 18ct yellow gold. A bright, square-cut emerald surrounded by 28 diamonds in a cluster and on the shoulders. Purchased from Walker & Hall, Wellington.
M&M: Any special items on the menu or beverage list? N&J: We wanted there to be something special to us so we had a beer from England (the home of the Groom), Pinotage red wine from South Africa (Bride’s home) and a well-oaked Chardonnay from New Zealand (where we both now live).
M&M: In 3 words describe your wedding style
M&M: Planning a wedding is all about a little bit of give and take, what was the aspect of your wedding you wouldn’t compromise on? J: I was very stressed about the first dance so it was decided early on that there wouldn’t be one. N: I had a very clear vision for the styling and insisted on gold cutlery as part of the place settings – although initially contested by the Jack, this was a great touch on the day.
N&J: Art Deco inspired. M&M: What was the best planning advice you received? N&J: “Make some time for yourselves on the day to take it all in.” M&M: How did you select your wedding venue? What was important to you? N&J: Good food was always high on our list so we chose to have the reception at a restaurant. However, the venue we booked closed-down 6 weeks before the big day and so it was quite stressful finding a new one in such a short time! After quite a frantic search, and with the help of friends, we eventually found Dillingers on Lambton Quay and we couldn’t have wished for a better venue. The management and staff were really helpful and were able to accommodate all of our requests, even at such short notice. The décor fit our Art Deco theme really well and the food was perfect!
M&M: When your guests have spoken to you about your day since the wedding, what is the most common thing that has been said to you? N&J: That the wedding was very “us”. M&M: Did you have a honeymoon? Where did you go? Rarotonga, and we stayed at Sanctuary Rarotonga – it was a perfect way to unwind after a busy few months. M&M: In three words – describe your day N&J: Perfect. Memorable. Us.

NATALIE & ANGUS 05 / 01 / 2019
M&M: Tell us your engagement story N&A: We were on holiday up in Northland and after a dip in the ocean we decided to climb up Mount Mania (Whangarei Heads). Angus decided to adventure off the track to this cliff edge with the most amazing views. We lay on the edge for a bit and after a while we got up and turned around to leave. When I turned back to look at the view one last time, Angus was down on one knee.
with no lace and thin straps… But after what I thought would take me months to decide on, I actually spontaneously went into Brides on Thorndon one morning with my mum and two hours later I had picked out a dress and paid the deposit. The dress is called Esperanza by Pronovia Barcelona and it is beautiful. It’s classy, elegant and very feminine, with a modern low back. M&M: Tell us about the suit A: The suit, and groomsmen suits, are from Barkers on Lambton Quay. It was the middle of summer so instead of a blazer, a waistcoat was worn with a bow tie, and ties for the groomsmen. The colour was navy with a white shirt, dark brown shoes and belt, and a blue and white pattern on the bow tie to match the colour of the bridesmaid dresses.
M&M: In 3 words describe your wedding style N&A: Fun and laid-back M&M: What was the best planning advice you received? N&A: Don’t sweat the small stuff, especially on the day itself. M&M: How did you select your wedding venue? What was important to you? N&A: We are both very outdoorsy people and the sea is a special place to us, so we chose to have it at a coastal location in the city where we met – Wellington.
M&M: Any special items on the menu or beverage list? N&A: Our drink of choice is tequila so we were drinking that all night! M&M: Planning a wedding is all about a little bit of give and take, what was the aspect of your wedding you wouldn’t compromise on? N: For me I couldn’t compromise on the photography or the location. A: For me it was important that my best mates from overseas were able to make it.
M&M: What music did you play? N&A: Aisle – A piano version of Can’t Help Falling In Love Elvis Presley Recessional – Signed, Sealed, Delivered – Stevie Wonder First Dance – Perfect – Ed Sheeran & Beyonce M&M: Tell us about a stand out vendor that provided amazing service N: Our photographer Caroline Atkinson. Documenting our day was high on our priority list, so we did a lot of research in finding the perfect person. Caroline did an amazing job! We honestly don’t know how she was able to capture everything from the start of our day, untill our first dance. We’ve had so many compliments on the photos we received from her. Her work tells the story of our wedding day perfectly and even after the 100th time looking through the photos I can’t help but smile! We would definitely recommend her to anyone. She’s also very lovely and easy to be around!
M&M: When your guests have spoken to you about your day since the wedding, what is the most common thing that has been said to you? N&A: That it was a beautiful wedding and a lot of fun! A few have said it’s been the best wedding they’ve been to which makes us happy to hear. M&M: Did you have a honeymoon? Where did you go? N&A: We took 2 weeks off to go up to the family bach in Northland and back to that special proposal spot, but we are currently planning our honeymoon for October where we will be experiencing Vietnam & Cambodia for 3 weeks.
M&M: Tell us about the dress N: I thought I was going to be really particular about the dress and had always imagined myself wearing a plain white dress
M&M: In three words – describe your day N&A: Best. Day. Ever.

HANNAH & ALEX 21 / 10 / 2018
M&M: Tell us your engagement story A: I’d been trying for weeks to find the perfect moment to propose to Hannah but my plans kept not quite working out. In the end we were just at my house having coffee and we were having such a great conversation that I got overwhelmed by my affection for Hannah and the feeling of connection and popped the question. I’m usually pretty patient but I couldn’t wait for the ideal sunset or whatever, to have her in my life.
Recessional – “For once in my life” Stevie Wonder First Dance – “Dark side of the gym” The National M&M: Tell us about the dress H: I was so nervous to shop for a wedding dress - I don’t really wear white, or like frills, lace or sparkles, so I had no idea how it was going to work! I was on a family trip to Sydney with my mum and sister and we found the perfect dress. Super simple, all the detail was in the fit and it was the most comfortable dress ever. It was a bit touch and go if it would arrive in time (it arrived the week of the wedding) but it was perfect.
M&M: Tell us about your engagement ring H: Alex chose a gorgeous hexagonal gold Meadowlark engagement ring, with a creamy morganite stone and diamonds surrounding it. I didn’t want a dainty ring, but that was the only hint I gave Alex, he chose everything else himself and had it made. It’s my favourite thing I’ve ever owned.
M&M: Tell us about the suit A: I wear a suit for work so I felt like I had to go one step further. I wanted a tuxedo and Clare and the team at Mandatory Menswear were the consummate professionals to make it happen. Clare had some great style suggestions which really took the suit to the next level and the fit was absolutely perfect.
M&M: In 3 words describe your wedding style H&A: Moody, personal, modern. M&M: What was the best planning advice you received? H&A: We had some really key pieces of advice that we tried to stick to when planning our wedding. 1. Decide on what’s most important to you, and spend accordingly. 2. Ask yourself “Is it worth it and why?” - it’s tempting to want to have it all but it adds stress and you want to feel good about everything you plan, so that afterwards you have no regrets. 3. Invite people who have been important to you in the last 10 years or who you believe will be important to you in the next 10.
M&M: Any special items on the menu or beverage list? H&A: Eating “family style” was something that was super important to us, as it’s something that we love to do with our families. The Catering Studio totally delivered - I’ve never heard so many people rave about the food at a wedding before. We also didn’t want to do a cake or plated dessert and went for an epic doughnut wall from sixes & sevens - they let us choose colours and flavours and our guests loved it!
M&M: How did you select your wedding venue? What was important to you? H&A: This was the hardest thing to decide, but ultimately set the tone and mood for the whole wedding. Wellington has a lot of great venues but none of them really felt like ‘us’ - we’re both city kids so a winery or a country venue didn’t feel like us, & neither of us had any strong feelings about a traditional church venue, but we both love architecture. In the end, Hannah was googling ‘cool buildings in Wellington’ and stumbled across the Futuna Chapel, which has an amazing story and a super dramatic interior. The venue was designed by John Scott, a Maori architect and it is described as a meeting of two cultures. That really felt fitting to us, so we went along and checked it out, and loved it. It’s certainly unlike any chapel we’d ever been to, but at certain times in the day the light beautifully illuminates the inside and it felt like the perfect place for us. The other details of the wedding; the invitations, the candle holders and other pieces were inspired by the lines in the Futuna Chapel.
M&M: Planning a wedding is all about a little bit of give and take, what was the aspect of your wedding you wouldn’t compromise on? A: I didn’t want to compromise on having a DJ. I love dancing (even if I’m not great at it) and just having a playlist from an iphone wasn’t going to cut it. H: I didn’t want to compromise on choosing the right photographers. It’s the thing that helps you remember your day and all the effort and love that goes into it. We were so lucky to meet James and Michelle, they captured the day exactly how we remembered it, plus so many gorgeous moments between our guests that we weren’t able to see on the day, it was very special. M&M: Did you have a honeymoon? Where did you go? H&A: Yes, we flew to the South island the day after the wedding and spent time tripping around Lake Tekapo, Wanaka and Queenstown – it was so beautiful and we’d been looking forward to going for a long time.
M&M: What music did you play? H&A: Aisle – “Stand by me” covered by Florence & The Machine
M&M: In three words – describe your day H&A: Most. Fun. Ever.
