A LITTLE WORD FROM US

COVER COUPLE Eylvie & Sean ..............

We are so very proud to bring you the 6th edition of MR&MRS Magazine, the jewel of The Wellington Wedding Show crown. MR&MRS magazine showcases Wellington weddings and our super talented wedding suppliers who produce them, many of them our very own exhibitors. We absolutely love every wedding we have featured, beautiful imagery and heartfelt stories that our amazing couples have shared with us. You can learn first-hand everything you need to know about planning a wedding through their knowledge and experience.

PHOTOGRAPHERS Amy Schulz Photography, Azul Studios, Billie Brook Photography, Caroline Atkinson Photography, Fineline Photography,

It is our mission at The Wellington Wedding Show to help couples create their wedding, uniquely for them, whilst having fun and enjoying the process. Our wedding show runs all year through our website: www.thewellingtonweddingshow.co.nz a place to go for top wedding suppliers and helpful tips and advice. And then of course our most exciting event of the year the Autumn Show. A day jammed packed full of fun, treats, demonstrations and most importantly being able to meet in person, and chat with the best wedding suppliers in the business. We also have some very special news for you with a very special addition to The Wellington Wedding Show team, Charlotte Wood of Charlotte Wood Events. Charlotte brings with her a wealth of wedding knowledge and has produced many of New Zealand’s most stylish weddings. We can’t wait to share our love of weddings with you, so stay in-touch.

I am so excited to be part of the team that makes up the Wellington Wedding Show. It has been a fantastic experience, and a very steep learning curve, working on this first show and helping to put this issue of MR&MRS together.

Jo Moore, Laura Ridley Photography,

So many things are better in pairs, Fred and Ginger, Gin and Tonics and not to mention Love and Marriage. Together we are committed to providing the very best advice and inspiration through our experience as Wedding Planners over many years (but we won’t tell how many exactly!). Paula and I bring different skills and design aesthetics to the Wellington Wedding Show, (think organised elegance vs chaotic glamour) and together the look we are working towards for the Wedding Show, and the extra events we will be hosting throughout the year, aims to bring you the latest wedding trends, for what ever the look and feel you are looking to for your wedding.

M&M: Tell us your engagement story…

M&M: What was the aspect of your wedding you wouldn’t compromise on?

E&S: We were flying up to Auckland to go to a concert and I remember him saying ‘Don’t forget to take off your jewellery, doesn’t it beep going through the scanner?’ and I walked through ahead of him and turned and said ‘Nope’. (I think he was recalling when we went to America the year before on holiday and I had to remove everything everytime. I didn’t know it then but he had the ring in his pocket and didn’t want to end up having to propose under the arch of an airport scanner) We had a beautiful dinner and went to the concert, Sean proposed later in the huge hotel bathtub. It was perfect for me, because I really dislike grandiose public gestures. I think I said/ yelled ‘YES!’ and the rest is history…

E: I really didn’t want to compromise on not having any cut flowers or cut foliage used in any aspect of the wedding. That and I wanted the wedding cake to be vegan. S: Lights. I wanted lots and lots of lights. M&M: The day of the wedding goes so quickly, do you have any advice on what to do to stop and enjoy the moment? E&S: The day can be gone so quickly, filled with good food, family and laughter. You really have to take the time to say to the person standing beside you. ‘I love you, thank you for sharing this crazy rollercoaster with me’. We went for a walk together and stood just outside the light of the candles and tables and looked back at everyone we loved and cared about, talking and laughing. It was magical and what it’s all about.

M&M: What was your inspiration for your wedding style? E&S: The inspiration for the wedding, was forest earthiness meets modern bohemian. I’m a bit of flower child and love nature and being amongst the trees with my bare feet on the earth.

M&M: When your guests have spoken to you about your day, what is the most common thing that has been said to you? E&S: They say it was very ethereal like an elven wedding. Or magical and unique. We aren’t very formal and I spent the better part of the night running around barefoot on the grass after discarding my sandles. It had a very easy going, light hearted feel to it. Like a giant adult festival of lights and food.

M&M: what was your most memorable planning moment? E&S: Memorable as in Stressful? Haha. There were a few of both. I remember being elated when we finally found a celebrant who would enable us to have the kind of ceremony that would be special to us and resonate with what we believed. I had some hilarious brainstorming sessions with two of my best friends. The most stressful things are things you can’t control, time, other people and the traffic you were totally not expecting on the SH1 to Kapiti on a Saturday.

M&M: If you think back to your day, what is the first moment that pops into your head? E: The moment I think about is when I turned and looked at him while he was eating beside me, he turned to me and smiled. It was wonderful, I felt so happy and so lucky to have met and married my best friend. It is what might be considered an ordinary moment. But in still loving someone’s smile and feeling happy with them in those moments, so familiar, it becomes something extraordinary.

M&M: What was the best planning tip you received? E&S: Breathe, finish that champage, cut that ribbon and have some chocolate. M&M: What did you include in the wedding that was uniquely you?

S: The moment I think about is Eylvie making me laugh just after the ceremony. I don’t recall what it was about but I do remember feeling relaxed in front of a large group of people, something that usually freaks me out.

E&S: We made the cake stands ourselves from beautiful slices of fallen macracarpa and branches we found. It smelled amazing and was a lovely thing to do with Sean.

M&M: In three words – describe your day

We had guests from Australia and the UK. We welcomed and thanked them in our speeches. It’s a wonderful thing to have people willing to travel so far to share one special day with you.

E: Whimsical. Intimate. Earthy. S: Enchanting. Ethereal. Exhilarating.

M&M: Tell us your engagement story…

B&K: Our main goal was to have a chilled, relaxed wedding and we got that for sure.

B&K: We were going to meet up at the end of Kat’s posting in DC as we had a year long trip planned. I went to DC a few days earlier without her knowledge. I’d organized with Kat’s brother to take her out for a drink at a hotel called The Jefferson where around the bar are all these little rooms. I went to the bar early and hid in one of those. The only problem was I turned up 2 hours early! Kat’s brother eventually told her to check out these cool rooms. When she found me I was sitting on a large leather throne holding my glass of whiskey. I slumped to one knee and apparently yelled, “Kat! I love you, will you marry me!?” To which she repeatedly said, “What the hell!?” Anyway, it was rad.

M&M: Weddings can often be more than the wedding day, what did you do to spend time with your guests before or after the day? B&K: We had our wedding on Kat’s family farm. Friday we had our rehearsal dinner and hired a chef and waitress to prep all of the food. On Saturday was the wedding itself and then on Sunday anyone from the wedding was invited back for a tennis tournament and pool party. It was a three day festival of BBQ’s and drink, really. M&M: The day of the wedding goes so quickly, do you have any advice on what to do to stop and enjoy the moment?

M&M: What was your inspiration for your wedding style?

B&K: We made the ceremony really short. It’s a surreal feeling having 160 eyes on you. On any other occasion you would feel judged or pressured to say and do the right thing, but on your wedding everyone is there to support you and wants to be there. We felt an overwhelming sense of love and security that we never expected, so cherish the ceremony, it’s very unique.

B&K: Because we travelled for our first year of engagement we were inspired a lot by the food. I looked at pinterest but found it quite repetitive. We were inspired by the venue and embraced that. Ben loves minimalist and I love whites and creams so those two combined created the look and feel. M&M: Did you attend the Wellington Wedding Show or read an issue of MR&MRS?

M&M: When your guests have spoken to you about your day since the wedding, what is the most common thing that has been said to you?

B&K: No. I didn’t know MR&MRS existed but I wish I had because I really like it! Darn where were you when I needed you ; )

B&K: Everyone loved the mix of people. We didn’t have any allocated seating, so everyone met new people and made new friends. A few hook ups too!

M&M: What was the best planning tip you received? B&K: Do it your self and don’t over complicate things, pass on tasks if people want to help. Then pass it onto a wedding planner on the day so you can enjoy it.

M&M: If you think back to your day, what is the first moment that pops into your head?

M&M: Did you have children at your wedding?

K: Us cutting the cake with a sword and then everyone starting to dance under the trees.

B&K: We had games to entertain adults and kids. We bought the flower girl and page boy cute outfits which made them feel special and important.

B: The ceremony and everyone looking so good! M&M: In three words – describe your day

M&M: What did you include in your wedding that was uniquely you?

B&K: Glad it’s over.

M&M: Tell us your engagement story…

P&J: We had our pug – walk down the aisle in a bowtie. We also made just about everything. The guests name cards were individually cut, sanded and polished out of wood. We made wooden frames for the seating plans and photos, grew succulents and moss for the table, designed the invites, RSVP cards and menus, made the table names, and the candles. Then just to top it off – leopard print. I love leopard print so my shoes and buttons on my dress were leopard.

P&J: Jeff and I went glamping in the Wairarapa to get away, in the middle of nowhere. Jeff and I were sitting outside when he lets out this sigh and says “there’s not going to be a better moment, wait here…” After 8 years, I actually thought he was breaking up with me! I was thinking to myself ‘unbelievable! What a jerk!’. When he came back he had a ring. With a green emerald which he said was for the colour of my eyes.

M&M: Did you have overseas guests? P&J: We were really lucky to have my uncle come over from Switzerland, friends from London, and Jeffs brother from Sydney, not to mention Jeff’s 94 year Gran who travelled from Auckland.

When he asked me to marry him, I was so confused that I said something like “huh? OK sure?!” M&M: What was your inspiration for your wedding style? P&J: A mishmash of styles and inspiration. We wanted it to be unique and fun. We took a little bit of 1960s vintage, meshed it together with a bit of whimsical, a dash of rustic, a splash of colour and voila!

M&M: What was the aspect of your wedding you wouldn’t compromise on? P: The venue. We booked it before seeing it in person. And once we met Su-an and her fabulous family – there was no compromise.

M&M: In the lead up to your wedding day, did you have any memorable planning moments?

J: Yeah, definitely the venue – We wanted a magical and unique environment, and that’s what we got at Old Forest School.

P&J: A couple of things came down to the wire. One was Jeff’s suit! I had a sleepless nights over that. I didn’t even see what the bridesmaids were wearing until the day, now that’s trust!

M&M: When your guests have spoken to you about your day since the wedding, what is the most common thing that has been said to you?

M&M: Did you attend the Wellington Wedding Show or read an issue of MR&MRS?

P&J: How unique and authentic it was.

P&J: Yes, and I have the photobooth photos on my fridge to prove it!

M&M: If you think back to your day, what is the first moment that pops into your head?

M&M: What was the best planning tip you received? P&J: We completely underestimated the amount of work involved in doing so much ourselves. Even though every detail was beautiful, on the day you don’t even pay attention to the tiny wee details, and neither does anyone else. Put time and energy into the stuff you really care about. For everything else… delegate!

P: Hysterically laughing in the back of a tiny Morris Minor, squished in with my bridesmaids and a pug in a bowtie. Driving down a bumpy road on the most glorious sunny day and thinking – this is just perfect. J: Standing by the car finishing my vows! M&M: In three words – describe your day

We were at Queen’s Park for a picnic when Mat asked if I wanted to go get an icecream. As I stood up, I turned to find Mat down on one knee. In front of my parents, my brother and sister, and everyone else in the park, he asked me to marry him. M&M: What did you do to spend time with your guests before or after the day?

M&M: Tell us your engagement story… P: This was all a planned surprise. We walked down to the waterfront and before sitting down, I gave Lauren a present which she thought was an early birthday gift. It wasn’t, it was a photo album book illustrating the road trip that I’d made to Masterton to ask Lauren’s parents for their blessing. By the end of the photo book, I was on my knee asking for Lauren’s hand in marriage. She said “yes” and out came the champagne. The evening followed by staying in an amazing room at the Hilton Auckland on Queen’s Wharf and dinner at our first date restaurant.

L&P: My bridesmaids and I did the usual things before the big day, then it was the final practice of our dance, rehearsal afternoon at the chapel and finally, pre-wedding drinks with the bridal party, their partners and our families at my parent’s place. The day after the wedding we organised a lunch for guests, kids and family friends. M&M: What was the aspect of your wedding you wouldn’t compromise on? P: There weren’t too many issues as we were both on the same page. Food is super important, so with Ruth Pretty on board it was simple. The whiskey bar was also something I couldn’t let go of.

M&M: What was your inspiration for your wedding style? L&P: Intimate, elegant and beautiful. M&M: In the lead up to your wedding day, did you have any memorable planning moments?

M&M: The day of the wedding goes so quickly, do you have any advice on what to do to stop and enjoy the moment?

L&P: We snuck away with photographer for some last minute photographs. It was the only time of the day where we were (almost) completely alone and were able to pinch ourselves that we were actually husband and wife.

M&M: What was the best planning tip you received? L&P: Everyone says be as organised as possible so you can enjoy the day. Since the wedding was in the Wairarapa I knew I couldn’t do it all on my own. Luckily, my mum and aunt were in full swing making sure everything was ticking along smoothly.

M&M: When your guests have spoken to you about your day since the wedding, what is the most common thing that has been said to you?

M&M: Did you have children at your wedding? If so, how did you accommodate them, any special considerations?

L&P: Beautiful - the colours, flowers, garden, the bridesmaids, groomsmen, groom and bride. They also always mention the fantastic food and wine.

L&P: Yes. We had many young kids, including 2 new borns. The girls had a ball handing out flower petals after the chapel service. Later on a babysitter picked them all up so the parents could have a night off.

M&M: If you think back to your day, what is the first moment that pops into your head?

M&M: What did you include in your wedding that was uniquely you?

L: My dad seeing me for the first time all ready to go, my brothers, my mum and finally Peter when I started walking down the aisle in the chapel, his face lighting up.

P: Seeing Lauren for the first time was an incredible moment.

L&P: Colour was a real highlight for our wedding. The chapel music we chose was beautiful, with two of the songs featuring on our wedding video.

M&M: In three words – describe your day L&P: Happy, blessed, loved.

A TO B:

M&M: How did you meet?

Two Helicopters

we meet the suit maker. He’s awesome and has made not only James’ wedding suit but other suits as well.

A&J: Both of us were at our end of year work parties and were at the bar of the Malthouse ordering Patron, when we realised we were ordering the same thing and got talking. I thought he didn’t like me on the first weekend we spent together – it turns out that he wasn’t feeling very well at all and was rather quiet because of it. But we got through that weekend and here we are!

M&M: Tell us about your best planning tip? A&J: Just do what you want and don’t let anyone else interfere. Our wedding wasn’t traditional – but that’s us! M&M: Uniquely you? A&J: All the leopard print!

M&M: Tell us about the proposal?

M&M: Tell us about what you did before the day?

A&J: I had seen a beautiful aquamarine ring in the window in Partridge’s in Queen Street ages before the proposal. Grant Partridge had sourced a diamond to be made into my ring (a similar style to the one I liked). There was some “diamond drama” but when we picked my ring – I knew that it was proposal time but wasn’t sure exactly when it was going to happen. James had made a huge effort – helicopter to a winery, dinner with friends, fun at the casino, a shopping spree at the mall … and finally, the proposal on the Colonial Tram Restaurant as we trundled through Melbourne’s streets whilst being wined and dined. Best weekend ever!

A&J: James and my Dad and some friends did guy stuff – clay bird shooting, pool, dinner and some low key drinks. The night before I went to Arbitrageur for dinner with my crew. M&M: What wouldn’t you compromise on? A&J: Doing it our way. M&M: What advice would you give couples planning to get married? A&J: Enjoy the moment. Relax! I had anxiety the morning of the wedding and I should have told someone (or drunk more champagne)! If I could change one thing it would have been to get a massage, force myself to eat & relax!!

M&M: Inspiration for wedding style? A&J: Every single thing on the day was just “us”. From the colours we picked (white, black, navy, gold and zebra print), to the leopard print table runners, the white roses, the champagne, the wine ceremony (where we had selected wines for three future special occasions, written each other letters and sealed them away during the wedding ceremony) and the people we had celebrating with us – it all celebrated our lives together. We didn’t have a bridal party, but we had our lovely friends as best-man, ring bearer and witnesses.

I made the call the day before to move the ceremony inside just in case and am really glad I did as I think it was more intimate and wonderful because of it – we had the fire crackling in the background for atmosphere and our lovely zebra print carpet - loved it! M&M: Thinking back to the day?

A&J: Everything was pretty easy as Charlotte did everything I wanted!!!

A&J: All I wanted was fireworks and James came through by letting me have them. We came outside following dinner to a path of sparklers held by our wonderful guests. We cut the cake and BOOM – the fireworks were all on and set to one of our favourite songs. It was the most amazing display I have seen in ages.

M&M: Did you attend the wedding show?

M&M: In three words – describe your day

A&J: Yes, I went the year before the wedding and that’s where

A&J: Ours, luxe, fizzing.

M&M: Memorable planning moments?

M&M: Tell us your engagement story...

We also had our page boy carry a sign just before I took to the aisle which said “Last chance to run Uncle Sam” It made coming down the aisle to so much laughter and smiles way less nerve racking!

H&S: We happened to be away on holiday, and walked past a gorgeous jewellers. I made a comment, that if he ever did change his mind about getting married that the ring in the window was my dream ring. Three weeks later he proposed with that exact ring and I of course said YES!

We also had a first look. We wanted to share the moment of seeing each other for the first time just the two of us. It was one of my favourite parts of the day. .

M&M: What was your inspiration for your wedding style?

M&M: Planning a wedding is all about a little bit of give and take, what was the aspect of your wedding you wouldn’t compromise on? Bride…Groom…?

H&S: A whimsical country garden. I love how everything is so loose, and rustic. I knew from the get go that the colours would be pale peach, blush pink, cream with a hint of gold.

H: The flowers – it was one of the aspects of the wedding I took the most joy in choosing. Also a good photographer.

M&M: In the lead up to your wedding day, did you have any memorable planning moments?

S: Groom: Music & really good food.

H&S: I remember having a vision for what I wanted our wedding to look and feel like. I found a venue which was only 5 minutes away from where we lived and instantly fell in love.

M&M: The day of the wedding goes so quickly, do you have any advice on what to do to stop and enjoy the moment? H&S: Just enjoy the day and let the little things go. It is such a special day, so take time with your Husband/Wife to look around and be thankful for all of the blessings you have in your life, including marrying the person of your dreams.

M&M: Did you attend the Wellington Wedding Show or read an issue of MR&MRS? H&S: Absolutely! I went to a couple of the Wellington Wedding shows, it really helped narrow down my vision, as well as meeting some fantastic suppliers all in once place.

M&M: When your guests have spoken to you about your day since the wedding, what is the most common thing that has been said to you?

M&M: What was the best planning tip you received? H&S: When you make a decision, whether it’s the colours, venue or food, stick with it, and stop looking. Do what you love. Some of the best weddings I have been to have been the most quirky and unusual!

H&S: We have been told my all of our guests how much they loved coming to a smaller wedding. We only had 55 guests which meant we could really spend quality time with all of our friends and family.

M&M: Did you have children at your wedding? If so, how did you accommodate them, any special considerations?

M&M: If you think back to your day, what is the first moment that pops into your head?

H&S: My nephews were page boys. We organised for a present to be on the table for them at the reception so they were occupied during the speeches and formalities.

H: Walking down the aisle and feeling so blissfully happy, and that I did not care what happened for the rest of the day, that the most important part was that I was marrying Sam!

M&M: What did you include in your wedding that was uniquely you?

S: Seeing Hope for the first time and thinking how lucky I was to be marrying her.

H&S: I had pictures of Dad, who passed away 7 years ago, attached to my bouquet, so as my brother walked me down the aisle, I knew I had Dad with me as well.

M&M: In three words – describe your day H&S: Intimate, whimsical, fun.

M&M: Tell us your engagement story…

THE KNOT:

Mr. Ussher

M&M: What did you include in your wedding that was uniquely you?

C: Many years ago when I was a young single man in the first year of Design School, there was this girl with amazing long red hair that caught my eye. We didn’t share any classes so I would only occasionally see her around and was way too shy to try and introduce myself. A couple of years went by, then at the design school ball we meet for first time on the dance floor (in fancy-dress).

J&C: We got officially (and secretly) married the week before on Valentines day at the registry office. Then on our ‘proper’ wedding day we had a very good friend of ours Mr Ussher perform the ceremony. Asking Mr Ussher to be our Minister was one the first and best things we did. He wrote the ceremony himself based on his many years experience of us, needless to say there was lots of laugher all delivered in a suitably official tone. The food was incredible, we had a very causal & fluid setup that encouraged socialising. We like our music, so made this a priority – Claire Terry sung us in and out of our ceremony, then had Radio Active’s Don Luchito keeping us moving through the night. Dion’s Amazing Traveling Photo Booth was a big hit too.

It took us a long time to decide we wanted to get married, pretty much did everything else first. I proposed on Valentines Day in 2012, which also happens to be Jess’s birthday – thankfully for the kids and I she said yes. M&M: What was your inspiration for your wedding style? J&C: Wes Anderson inspired Woodland wedding.

M&M: Did you have overseas guests?

M&M: In the lead up to your wedding day, did you have any memorable planning moments?

J: Craig’s Best Man and one of my Bridesmaids from the UK, and family and a Bridesmaid from Australia. It was very humbling to have people travel so far, and really made the day.

J&C: We had an amazing day trip out to Horrobin and Hodge to talk flowers and styling, Sarah & Wayne are the best kept secret in the Wellington wedding scene.

M&M: What did you do to spend time with your guests before or after the day?

M&M: Did you attend the Wellington Wedding Show or read an issue of MR&MRS?

J&C: We felt like we had a solid month of parties and get togethers. Most notably an unreal Stag-do tramping in the Orongorongo’s, and the Girls had an entire weekend in the Wairarapa enjoying great food, wine and company.

J&C: Yes, we’re part of the team really, we’re the designers working in the background for both the show and Mr & Mrs Magazine.

J: To delegate, which was hard!

M&M: When your guests have spoken to you about your day since the wedding, what is the most common thing that has been said to you?

M&M: Did you have children at your wedding?

J&C: A feeling of love & warmth.

J&C: In the years before we got hitched we discussed that if we ever did get married it would be when our kids were old enough to be part of it. Our venue was the Thorndon School Hall so all the kids were instantly at home and spent most of the time hanging out together in the playground or tearing around the fields. We also had a child wrangler onsite to supervise activities, food bags, games, etc, to give parents a wee breather.

M&M: If you think back to your day, what is the first moment that pops into your head?

M&M: What was the best planning tip you received?

J: Our first look, on top of a wind swept hill. C: The ceremony. M&M: In three words – describe your day J&C: Damn good fun.
