The event concludes as the contestants join hands on stage as they wait to see who will be crowned as Zapata Fair Queen. The queen is announced and anxiously awaits as they announce the runner-up who will join her court. The queen is crowned with her elegant crown and makes her way across the stage. B
eauty, grace and poise shine in Zapata’s auditorium as six local girls compete for the coveted Zapata crown. In one of Zapata County Fair’s most anticipated events, each young lady displays their unique talent. The most gracious cowgirls show off in glitter and glamour and of course their country-girl side. The contestants participate in a pageant with celebrity judges. Each contestant is rated on their appearance, fashion, talent and overall abilities. They dazzle the stage with beautiful evening-wear, and get creative with their talent. As part of the show, there is a dance number that features all of the contestants.
The judges then make a tough decision as to who of the beautiful contestants best represents the Zapata County Fair. The winner is crowned with a beautiful crown, with a 1st runner-up completing her court. The queen and her court are present at the Zapata County Fair and represent Zapata County in other area events such as the Washington’s Birthday Celebration and the Corpus Christi Bucaneer Days. Long live the queen and her court. These beauties are a great example of country, culture and citizenship that Zapata has to offer. Don’t miss out on this great event!

Throughout the past year, I have been truly blessed to have had the opportunity and honor to partake in one of the most unforgettable journeys of my life.
U
pon obtaining the title of Zapata County Fair Queen, I have established lifelong relationships, acquired a newfound confidence in myself, and have attained a love for service within my community and all of its people. This past year has been surreal, an unforgettable experience that I will cherish for the rest of my life. This entire journey would not have been made possible first and foremost with God, for He has provided me with the grace to serve you all under this title and I will be forever grateful. I would also like to express my eternal gratitude towards my parents for being my foundation of support of which stemmed from their unconditional love and their faith in me. I couldn’t have done it without them. Additionally, I extend a special thanks to Raquel Martinez, Elisa Lozano, Laura Moncivais- Cantu, and all of the ZCFQ Committee for being by my side throughout the entire journey. A warm thank you to Javier Menchaca, Ada’s Lace, Mrs. Dinorah Regalado and Sofia Regalado, Norma Gonzalez, Jessica Zamarripas, and Forever After. I would also like to thank my beautiful court, Shannon Lopez and Christina Landa, for being my best friends through it all. Thank you to the Junior Royalty for your poise and happy faces. Lastly, I would like to thank the people of Zapata County for bestowing upon me their unending support and kindness. A small piece of advice for the contestants: enjoy every moment of the entire experience, for although there can only be one winner, you all will walk out with something you didn’t have before, a newfound confidence and character of a fearless woman who can take on the world. To my successor: enjoy your reign and cherish every moment, for time flies when you’re having fun. Fully engage yourself, for the people and the experiences are truly unforgettable. This has been an incredible journey, and I thank each and every one of you for being a part of it. Farewell, thank you, and God Bless. - 2016 Zapata County Fair Queen, Gabriela Therese Gonzalez

In addition to being home to one of Texas’ best bass fishing locales, Zapata County also features rich history, breathtaking views of the Rio Grande from its bluffs, ideal birding vistas and rich history. Birding enthusiasts make an annual trek, setting their sights on the many bird species that call Zapata County home, including the white-collared seedeater, all in the hopes of completing their life lists. Zapata County was even a part of its own country, the Republic of the Rio Grande, a shortlived sovereignty that lasted roughly nine months in 1836. from the harsh cold temperatures up north. A myriad of RV pads and other amenities welcome these annual visitors who call Zapata County their second home. The county is also home to what many call the largest family reunion in South Texas, the Zapata County Fair. Generations of family members make the yearly pilgrimage to this venerable event to reunite with relatives, reminisce with old friends and make new memories for two weekends in March. Legendary Tejano acts, a show-stopping beauty pageant and thrilling rides make up this beloved of Zapata County’s events. 2017 ZCF Queen’s Contest Madrina
E
dula Ramirez Villarreal is a life long resident of Zapata County and has a deep commitment toward the improvement of quality of life of her community. The love she has for others and her sense of duty was instilled by her parents, Donato (+) & Maria Inez Ramirez through their support and encouragement. This attitude was evident during her high school years. Edula was in the mighty hawk marching band. She was in the volleyball, basketball and track teams. As an athlete she displayed excellent team work and sportsmanship behavior. Her agility and graceful demeanor earned her a spot as a cheerleader and on the Strutter drill team. An overall achiever who set and met goals, she was an honor roll student throughout the four years. Academics and athletics were arenas of growth and success for Edula. As a junior, she competed and was among the five finalists in the 1984 ZCFA Queen’s Contest. This experience proved invaluable in her personal growth into adulthood. Grace and poise are an integral part of her personality. Upon graduation she attened UT-PAU where she studied business management. Her preparation is an asset to her present day business. She and her husband both own and operate VPS and Cazador Lease Services. She serves as chief operating officer
for both companies since 2002. In her own words, “I am driven and committed to the oil and gas industry.” Her passion has been the force behind her accomplishments. She is married to Pepe Villarreal. They have two sons, Joey who is a welder and works for the family business and Danny who is a freshman in high school. Danny has followed in his mother’s footsteps and is actively involved in student activities such as football, power lifting and track. And has been entering livestock projects in the county fair. He also won the title of ZCF Little Cowboy in 2007. Another joy on her life is her grandson, Trey. Edula continues to work with the ZCFA because she believes in the values that children learn through their hard work and commitment to their projects. She and Pepe support the student projects as buyers at the ZCF. She also gave back a little of herself by serving in the Queens Committee. Her community involvement extends to sponsoring little league teams and contributing to the Lions Club and the local Head Start program. To relax, she practices yoga. This helps her health and gives her a sense of peace and well being. Edula believes in her community and strives to be a role model for the children of Zapata County.
