During this three-and-a-half day show, the Interior Design Show shapes the industry for the year to come—in North America and beyond. Nika Zupanc is an independent designer who works on projects that grow out of distinctive interpretations of modern culture, contemporary design and technology. Her pieces carry an emotional charge, with inspiration drawn from theatre and film noir. Nika characterizes her work as “communicating the things that cannot be told.” She has designed products for clients including Moooi, Sé, Moroso and Nodus. She has also done work on notable installations, including I Will Buy Flowers Myself (2009) and Gone with the Wind (2010), where she presented a collection of objects inside life-size doll houses, which became the hallmark of Milan Design Week, and Room Of One’s Own (2013) as part of the exhibition ”Esprit Dior: Miss Dior“ in Galerie Courbe at the Grand Palais in Paris. Along the way, Zupanc continuously produces objects under her own brand, Nika Zupanc, and is involved in numerous interior projects. Most recently, Zupanc has been working with internetbased plastic furniture brand Qeeboo, established by renowned Italian designer Stefano Giovanonni. Zupanc has also designed a collection called Take me to Miami, consisting of 6 brass objects, for new Italian brand Ghidini1961.

Spanish artist-designer Jaime Hayon was born in Madrid in 1974. His artistic vision was first fully exposed in the Mediterranean Digital Baroque and Mon Cirque installations. These collections put Jaime at the forefront of a new wave that blurred the lines between art, decor and design and a renaissance in finely-crafted, intricate objects within the context of contemporary design culture. Hayon further defined his vision in subsequent solo exhibitions and shows at major galleries and at design and art fairs around the globe. His wide client base spans diverse functions and mediums, including domestic furniture for b.d. barcelona, Cassina, Fritz Hansen, &Tradition, and Magis; lighting fixtures for Parachilna, Metalarte and Swarovski; and sophisticated objects for Bisazza, Lladró and Baccarat. He has also executed complete interiors for leading hotels, restaurants and retail establishments worldwide. Hayon currently resides in Valencia, with offices in Barcelona and Treviso (Italy). His work has appeared in the most prestigious art and design publications worldwide. He has won numerous awards, including multiple Elle Decoration International Design Awards, was included by Wallpaper magazine in its “Top 100” list and recognized by the magazine as one of the most influential creators of the last decade; and has been lauded as a “visionary” and one of the most creative icons by Time Magazine.
David Adjaye. IDS17 International Guest of Honour.
David Adjaye, OBE, is recognized as a leading architect of his generation. Adjaye was born in Tanzania to Ghanaian parents and his influences range from contemporary art, music and science to African art forms and the civic life of cities. His studio, Adjaye Associates, has offices in London, New York and Accra. His firm’s work spans the globe, with projects including the Nobel Peace Centre in Oslo (2005), the Bernie Grant Centre for the Performing Arts in London (2007), the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver (2007), and The Ethelbert Cooper Gallery of African & African American Art at Harvard’s Hutchins Center in Boston (2014), among others. His most recent work, The National Museum of African American History and Culture on Washington’s National Mall, is regarded as one of the most radical monuments of our time. The 400,000-square-foot building exudes every ounce of architectural impact as it does cultural significance—a true demonstration of Adjaye’s ability to dissolve barriers and accommodate difference through design. The material from Adjaye’s ten-year study of the capital cities of Africa was first shown in ”Urban Africa,” an exhibition at the Design Museum, London (2010) and is currently on display at the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco. The research was also published as Adjaye Africa Architecture in a five volume expanded version and single volume abridged version (New York, 2011 and 2016). He was the artistic director of ”GEO-graphics: A map of art practices in Africa, past and present,” a major exhibition at the Centre for Fine Arts, Brussels (2010). An exhibition of his architectural work, David Adjaye: Output, was held at Gallery MA, Tokyo (2010). In 2015 a comprehensive retrospective exhibition of his work to date was held at Haus der Kunst in Munich and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Toronto-based Heather Dubbeldam, OAA, FRAIC, LEED AP, is the Principal of Dubbeldam Architecture and Design. She is a fourth-generation architect of Dutch lineage. After living abroad and travelling extensively, she returned to Toronto to work with internationally recognized architecture firm Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg (KPMB) on many awardwinning private and institutional buildings. She is a licensed architect with the Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) and a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (FRAIC). She is a LEED Accredited Professional and a member of both Sustainable Buildings Canada and the Canada Green Building Council. Megan Torza, OAA / MRAIC / LEED AP BD+C, is a Partner at DTAH. Her portfolio includes numerous institutional and housing projects for public and private-sector clients including Toronto’s award-winning Artscape Wychwood Barns and the Evergreen Brick Works. She is a frequent guest lecturer and design critic in the Urban Design and Planning faculties at the University of Waterloo and Ryerson University, a member of the City of Vaughan Urban Design Review Panel, and on the executive board of the Toronto Society of Architects.

Martyn Lawrence Bullard
Martyn Lawrence Bullard curates sophisticated and inviting hospitality and residential interiors all over the world. His clientelle of Hollywood A-listers includes Kendall Jenner, Khloe Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian, Tommy Hilfiger, Cher, Ellen Pompeo, and Eva Mendes. Named one of the world’s top 100 interior designers by Architectural Digest, his work has appeared in more than 4,000 publications and 70 coffee table books including a monograph, Design & Decoration, to be released by Rizzoli this spring. He’s a seasoned television personality, having starred in Bravo’s Million Dollar Decorators, hosted the British reality program Hollywood Me, and made regular guest appearances on shows including Keeping Up With the Kardashians, The Talk, and Entertainment Tonight. From his Los Angeles-based studio, he creates his own lines of textiles, wallpaper, furniture and home accessories, and has designed collections for Schumacher, Ann Sacks, The Rug Company, Haviland Limoges, and has collaborated with Christofle and Daum.

Amanda Nisbet’s signature bold embrace of form, colour and texture has enlivened residential interiors in North America and Europe. She has an eponymous line of textiles and wallcoverings, and has collaborated on a lighting collection with The Urban Electric Company, a boutique rug line with Kyle Bunting, and a comprehensive furniture and lighting collection with Niermann Weeks—which inspired a sequential collaboration between her, Weeks, and One King’s Lane. Her firm, Amanda Nisbet Design, has been featured in several magazines, she is a frequent speaker about design. Her first book, Dazzling Design, was published by Stewart Tabori & Chang in 2012.

House & Home founder Lynda Reeves in conversation with Tommy Smythe and Darcie Watson Lynda Reeves is the founder and publisher of House & Home magazine and Maison & Demeure. A former interior designer, she writes and speaks about design and decorating on national TV and radio. Her team has designed and decorated the grand prize show home in support of the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation for the last six years. Tommy Smythe’s contagious enthusiasm and funloving approach to decor and renovating have made him an international design favourite. He has appeared on television, print media and popular speaking engagements. “Trends are not a focus for me,” he says. “I strive to create a feeling of timeless elegance and gracious living in soulful environments. Impatience is the mortal enemy of good design.” Darcie Watson is a licensed architect and registered interior designer. Her work includes retail and residential interior design, architecture, immersive sculpture, digital fabrication and electronics. She spent the past decade working on residential projects with architect Paul Raff, and founded Areacode, a small residential design practice. She’s now a senior associate with artist-architect Philip Beesley.

She has appeared on TV and radio, and as a guest lecturer at universities across the country. Joel Bray is the Design Editor of House & Home. He studied fine arts at Wilfrid Laurier University before attending Humber College for Interior Design. Scott McGillivray, internationally renowned as the star of HGTV’s Income Property, is an astute real estate investor, skilled contractor and accomplished businessman. His passion lies in educating people to make smart investment and renovation decisions. He’s the awardwinning TV host and executive producer of Moving the McGillivrays and Income Property on HGTV and DIY Network. He is a frequent guest of HGTV’s Home to Win and Urban Oasis, Flipping the Block, as well as HGTV’s All-American Handyman and Canada’s Handyman Challenge series. One of Time Magazine’s 100 most relevant creators, Wallpaper magazine’s Breakthrough Creator and two-time winner of Elle Décor’s International Award, Jaime Hayon will present his collaboration with leading quartz manufacturer and recently named to Dezeen’s Top 100 Design Brands, Caesarstone, at IDS17. Titled “Stone Age Folk”, Hayon’s installation is a whimsical universe inspired by the natural and mythical worlds, fauna and folklore. Studio North was created as a platform for young graduates, emerging designers and independent studios to have an opportunity to showcase custom work and limited-edition collections to a discerning design audience. This year, we’re excited to welcome over 50 international designers who are presenting an array of furniture, lighting, glass, ceramics, textiles and surface design in a gallery-like setting.
PARTISANS FACTORY. Voted “Best Emerging Designer” by Canada’s Design Exchange and “Best Emerging Practice” by the Ontario Association of Architects, PARTISANS is an intrepid Toronto-based studio poised to change the architecture and design landscape. To celebrate the launch of Gweilo, their custom line of sculptural lights in collaboration with LightForm, the firm is debuting the PARTISANS FACTORY at IDS17, an installation that melds making, play and performance. The LAMP award-winning light, which manipulates the dynamic movement of luminosity itself to architectural effect, will be hand-sculpted and made-to-order on site. Guests are also encouraged to luxuriate in a sitting room featuring special pieces by Le Corbusier and Frank Gehry, curated by Porch Modern.

The lab has been curated by: Pete Forde, CEO of itsme, is an acclaimed technologist, serial entrepreneur and open source community leader. Jim Estill is the CEO of Danby Appliances. He is a tech entrepreneur, investor, board member and author.
Ontario Wood. The Ontario Wood exhibition space showcases and promotes makers and manufacturers who work with locally-sourced wood. Framing lumber from EACOM’s Nairn Centre sawmill and sustainable aspen plywood by Rockshield EWP have been used to create a sculptural backdrop for furniture and lighting created by Ontario craftspeople. The construction material used in the space will be dismantled and re-used by Habitat for Humanity after the show. The space was designed and created by blackLAB architects inc. in partnership with Lewitt Construction, Moses StructuralEngineers, and Dark Tools. The Ontario Wood program helps consumers identify and support Ontario producers and makes buying local the natural choice.
