orewarJ In an age of great accomplishments and even greater problems, mankind has never faced his destiny with such imperative needs and with such limitless resources.

All mankind is reminded that stark poverty lives side by side with

abundance.

Freedom and slavery elbow one another among the people of the

world where men cannot enjoy the fruits of their own fabulous scientific in ventiveness.

They fear their own stupidity will turn invention into a world

shattering tool of destruction. Never have young people faced a future of greater promise and of greater threat to the security of mankind.

Knowledge will be lhe key lo this future.

While our future will demand less and les·s in the way of physical labor, it will demand more in the way of technical skills, social skills, social insights, pers·onal and psychological poise, and a much wider knowledge of the world and its problems. skills.

The modern world has been built upon physical and intellectual

Our usefulness in it will be determined by what we bring to it in the

way of an education. To share in both the opportunities and the responsibilities of the future we must invest time, energy, and money in educating ourselves for citizenship in the world of tomorrow.

A world where education will not only be the watch

word, but the requirement for both personal and national well-being. RON ROYE Student Body President

congratulations

to

staff for effectively capturing the spirit of the past year in

the pages of this annual. Each of us delights in

reminiscing, and there is, perhaps, no more significant period worth recalling .than those collegiate years in which the student is

finding himself

and developing

into a mature, perceptive individual. I would

also like to

congratulate the sophomores

who have taken a major step toward the fulfillment of their goals, and the freshmen who have successfully made '.he transi''.ion into the academic world. Grays Harbor Conege will continue to grow in suc ceding years and will oontinue to provide a challeng ing atmosphere in which both students and faculty can grow.

I

hope you will look beyond the photographs

and words in this annual and feel the spirit of Grays Harbor College, as I have. EDWARD P. SMITH President

On behalf of the Aberdeen

Superintenden'. of this district, it is with a great deal of pleasure that l extend my best wishes to you.

It is

my sincere hope that Grays Harbor College has ac complished its purpose of providing you with a quali·y educational program. One of the most beneficial of all local investments is in education and ·lhe expansion of this useful knowl edge,

The purpose of the Associated Women Students of Grays Harbor is to promote mutual understanding among the women students and to provide for their general welfare. The A.W.S., with the assistance of the Student Council, began the 1962-1963 year with Social Hour, when an attempt was made to acrtuaint the students with one another.

::i

Other

activities included s·ending cosmetics to the girls at Maple Lane, having a slumber party in the Hillier Union Building, electing eight outstand ing girls to be the Girl of the Month, and the annual Mothers' Tea in May. Under the supervision of Miss Jeane Jones, the Dean of Women, and under the leadership of the officers: Peggy Fields, President; Karen

Swanson,

Vice-President;

Margaret.

Hubacka,

Secretary-Treasurer; Sharon Branford, Social Chairman; and the d.istrict chairmen: Dana Davis, Pauline Gurrad, Barbara Smith, Joyce Yadro; the A.W.S. has completed another very success ful year at Grays Harbor College.

This year gave birth to a new club, filled with interesting ideas, the Choker ettes.

The club was organized to create the spirit. that i5· so badly needed at

the games, and lo and behold, it succeeded. Under the inspiring leadership of Bev Swartz, the Chokerettes were able to obtain a "Rooster Bus", a great an d successful idea.

This year's annual Homecoming was an event of great splendor and flour颅 ish.

We were proud to have Miss路 Ruby Stricker crowned Queen for 1962.

In

her court were the lovely misses Susan Kennedy, Tanya Pakonen, Peggy Fields, and Terry Warwick.

This event followed the annual football game between

Grays Harbor College and Wenatchee College. The court was entertained the previous night by many acts of talent from our own school.

QU<'<'ll Hnhy

This night was surely a night for our lovely court to remember.

The 1962 edition of .[he Grays Harbor College football team c'.osed i1is season on a losing note. In a habitually strong junior college circui,l, the Chokers finished up with a 2 win- 3 luss1 tie record. Grays Harbor lost two non-league games; one to a rough four-year college, and one to a semi-pro team. The Chok1ers stared out fast by whipping Everett 20-12. Halfback Sonny Luke and quarterback Archie Morrison led the high-flying offense. Columbia Basin, the nation's number one junior college football team, overwhelmed a stubborn Grays Harbor team by a score of 30-6. The ScaLllc Cavaliers extended their winning streak to 15 games by squeaking by l!he Chokers, 14-13. Sonny Luke ran well for Grays Harbor.

The Grays Harbor College track team has done an excellent job against many good teams.

Led by the two vers·atile freshmen, Rick Vanzandt and Tony Pasck

vale, and lettermen ,Jim Mahar and Mike Dickenson, it did a great deal to renew a sagging interest in track.

Coach Eldon Odle has done a fine job in organizing

the rebirth.
