Welcome to the Seventh Annual MCOY Awards THE AMERICAN SUBCONTRACTORS ASSOCIATION OF MICHIGAN (ASAM) welcomes you to the seventh annual Michigan Contractor of the Year Awards (MCOY). Within the construction industry, this is Michigan’s premier event for recognizing general contractors and construction managers with a track record of best practices, professionalism, and collaboration with the subcontracting community. This prestigious award has tremendous meaning because it only goes to contractors that operate at the top level. We are proud to have such strong contractors to work with year after year.
MCOY: A process and criteria that define excellence
T
HERE ARE GOOD REASONS why the Michigan Contractor of the Year (MCOY) Awards has become such a popular event— and perhaps the biggest reason is that the awards aren’t just about celebrating those contractors who have discovered the “winning formula.” Rather, they’re about improving the overall construction industry where the rest of us live and work. When the annual MCOY Awards were developed seven years ago, the emphasis was on how to improve working relationships between subcontractors

and contractors. The underlying intent is to support those who are doing a great job—reinforcing what they are doing while making it desirable for others to follow suit. The awards, by design, are not a “popularity contest.” Instead, they give the American Subcontractors Association of Michigan (ASAM) member an opportunity to nominate and recognize general contractors and construction managers who exhibit best practices, professionalism and collaboration with Michigan’s subcontracting community. More significantly,
The goal of the MCOY Awards is to build trusting relationships; the end result is a community of top-notch contractors and subcontractors working well together—with owners getting everything they pay for and more. the process educates our general contractor friends about how subcontractors and suppliers view the partnerships that are formed through construction projects. Contractors are nominated based on the experiences a subcontractor has with the general contractors they work with. The goal of the MCOY Awards is to build trusting relationships; the end result is a community of top-notch contractors and subcontractors working well together—with owners getting everything they pay for and more. ASAM set out to make a difference through action and self-responsibility; the popularity of the MCOY event is evidence that members of the construction industry have the same desire to play at a high level. ASAM members evaluated nominees for performance in specific categories that are essential to the contractor-subcontractor relationship. Each member company scored nominees in a confidential, defined process encompassing the following criteria: Bid Ethics and Practice, Safety, Jobsite Supervision, Communication, Schedule Coordination, Project Relations, Lien Process, Administrative Procedures, Payment Terms and Quality Workmanship. Bid Ethics and Practice: Does not make a practice of post-award price reductions from other contractors involved in the project. Notifies subcontractors of major discrepancies or obvious deviations related to scope of work. Ensures consistency as it relates to scope of work, plans and specifications. Safety: Leads the way in creating a safe jobsite by ensuring each site is clean, neat, organized, and professional. Provides written standards as it relates to jobsite safety and holds all of those involved on a project accountable to follow the standards. Jobsite Supervision: Projects are run well with minimal scheduling delays. Takes the lead in setting the tone for a positive jobsite where challenges are dealt with in a professional timely manner, individuals are treated with respect and dignity, and all are working together to produce a quality project. Communication: Questions and concerns are dealt with in a timely matter so as to keep the project moving forward. Communicates candidly, openly,
and professionally the successes and challenges to all involved in the project. Schedule Coordination: Accepts and incorporates input regarding overall project schedule and informs all affected parties in advance of potential challenges with the schedule. Understands the flow of the project, appropriately sequences the work, and holds all involved appropriately accountable to meet the overall job schedule. Project Relations: Approaches the project in the spirit of teamwork and handles all team members’ concerns and input in a cooperative, reasonable manner. Sets the tone for all to work together for the good of the project. Manages owners’ expectations and works to ensure that all contractors involved maintain a positive reputation. Lien Process: Respects the lien rights of other contractors involved in projects, provides the appropriate notices as a matter of practice, and does not take offense when this process is followed. Administrative Procedures: Processes and replies to requests for information, change orders, submittals, and other formal requests in a time frame that does not require the contractors involved on the project to take unnecessary risk or make assumptions that may later prove to be false. Payment Terms: Recognizes the importance of cash flow to the contractors on the job, and consisMCOY tently pays in accordance to the Committee terms agreed upon in the contract. Quality Workmanship: MainMATT FENNEMA tains standards for quality of work CHRIS WEAVER that meet or exceed the industry ANN PLUMMER standards. We recognize the general contractors and construction managers who meet the very highest standards — not only in their building projects, but also in how they work with the industry as a whole. We recognize the pursuit of safe jobsites for employees, best practices, collaboration, professionalism and continuous improvement. We applaud the general contractors and construction managers who made the final list this year, and we’ll toast the winner on October 13. How We Play the Hand
I
N LIFE AND IN BUSINESS, we are often encouraged to “play to win.” But as anyone in the construction industry will tell you, you can’t win every job. And not every job is a success. Some are failures. Cherish and appreciate those failures. It is because of those failures that the best businesses — the best, most awardwinning contractors — succeed. If your business never fails, it’s not pushing the limits. The American Subcontractors Association of Michigan isn’t honoring eight average companies that maintain the status quo. We have nominated the state’s top general contractors and construction managers, the ones who know they must often take a gamble in order to win. Construction is an inherently risky industry, and the idea of gambling in an already risky environment can be daunting. The Michigan market, in particular, has seen its ups and downs, and wild swings in the availability of both work and labor over the past several decades. But this is precisely why those of us in the construction industry must take risks. The Great Recession forced many of our companies to change
in order to survive. Contractors who didn’t adapt, take risks and embrace the potential to fail are less poised to succeed in the booming construction market we are experiencing today. I would bet that they are also less prepared to face the industry’s current labor shortage. Like the subcontractor members of the ASAM, the contractors we are honoring at the 2016 MCOY awards have no doubt been impacted by changing market condi2016-2017 tions. Even in years when the MCOY Nominees odds seemed stacked against THE CHRISTMAN COMPANY the entire industry, they have never folded. As the famous DAN VOS CONSTRUCTION COMPANY professor and scientist Randy ELZINGA & VOLKERS, INC. Pausch suggested, “We cannot ERHARDT CONSTRUCTION, INC. change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand.” FIRST COMPANIES Chris Weaver, Andy J. Egan Co., Inc. Vice President, ASAM

ASAM Endowment Scholarship
T
HIS YEAR MARKS THE FOURTH annual ASAM Scholarship. Founded in late 2012 ASAM joined Ferris State University and USI Insurance Services to create the ASAM Endowment and Scholarship fund. This endeavor is one of the many tactics that the ASAM Education Committee was established to support. The Education Committee provides students a direct connection to subcontractors and suppliers in the region. Motivated by a mutual desire to equip students with the knowledge of the contracting trades needed to produce effective and quality workforce in Michigan the Ferris State University College of Engineering Technology has formed a close bond with ASAM and the Education Committee. November 9, 2015, the President of Ferris State University noted, “At the benefit we announced the launch of the Ferris Futures Fund. This results from actions from both our Board of Trustees and Foundation Board regarding the $18 million refund we received from the Michigan Public School Employees Retirement System. First, our Trustees voted to give these funds to the Foundation with the interest generated to be used for student scholarships. Next, the Foundation Board voted to use these funds as a dollar-for-dollar match for new gifts to scholarship endowments over the next six years. The goal is to grow these funds to a $36 million endowment for student scholarships by 2022. This is a transformational moment in support for our students at Ferris State University. One year from now, the Ferris Futures Fund is projected to generate $720,000 for student scholarships. This amount will grow year after year, yielding at least $1.44 million in scholarships after the $36 million goal is reached. Currently our university has about $14 million in scholarship endowments. When we have met the projected $36 million goal for the Ferris Futures Fund, we will have increased our scholarship endowments to $50 million, generating $2 million in scholarships each and every year. This amount will only grow and generate scholarships
for even more students in the future.” Therefore, every dollar earned at the Silent Auction will be matched by FSU for the next six years, further impacting ASAM’s scholarship. This year’s scholarship recipient is Grenny Diaz-Ayala. Grenny Diaz-Ayala is majoring in HVAC Engineering Technology & Energy Management at Ferris State University (FSU). Scheduled to graduate in May 2017. Mr. Diaz graduated from Lansing Community College in 2014 where he completed his AAS degree in HVAC/R-Energy Management Engineering Technology with honors (Summa Cum Laude). He is an active member of the Mechanical Services Contractors of America (MSCA) and American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) student chapters. Grenny continues to be a role model for her fellow students. Last summer he interned with Honeywell Building Solution (HBS) in Houston, Texas where he had a wonderful performance. He was most of the time assisting the project engineer with new projects. Mr. Diaz is very grateful for this scholarship he received from us. Last year’s recipient, Layna Brown, interned at Clark Construction, where she worked at Central Michigan University on various projects. This past summer, she moved to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where she obtained an internship with a company that designs and constructs custom homes. Layna writes, “Thank you again for your generosity and your commitment to education by establishing this scholarship. This scholarship will undoubtedly help with financing my tuition. I am truly honored to have been selected and appreciate your kindness.”
Silent Auction AT THIS YEAR’S MCOY Awards we’ll be managing the silent auction through the use of the HandBid application. This will allow those interested in participating to bid on items through a secure application on their smartphone or tablet. If 10 MCOY 2016/2017
you do not have a smartphone or tablet we will be providing a tablet at the silent auction table. This functionality will notify you when you’ve been out-bid on an item and will also allow you to view which items are
available prior to the event. We’ll also be opening up bidding early. You do not have to be present to win! Visit ASAM’s Handbid’s page at www.handbid.com/ auctions/michigan-contractor-of-theyear-awards-2016/.

Dan Vos Construction Company Inc. WINNER OF THE 2015/2016 MCOY AWARD
I
N 2010, the American Subcontractors Association of Michigan (ASAM) named Dan Vos Construction Company their first Michigan Contractor of the Year, making Dan Vos the first construction firm in the region to receive the MCOY Award. In 2013-14 and 2015-16 Dan Vos received its second and third MCOY Awards. The company’s culture and values are based on a vision to be the most respected provider of construction services in West Michigan and to nurture constant learning and growth for clients and employees. It is built upon the Golden Rule: to communicate and uphold a standard in treating others as you would yourself. Through people, relationships and customer service, Dan Vos culture and corporate values remain at the heart of the company. According to Dan Vos, president and CEO, “We hear subcontractors comment, ‘Man, it’s good to be on a Dan Vos job again.’ Our people and culture are the reason we get these reactions, as well as a foundation for the criteria of a MCOY-type company. We are not alone among contractors in West
Michigan that have built a strong team and culture.” The company’s leadership believes that a person’s fit into the company’s culture is the most important aspect of their recruitment and future success. Skills can be learned and training can be completed by an individual who works well with others, upholds high standards and has personal values. As a result of their culture-focused recruitment and mentoring methodology, DVCC has an average seniority of 14 years. “The culture Dan Vos builds on the jobsite is what makes them stand out among the rest.” said Nathan Koetje, of Feyen Zylstra. “It’s a culture where all contractors are aligned, heard, and focused on ensuring the customer ends up with a great project, which is not an easy task to accomplish. Dan Vos works hard to build partnerships with the trade contractors by giving them a voice at the table, while at the same time, holding everyone accountable to put the needs of the project ahead of their own.” True teamwork between the Dan Vos staff and

subcontractors yields great results at the end of the day. They strive to work as if they were all part of the same organization. The subcontractors know what is expected in terms of quality and schedule. When differences arise, all parties know and trust that they will be resolved using a win-win approach. “DVCC’s commitment to doing things the right way, and approaching each project with an eye toward safety along with a truly collaborative style of work, makes them one of our favorite construction partners.” said Jeff Schipper of subcontractor Integrated Exteriors. “Getting paid quickly is an added bonus.” Subcontractors working with Dan Vos Construction, look for direction on the job site and Dan Vos relies on them for their specific expertise. An on-site supervisor is responsible to coordinate activities allowing for the best use of time and resources. Subcontractors can plan to show up on-site as scheduled, without the fear of lost time for re-scheduling or waiting. Having that confidence allows all parties to achieve good results for their teams as well as the owner. DVCC’s practices create an efficient delivery

system for the combined teams and the client. Trust, dependability and teamwork work in a full circle. Bruce De Boer, of Godwin Plumbing Inc., agrees. “I’ve always enjoyed working with the DVCC team because quality and integrity comes first, he said. 2016/2017 MCOY 23

They always deliver more than most customers would expect. The DVCC team truly values the partnership with their subcontractors.” Bid ethics and mutual respect are high priorities for DVCC and its subcontractors. The firm maintains
open and honest communication with subcontractors and they know they can count on the DVCC to keep their quotes confidential. Even in a competitive bid scenario when a quote is required 24 hours in advance, the subcontractors trust their quote will be kept in confidence. Management at Dan Vos Construction attempts to look out for not only the client, but the subcontractors as well. They often act as a safety net by thoroughly evaluating the proposals received and communicating concerns or questions, rather than just blindly accepting what’s been submitted. “Dan Vos Construction delivers every project through great teamwork and collaboration with their subcontractors. Team members are always treated with trust and respect. Working together as a team allows us to deliver remarkable projects,” said Justin Thrun of Van Dyken Mechanical, Inc. Respecting people’s time and effort whether it’s preparing a bid or working on site, creates long-term advantages for both the firm and client. Sometimes not asking for preliminary assistance with proposals from subcontractors allows them more time to collaborate on the project once it is further developed. “In a global marketplace where integrity is a rare commodity, we are fortunate that our West Michigan sector includes many members that portray a strong value system,” said David A. Sheasley of Architectural Glass & Metals Inc. “Dan Vos Construction Company is one of those member firms that exemplifies integrity in our marketplace and we routinely seek out op-

portunities to participate on projects committed to their leadership philosophy.” Dan Vos Construction Company builds more than buildings. Leadership believes that building relationships through honest communication and providing outstanding service is as important as the projects they construct. The DVCC tagline, “Building for Life,” means that construction is enacted with purpose, quality and durability in order to serve people and enhance life. The company’s reputation in the construction industry is based upon the dedication and professionalism of its highly skilled employees and subcontractors.
Dan Vos Construction appreciates an exceptional level of professionalism, ethics and partnership with the subcontracting community. Sharing these values allows DVCC to meet the unique needs of clients, from large manufacturers to small business owners, health care professionals, educators and community non profits, and surpass their expectations with innovation and integrity from start to completion. American Subcontractors Association of Michigan Celebrate 10 Years
“A
SA NATIONAL MISSION: The American Subcontractors Association amplifies the voice of and leads trade contractors to improve the business environment for the construction industry and to serve as a steward for the community.” 10 years ago a number of leaders in the West Michigan area recognized that the mission stated above by ASA was a perfect template for the collective voices of subcontractors in West Michigan. What started as a desire to create a fairer effort to collectively negotiate subcontracts steamrolled into a unified desire to change the culture of building projects to a more team based environment that included subcontractors, general contractors and owners. While much has transpired over the last 10 years within the chapter of ASA Michigan the momentum all started with a meeting between three men: Jack Austhof (Sobie Company), Fred Pylman (P&K Steel) and Mike Powers (Allied Electric) who recognized a need for a more even playing field. At the time the standard business practices regarding contracts and subcontracts within the Michigan construction environment lacked a transparency that we currently have today. Indemnification and hold harmless agreements were getting stronger and stronger, subcontractors were being required to sign subcontracts without access to all of the encompassing docu-
ments and had very little leverage to negotiate fair payment terms, recourse, etc. In that environment, subcontractors as a whole were operating as islands to themselves in trying to protect not only their business but the people whose livelihoods depended on longstanding well run companies as they were further dragged out by the tide of a disconnected industry. As a result of the meeting between those three men, a need for a collective voice and a shared responsibility was uncovered. From there, Jack Austhof, Fred Pylman and Jon Lunderberg invited prominent subcontractors to meet to discuss starting a Michigan chapter of ASA. On December 28, 2005, ten subcontractors and construction professionals met to form a steering committee to start the creation of the American Subcontractors Association of Michigan. The goal was to use education and problem solving for subcontractors to improve relationships with general contractors and owners. On October 26, 2006, the American Subcontractor Association of Michigan had its first General Membership Meeting. This collective voice of almost 100 companies evaluated subcontractors’ roles, shared best practices, improved communication and created a much more team-based approach to construction projects. In an effort to foster and grow that team-based approach one of the first endeavors ASA of Michigan embarked on was to

Ten years has gone quick. While ASA of Michigan is made up of hundreds of employees, business owners and suppliers, it runs on the work and the sweat of dedicated individuals who only want to do a better job, build better projects and better everyone around them in an effort to carry the mission of ASA to the finish line. interview area general contractors to find out firsthand what they wanted and needed from their subcontractor partners. The next step was to invite general contractors to ASAM meetings to introduce themselves and their firms and more importantly to build relationships to work together, work more efficiently and work more profitably for everyone. Four years later, in 2010, ASA of Michigan honored the first Michigan Contractor of the Year (MCOY), Dan Vos Construction, and on and on it has grown to the point where we have a well-established and wellfounded understanding between subcontractors and our partner GC’s and owners, we have a united voice as an industry to champion our collective causes and a firm network of people and businesses that rely on each other to build projects and grow businesses in the most efficient way possible.
