Welcome to the Eighth Annual MCOY Awards THE AMERICAN SUBCONTRACTORS ASSOCIATION OF MICHIGAN (ASAM) welcomes you to the eighth annual Michigan Contractor of the Year Awards (MCOY). Within the construction industry, this is Michigan’s premier event for recognizing general contractors and construction managers with a track record of best practices, professionalism, and collaboration with the subcontracting community. This prestigious award has tremendous meaning because it only goes to contractors who operate at the highest level. We are proud to have such strong general contractors to work with year after year.
MCOY: A process and criteria that define excellence
T
HERE ARE GOOD REASONS why the Michigan Contractor of the Year (MCOY) Awards has become such a popular event, and perhaps the biggest reason is that the awards aren’t just about celebrating those contractors who have discovered the “winning formula.” Rather, they’re about improving the overall construction industry where the rest of us live and work. When the annual MCOY Awards were developed eight years ago, the emphasis was on how to improve working relationships between subcontractors and contractors. The underlying intent is to support those who are doing a great job—reinforcing what they are doing, while making it desirable for others to follow suit.
4 MCOY 2017/2018
The awards, by design, are not a “popularity contest.” Instead, they give the American Subcontractors Association of Michigan (ASAM) members an opportunity to nominate and recognize general contractors and construction managers who exhibit best practices, professionalism and collaboration within Michigan’s subcontracting community. More significantly, the process educates our general contractor friends about how subcontractors and suppliers view the partnerships that are formed through construction projects. Contractors are nominated based on the experiences a subcontractor has with the general contractors they work with. The goal of the MCOY Awards is to build trusting relationships; the end result is a community of top-
The goal of the MCOY Awards is to build trusting relationships; the end result is a community of top-notch contractors and subcontractors working as a team—with owners getting everything they pay for and more. notch contractors and subcontractors working as a team—with owners getting everything they pay for and more. ASAM set out to make a difference through action and self-responsibility; the popularity of the MCOY event is evidence that members of the construction industry have the same desire to play at a high level. ASAM members evaluated nominees for performance in specific categories that are essential to the contractor-subcontractor relationship. Each member company scored nominees in a confidential, defined process encompassing the following criteria: Bid Ethics & Practices, Safety, Jobsite Supervision, Communication, Schedule Coordination, Project Relations, Lien Process, Administrative Procedures, Payment Terms and Quality Workmanship. Bid Ethics & Practices: Ensures consistency as it relates to scope of work, plans and specifications, and provides sufficient time to react to changes noted in Addenda, RFIs, and other communications. Respects confidentiality of subcontractors’ quotes and does not practice “Post Award” price reductions. Safety: Leads the way in creating a safe jobsite by ensuring each site is clean, neat, organized and professional. Provides written standards as they relate to jobsite safety and holds all of those involved on a project accountable to follow these standards. Jobsite Supervision: Projects are run well with minimal scheduling delays. Takes the lead in dealing with site challenges, professionally, in a timely manner, and treats individuals with respect and dignity. Provides sufficient supervisory manpower to meet project needs. Communication: Questions and concerns are dealt with in a timely manner so as to keep the project moving forward. Regularly communicates candidly, openly and professionally, successes and challenges to all of those involved in the project. Schedule Coordination: Accepts and incorporates input regarding overall project schedule and informs all those affected of potential changes at the earliest possible date. Understands the flow of the project, appropriately sequences the work, and holds all involved accountable to meet the project schedule.
Project Relations: Approaches the project in the spirit of teamwork and handles all team members’ concerns and input in a cooperative, reasonable manner. Sets the tone on the job for all to work together for the good of the project. Manages the owners’ expectations and works to ensure that all contractors involved maintain a positive reputation. Lien Process: Respects the lien rights of other contractors involved on projects, provides the appropriate notices as a matter of practice and does not take offense when this process is followed. Administrative processes related to the lien process, clear expectations and communications provided at the beginning with Notice of Commencement through the life of the project as it relates to payment, partial and supplier waivers until final waiver forms. Respects the subcontractors responsibility to protect their legal rights for payment from owner as well as a partnership with the contractor to ensure timely payment. Administrative Procedures: Provides a contract and replies to RFIs, Bulletin Quotes and other change correspondence in a timely manner, and requires all subcontractors to do the same. Does not expect the subcontractors to take unnecessary risks or make assumptions that may later prove false. Payment Terms: Recognizes the importance of cash flow to the subcontractors on the project. Provides a reasonable time frame MCOY in which a subcontractor can exCommittee pect payment for all pay applications. Releases retainage at an apTONY VERMAAS propriate time. Letter from the President
T
HE CALENDAR MAY SAY that it’s autumn,
but on September 27, it will like feel like March. We’re welcoming keynote speaker Tom Izzo to the eighth annual MCOY Awards. How appropriate that we’ll be honoring the eight elite contractors who excel at building successful teams in West Michigan. Mr. Izzo is known for creating stars within his industry—assistant coaches who move on to head coaching positions and players who join the NBA. The American Subcontractors Association of Michigan has this same vision for the construction industry. Through collaboration among suppliers, subcontractors, construction managers and general contractors, ASAM creates a network of strong leaders that betters the entire industry. The teamwork of industry players achieves what individual companies acting alone cannot: building lasting success for the West Michigan construction community. While there can only be one MCOY Award winner, the annual gala is an opportunity to celebrate all of the
companies that work year-round to improve our construction community. ASAM offers an impressive list of resources (such as the business practice interchange, construction membership forum, internship program, safety initiatives and other benefits) that are strengthened through the collaboration of our members. Whatever your goals in the construction industry, ASAM offers you a community to help you achieve them. You and your company have much to offer to ASAM as well. At this year’s MCOY Awards, let’s celebrate the success our community has already achieved and look forward to greater success together. Chris Weaver President, ASAM

“It’s been great that guys have bought into something, and I think that’s what they’ve bought into, the team concept ... helping one another, knowing they’re not good enough individually, but collectively, they’ve done an incredible job ... ” MICHIGAN STATE HEAD BASKETBALL COACH TOM IZZO (CBS DETROIT)
The MCOY: It’s all about teamwork
I
N THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY, one of the
things we talk about a lot is teamwork. Teamwork on schedules, teamwork on completing tasks, teamwork on solving problems, teamwork on finding a way to the finish line so that we can all succeed. Teamwork is an interesting attitude though. We can talk about it, push it in meetings or just hope it naturally occurs throughout the course of a project or our businesses. As Coach Izzo’s quote above states though, teamwork is something that needs to be something that we all buy into and bleeds through every piece of what we do each day. How do we find a way through collaboration and synergy to achieve the best results, while maximizing the talent around us in a way that is not only fulfilling for us but, more importantly, fulfilling for those around us. One piece of that “buy in” and how we recognize it is the MCOY Award. What we recognize here is who is succeeding as a
coach and why. Who is creating an atmosphere that involves all trade contractors from the beginning of a project to the end in a way that says, “You are part of this team. We are going to do this together.” That includes everything from the bid process to contracts, to schedule, communication, safety, payment, administrative processes, etc. Those prime contractors who are most successful at that philosophy are the ones we are recognizing tonight. So, while there will be one winner, each of the eight nominees should find pride in the fact that the trade contractors have recognized them as a coach who is striving to achieve these ends. Who is pushing to create an atmosphere where the team succeeds because of the “team,” not in spite of it. Who truly sees that there is no “I” in team. Tony Vermaas Vice President, ASAM

ASAM Endowment Scholarship
T
HIS YEAR MARKS the fifth annual ASAM Scholarship. Founded in late 2012, ASAM joined Ferris State University and USI Insurance Services to create the ASAM Endowment and Scholarship fund. This endeavor is one of the many tactics that the ASAM Education Committee was established to support. The Education Committee provides students a direct connection to subcontractors and suppliers in the region. Motivated by a mutual desire to equip students with the knowledge of the contracting trades needed to produce an effective and quality workforce in
Michigan, the Ferris State University College of Engineering Technology has formed a close bond with ASAM and the Education Committee. This year’s scholarship recipient is Christopher Oja. Christopher will be a senior at Ferris State University. With this scholarship he is able to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in HVAC/R Engineering Technology and find a job in either HVAC sales or project management. The ASAM Board and Education Committee look forward to seeing what opportunities lie ahead for Oja as he completes his degree and starts a career in the industry.
Silent Auction AT THE MCOY AWARDS, we manage the silent auction through the use of the HandBid application. This allows those interested in participating to bid on items through a secure application on their smartphone or tablet. If you do not have a smartphone or tablet, we have provided a tablet at the silent auction table.
This functionality will notify you when you’ve been out-bid on an item and will also allow you to view which items are available prior to the event. We’ll also be opening up bidding early. You do not have to be present to win! Visit ASAM’s Silent Auction page at asamichigan.net/silentauction for directions on how to download the HandBid app.

PIONEER CONSTRUCTION
O
RIGINALLY FROM the Netherlands, Earl Beckering Sr. worked his way to the United States of America as a carpenter aboard a ship. He eventually settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In 1933, the young entrepreneur founded Beckering Construction Company. From the beginning, Earl established a reputation for a strong work ethic, personal service, quality craftsmanship and a hands-on management approach. In honor of Earl Sr.’s legacy, these qualities continue to be the trademark of our company. In 1962, under the leadership of Beckering’s son, Earl Jr., the company name was changed to Pioneer Construction to reflect the innovative attitude and expanding services of the rapidly growing firm. In 1971, Earl’s son, Tom, took the reins of the company. Under his leadership, Pioneer Construction expanded to become one of the largest full-ser-
vice construction companies in the Midwest. Now in the fourth generation of family ownership, Tom’s son-in-law, Tim Schowalter, has positioned the company as a recognized leader in sustainable building, while maintaining our heritage of quality construction delivered on time and in budget. As the prime construction employer in West Michigan, Pioneer has a multitalented workforce of over 200 people. Many of our team members have worked with Pioneer for over 15 years. professionals, attended the Safety Week Symposium and participated in training courses that included first aid, CPR and AED, lift training and fall protection.More than 1,300 industry professionals have been trained through the Alive 365 program throughout the past four years. Thanks to the Alive 365 program and E&V’s continued dedication to the trade contractor industry, the National Trade Association, Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) recently named E&V an Accredited Quality Contractor (AQC). This distinction recognizes the company’s safety processes and reputation of success, further documenting E&V’s commitment to quality, safety, training, community and employees. The investment E&V has made in safety extends well beyond its own employees to all of its trade contractors, vendors, and partners. E&V recognizes that safe jobsites are more productive and produce higherquality projects. E&V is proud to set the standard for safety in the construction industry. Through diligence and unwavering attention to the company’s safety standards, E&V reached a significant milestone on May 15, 2017, and extended its safety track record to more than 10 years with no lost time injuries. To celebrate, E&V hosted a picnic for employees and families.
