LETTER

O

ur 8th year is right around the corner for us. We are celebrating Hell on Wheels with so many great people from industry folks, artists, musicians, spectators, and families. The feeling is overwhelming each and every year we get to throw this great event. We look forward to celebrating many more with you, and we can’t even explain how excited we are heading into another year of “what we do.” As we head into the fall season, which is one of our best seasons of the year, we look forward to slightly kooler nights. We look forward to sitting on our decks by campfires with good friends after coming off the road, and enjoying some great laughs on the memories made this past year... This month also marks more attention to an on-going ailment that continues to be one of our number 1 killers, cancer. We want to continue to recognize all the families struggling through difficult times. I want to say to several of my close friends who battle with this daily, though I can not imagine your daily pains, I will forever be a friend and loyal to your needs. I want to thank the Bearded Sinners for their enduring efforts to assist in their fight against cancer. This group has been recognized by us in the past, but we need to continue to support them and groups like them. We need to support real people and real issues, not large corporations that absorb over 75% of the funds to maintain a business. We need to support the families suffering. We need to support in finding a cure and a real cure to combat this ailment. Thank you brothers, for what you do and many around you. Your efforts do not go unnoticed. Also, this summer kicks off a slight change to our every anticipated BEST OF Awards, newly named the Ink n Oil awards. Read on to participate in this year’s nominations for an ever popular recognition of so many individuals and establishments for their creativity and accomplishments. We are reaching for several benchmarks this year. We have made some obvious changes to our layout. We are continuing to work on new ideas and we like your feedback. Please like us on Facebook; www.facebook.com/greaseincmagazine/ Make sure you stop by the studio when in the area to say hello... Tune in to Garage71 radio anytime while at work at: http://www.garage71.net/ or through various apps including Android and TuneIn. #iamkustomkulture #garage71radio @greaseinc

25y WOW Motorcycles

TH ANNIVERSARY

By Sales Manager, Glen Hauenstein

W

OW Motorcycles of Marietta, Georgia is celebrating 25 years of service to Metropolitan Atlanta, the state of Georgia, the United States, and the international community. Established in 1991 by Guido Adriaenssens, the operation that began as “One Man and a Van” has grown into America’s greatest independent dealer of pre-owned motorcycles, trikes, atv’s, and more. WOW Motorcycles maintains an inventory of well over 600 premium used motorcycles and provides a full service department, aftermarket parts and accessories, and more. The son of Belgian farmers, Mr. Adriaenssens gained an early business sense from his parents. This expanded to an international capacity during his years serving as a Belgian

diplomat, driving interest and demand for the products of his home country. What began as a side interest: providing American products to European interests, soon grew into a passion for establishing networks for international trade. Motorcycles became the center of focus, and shortly thereafter, a retail base was established in the Atlanta industrial area. Public response to the WOW business and service model led to rapid growth and the need for an international business

headquarters and increased retail space, which was located and developed at its current location at 508 Cobb Parkway North, in Marietta. The company continues to flourish and grow, now with over 40 employees working to provide motorcycles, service, shipping, parts and accessories, to the city, state, nation, and world. More information about the people, products, and services at WOW Motorcycles can be found at www.wowmotorcycles.com.

t must be in our DNA, our love of racing. Whether it is a foot race going back to ancient Greece, or efforts to circumnavigate the world in a sailboat, or Corkey Cofer’s The Great Race, we all are intrigued and captivated. Who will win? What record is broken? How fast? Second place gets ignored. The commercials and endorsements go to the winner, alone. The winners often become part of cultural heritage as well. The fasted time to cross the US from the Atlantic to the Pacific has been one of the favorite of all challenges since sailing ships. The first cross country challenge was taken on a $50 bet, by Horatio Nelson, a doctor from Vermont. He and his wife (and somewhere they acquired a dog named Bud) had a remarkable historic adventure. They arrived in New York City on July 26, 1903, 63 days, 12 hours, and 30 minutes after commencing their journey in San Francisco. The first real transcontinental race was a publicity event, as well as a contest. The first place prize (a very respectable $1000!) was put up by The National Good Roads Association and the Federal Department of Public Roads. Together with Olds Motor Works, two tiny 7-horsepower Olds Runabouts made a historic journey from New York to Portland, Oregon. These “motorized buckboards” reportedly were the first automobiles to run the Oregon Trail, crossing the US from east to west. The one named “Old Scout” won the race in a record 44 days! This was 1905! One can only imagine the challenges and adventure involved! Even Henry Ford took such a challenge. After his historic upset victory over America’s most famous race car driver (October 10, 1901, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan) he took on and finished first place in the "ocean-to-ocean" New York-to-Seattle race, sponsored in

10

1909 by Robert Guggenheim! It was great publicity for Ford. The Model T was only one year old and the challenge was on! However, this is all background to what is now the most famous and most copied cross country challenge, now referred to mostly as the Cannonball Run. In between 1909 and the early 1970’s there were a large number of similar events, many setting new records and new routes. Many were written up in newspapers and car & motorcycle magazines, as a number were on motorcycle, too. These caught the attention and imagination of writer and auto racer, Brock Yates. He recruited his friend and editor, Steve Smith. The first “run” was thought up as a celebration of the US highway system and to protest the 55 mph speed limit imposed in the early 1970’s by the Nation Maximum Speed. Yates reported that his dream was inspired by stories he read (and wrote some, too) about the travels of Erwin “Cannon Ball” Baker. Among many remarkable exploits (many involving his Indian motorcycle), in 1933 Baker drove coast to coast in a Graham-Paige Blue Streak, setting a 53-hour and 30 minute record. The average of about 50 miles an hour, much on dirt roads, went unbroken for nearly 40 years! Many ask where the Cannon Ball name came from, thinking it was a fictional tale from the popular movie. Far from fictional, it came from Yate’s naming his idea after his hero; the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash. He would refer to it as the “Cannonball Baker” but tolerated the more common title of “The Cannonball Run”. Please realize there was no “sanctioning” body or formal organization behind the Run. Yet it was run five times in the 1970s from New York to the Portofino Inn in Redondo Beach, California. The race had one rule: "All competitors will drive any vehicle of their choosing, over any route, at any speed they judge practical, between the starting point and destination. The competitor finishing with the lowest elapsed time is the winner." Beginning on May 3, 1971, Yates; his son, Brock Yates, Jr.; Steve Smith; and friend Jim Williams set off in a 1971 Dodge Custom

These “motorized buckboards” reportedly were the first automobiles to run the Oregon Trail, crossing the US from east to west.

van, named the "Moon Trash II,” setting a record at 40 hours and 51 minutes! You can only imagine the fun they had and they did write much about it, especially in Smith’s “Car And Driver” magazine, making it very famous among gear heads. The race was run four more times: • November 15, 1971; American racing legend Dan Gurney and Brock Yates, in a Ferrari Dayton, took 35 hours and 53 minutes, about 80 mph average. • November 13, 1972; Steve Behr and Brock Yates in a special built 1972 Dodge Challenger; 38 hours, 3 minutes; average speed, 76.3 mph. • April 23, 1975; Jack May and Rick Cline drove a Ferrari Dino from the Red Ball Garage in New York setting a new record of 35 hours and 53 minutes, averaging 83 mph. • April 1, 1979; Dave Heinz and Dave Yarborough in a Jaguar XJS set a new record, in 32 hours and 51 minutes (about 87 mph). Can you imagine riding and driving with Dale Yarborough? Wow!

GREASE INC. MAGAZINE

The record for official Cannonball Bakers was set in the final run; April 1979 and wasn’t officially acknowledged as broken until 2007 by the well-known Alex Roy and a banker friend, David Maher; setting a time of 31 hours 4 minutes in a “sweet blue” 2000 BMW M5. A film was made about this run titled 32 Hours 7 minutes. After the original Cannonball races were halted and the movie (produced by Brock Yates) was such a huge success for Burt Reynolds and a host of named film stars like Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr., a remarkable number of other efforts and copycat events have been held! Brock Yates will not approve the use of the name so all these copycats are outlaw copies, but no one seems offended. You can see that all these events, some charging large entry fees, are fairly costly endeavors. Yet the bragging rights, the thrills and out right fun times are legendary, and worth it all. Reading Alex Roy’s book The Driver: My Dangerous Pursuit of Speed and Truth in the Outlaw Racing World is a “must.” Now here is another surprising part of the story: the current acknowledged record (2013) is held by an unassuming young Georgia man, then a Lamborghini head salesman! It was a lifelong dream of Ed Bolian. He recruited the help of Dave Black and Dan Huang. Bolian set out without much fanfare with his two friends in a specially outfitted Mercedes AMG (incl. two added fuel tanks!), from the Red Ball Garage in New York on October 19, 2013 and made it to the Portofino Hotel in Redondo Beach, CA on October 20th. They made the trip in just 28 hours and 50 minutes, averaging over 95 mph with GPS documented proof! His book on this amazing and fun adventure is anticipated to be released soon; add that to your mustread list! How about a movie?

In between 1909 and the early 1970’s there were a large number of similar events, many setting new records and new routes.

Henry with Model T Transcontinental Race Team: The first transcontinental car race, from New York to Seattle, was held in 1909, & Henry Ford’s Model T won. The trip took 22 days & 55 minutes at an average speed of 7.75 mph. From the collections of The Henry Ford & Ford Motor Company.

own in the depths of Grease Inc. headquarters you won’t find much. Maybe some old furniture we threw out years ago, old posters of movies no one watches anymore, and tons of spiderwebs. Oh, and a dangerously decadent green-skinned dame by the name of Ghouella Deville. We couldn’t quite figure out what to do with her; she kept eating the electricians and plumbers we sent down there, and our vintage signs kept inexplicably going missing. So naturally, we decided to put some cameras down there and see what she would do. What we managed to drag back out was horror-hosting gold. “The pinup of Putrescence” is nothing short of marvelous in front of a camera. Equal parts sexy and unsavory, it feels like she pulls us in just to pull us apart!

Ghouella is the new name in horror hosting, a chartreuse ghoul with revolting open sores, and a revealing plunging neckline. She’s sewn together with only the best parts of ladies from a by-gone era. White Bettie Page hair, a dress ripped from Marilyn Monroe’s closet, and a pinch of the sharp wit of Mae West. We can’t help but wonder what must have happened to the poor sap to put those hand prints on her, but we have a feeling he isn’t around anymore to say. She’s already gaining a massive amount of credit and notoriety with not only her free youtube show, but with her live hosting events in the local Atlanta area, touring the south at horror conventions, a full color comic book series detailing her adventures, and an upcoming short film on how this mysterious oozy beauty came to be. She’s crawling her way from 6 feet under, to the very top of the Hollywood ladder, and we are definitely getting in at the beginning of this wild ride. So, get up close and personal (but not too close!) with Ghouella by viewing her youtube channel and checking out all things Ghoulish on her website at: www.GhouellaDeville.com We still may not be able to send anybody beneath the HQ building to fill in the cracks in the foundation, but Ghouella has certainly filled the cracks in our spooky hearts. Look for her when the sun goes down at Hell on Wheels! Photography by: Brooklyn Brat

ell on Wheels is excited to announce it's newest guest to travel all the way from South America, Phil Rocker!!! Once a year, Phil Rocker hits the west coast for an annual tour. He met the crew while in New Mexico two years ago and formed a friendship with founder and president of Hot Pan Productios, Inc., Brian L Whitcomb. Since, the two have been working on a plan to have Phil Rocker to play Hell on Wheels one year. That year is here! "Phil Rocker is the stage name of Felipe Ossa I am a musician from the city of Medellin in Colombia where I was born and where im still learning and growing, I play the guitar 17 years ago, my music background has the rock n roll from the streets of Medellin mixed with academy studies in instituto de bellas artes where i cursed 4 years of music studies plus the musical heritage of my home compose it by tangos, boleros, tropical music, salsa, pasillos and the artists, styles and periods of rock n roll that by own initiative I haver heard and listened as well as: santana, nick curran, ronnie dawson, social distortion, jump blues, rockabilly, hillbilly and my passion 50s rock n roll. As a leader and composer of a pioneer rockabilly band in Colombia (The Dorados) I have represented my country in Mexico and the United States in various festivals genre as rockcalavera and rockabilly on the route, my work has been reviewed by local media , media in Mexico and Latin American as a representative of the 50s cumbia rock n roll era. My debut album: VIVA-BOP!!! is the first step in the search for a unique sound that identifies me as a Latino and Rock n roller." What lead’s you to playing Rockabilly and living the Kustom Kulture in Columbia? I was 12 yeas old when I realized that music was my thing and i started to study guitrar licks from chuck berry and tbone walker .When i started to play guitar i love the vintage style haircut, outfits, music itself but in those days i didnt know thats it was a style but the first time that i watched

18

a rockabilly band perform i realized that the style that i have been loving since i was kid it was named Rockabilly, i think Rockabilly music is pure energy ,people is free and happy when listen Rockabilly for example in my hometown nobody knows what rockabilly is but it doesnt matter when i paly my guitar because its the kind of music that allow you to dance and jump and scream. Who are your inspirations? My music is inspired by my experiences , I think as a musician you have to be honest not to sell cds or shows but if you want to get fun if you want to connect with people you get to be honest about your music and your lyrics, i was doing drugs and alcohol for 20 years , i did my time in jail ,i broke bones and hearts and that was my inspiration in those days but i have been clean during 4 years because Jesus Christ set me free so my new release Viva bop!!!!!Its all about dance , jump and be free , Viva bop is not a religious album its more an ode to life , an invitation to dance because i fell free to dance and Jump thanks God. I admire Mike Ness from Social Distortion but my maín music influences comes from jump blues and 50s rock n roll I admire Nick Curran as a guitar player and I was seen Chuck Mead in Los álamos and I though where’s this guy comes from.

1201 Fox Run Pkwy, Opelika, AL 36801 www.bigswamphd.com

How did you learn this style of music in another country being outside the US? I toured around Mexico and United states i played with Eddie Clendening , Wayne Hancock ,i met Nicky Hill and fantastic chuck mead from BR 549 that kind of stuff is that i like the most from been in the road . When I’m touring I like to read a lot and i take advantage of my time to write songs , connect with other artists and try local foods. There’s two moments that I enjoy a lot when I’m touring one is when I talk with my kid the other one is when finally I’m playing on stage. It’s hard when you stay so long out of your house on the road but its my work. How exciting is it to travel the world playing what you love for people? What are some of your life long playing goals? My very next goal is found a record label to signed me up and help me take my music to the next level,I want to be recognized as a Latino Rock N Roller some one to brought something else to this beautiful music, next year I’m set for VLV20 and this is huge for me bearing in mind that I came from a country that don’t have rockabilly scene, I want to go further and set a huge tour thru out both west and east coast. My next step is move to the states and make people dance and jump with my Cumbiabilly. “Thanks to Grease Inc, Brian and Scott for spreading the word...” PLEASE STAY TÚNED TO WWW.PHILROCKER.COM

Happy Hauntings!

I

am thrilled that October is upon us! It's my favorite month of the year for many reasons. The weather is crisp, the leaves are turning, pumpkin spice everything is available, and of course, Halloween! In one of my recent internet Fall searches I came across this Haunted House Dress created by Clema W. I immediately fell in love with it! I knew it would be perfect for me to wear this season. With the quirky, fun print of this material, I knew I could switch it up from my normal look. The pretty purple background is perfect for showing off the haunted houses, flying ghosts, bats, smiling jack-o-lanterns, owls, moons, and more. I like the little pops of yellow for some contrast. The dress is 100% cotton and has a little stretch, but not too much. Make sure you measure accordingly when you place your order. It has a fitted bodice, pleated skirt, and back zipper. Clema W. makes retro-inspired dresses in Portland, Oregon. She offers classical and whimsical looks, so there is something for everyone! Clema was the name the shop owner's grandmother, who was the most inspirational person in her life, so it was only fitting to name the company after her. My heels are the Elsie Hairy Dots in gray and black from Lola Ramona. This heel is very comfortable and is a good height. The heel is rubber, lining is leather, and the upper is cow hair, hence the name hairy dots! Needless to say they are very fun looking! They also have a bow for added decoration. I wore my striped witchy tights to finish off this quirky look. My hair bow is by Deviously Sweet Designs.

This event is about giving back and saying thank you for all the years of support. Now it’s time to do so... We want to give Special Thanks to the following: The entire crew at Garage71: Rev. Andy, Erin RadioFox Watson, Brian P. We want to thank many of the local businesses who made this event a great success including: Goin’ Coastal, Downtown Kitchen, R&M, The Growler Shop, The Snug, and Mancini’s. We would like to thank all our vendors and sponsors. Without their inclusion, none of this could take place. We would like to thank the continued support of Blue Moon Cycle, Southeastern Customs, Kilowatts Creations, TattooTwisted, Dirt Class, Sensations Jewelry, 3 Stix, Liberty Barber Parlor, Ride Like a Pro, Mountain Man Beard Oil, Handy Hinch, Naughty Soda, Deep Eddy Vodka, Stars and Strikes, Lost Traditions, and all those who set up as local artists. We would like to provide a very special thank to artists: David Cook, who has created all the artwork for this year’s Hell on Wheels, and Tony Dinneweth for his creative touch to all our albums included in today’s special memorabilia. We would like to thank our musical guest artists this year including: Kevn Kinney of Drivin N Cryin with the Chattahoochee Coochie Men, Captain and Maybelle, Phil Rocker, the Blacktop Rockets, JB Walker, Uncle Daddy and the Kissin’ Cousins, Riot Act, and Cold Heart Canyon. Lastly, I would like to give a personal thank you to my better half, Kristen, our daughter Ky, and my family, including my mom Beverly, my sister Heidi, and my nephew Nikolas. Kevn Kinney

H

8:15PM - 10:00PM

ighly-acclaimed singer-songwriter Kevn Kinney is most widely known as founder and frontman of Atlanta-based rock band Drivin-N-Cryin. An accomplished musician, poet and painter, Kinney has released multiple critically acclaimed solo and band recordings during his career having also collaborated with Warren Haynes, REM, The Who and John Popper, among others. Kinney continues to tour with Drivin n Cryin and has simultaneously carved out a niche for himself as a solo artist. From the festival stage to the smallest house concert, fans are always excited at the opportunity to see him up close and personal in a stripped down acoustic setting. Kevn will release a new solo project in 2016. Kevn has sat in studio with Garage71’s Erin RadioFox Watson and has participated in several events with the crew, but nothing compares to the inclusion at Hell on Wheels. From original solo songs to favorites of the local great Drivin-N-Cryin, we are excited for this unbelievable addition and change up to our line-up. Hell on Wheels has always been known for an eclectic music line-up with much focus on Rockabilly, Psychobilly and Roots Rock. We search for a year to create an exciting line-up that we are just as excited about as our attendees. When we first approached Kevn for year 7, he had good reason to pre-book with us for this year’s event. Kevn Kinney received his induction into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and rightfully so! At that time, now almost two ago, Kevn committed that he would be at year eight and here he is!!!

The Riot Act

A

ll the way from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the Riot Act hits Hell on Wheels this October! This rock duo was discovered at one of the crew’s favorite winter time event in West Palm Beach, Iron and Clematis. “The duo hails straight out of a Quentin Tarantino soundtrack or an early 1970s house party, following in the path of old school garage acts.” Go and follow this rockin’ duo at: https://www.facebook.com/TheRiotAct.band/

Cold Heart Canyon

C

old Heart Canyon defies the definitions of Americana and Bluegrass with real Ameripolitan music. They’re a group of urban outlaws in touch with their roots, presenting music in a way that is not for the faint of heart. Cold Heart Canyon are some instrument swapping, foot stomping, swearing sons of guns. Edgy, eclectic, and energetic, CHC takes a twisted stab at tradition with an added dark sound that’s raw and rowdy, yet refined.

3:15PM - 4:15PM

JB Walker

O

ver 30 years in the industry, a very familiar performer to the Southern motorcycle scene, JB Walker plays Hell on Wheels. We have known JB for years, and his most notarized performances for his main-stage appearances at the famous Iron Horse Saloon in Daytona Beach during Bike Week with names like David Allen Coe, Jasmine Cain, Jesse James Dupree and more! JB Walker has sat in on many of a show with Garage71’s Erin RadioFox Watson on Tuesday nights. It is always a great way to sit back and enjoy an evening of great rock n roll, played from the soul. You can catch JB at one of his favorite local spots, B3 Bar and Grill. JB Walker will be playing a special acoustic set at Hell on Wheels. JB plans to play a lot of our favorites, but in an acoustic twist and sound. Only JB can be the guy for this type of show to captivate such a large crowd with years of experience and talent.

1:30PM - 2:30PM

Uncle Daddy and the Kissin’ Cousins

“U

ncle Daddy and the Kissin’ Cousins are a novelty bluegrass act that really impressed me. I thought their music was just going to be all slapstick and not substance, but I’ll be damned if all six of them aren’t incredible musicians. I grew up listening to traditional country and bluegrass, so I’m kind of a critic/snob of this genre, but the Kissin’ Cousins delivered big time. Among their original songs, they also did a great cover of Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away” and another tune that was vaguely psychedelic.”
