It is always my privilege to be invited to speak on behalf of the Community Foundation. I am honored to share the amazing impact being achieved in our communities, thanks to your generous spirit. If you have heard me speak recently, you have heard me share my favorite quote from President Theodore Roosevelt in which he said, “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” I share these words of wisdom because they remind me of the charitable spirit I witness every day. You are most certainly doing what you can to better your communities and the causes you love. And we are honored to partner with you in making it all happen.

Thanks to your generous support of the causes you care about, 2016 was a record-breaking year. Collectively, you granted over $29.4 million from charitable giving funds at the Community Foundation to causes you care about. Each of these dollars represents your passion and commitment to strengthening our communities. You are truly doing what you can, with what you have, where you are. In the past year alone, over $62.6 million in gifts were made to charitable giving funds at the Community Foundation. This tremendous charitable spirit represents the vision and hopes you have for our communities, and the needs you will continue to meet for generations to come. At the Community Foundation, we are committed to the continued success of the communities we serve. This past year we provided $560,000 to six organizations through Leadership Grants, funded by the Better Together Fund. While addressing the needs of today, we are also looking ahead to the needs of tomorrow. Whether launching the five-year vision plan for our region through Capital Crossroads 2.0 or bringing community leaders around the table to address persistent systemic challenges, we believe that strong communities start with a strong foundation. CONNECTIONS THAT COUNT Dr. Cathann Kress understands communities have unique needs. That is why when she became a trustee with the W.K. Kellogg Foundation; she contacted the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines to help her in her work. “As I began my grantmaking, I was looking for a partner that could be flexible and help me support a broad range of interests. I was delighted to find that in the Community Foundation,” shares Cathann. When Cathann shared her interest in supporting at-risk children, the Community Foundation's staff connected her with Blank Children’s Hospital’s Foster Care Clinic. “It is my privilege to support the Foster Care Clinic and its innovative approach to care. The clinic provides a safety net for these children in need and makes one important part of their life a bit easier.”

As Jennifer Boeding, Foster Care Clinic director, shares, “Foster families have to navigate a huge system when they welcome a child into their family, and it can be very time intensive.” In response hospital leaders and community partners came together to create a comprehensive approach to care for our young neighbors. “We are providing well-child visits in a very special way for this population. Thanks to more frequent visits to the clinic, we are bringing pediatricians and mental healthcare professionals together to serve our children well.” Says Jennifer, “Without the Community Foundation’s connection and Cathann’s support, we would not have been able to open a clinic that offers such comprehensive and specialized care. This clinic is a game changer for our communities’ foster families and the children we are privileged to care for.”

With an infectious smile and fun-loving spirit, Charlie Cutler was committed to living life with purpose, passion and compassion. Whether crossing the state on his bike during epic RAGRBRAI journeys or thinking ahead to the next adventurous trip with family and friends, Charlie lived each day to its fullest and brought others along for the ride. When Charlie passed away from cancer, his large circle of family and friends sought to honor his extraordinary spirit. They wanted to celebrate Charlie’s life, and continue his legacy of hope and positivity. In response, Charlie’s parents, Diane and Chuck, established the Charlie Cutler Charitable Fund at the Community Foundation as a way to manage the tremendous outpouring of support. By establishing a fund at the Community Foundation, the family has a trusted, local partner to ensure that the funds are well administered until they feel it is the right time to begin making gifts. This thoughtful approach has provided the family the opportunity to support projects and organizations that match Charlie’s passions, and continue his legacy for years to come.
Through this fund at the Community Foundation, we can ensure that Charlie’s lasting legacy of positivity and strength will be used to help others. Charlie had a huge smile, and taught us a lot about seeing the possibilities in each and every day. It is our privilege to support organizations that spread that kind of joy and hope in the world.

A VISION FORWARD It is often said that the best way to predict the future is to create it, a philosophy that continues to inspire Central Iowans to dream big and plan for tomorrow. This commitment to continued success drove the Community Foundation, and fellow sponsor organizations, to develop Capital Crossroads as a vision plan for Central Iowa in 2012. Capital Crossroads has not been a report on a shelf, but rather a catalyst for collectively addressing real challenges and opportunities in our communities through the efforts of nearly 700 volunteers. While the list of over 400 successes from Capital Crossroads proves impressive, the work continues. Capital Crossroads 2.0 was released in February 2017 thanks to the community’s identification of emerging needs, opportunities and trends. The Community Foundation is proud to support this work as not only a sponsor and partner organization, but as a community leader.

“It is the essential belief of Capital Crossroads that change is built upon connections, passion, and by working with the community,” shares Dr. Glennda Bivens, a Social Capital tri-chair. As one of 10 capitals identified in Capital Crossroads 2.0, the Social Capital team has been tasked with ensuring all voices are instrumental in identifying and working towards community needs. “In striving to bring the entire region to the table, we must develop a framework that prioritizes equity and inclusion as we create change. We are strengthened by our differences and enriched by our diversity.”

As Justin Mandelbaum prepared to launch Mainframe Studios, a permanent affordable workspace for artists, he came to the Community Foundation. “We had a very short window of time to purchase 900 Keosauqua Way for Mainframe Studios and were in need of support. Thanks to the generosity of the Community Foundation’s Leadership Circle, and the insight of the organization’s staff, we secured the first dollars needed to acquire the building and push our development plans of this community asset forward.”

Justin and Li Mandelbaum are growing their giving through a Community Foundation Seed Fund.
In this moment Justin and his wife Li saw first-hand the impact of the Community Foundation and became determined to pay it forward. “Li and I decided that we wanted to someday be in the position to create impact for future generations. We had assumed starting a charitable giving fund at the Community Foundation required a six-figure contribution, but we learned this is not the case. If you hope to get involved in the community, this is an easy way to start.” The couple opened a Seed Fund to build their charitable giving fund over time. Once their Seed Fund matures, grants can begin to be made. For the Mandelbaums the value of having a charitable giving fund at the Community Foundation goes beyond growing assets. As Justin shared, “The Community Foundation is critical to the fabric of our community. Their work is made possible thanks to those who have chosen to support local leadership by investing their charitable assets with the organization, and we are proud to play a part."

TRUST FOR TOMORROW Partnering with the Community Foundation had always been on Deb and Jim Israel’s to-do list, but it took the right moment to move their plan into action. “At Thanksgiving our son gave each family member an envelope with a gift of money inside. He encouraged us to give the money away and report back to the family at Christmas. It was at that point we realized our family understood the importance of giving back, and we needed to formalize a way to help them do so,” shares Deb. The couple came to the Community Foundation with two goals; encourage their children’s passion for giving and provide targeted support for a variety of organizations they care about. One organization is the University of Iowa; where the Israels met on their first day as students, and where their sons subsequently pursued undergraduate degrees. “The Israel Family Scholarship Fund is a way to honor all the University of Iowa has done for us. Because we were able to endow the gift, we can ensure that generations of students will receive support,” says Jim.

Additionally, the couple created a Community Foundation charitable giving fund from which each family member can make giving decisions and support causes they are passionate about. “The Community Foundation has simplified our giving,” shares Deb. “We get to spend our time thinking about where we want to spend our charitable dollars, rather than the administrative details.” Jim adds, “Deb and I have loved the volunteer activities we have been involved with in our community. We want the next generation of our family to share in the joy of giving we have experienced.”

The Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines is proud to serve as the host foundation for 31 county community foundations across our state. By assisting these committed, local leaders with the administrative support necessary to sustain their mission, we provide the opportunity for our county community foundations to focus on the important task at hand growing charitable, long-term support for the communities they love. • Support like that being achieved thanks to the example set by Kit and Stan Zirbel. “The value of helping our neighbors was instilled in us at an early age,” says daughter Karen Weld. “It was important to our family to create an endowment at the Wright County Charitable Foundation in memory of our parents so that the lessons they taught us about community can be taught to future generations.”
By establishing an endowment at the Wright County Charitable Foundation in honor of our parents, their church will continue to receive their support even though they are gone. It is like my mother is sitting in the church pew, putting a check in the weekly offering plate.
The Community Foundation’s affiliates help their neighbors support causes they care about, provide sustainable support for local organizations and grow giving in the counties they serve.

• In Fairfield, the Greater Jefferson County Foundation worked with a donor to ensure sustainable support for the Carnegie Historical Museum, while taking advantage of the Endow Iowa Tax Credit program. “Endow Iowa provided a win-win for our community. We were able to connect a donor with an opportunity to stretch his charitable support for a cause he cares about, while our community forever benefits from the sustainable support his gift will provide," says Dave Neff of the Greater Jefferson County Foundation. • As our most recent partner in giving, the Clay County Community Foundation has developed a committed team of community advocates to ensure the future success of their region. “As we looked to grow our impact in the communities we serve, the Community Foundation was a natural partner. They provide the support we need to confidently grow giving for today and for the future of Clay County,” says Kate Rinehart of the Clay County Community Foundation advisory board.

LASTING LESSONS As Joyce Chapman prepared for her retirement from West Bank, she and her husband Rick were mindful of how they could continue to support the causes they cared about. “As we discussed our ongoing charitable giving interests with our investment advisor, she encouraged us to work with the Community Foundation. A donor advised fund provided us with tax advantages, but what drew us to the organization was the unmatched good it does for our community,” shares Joyce. After utilizing their donor advised fund for a number of years to support Greater Des Moines, the Chapmans considered how they could further utilize the Community Foundation. “Our investment advisor helped us use a required distribution from our IRA as a tax-wise gift to open another fund, specifically supporting students at Des Moines Area Community College,” says Joyce.

“Rick spent his career teaching at DMACC and his favorite students were resumers,” shares Joyce. “These are individuals who were perhaps coming back from military service, or women whose circumstances had changed and now needed more formal education. Regardless of the reason for continuing their education, these students were hardworking and eager to learn. Thanks to the Community Foundation, we feel fortunate to be able to provide ongoing scholarships for this specific, valuable student population.”

Housing is more than a home, it is stability. A safe place to lay your head, a nearby school for children to attend, a place to meet neighbors and build community. These are essential outcomes all made possible through a home. “Each year in Polk County, 4,000 plus families are evicted from their homes. These are working families who just aren’t making enough to afford stable housing,” shares Pam Carmichael with HOME Inc. Adds Lance Henning, CEO of Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity, “When a family cannot afford housing, they are living in substandard conditions and making spending decisions that impact other areas of their life such as healthcare or putting enough food on the table.”

Pam Carmichael of HOME Inc. and Lance Henning of Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity are developing affordable housing in the Birdland neighborhood, thanks to Leadership Grant support, to provide families like Veronica and Dola’s an opportunity to plant roots in our community.
In 2016 the Community Foundation made Leadership Grants, funded by the Better Together Fund, to HOME Inc. and Habitat for Humanity to support their unique approaches to the revitalization of the Birdland neighborhood in Des Moines through affordable housing. Habitat for Humanity will develop a pocket neighborhood, the first of its kind in Iowa, which will consist of 22 affordable single-family homes designed to build community, connectivity and allow families to plant their roots. Additionally, HOME Inc. has established a revolving loan fund that will allow for the development of 37 units of affordable housing to strengthen a neighborhood once devastated by flooding. “There aren’t a lot of organizations, like the Community Foundation, who would support this type of grant,” shares Pam. “They took a risk and it will pay off through the lives of these families for years to come.”
