The Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines improves quality of life for all by promoting charitable giving, connecting donors with causes they care about and providing leadership on important community issues... we’re simply better together.

Dear Community Foundation Friends, 2013 was a banner year thanks to the generosity of Iowans using the Community Foundation as their charitable giving resource, and we look forward to continuing this success for years to come. In my 12 years serving the Community Foundation, it has been a privilege to watch this organization grow, in terms of both asset size and in community impact. We now administer over 1,200 charitable funds and it is an honor for our team to share the joy of giving with the individuals, families, nonprofit organizations and corporations we work with through those funds. Statewide we are seeing strong support of charitable investment as we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Endow Iowa Tax Credit program. This innovative legislation encourages the support of local charitable organizations through a generous tax credit available for gifts made to endowed funds held at community foundations across Iowa. In 2013 we saw $6 million in Endow Iowa tax credits awarded. Even more impressive, since its inception, the Endow Iowa Tax Credit program has leveraged more than $120 million in permanent endowments for Iowa charities. This unique partnership between the Iowa legislature and the community foundation network in Iowa is benefiting the missions of nonprofits across our state FOREVER. Locally, we are thrilled to celebrate with Greater Des Moines in the continual receipt of national awards and accolades recognizing the exemplary opportunities available in the place we are proud to call home. At the Community Foundation we know strong communities start with a strong foundation. Investment of charitable assets through the Community Foundation to meet current and future community needs and opportunities strengthens our community, improving quality of life for all. Thank you for your support. You are making our communities and state stronger for generations to come. We look forward to continuing our work together throughout 2014 – we are truly better together.

Strong Communities Start with a Strong Foundation.

Community Investment. Through strategic Leadership Grants the Community Foundation plays a key role in providing significant funding leadership to projects that strengthen Greater Des Moines by proactively responding to needs and opportunities. Leadership Grants are funded through contributions to the Better Together Fund, a fund providing an opportunity for all who love Greater Des Moines to make an investment in our community’s most important projects for generations to come. The Community Foundation’s investment of more than $480,000 in Leadership Grants in 2013 funded: • Establishment of the Bernie & Berniece Baker Club, creating a direct feeder pattern and start-up middle school programming for the Boys and Girls Clubs. • Des Moines “I Have a Dream” Foundation’s development of a new model of education intervention to ensure more kids have the necessary tools to graduate from high school prepared for post-secondary education. • Development of the Iowa Homeless Youth Center’s new Lighthouse Transitional Living Program facilities to provide stable housing for young homeless mothers. • Expansion of Des Moines Public School’s use of AmeriCorps members in tutoring, mentoring and service learning programs to improve at-risk students’ outcomes. • Solidarity Microfinance through Iowa Community Capital to provide financial training, micro- enterprise loans and business planning/technical assistance for low-income women starting their own business. • Youth Emergency Services & Shelter of Iowa’s Emergency Shelter expansion to provide the additional space and services necessary to meet the needs of children in crisis. • Child & Family Policy Center’s Urban Core Community Development Coordinators and their work to engage residents in urban core neighborhoods to strengthen community. • Renovation of the Des Moines Area Religious Council’s administrative offices and expansion of the Food Pantry Network providing the capacity necessary to offer service to families in need, with reduced expense. In addition, the Community Foundation provides Capacity Building Grants to support nonprofits in strengthening their boards and governance, strategically planning for the future a nd streamlining operations. Capacity Building Grants were awarded to 28 nonprofit organizations in 2013, totaling more than $69,000 in support.

A Community Foundation Leadership Grant helps young families get a strong start. Iowa Homeless Youth Center’s Lighthouse Transitional Living Program provides a safe home for pregnant or parenting young mothers and their children in Des Moines. Many of these women have not benefited from positive adult influences in their life, and a number report abuse as a reality of their past. Lighthouse provides a new opportunity for its residents by offering not only housing, but guidance and programming in education, employment, living skills, community engagement and safe housing. This programming is designed to assist the women in discovering their abilities and pursuing their dreams. The Community Foundation was proud to award Iowa Homeless Youth Centers with a Leadership Grant in 2013 to support the purchase and renovation of a new facility, allowing them to serve more families in exciting new ways. The new facility consists of two to three bedroom duplex living units to better prepare the women and their families for realistic living situations after transitioning from Lighthouse. Lighthouse represents one of eight Leadership Grants awarded in 2013 in support of community needs. Funding for Community Foundation Leadership Grants is made possible by gifts to the Better Together Fund. Because community needs are ever-changing, the Community Foundation uses charitable contributions to the Better Together Fund in response to the most pressing community needs.

“The Leadership Grant provided by the Community Foundation was instrumental in securing additional funding for the Lighthouse Transitional Facility’s new home. The new facility accommodates more families and allows us to develop customized plans to meet the goals of the moms we serve.” — Toby O’Berry Director, Iowa Homeless Youth Centers Des Moines

Better Together.

What began as a dream has become reality thanks to support from the Community Foundation. When Des Moines Social Club executive director Zachary Mannheimer moved to Des Moines he saw an opportunity to add to the city’s cultural landscape, and the Community Foundation was there to help. What started as an idea is now a vision fulfilled as the Des Moines Social Club moves to its new home in the remodeled Des Moines Firehouse No. 1. The Social Club provides a collaborative environment that intends to change the face of the arts in the community. From a variety of art galleries and theater spaces, to dance classes and a recording studio, the Social Club offers something for everyone. According to Social Club chief operating officer Cyndi Pederson, “We wouldn’t be where we are today without the Community Foundation. The financial support provided by the Leadership Circle and through Leadership Grant funding made this project possible. More importantly, funding from the Community Foundation was a valuable seal of approval that gave others faith in the project.”

“The talent, professionalism and overall encouragement I have received at the Community Foundation is unmatched not only in Des Moines, but in every other community I have lived.” — Zachary Mannheimer Executive Director, Des Moines Social Club

Vision Accomplished.

A Community Foundation Capacity Building Grant connected Harbor of Hope with professional technical assistance and the outcome is changing lives. Every organization has its challenges, but through Community Foundation Capacity Building Grants support is available. Capacity Building Grants support nonprofits in strengthening their boards and governance, strategically planning for the future and streamlining operations. “The Capacity Building Grant awarded to us by the Community Foundation provided the financial support necessary to work with a consultant and develop a plan for strengthening our organization,” says Harbor of Hope executive director Tom Pontow. Harbor of Hope is a residential addiction recovery center, providing a positive and structured program to its clients allowing them to transform and reconstruct their lives. During a time of administrative transition, the organization applied for and received a Capacity Building Grant from the Community Foundation. The grant provided the funding neccessary to work with Sam Carrell of Carrell Strategies. Through their work together, Carrell and Harbor of Hope are creating a strong foundation from which opportunities for growth and expansion of services can be developed. From board development to operation manuals, a structure is being put in place that works for the organization and allows Harbor of Hope to effectively fulfill its mission.

“Thanks to the work funded by the Community Foundation Capacity Building Grant, the best part of this story is yet to be written. Harbor of Hope is building the foundation for the future.”

Transformational Change.

Community Connect was developed to provide a framework around mentoring, but the relationships which have developed break the mold. When developing Capital Crossroads, a vision plan for Iowa’s capital region, organizers knew the continued success of the region was contingent upon cultivating the next generation of community leaders. “In developing Capital Crossroads we heard time and time again of the unique opportunity available in Des Moines to contact a community leader and meet for coffee and conversation. We knew we had to leverage this community asset and develop programming around it,” says Greater Des Moines Partnership president Gene Meyer. The Community Foundation responded to this community need by creating Community Connect: Mentors Inspiring Success, a mentoring program connecting participants with our community’s more experienced leaders. In its first year Community Connect exceeded expectations with impact evident in the relationships built and connections made. Participant Kelly Sparks summarizes her experience in this way, “Community Connect made me realize how fortunate I am to live in Des Moines. In just a few months, I developed relationships with mentors and mentees that have expanded my network and enriched my life.”

“Community Connect is one of the best things happening in Des Moines. The relationships I created through Community Connect will help me become a better professional and community member. This group of current and future leaders is unstoppable.” — Adam Kaduce Community Connect Participant

Connections that Count.

Community Leadership and Capacity Building. For more than 40 years, the Community Foundation has worked closely with donors, local leaders and hundreds of nonprofit organizations to address important issues and needs. We are proud to provide the following programs and services for our community, donors and nonprofit organizations. Nonprofit Endowment Building & Administration of Charitable Assets The Community Foundation works with nonprofit organizations to establish endowments and invest endowment assets, while providing responsible fund management. This enables nonprofit organizations to grow charitable assets for sustained support. BoardLaunch Trainings Strong nonprofit organizations must have effective and engaged board members. The Community Foundation BoardLaunch training series enhances the management and leadership skills of local nonprofit boards by providing technical governance and leadership development. Charitable Investment Partners The Charitable Investment Partners program recognizes the important relationships between donors and their trusted professional advisors. Donors can establish funds at the Community Foundation, while their assets are invested and managed by their preferred professional advisors. Community Betterment Fund Administration The Community Foundation works in a management and/or fiscal role to assist in coordination of projects that improve quality of life in our community, yet are not affiliated with a specific nonprofit organization. Expert financial management is provided and allows donors the tax benefits they desire. Community Convening The Community Foundation plays a unique role in the community as an organization able to convene necessary parties around community issues, opportunities and resources. As a neutral convener we can help identify and address issues quickly, or pull our community leaders together to take advantage of unique opportunities. Nonprofit Accounting Services The Community Foundation provides professional accounting and administrative services for organizations ready to spend more time fulfilling their missions and less time on financial administration.

Community Leadership.

The Blank Park Zoo is bringing the world to Des Moines with support from the Community Foundation. Recent expansion of the Blank Park Zoo has made it possible for visitors to see animals from across the world, all in the same day. These experiences are thanks to the development and execution of a visionary strategic plan; a strategic plan made possible through a grant from the Community Foundation. The grant funded the creation of a master plan for the zoo, incorporating the expert advice of both zoo development specialists and community focus groups. As the Blank Park Zoo has continued to grow, the Community Foundation has been there to provide support. According to Blank Park Zoo president Mark Vukovich, “The Community Foundation is a clearinghouse for what is happening in the nonprofit sector. They have served as both a sounding board and community partner.” The Community Foundation and the Blank Park Zoo are committed to advancing the long-term vision of giving in the community, as evidenced by the zoo’s decision to move their endowment to the Community Foundation. “There is credibility to saying our endowment is held at the Community Foundation,” says Vukovich. “From the facilitation of complex gifts, to connecting us with opportunities in the community, the Community Foundation offers unmatched charitable giving expertise.”

“The Community Foundation is a respected partner providing us a valuable voice in the community.”

For more than 100 years 4-H has been developing Iowa’s youth. Now the Iowa 4-H Foundation’s funds at the Community Foundation are developing financial sustainability for years to come. The Iowa 4-H Foundation was formed in 1949 to develop a summer camp for 4-H members, but as times have changed so has the work of the organization. The Iowa 4-H Foundation currently contributes to fundraising efforts accounting for 52% of the total programming budget for 4-H programs statewide. The Iowa 4-H Foundation recognizes sustained support of its programs is not feasible without endowment building. This forward-thinking approach led them to move their endowments to the Community Foundation in 2013, where they also established four Endow Iowa qualified funds. “Endowment management has been simplified by working with the Community Foundation,” says Iowa 4-H Foundation executive director Kris Fish Kuhlmann. “The Community Foundation offers services we didn’t previously have as part of our endowment management. Moving our endowments to the Community Foundation relieved us of work we were doing internally, which was taking away from our ability to raise funding critical to our mission.” The funds established at the Community Foundation provide essential funding for programming, scholarships, administrative support and the Iowa 4-H Center. Through the development of endowments in these areas, opportunities for Iowa’s youth through 4-H continue to grow and support the organization’s rich history of developing exceptional leaders.

“As we looked at our options for endowment management, we felt a strong connection to what the Community Foundation offers. The staff was wonderful to work with and the service they provided made us feel like we were their only customers.”

— Kris Fish Kuhlmann

Belin McCormick’s investment in arts and culture is aided by the Community Foundation’s expertise in giving. Belin McCormick, P.C. believes successful communities are those where the private sector plays an active role in supporting the well-being of the community. One of Belin McCormick’s areas of charitable focus is arts and culture. The firm understands quality of life is a key economic driver for the area, and their continued investment in Greater Des Moines’ arts and cultural organizations proves to be a smart investment. “Our Corporate Fund at the Community Foundation allows us to support organizations that are fulfilling their mission and achieving significant outcomes. It also provides us with an effective and efficient way to carry out our charitable objectives in the community,” says Belin McCormick attorney Steve Zumbach. “The Community Foundation is aware of the goals and needs of the community, and helps us do our homework so we are best able to make solid and strategic charitable investments.” The impact of Belin McCormick’s support has been felt by arts and cultural organizations throughout Greater Des Moines. According to Des Moines Performing Arts president and CEO Jeff Chelesvig, “The investment Belin McCormick has continued to make in the arts has shaped the cultural landscape of the city. Des Moines continues to excel in developing a community where people want to live, work and play. We owe much of this success to the corporate leadership and support provided by Belin McCormick and others.”

“The Community Foundation provides a vehicle to make giving easy. They offer charitable funds designed to meet our needs which in turn makes the entire community, including the business community, stronger.” — Steve Zumbach Attorney, Belin McCormick, P.C.

Opening a fund at the Community Foundation has continued to make giving a family affair for the Clubb family. When Sandy Hatfield Clubb and husband Jeff Clubb were first approached about utilizing the services of the Community Foundation they were not convinced it was a good fit. The family annually supported charitable interests, but they did not think they had the capacity to give at a level which would allow them to utilize the services of the Community Foundation. As they began working with the Community Foundation, it became apparent the organization is available to everyone as they strive to reach their charitable goals. Opening a fund at the Community Foundation also provided a fun way to encourage and discuss giving as a family. “It is important to us as a family to select a cause, or area of giving, to support around Christmas instead of exchanging gifts,” says Hatfield Clubb. “Through our new Community Foundation fund we can set a charitable goal, make contributions throughout the year and then sit down as a family and decide how we want to use our charitable assets to support our community around the holidays.” A Donor Advised Fund is flexible and convenient, allowing donors to support a variety of charitable causes through their funds anytime they choose. There are no minimum gifts required to open a fund, and all fund holders benefit from the charitable giving expertise and community leadership of the Community Foundation.

“By opening a fund at the Community Foundation we have found a home from which to build a foundation of giving, while taking advantage of the opportunity to be part of something bigger.”

— Sandy Hatfield Clubb

The Gift of Sharing.

Passing on the gift of giving was simplified thanks to the Community Foundation. As a successful businessman, Jim O’Halloran knows the importance of a succession plan. That is why as he thought about the future of his family’s private foundation, the James and Jeanne O’Halloran Foundation, Jim knew he needed to create a plan to continue the family’s legacy of giving. Jim turned to the Community Foundation where he found the organization’s administrative excellence and giving expertise a perfect fit for the future needs of the family’s foundation. By transferring the assets of the private foundation to a Family Foundation Fund held at the Community Foundation, Jim’s family members are serving as fund advisors. This allows them to focus on developing their skills in charitable giving, rather than the administrative work of operating a private foundation. As the next generation of the family develops their charitable giving skills, the Community Foundation is there to assist by facilitating grants to organizations they recommend, and providing administrative support and guidance on community initiatives. Thanks to their example and thoughtful planning, Jim and Jeanne’s legacy of giving is sure to continue for generations.

“The Community Foundation has the best capability to assist my family in charitable decision making, resulting in a wonderful way to give back to the community and world.”

— Jim O’Halloran

The Okoboji Foundation is one of 39 counties and communities affiliated with the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines. For 25 years the Okoboji Foundation has been the center point of community giving, providing leadership and building beneficial partnerships to make a lasting and positive impact in the Iowa Great Lakes Region. Through the Okoboji Foundation’s grantmaking they serve as a ripple of good which travels throughout the entire region. In response to the charitable interests of their donors, the Okoboji Foundation created three unique Field of Interest Funds from which grants are made to areas their donors care most about. The three areas of interest are: Lake Quality & Environment, Arts & Culture and Outdoor Experiences & Recreation. As supporters of the Lake Quality & Environment Fund, Tom and Joan Gronstal are pleased to see the impact their gift continues to have on the Iowa Great Lakes Region, “Iowans have enjoyed the beauty of the Iowa Great Lakes for more than 100 years. We’re happy to do our part to preserve this wonderful area for our children and grandchildren.” The Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines proudly serves as the host foundation for the Okoboji Foundation. As a host foundation, the Community Foundation provides technical, fiscal and administrative expertise to its affiliate foundations, including the Okoboji Foundation. This support allows affiliate foundations to concentrate their efforts on fulfilling their missions and bettering their communities.

“I see the great value of like-minded people joining together to make a lasting positive impact through our Community Foundation.” — Dwight Conover Board Chair, Okoboji Foundation

The Endow Iowa Tax Credit program celebrates 10 years of success. 2013 marked the 10th anniversary of the highly successful Endow Iowa Tax Credit program. Enacted on January 1, 2003, Endow Iowa promotes gifts to permanent endowments by awarding up to 25 percent of the amount donated as a state tax credit, when making a gift through Iowa community foundations to qualified endowments. The goal of the program is simple; allow citizens an opportunity to make meaningful gifts benefiting their communities for generations, while receiving a tax credit in recognition of their investment in the future of Iowa charities. The foresight of those who worked to enact the Endow Iowa legislation has paid dividends in the first 10 years of the program. With gifts made through Endow Iowa totaling more than $140 million in donations, the charitable passion of Iowans is clear. This innovative legislation will continue to benefit Iowans for generations to come thanks to gifts citizens are making to endowments today.

“The Endow Iowa Tax Credit program is an innovative piece of legislation which continues to serve as a national model of what is possible through collaboration. The support of this program by government, the nonprofit sector and private donors is ensuring the services provided by Iowa’s nonprofits will continue for years to come.” — Matt McCoy State Senator

Field of Interest Funds

Scholarship Funds

Charitable Gift Annuities

Field of Interest Funds connect donors with their passions and specific areas of need in the community. Education, the arts, the environment and disadvantaged youth and families are a few areas donors can support through these funds. The Community Foundation awards grants to community organizations and programs that are making a difference in the areas identified by the donor.

Donors may establish Scholarship Funds to benefit students of a particular school, geographic region, educational discipline, gender or other designation.

A charitable gift annuity is a simple contract between a donor and the Community Foundation by which a portion is returned to a designated recipient as scheduled income payments and the amount transferred to the Community Foundation establishes a fund to benefit a charity of the donor’s choice.
