In the year 2021

CHARLIE TURNER • MAYOR, CITY OF HEWITT

T

here was once a popular song played on the radio that told a story about the history of mankind as it progressed through several centuries. For those who are not familiar, the song was “In the Year 2525” by Zager and Evans, and it told a story about mankind’s progression through all five physical senses change for future life. The song’s mood was one of depression, doom and a negative outcome—almost to the point of extinction.

This past year introduced COVID 19 as today’s modern-day plague. For a period of time, COVID shut down our daily lives and created new concerns for our future health. For one year now, COVID has separated families, school friends, workplace friends, social friends and even daily acquaintances we might encounter as we go about our daily routine. No one could have imagined in 2019 that normal life would become more of a virtual routine, affecting all facets of how we interact with one another. We did not have a crystal ball to predict future events. When I was a young boy, there was a cartoon that portrayed all the people living on earth using electronic devices to communicate, educate, view and interact with others. The cartoon series was called “The Jetsons” and they lived in our imaginary future. How could we know at that time that would become—in my case—the virtual school of my granddaughters? In my day and time, it was the dream of every student to stay at home, watch television and learn everything there was to know by lounging in your pajamas while eating a snack and talking with teachers, using all-electronic devices. During this era, students participated in “duck and cover drills” to protect themselves from when an atomic bomb might be dropped on the U.S. How could time and life change so drastically as to sequester our world from this bomb we could see, to a virus we could not? There were many times my childhood was painfully disrupted by having to receive a polio and smallpox vaccination, along with various other injections for many childhood diseases.

I could never have imagined going to the internet to place an order, paying with a credit card, and then driving to the grocery store to have someone place my order in my vehicle. I sometimes am in disbelief that I have not attended my church in-person for 12 months—only attending services via electronic airwaves on my computer. For those that have been trapped at home during this pandemic, there are many examples of the cliché, “The cure is worse than the disease.” COVID has caused many to deal with feelings of depression, worry

about shortages of food, limited medical treatment, hospitalization unavailability and isolation at home. I have interacted with many people during my daily routine, who told me that life couldn’t get much worse than the COVID pandemic. Everyone envisioned a break from the pandemic to just relax, travel and interact with others to live life like the perfect vacation. I have a vision to visit the mountains, as I have done for many years, to breathe in fresh air, photograph the landscape, interact with nature and play in the powdered snow. The year 2021 did not allow me to travel to the mountains, but instead brought the mountain atmosphere to me. Local weather forecasts predicted that we would see snow, ice and lower temperatures. As the arctic front approached our hometown, the CONTINUED ON PAGE 20... HewittChamber.com Hewitt Chamber Express | 7

Home-buying tips if you’re in the market MELISSA HARRELL • REALTOR, H&A REAL ESTATE TEAM

A

s we are currently in a strong seller’s market, and some buyers are finding themselves in multiple offer situations, it is crucial

to start the home-buying process in a strong position.

If you are in the market to buy a new home, the first (and very

important) step is to meet with a lender and start the pre-approval process to work toward full approval with a lender. This will shorten your buyer approval period, and will also present well to a seller. Additionally, differentiate between your needs and your wants, and focus on your needs to determine whether a home meets the priorities you’ve established. Finally, present a strong competitive offer to the seller. It is important to know the negotiated terms in an offer, such as the amount of earnest money, length of the option period, and who pays for the survey and title policy. It is also important to understand the appraisal process. A seller will be looking for terms that favor their position, so seeking advice from a professional Realtor® will give you a competitive advantage.

Snowdemic ...continued from page 7

predictions became more ominously threatening, as talk of the approaching weather would be of epic historical concern. No one could have foreseen that the 2021 ice age—dubbed “Snowdemic”—would establish new historic records. The post-Snowdemic damage to homes, public services, roads, supplies, agriculture and loss of life cannot be completely assessed at this time. Many remained in their homes, experiencing very cold temperatures that damaged water pipes by freezing and disrupting fresh water supply. The amount of hardships that people suffered and experienced cannot be completely assessed in time, money or human health, nor be judged for long-term effect. Humans are resilient (and more durable) than anyone can imagine. The will of the human spirit can lift us all above natural hardships. The song that is mentioned in the beginning of my article ends with the question, “In the year 9595, I kinda’ wonder if man is gonna’ be alive?” Well the answer to that question is “He will!” Do me a favor, please don’t say it could not get any worse than COVID and Snowdemic!

F

ive Midway ISD schools have been named to the 20192020 Educational Results Partnership (ERP) Honor Roll for high achievement in student success. The ERP Honor Roll program, sponsored by the Campaign for Business and Education Excellence, is part of a national effort to identify higher-performing schools and districts that are improving student outcomes. The honored campuses are: Midway Middle School Woodgate Intermediate School South Bosque Elementary School Spring Valley Elementary School Woodway Elementary School These schools are among 3,490 public schools in the nation to receive this distinction. Midway ISD was one of only six Texas districts to be named to the Honor Roll in 2019. The 2019-2020 ERP Honor Roll was developed using the nation’s largest database on student achievement, maintained by the ERP, to identify successful schools and districts. Honor Roll is the only school recognition program in the state that exclusively uses student achievement outcomes as selection criteria. Schools that appear on the Honor Roll have demonstrated consistent high levels of student academic achievement, improvement in achievement levels over time, and a reduction in achievement gaps among student populations.

Midway Middle, Woodgate Intermediate, Spring Valley Elementary and Woodway Elementary Schools all received recognition in the Star category as highperforming, achievement gap-closing schools. South Bosque Elementary School was recognized in the Scholar category as an achievement gap-closing school exhibiting high performance without significant levels of low-income students. These schools are all recognized on the ERP Honor Roll because they have demonstrated the ability to get students to grade-level achievement and beyond. About the Educational Results Partnership: The Educational Results Partnership is a nonprofit organization that applies data science to help improve student outcomes and career readiness. They use data science and predictive analytics to identify successful public education systems, practices, programs and policies that are delivering the best results for students. The ERP is committed to closing equity gaps in education and the labor market, and their research centers on improving academic and workforce outcomes for all. ERP’s goal is to ensure that more students are equipped to enter the workforce with the skills today’s global economy demands. To learn more, visit www.edresults.org.
