Message from the President Chris Watkins 2019 Greater Hewitt Chamber President, Central National Bank

H

ewitt has an atmosphere like no other community in Texas. Nestled just outside Waco, Hewitt is close enough to work and play for convenience, yet far enough away to enjoy the quiet pace of a small town. Its one-of-a-kind entertainment, shopping, and dining amenities are heralded far and wide, and our public services continue to earn state and national acclaim. The area continues to attract new employers and industries, driving an unprecedented growth in career opportunities, education, entertainment, and general quality of life. Midway ISD educators have proven that their schools are among the best in the state, defined by the growing number of families who choose to locate within the district. Hewitt Public Library's dedicated director and staff have led the charge to redefine what a library can be and how it can best serve the community. Hewitt’s Police and Fire Departments’ tireless efforts have earned Hewitt a place high on the list of “safest cities” in Texas. Hewitt's public service sector works with nearby city public services to

provide the highest quality and most advanced services for all of Hewitt. Hewitt is expected to continue its tremendous growth for the foreseeable future. Housing, industry, and retail continue to grow its tax base and local economy. It’s an exciting time to be involved in the Greater Hewitt Chamber! It has a longstanding reputation of supporting its members through ribbon-cuttings, professional development, networking functions, and sponsorship opportunities. The Chamber gives back to our local community each year with $10,000 scholarships for high school seniors who have distinguished themselves academically, often while overcoming significant personal financial or medical hardships. The Greater Hewitt Chamber also partners throughout the year with the City of Hewitt to bring fun and safe family entertainment to the area, and also partners with local service organizations such as the Hewitt Kiwanis Club and Hewitt Lions Club in raising funds to benefit Hewitt. Visit HewittChamber.com to learn more about the Chamber and the community we are privileged to serve.

Greater Waco

A great place to live A

t Allen Samuels, we believe the Waco area is a great place to live, work and play…and we’re working hard to help keep it that way. For decades, this philosophy has been an integral part of helping make our communities prosper.

The Allen Samuels team proudly supports Meals On Wheels, and the McLennan County Sale of Champions Junior Livestock Show. The dealership is also the Official Auto Dealer of the Cameron Park Zoo and the Heart ‘O Texas Fair and Rodeo.

When Mr. Samuels opened his first dealership in Waco in the 1980s, this philosophy was put into action by ensuring that the dealership was totally dedicated to giving back to the community. Not only was Mr. Samuels personally involved, but his management team and employees were as well.

Other organizations the dealership supports include the Waco Symphony, Academic All Stars, area high school scholarships, MCC and Baylor, as well as the Hewitt, Waco, Hispanic and African American Chambers of Commerce. A large number of other clubs and organizations also benefit from sponsorships from Allen Samuels every year.

Early Allen Samuels ad campaigns were centered on community involvement, with Mr. Samuels shown walking by Waco area landmarks, and often right through the middle of community activities in progress. It wasn’t just a campaign. Mr. Samuels set the bar for joining, donating and sponsoring scores of activities, events and organizations in communities around his dealerships. Today, that same philosophy continues at Waco’s Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram Fiat store. General Manager Ted Teague has immersed himself in the Waco community, and continues Mr. Samuels’ tradition of community involvement and partnerships.

Allen Samuels’ community involvement is deeply embedded into the customer experience at his dealerships. In Waco, we’ve always extended his personal invitation to “Come by…Let’s be friends,” and that’s exactly how we treat our customers. In recognition of our efforts, we were recognized as an FCA Customer First Award for Excellence winner for 2018 and 2019—placing our store in the top 9% of all FCA Chrysler dealers in the United States. Like our dedication to community and remarkable service, Allen Samuels and Chrysler are dedicated to bringing customers the finest vehicles. The 2019 RAM 1500 was recently named the 2019 Motor Trend Truck of the Year and the 2019 Jeep Wrangler was named the 2019 SUV of the year. Additionally, many of our brands and models have been recognized as among the best in their class for safety, design and performance. This dedication to excellence is the foundation for all of Mr. Samuels’ companies. Allen Samuels Holdings of Waco currently owns dealerships in Waco, Aransas Pass, Hearne, D/FW; Oxford, Mississippi; Jackson, Tennessee and Edmond, Oklahoma. Additionally, the company also owns Allen Samuels House of Travel in Waco and Waco Regional Tennis and Fitness Center.

PUT SIMPLY: IT’S

LINDSEY BARTLETT • ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT TO HEWITT CHIEF OF POLICE

A

s the winter winds blow hues of grey into our Hewitt skies, we turn to the mawkish delights of warmer activities. We reach for the remote that turns the living room abuzz with colors and sounds. We charge our phones in hopes of defeating our neighbor over on Devonshire in a game of Scrabble. Perhaps we reach for a worn book with its pages smelling of must, and its characters waiting to be unleashed. All of these are fine pursuits for an evening, but what else is there in our area? Is there something that can reach deeper into our hearts that will leave a lasting vestige that there is more in this world for us to discover? I believe there is something out there. It covers our walls, street corners, and buildings. It dances around paper on our wooden dining tables covered in crayon. It flashes across our computer screens, and infiltrates our social media. Put simply: it’s art. I’ve had the great fortune to study art in its many forms through university, as well as move around the country for work. In this time, I have come to one conclusion—some of the best art I’ve ever witnessed was created in our Central Texas area. Our once humble area now boasts some of the top talent in the nation,

8 | Hewitt Chamber Express Winter 2019

thanks to the popularity of silos and shiplap. This can be witnessed downtown at several art galleries (Cultivate7Twelve, Art Forum of Waco), as well as throughout the year at the Farmer’s Market. These art galleries are home to some exciting exhibits. Recently, Banksy’s traveling exhibit was brought to town, and was received to quite a crowd. If you are brave enough to venture out in the biting cold, you can witness some impressive outdoor art. New and emerging artists are leaving their proverbial stamp on our area almost every week. Some great new murals downtown include art from French artist Blek Le Rat, a colorful eye-catching mural by Will Suarez called “1,000 Hopes”, and the delicate flower display by Houston artist Tyler Kay (located near the silos). My personal favorites are the unexpected small jewels hidden around street corners. With most of the art in Central Texas being downtown, I have one wish for the upcoming year. My hope for the new year is that Hewitt artists will begin to emerge and create a small town of wonder, delight, and color against the grey hues.

Waco’s arts and culture differentiate our town from other towns. Every town has standard visitor amenities, such as restaurants, but only Waco has Kermit Oliver, the Doris Miller Memorial, and now, Blek Le Rat street art. It’s clear that Waco’s arts community is growing— all part of being different from other towns, and creating enough reasons for people to make the trip and stay one more hour, one more day, one more overnight.

GAINING MOMENTUM BIG QUESTIONS NEED COMMUNITY ANSWERS Community invests time before money

Did you know that most Midway ISD elementary campuses are already operating over 90% capacity? Did you know 2,800 home are scheduled to be built in MISD in the next 10 years? Oh, and we just found out about a new development with 600 more homes... but don't worry, the school district is taking steps to plan for such growth! In fall 2018, the Momentum Facility Committee began an intense study of the conditions in which Midway ISD operates. A core of approximately 40 parents, teachers, business owners, and retirees are volunteering their evenings multiple times each month to become familiar with aspects of school business, district academic goals, the classic "strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats," and other various conditions affecting decision-making. The months of analysis and study by the Momentum Facility Committee will provide ample time to become fully informed before structuring recommendations of needed facilities for the School Board's consideration.
