PARKS & TRAILS

PARKS & TRAILS

The rolling hills of the lush Minnesota River Valley sport many wonderful trails for walking, biking, in-line skating and more. Many of the local parks have pathways of their own as well. For a full listing of all of the local parks and their amenities, please check out visitgreatermankato.com under ‘where to play’.

Sakatah Singing Hills Trail J-1, H-1 888.MINNDNR dnr.state.mn.us/state_ trails/sakatah/index.html Follow 39 miles of abandoned railroad grade from Mankato (the trail begins on Lime Valley Road, just past the intersection of Riverfront Drive and Hwy. 14) to Faribault. The blacktopped trail meanders through rich farmland and small towns and follows several lakes, including Madison and Cannon, where there are swimming beaches. There are parks and rest stops in communities every few miles. The trail, which intersects Sakatah State Park, is open for biking, hiking, in-line skating and cross-country skiing.

Seven Mile Creek Trail D-1 Just three miles north of Mankato on Hwy. 169, you’ll find seven miles of hiking trails that cover 600 acres of wooded park. Picnic shelters and grills are scattered throughout the park and along the creek. Williams Minneopa Learning Center A-6 With two miles of paved trails, the Williams Minneopa Learning Center is considered one of the best handicapped-accessible nature centers in the state. The paths traverse wildlife reserves, prairie vegetation, Indian mounds and an Indian village site. Information and comfort sites are set up throughout the center.

Red Jacket Bike Trail D-8 The Red Jacket Trail begins at the YMCA in Mankato and travels about 13 miles through open countryside, beside the Minnesota River and over three railroad trestles (including its namesake, the 550-foot-long Red Jacket) to Rapidan. Several wooden bridges and a landmark tunnel under the new southern bypass add charm to the trail. Minnesota River Trail D-1 507.387.8649 Follow the Minnesota River on bike, foot or in-line skates from Riverfront Park, through downtown Mankato to Sibley Park in west Mankato.

24

Minneopa State Park A-6 You could spend hours watching the waterfall, but you can also hike along the trails that encircle the falls, watch the birds, visit Seppman Mill—an abandoned windmill—or camp in one of the picturesque sites. 507.389.5464 Bluff Park & Riverview Park D-3/F-4 Their names give them away: These two parks in North Mankato are spectacular for the views they afford. The trails are just an added bonus. North Links Trail

HISTORY OF GREATER MANKATO

HISTORY OF GREATER MANKATO Mankato was inhabited by Lakota-speaking Dakota Sioux when Parsons K. Johnson and Henry Jackson staked claim to the city in 1852. Mankato was originally named “Mahkato,” meaning greenishblue earth, by early inhabitants, but legend says it may have been accidentally changed due to a typographical error made by a clerk. Mankato was settled at the confluence of the Minnesota and Blue Earth Rivers. The land was purchased in a treaty between the Dakota and the government. In 1862, the government broke this treaty, which led to the U.S.-Dakota Conflict of 1862. That conflict resulted in the largest one-day mass execution in U.S. history, the site of which is commemorated by the statue of the Buffalo at Reconciliation Park (100 E. Main St., F-5).

Greater Mankato has many historical attractions that are must-sees for visitors. The Betsy-Tacy houses (332 & 333 Center St., E-5) are a must for any lover of literature. Betsy’s house is the home of author Maud Hart Lovelace. Lovelace, whose books are based in Mankato, is the real-life character of Betsy. The Betsy-Tacy houses are National Literary Landmarks. Tours are available to both houses. Sinclair Lewis (315 S. Broad Street, F-5), another favorite author who loved the landscape and friendliness of Mankato, had a summer home here. He wrote much of his novel "Main Street" while in Mankato.

Sinclair Lewis Home Buffalo at Reconciliation Park In 1880, Mankato was the fourth largest city in Minnesota with a population of 5,500. Today, more than 50,000 people call Greater Mankato home. North Mankato sits across the river from Mankato and was established in 1898.

Old Main Old Main (301 S. 5th St., F-5) is a must-see, especially for alumni of Minnesota State University, Mankato, formerly called Mankato State University. Old Main once sat at the center of the University before the campus expanded completely to the top of the hill.

Hubbard House The Hubbard House (606 S. Broad St., F-5) was once described as one of the finest homes in Mankato. It had one of the first phones, indoor plumbing, electricity and the most modern conveniences of the time. It is a perfect example of Victorian-style architecture. If you love historical buildings and old architecture, be sure to tour the City Center, where many historical buildings—such as the First National Bank (Ellerbe Building), Graif Building, Lasalle and Martin buildings—still stand. An interesting point about the original site of First National Bank (1 Civic Center Plaza, F-5), which is now is surrounded by the Verizon Wireless Center and is known as the Ellerbe Room, is that it was designed by the famous architect Thomas Ellerbe. Legion has it the infamous robber, Jesse James considered robbing the bank, but it was too busy so he went on to Northwood, where he was later caught by local police.
