HISTORY OF GREATER MANKATO

Mankato was originally named “Mahkato” (meaning greenish-blue earth) by its early inhabitants, the Dakota. Mankato is located at the confluence of the Minnesota and Blue Earth Rivers. In 1852, Parsons K. Johnson and Henry Jackson staked claims along these banks and founded the town of Mankato. The city was established on land purchased in a treaty between the U.S. government and the Dakota; breaking of this treaty by the government lead to the U.S.-Dakota Conflict of 1862. North Mankato, which sits just across the river, was established in 1898. The first bridge between North Mankato and Mankato was the Veterans Memorial Bridge constructed in 1880, representing an interdependence and partnership between the cities that still continues. Today, many memorials and buildings exist to commemorate the diverse and important history that has shaped the Greater Mankato area. Lincoln Park was a gift to Mankato from John H. Ray in the 1890s. In 1893, a bronze statue of a Civil War union soldier atop a fountain was added to the park. The fountain and statue were replaced by a stone tablet honoring Civil War veterans in 1935. In 1900, a Spanish American War cannon was dedicated as a memorial. The Lincoln Park neighborhood was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. It is one of the most intact late 19th and 20th century residential neighborhoods in outstate Minnesota. This neighborhood also boasts of the childhood home of beloved children’s author, Maud Hart Lovelace

Built in 1900 with a $40,000 grant from the Carnegie Foundation, the Carnegie Library served as the county and city library until 1977. It has served as a theater and is now a community art center.

The author is the real-life character of “Betsy” and the books are historical fiction based on her childhood memories of growing up in Mankato, the fictionalized “Deep Valley.” Tacy’s House serves as society headquarters, gift shop and interpretive center. Betsy’s house is in the process of restoration to its original condition. A stone bench at the top of Center Street bears the inscription, “To honor Maud Hart Lovelace, who here began the childhood daydreams that one day would be our window to the past.” Tacy’s House is open on Saturdays from 1 pm to 3 pm. 507.345.9777, visit betsy-tacysociety.org.

There were three guest bedrooms and a ballroom on the third floor. (No inside tours available)

The J.W. Schmitt home was Sinclair Lewis’ family residence during the summer of 1919. He wrote much of Main Street in the house and was fond of taking a horse and buggy out into the bluffs to enjoy views of the Minnesota River valley. Le Sueur was a fur trader who was also searching for copper ore to send to France. After he left, local Native Americans burned down the post. A mound rises to the right of the plaque that marks the site.

The Cox House is an architectural marvel, as well as home to one of St. Peter’s most prominent residents. The home was built in 1871 for E. St. Julien Cox, a Civil War officer, attorney, St. Peter’s first mayor, state senator, and eventually district court judge. The railroad and highway crossing at the Le Sueur River has been both a railway and highway bridge since at least the 1870s. The railroad bridge still standing dates to the 1870s, but the highway bridge was rebuilt in the 1960s. Since the 1970s, the railroad trestle has been used as part of the Red Jacket Trail. The Red Jacket flour mill was located downstream from this point in the late 19th Century.

Sakatah Singing Hills Trail C-8 Follow 39 miles of abandoned railroad grade from Mankato (the trail begins on Lime Valley Road, just past the intersection of Riverfront Drive and Hwy. 14) to Faribault. The blacktopped trail meanders through rich farmland and small towns and follows several lakes, including Madison and Cannon, where there are swimming beaches. There are parks and rest stops in communities every few miles. The trail, which intersects Sakatah State Park, is open for biking, hiking, in-line skating and cross country skiing. Red Jacket Bike Trail G/H-5 The Red Jacket Trail begins at Rasmussen Park in Mankato and travels about 13 miles through open countryside, beside the Minnesota River and over three railroad trestles (including its namesake, the 550-foot-long Red Jacket) to Rapidan. Several wooden bridges and a landmark tunnel under the new southern bypass add charm to the trail. Minnesota River Trail E-6 Follow the Minnesota River on bike, foot or in-line skates from Veteran’s Memorial Bridge at Lind Street in North Mankato, through downtown Mankato to Sibley Park in west Mankato. Seven Mile Creek Trail Just three miles north of Mankato on Hwy. 169, you’ll find seven miles of hiking trails that cover 600 acres of wooded park. Picnic shelters and grills are scattered throughout the park and along the creek. Williams Minneopa Learning Center With two miles of paved trails, the Williams Minneopa Learning Center (located about three miles west of Mankato on Hwy. 68) is considered one of the best handicapped-accessible nature centers in the state. The paths traverse wildlife reserves, prairie vegetation, Indian mounds and an Indian village site. Information and comfort sites are set up throughout the center. Minneopa State Park G-1 You could spend most of a day mesmerized by the waterfall, but there are plenty of other things to do as well. Hike along the trails that encircle the falls, bird watch, visit the old mill or camp in one of the picturesque sites. 507.389.5464 Bluff Park & Riverview Park C-4 Their names give them away: These two parks in North Mankato are spectacular for the views they afford. The trails are just an added bonus. Rasmussen Woods G/H-5 The wooded trails surrounding the Elks Nature Center at Rasmussen Woods are ideal for hikers, birdwatchers and anyone who loves nature. The woods are located just off of Stoltzman Road. Sibley Park F-3/4 Sibley is one of the oldest parks in Greater Mankato. Beautiful walking trails, gorgeous flowers, picnic shelters and a petting zoo set Sibley apart from the rest. Spring Lake Park D-5 North Mankato’s Spring Lake Park features a large duck pond providing onlookers the opportunity to hand feed ducks and geese. Plenty of shelters, trails, playground equipment and a sand-bottom pool make this the perfect park for the family. Minnemishinona Falls F-1 Tucked into the woods about 4 miles west of North Mankato on County Road 41 (also known as Judson Bottom Road), Minnemishinona Falls is most spectacular in the spring. The site, however, is beautiful all year round.

Land of Memories Park F-3 Rustic, relaxing camping close to Mankato. One hundred acres of beautiful scenery and abundant wildlife surrounding 47 camping sites, with a variety of open, grassy areas, shaded, wooded sites and secluded spots to camp along the Minnesota River for both tents and recreational vehicles. Kiwanis Park A-4 The Kiwanis Recreation Area features trails, two dog park areas, a canoe/kayak area, an archery range, restrooms and a picnic shelter open for use throughout the year. A 24-hour Park-andRide lot is available on the north side of the park entry. Park hours are 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. daily. Mount Kato 507.625.3363 mountkato.com I-3 Before the snow flies and after it melts again, Mount Kato turns its attention to mountain biking. Slightly more than seven miles of mountain bike trails are accessible during the non-winter months.
