GREATER MAN K ATO

outdoor adventure arts + culture family fun authentic experiences

history

Mankato was originally named “Mahkato”, meaning “greenish-blue earth”, by its early inhabitants, the Dakota. Mankato is located at the confluence of the Minnesota and Blue Earth Rivers. In 1880, Mankato was the fourth-largest city in Minnesota with a population of 5,500. Today, more than 50,000 people call Mankato and North Mankato home. The town of Mankato was founded in 1852 when Parsons K. Johnson and Henry Jackson staked claims along the banks of the Minnesota River. The city was established on land purchased in the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux between the U.S. Government and the Dakota. The breaking of this treaty by the government led to the U.S.-Dakota conflict of 1862. North Mankato, which sits just across the Minnesota River from Mankato, was established in 1898. The first bridge between North Mankato and Mankato was an iron truss bridge constructed in 1879. The bridge represented a partnership between the cities that continues to this day. Many memorials and buildings have been preserved to commemorate the diverse and important history that has shaped the Greater Mankato area. These historical attractions are must-see sites for visitors. Museums and historical sites encourage you to discover vivid stories from days gone by. Be sure to check out the Blue Earth County Historical Society, the historic R.D. Hubbard House, Betsy-Tacy Society and the Nicollet County Historical Society during your visit.

MINNEOPA STATE PARK The word “Minneopa” comes from the Dakota language and is interpreted to mean “water falling twice,” referring to the beautiful waterfalls of the Minneopa Creek at Minneopa State Park. Here, you can walk the trail which encircles the falls, leading down a limestone stairway to the valley below. Ascend the opposite side of the creek and enjoy a panoramic view of the valley which reveals the underlying geology of this area. Visit Seppmann Mill, a wind-driven grist mill fashioned in German style from native stone and lumber, or hike through oak savanna and native prairie grasslands overlooking the scenic Minnesota River Valley. Bison have been reintroduced to Minneopa State Park. This herd is unique, having high quality genetics descending from the type of bison Lewis and Clark gazed upon in the 1830s. The Minnesota Bison Conservation Herd is managed in partnership between the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Minnesota Zoo to preserve genetically diverse bison for the enjoyment of all people. Visitors can drive through the enclosed 331 acres of the park to catch a glimpse of these beautiful giants.

BUT FIRST, COFFEE

FAMILY-FRIENDLY

With multiple institutions of higher learning in the Greater Mankato area, it’s no surprise that coffee shops are so popular. Local favorites include The Coffee Hag on Riverfront Drive, Beans Coffee House on Belgrade Avenue in Lower North Mankato, the Fillin’ Station, and River Rock Coffee & Tea, both on Front Street.

Did somebody say “pizza”? This quintessential family favorite can be found at one of Mankato’s many classics, like Pagliai’s on Front Street, Jake’s Stadium Pizza on the University campus, or Dino’s Pizzeria in Lower North Mankato. No matter which you choose, you can’t go wrong sharing a cheesy, hot pie with some of your favorite people.

Speaking of beans, hometown roasters Beans Coffee Company sells bags of its beans and individual steaming cups at Tandem Bagels, located on 2nd Street in the City Center. Pick up a dark roast to compliment a freshly baked, cream cheese smeared bagel or mouthwatering breakfast sandwich.

A legendary Mankato must-do is Zanz Mexican Restaurant on Mankato’s hilltop. Fill up the whole family with tacos, tostadas, burritos or the famous Zanz cheese chilitos. Pub 500 is so welcoming, even your dog will feel at home on their pet-friendly patio. And everyone can find a favorite here, whether it’s an appetizer of poutine, a Cajun chicken pita, fish tacos, a hickory burger or a gluten-free grain, veggie and protein bowl. Who wouldn’t toast to that? The celebrated Tav on the Ave serves up a sports bar ambiance complete with wings, waffle fries, roll-ups, burgers and malts. It doesn’t get more down-home Mankato than at Happy Chef. Pancakes, French toast, patty melts and senior specials reign - but kids love pushing the statue’s button to hear a few words of wisdom straight from the Happy Chef’s mouth.
