The Greater Mankato area has a rich history dating back to the 17th century. The Dakota people were the original inhabitants of the area, and the land held significant cultural and spiritual importance to them.
In the 1680s, French explorers arrived, followed by American settlers in the 19th century.
The city of Mankato was officially organized in 1858, and North Mankato was established in 1898. The two cities have grown together over time, forming a vibrant community. The area’s history is marked by various events, including the US-Dakota War of 1862, which had a profound impact on the region.
Today, Greater Mankato is a thriving area with a diverse population and a strong economy centered on agribusiness, healthcare, education, manufacturing, printing, and packaging. It is home to Minnesota State University, Mankato, and offers a variety of cultural, recreational, and educational opportunities. The word “Minneopa” comes from the Dakota language and is interpreted to mean “water falling twice,” referring to the beautiful waterfalls of the Minneopa Creek at Minneopa State Park. Here, you can walk the trail which encircles the falls, leading down a limestone stairway to the valley below. Ascend the opposite side of the creek and enjoy a panoramic view of the valley which reveals the underlying geology of this area. Visit Seppmann Mill, a wind-driven grist mill fashioned in German style from native stone and lumber, or hike through oak savanna and native prairie grasslands overlooking the scenic Minnesota River Valley.
Bison have been reintroduced to Minneopa State Park. This herd is unique, having high quality genetics descending from the type of bison Lewis and Clark gazed upon in the 1830s. The Minnesota Bison Conservation Herd is managed in partnership between the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Minnesota Zoo to preserve genetically diverse bison for the enjoyment of all people. Visitors can drive through the enclosed 331 acres of the park to catch a glimpse of these beautiful giants.
Minneopa State Park
Address: 54497 Gadwall Rd, Mankato
Minneopa State Park is open year-round from 8 am - 10 pm. Self registration for park entry is located outside the Ranger Station on County Road 69/ Gadwall Road on the Falls side of the park, and on the campground side of the park off of Hwy. 68. For current hours and other info, scan the QR code.
Fallenstein Playground
Address: 1875 Howard Dr. W., North Mankato
Highlights: Fallenstein Playground is located at North Mankato’s Caswell Park, one of the premiere softball complexes in the nation. Fallenstein Playground offers children of all abilities the opportunity to play, featuring a wheelchair-friendly rubberized surface, accessible swings, slides and other play equipment, and a shaded picnic area.
Land of Memories Park
Address: 100 Amos Owen Ln., Mankato
Highlights: Situated between the Minnesota and Blue Earth Rivers, this park features trails, a disc golf course, wide open spaces, and 47 camping sites for both tents and RVs. Park is free to access. There is a fee for camping; reservations are required.
Red Jacket Valley Park
Address: 19950 Old Hwy 66, Mankato
Highlights: This scenic park is home to wooded hiking trails and a pond ideal for swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, and fishing. The pond is stocked with sunfish, crappies, perch, and northerns. Park goers can also access the Red Jacket Trail just across the road from the park.
Seven Mile Creek County Park
Address: 1700 Sunrise Dr., St. Peter
Highlights: The park provides access to the Minnesota River for canoeing and kayaking. It also features playgrounds, picnic shelters, sand volleyball courts, and 8 miles of hiking and horseback riding trails through deciduous forest along the bluffs of Seven Mile Creek.
Sibley Park
Address: 900 Mound Ave., Mankato
Highlights: Features walking trails along the river and among beautiful flower gardens, an impressive farm-themed playground, and a seasonal petting zoo. In winter, the park is home to a popular sledding hill, as well as the Kiwanis Holiday Lights display from Black Friday through New Year’s Eve.
Spring Lake Park
Address: 650 Webster Ave., North Mankato
Highlights: This 52-acre park is home to a swim facility, playgrounds, trails, sand volleyball courts, ball fields, picnic shelters, and a small lake with a fishing dock. In winter, it’s a destination for ice skating and sledding, complete with a warming house.
For biking and hiking enthusiasts, Greater Mankato features some of the best trails in the state as well as scenic roadways with wide shoulders and little to moderate traffic. Trail users will follow streams and cross upland and wetland areas, where one may see all kinds of wildlife. You never know what is around the next bend. In addition to the many trails and loops, Greater Mankato also boasts three mountain bike trails: Kiwanis Recreation Area, Mount Kato, and Seven Mile Creek Park.
Did you know? Mankato and North Mankato have been designated a “Bronze” Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists, Washington, D.C.

Take a stroll along Riverfront Drive by Reconciliation Park and you will find the Mni Mural (“mni” means “water” in the Dakota language) on a 500-foot section of the flood wall along the Minnesota River. The mural illustrates what the river looked like before the area was settled and incorporates depictions of fish native to the Minnesota River. The mural helps highlight the flood wall stretching from the Depot to Reconciliation Park, drawing attention to the trail system access.

CityArt Walking Sculpture Tour is an opportunity to enjoy art out in the open. The tour features 32 sculptures from artists across the U.S. in mediums ranging from stainless steel to fused glass to found objects throughout the City Center. Vote for your favorite and help choose The People’s Choice Award. The sculpture awarded People’s Choice receives a $1,000 prize for the artist.
Silo Art is an awe-inspiring mural that wraps 135-foot-tall silos in Old Town. Guido van Helten, an international artist painted the mural on the Ardent Mills silos from 2019 to 2020. The design brings together the shared ideals of community, diversity, and inclusion; and it pays respect to history while encouraging a positive dialogue on the future identity of the Mankato area.
CityArt On The Go is an exhibit of over 20 traffic signal box murals, transforming everyday infrastructure into colorful art. No matter where you are in the CIty Center, art is close by!

Highlights: The CityArt Public Art Tour is a self-guided tour of over 40 unique pieces of art, including the People’s Choice and Jurors’ Purchase Award winners from previous Walking Sculpture Tours, and the new public art installed in Old Town in 2018.

There are more than 20 public schools and nine charter and parochial schools in Greater Mankato.
Minnesota State University, Mankato is a comprehensive four-year university and the second-largest public higher education institution in Minnesota. Minnesota State Mankato is comprised of more than 14,000 students, including more than 1,300 international students from 97 different countries. The university offers more than 130 undergraduate programs and 90 graduate programs.
South Central College, North Mankato and Faribault is a comprehensive community and technical college. Programs are offered on campus, online, or in hybrid format. The college’s academic programs serve more than 4,000 students annually with degrees that prepare students to start or advance in rewarding careers after graduation, or transfer to a four-year institution to pursue a bachelor’s degree.
Greater Mankato has a strong and responsive education system, from pre-school to college and beyond. Our five higher education institutions have a combined average annual enrollment of 26,000 post-secondary students, and graduating 5,000 students each year.
Gustavus Adolphus College, Saint Peter is a nationally recognized, private, coeducational liberal arts college affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), and is host to the famed Nobel Conference. Bethany Lutheran College, Mankato is a Christian higher education institution providing a challenging academic environment where personal mentoring guides students to pursue knowledge, truth, and discernment for productive and fulfilling lives.
