F&P Georgia Celebrating Increasing Success!

In October 2000, F&P Georgia chose to locate in Floyd County, dramatically increasing the presence of Tier I automotive manufacturers in the community. Since production began 11 years ago, F&P Georgia has supplied Honda and Nissan with critically important subframe, suspension and ancillary components (e.g., accelerator and brake pedals, stays, stops, splash guards, and stiffeners). During that period, the company has expanded its product lines and capabilities five times, investing $98 million in capital and creating 270 primary paying jobs for the community. F&P Georgia’s most recent expansion was in July of this year which created 100 jobs! F&P Georgia has achieved this success by employing a technically savvy workforce knowledgeable in specialized manufacturing. The majority of F&P Georgia’s workforce consists of Floyd County residents, who create highquality, cost competitive parts for the Tier I automotive industry. Between 2008 and the present, Honda has bestowed awards on F&P Georgia for manufacturing superior service parts, effective and efficient delivery strategies, and high-quality performance. In addition, it received Honda’s Green Factory Achievement Award in 2009. The company’s operations include stamping (with both 1,000-ton and 3,000-ton presses), welding, painting, and assembly. These operations must be in perfect sync to maintain its just-in-time manufacturing environment. Equally important is the Materials Services Team, which manages the internal supply chain’s accuracy. Additionally, F&P Georgia maintains an internal engineering department to manage the dies used in production and a quality Yuichi Fukuda, F&P Georgia department to ensure President, meeting with that its products are 100% community leaders in

compliant with OEM automotive customer standards. The Production Control department schedules these operations in an efficient manner to manage component inventory and work-in-process to assure a controlled flow of parts throughout the facility. All of these operations are tied together by an exceptional Systems Integration Group, which uses state of the art hardware and software to help associates. F&P Georgia has also proven itself a dedicated corporate citizen and a proud member of the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce, participating in Rome-Floyd 20/20 and Leadership Rome. In addition, the company is a business partner of the Floyd County Schools College and Career Academy (serving on the Board of Directors) and participates in the Youth Apprenticeship Program, permitting it to help today’s students become tomorrow’s workforce. On the lighter side, F&P Georgia supports Trout Unlimited’s Annual Chili Cook-Off and Rome’s Christmas parade. Floyd County is very fortunate to have such a dynamic and socially committed business. For more information about F&P Georgia, visit its website at http://www.fandpgeorgia.com and the Chamber’s online and mobile-friendly business directory at www.romega.com.

CHRISTIE’S O F F I C E S U P P LY SMALL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT When Jim Christie retired from the Air Force in 1960, he returned to Rome and began working for Dennis Hodge’s Office Supply Company at 402 West 3rd Street. From there, he continued his career by going to work for Daniels Office Supply in 1968. After a few years of getting his feet wet in the office supply industry, he decided to go into business for himself. In 1972, Christie’s Office Supply opened for business in a small building located at 215 East 1st Street. He spent six years at that location while growing his business and then moved to 100 Broad Street in 1978 where his business has been located ever since. Regarding the reason he decided to go into business for himself, Mr. Christie replied, “I just wanted to do things for myself rather than for somebody else.” True to the entrepreneurial spirit, Mr. Christie embarked on the journey of business ownership and never looked back. On the topic of his location in the Historic Cotton Block, Mr. Christie added, “It has been a great location for us.” The business has been a downtown Rome landmark for almost 35 years, and this year Christie’s proudly celebrates its 40th anniversary. Through the years, Christie’s continues to stay competitive while maintaining a strong focus on hometown personal service. Christie’s offers a complete line of office supplies, including business machines, office furniture, computer supplies, toners, and Brother® machines, and Brother® supplies. Christie’s is also an authorized Brother® service center. Mr. Christie also emphasized that the enterprise does a majority of its business locally.

“Everything is done within a 50-mile radius of Rome.” Mr. Christie estimates that approximately 80% of Christie’s business is done in Rome and Floyd County. He owes much of his continued success to a very loyal customer base, confirming the importance of doing business locally to support the local economy. Other factors contributing to the success of his business, Mr. Christie wisely added, are the importance of “giving customers good service, keeping the prices low, and giving good quality products.” After all these years, Christie’s Office Supply has held to the timeless standards of customer service and competitive product offerings. Mr. Christie thoroughly enjoys many aspects of his job. “I am fortunate that I can do my job with a lot of satisfaction. I enjoy helping our customers find solutions.” Given that Christie’s has been in business for 40 years, Mr. Christie enjoys working with his coworkers, several of whom have been with the business for more than 20 years, and seeing many of his past employees grow up and develop professionally. As a long-time Broad Street business, Christie’s Office Supply has become very well connected to the Rome and Floyd County community by supporting as many civic programs as possible, both through financial support and through helping to promote charitable events. In the past, Christie’s has supported the Northwest Georgia Housing Authority golf tournament. When asked why it is important for Christie’s Office Supply to be a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Christie replied,

Jim Christie hard at work fulfilling orders for local businesses.

“I support the Chamber of Commerce because they support the community. They help the community to grow, achieve better things for the community, create jobs, promote industry and business, and I’m for that!” In addition, Mr. Christie added some encouraging words, “I hope the Chamber keeps doing what they’re doing. They’re doing a good job. They’ve done a lot of good for the community.” By continuing to offer new and innovative products and provide exceptional customer service consistently for 40 successful years, Christie’s Office Supply continues to be a great asset to downtown Rome and serve as an excellent example of corporate citizenship in Floyd County.

THE

SPIRIT of

The opportunity to strive for the American Dream becomes a reality in Rome

On May 21st, 1944, nearly one and a half million Americans (including 150,000 recently naturalized citizens) assembled in New York’s Central Park to observe “I Am an American Day” (now Constitution Day), created to celebrate the promise of the American nation and the people who compose it. Among the speakers was the great Judge Learned Hand, who began his speech, “The Spirit of Liberty,” by affirming the commonality of all Americans, immigrants all:

Some of us have chosen America as the land of our adoption; the rest have come from those who did the same. For this reason we have some right to consider ourselves a picked group, a group of those who had the courage to break from the past and brave the dangers and the loneliness of a strange land. What was the object that nerved us, or those who went before us, to this choice? We sought liberty – freedom from oppression, freedom from want, freedom to be ourselves.

Rome recently witnessed an event redolent of that day at Central Park and the sentiments commemorated there. On September 14th, 2012, the Honorable Walter E. Johnson, United States Magistrate Judge, presided over a ceremony at Rome’s Federal Building in which approximately 50 people were naturalized as citizens of the United States. These new citizens came to America from all over the world, including Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East. Becoming a United States citizen is a substantial accomplishment. Aspirants must first apply to become lawful permanent residents (a status granted to roughly 900,000 immigrants each year), who are selected based on a number of criteria, including family relationships with current U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents, economically useful aptitudes or skills, refugee or asylum-seeker status, and diversity. Lawful permanent

residents who have maintained continuous residence and presence in the United States for three to five years may apply for citizenship. Applicants must establish that they have good moral character, can read, write, and speak basic English, and know the fundamentals of United States history and government. Thus, each person naturalized on September 14th has demonstrated serious commitment to becoming a U.S. citizen and has recognized the many benefits of doing so, and the benefits are manifest. America possesses the world’s most productive, innovative economy and tremendous material bounty. However, economic opportunity is only one part of what makes U.S. citizenship valuable. Such was the theme of the September 14th ceremony (which included renditions of “The StarSpangled Banner” and “God Bless America”). After each new citizen stated his or her name and country of origin, Judge Johnson administered the Oath of Allegiance, followed by a solemn but joyful recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, congratulations, and a short speech about the benefits and responsibilities citizenship confers. In her address, Rome’s Mayor Evie McNiece complemented his remarks, counseling that respect for the law and unconditional love of country accompany the wealth of possibility present in America, a wealth social, spiritual, and familial, as well as material. After the ceremony’s conclusion, each new citizen posed for a photograph with Judge Johnson and received greetings and gift bags from the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution. The event served as a powerful reminder that, despite our nation’s difficulties, it remains a beacon of hope in the world, promising above all, as Judge Hand recognized, liberty. At the conclusion of her speech, Mayor McNiece left the new citizens no room to doubt whether that promise was theirs as well: “I love America. America is my home and today I welcome you to my home, not as guests, but as family. Congratulations, and may God bless you and may He continue to bless the United States of America.” October 2012 11

NEWCOMER PROFILE

Dr. Ryan Cox Meet the Newest Member of the Pridemore Orthodontics team

Upon entering Pridemore Orthodontics on John Maddox Drive, one is greeted by a portrait of a lion, photographed in Kenya by Dr. Ben Pridemore, an avid nature photographer. The photograph depicts a pride of lions in which a mother watches carefully over her cubs, representing for Dr. Pridemore the concern and care Pridemore Orthodontics, an experienced team focused on customer satisfaction, exemplifies in patient care.   To help continue the legacy of excellent service and care, Dr. Pridemore, who has practiced in Rome for over 40 years, began searching for the right person to join his practice. Dr. Ryan Cox was referred to him by a consultant who described him as an intelligent, motivated, and accomplished young gentleman. The consultant met him at the American Association of Orthodontists’ annual convention. Dr. Pridemore began actively recruiting Dr. Cox in 2010. They developed a personal and professional relationship after traveling together to various out-of-state conferences. In December 2011, Dr. Pridemore asked Dr. Cox to become a partner at Pridemore Orthodontics.   There is no question that Dr. Cox, who at 29, is a remarkable addition. A graduate of the University of Georgia, he earned his B.S. magna cum laude in microbiology from the Honors Program. He then graduated at the top of his class from the Medical College of Georgia where he earned his Doctorate of Dental Medicine. After dental school, he completed a three-year orthodontic residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he also earned an M.S. In addition, Dr. Cox recently passed the board examination of the American Board of Orthodontics, which requires careful analysis of numerous case studies.   Dr. Pridemore could not be more pleased with his decision, saying that Dr. Cox possesses “God-given 14 October 2012

skills that take many orthodontists years to learn.” Dr. Pridemore expressed particular pleasure that Dr. Cox has already become a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics: “It is very rare just to graduate from school and become a Diplomate of the board.”   A native Georgian, Dr. Cox is similarly enthusiastic and very excited to join the Rome community. “Rome is awesome! We’ve met so many great people; everyone has been very nice.” He and his wife Amy moved to Rome in May and recently celebrated the arrival of their first child, Addison Kate, which, he joked, has left him less time for his hobbies (which include fly fishing, hunting, golf, running, and Georgia football): “Being a new dad takes up every moment of every day, and I couldn’t be happier.”   It is a great honor to welcome this driven and accomplished newcomer into our community. Congratulations to Dr. Pridemore for finding such a partner, and a warm welcome to Dr. Cox, Amy, and Addison Kate!

Well Done, Bravos!

Congratulations to the 2012 Rome Braves for going from worst to first, and competing in their first playoff game since 2006. The team’s chances at reaching the playoffs looked in doubt with early struggles throughout the first half of the season. The team only managed to win 18 out of 70 games during this stretch. However, despite the slow start, they were determined to not let it affect the second half of the season. In the minor leagues, the 140game season is broken down into two halves. The team with the winning record from the first half of the season faces off against the team with the winning record from the second half. The winner of the series then represents the Southern Division in the South Atlantic League Championship against the Nothern Division victors.

During the Minor League AllStar break, the team was able to regroup, restock the roster with new players from the MLB draft, and make adjustments with a few key players. Those improvements proved extremely successful as the Rome Braves quickly started the second half of the season winning 13 games in a row, setting a Rome Braves record in the process! They continued winning throughout the the rest of the season and found themselves the second half champions and on their way to their first playoff game in six years to take on the Asheville Tourists. Although winning the first game in the series, the Braves Double-A squad lost the final two games of the series to Asheville .

Despite the loss, the team looks to have the pieces in place to make another playoff run in 2013.

A special thanks to the players, coaches and staff for an exciting 2012 season for the Greater Rome community. Go BRAVES!
