John Quinlivan, Chairman of Rome Floyd Chamber and CEO of Redmond Regional Medical Center, Jamie Doss, Mayor of Rome, Rhonda Wallace, Chair of Floyd County Commission, Bob Shinn, CEO of Candor USA, and John Good, COO and Co-founder of Candor, celebrate the announcement of Candor USA. A group of Candor employees gather to celebrate the announcement of Candor USA.

The Rome Floyd Chamber, the City of Rome and Floyd County announced on October 19,2017 that Candor USA will invest $39 million in Rome and Floyd County and create 675 jobs over the next five years. Candor has developed a smartphone app and chatbot to help Millennial consumers find appropriate health care coverage plans. The app and its associated software platform also incorporate tools and support for partner insurance agencies, health insurance carriers, and health care providers. In addition to providing access to health care coverage plans for Millennial consumers, Candor enables secure and instant transactions and provides agents and carriers with the ability to visualize market trends and business performance. “Our community is home to approximately 100,000 people, with a median age of 35, representing a significant group of Millennials,” said John Good, COO and co-founder, Candor. “We launched Candor to make health insurance simple to buy and easy to understand for this population. This is essential, because 97% of Americans don’t know what their health insurance covers, and 63% of bankruptcies are due to unexpected health expenses,” he said. “We’re pleased to choose Rome as our headquarters, and excited to bring new professional jobs, and a vibrant company culture, to this welcoming city.” The company has created more than 40 jobs to date in Floyd County, and plans to lease several office spaces in Downtown Rome. “We are thrilled Candor has chosen

Rome and Floyd County as its home. Access to health insurance is of vital importance to our community. We have an infrastructure and skilled labor force in place, ready to meet the day to day operations of this innovative business model.” Said City of Rome Mayor Jamie Doss. “This is a tremendous gain for Rome and Floyd County," said Rhonda Wallace, Floyd County Commission Chair. “With the announcement of Candor, quality jobs are added in our community, attracting more bright, young professionals and further solidifying Rome and Floyd County as an Innovation and Technology Hub.” “We congratulate Bob Shinn, John Good and the rest of the team at Candor, and are grateful for the relationships developed over the years that brought them to Rome and Floyd County,” said chair of the Rome Floyd Chamber, John Quinlivan. “Candor appreciates our Quality of Life, vibrant downtown, and rivers and hills which are attractive to their current workforce and will, they know, help attract the future workers upon whom we will all depend.” Special thank you to the Georgia Department of Economic Development, Georgia Department of Community Affairs, Georgia Power Company, City of Rome, Floyd County, the Rome-Floyd County Development Authority, the Development Authority of Floyd County, Georgia Northwestern Technical College, and Floyd County Schools College and Career Academy for their support.

Jowers-Sklar Insurance

BUSINESS

Second Generation Family Business Celebrates 40 Years and Experiences Growth

Mrs. Jerrie Jowers is joined by daughter Lauren Jowers Sklar and granddaughters Emma and Abby Sklar.

Marc Sklar, Owner of Jowers-Sklar Insurance, and Scott Preston, President of Citizens First Bank- Synovus, network at Jowers-Sklar Insurance 40 year celebration.

Jowers-Sklar Insurance celebrates 40 years with a Ribbon Cutting Celebration.

Samuel Dewey Jowers started the Dewey Jowers Insurance Agency in October of 1977. Mr. Jowers started his business without a single client, and only his wife to help him. Mr. Jowers purchased Barba, Hall and Hogg in 1999 shortly after his Son-in-law Marc Sklar joined the business in 1998. The company has now grown to 13 employees today and it serves not only Rome and Floyd County but also different areas around the country. When Mr. Jowers passed away in 2003, his son-in-law purchased the business and began to build on its firm foundation. “There are a lot of great insurance agencies in Rome and Floyd County,” said Marc Sklar, Owner of Jowers-Sklar Insurance. “We have many clients in Rome and Floyd County, but we didn’t want to just continue passing around clients between different firms. It was important that we find something to help our firm grow by providing expertise to specific business categories." The personal and business insurance clients in Rome and Floyd County make up about 50 to 60 percent of Jowers Sklar Insurance, but Mr. Sklar wanted to grow their business and their imprint outside of the community. Mr. Sklar decided that niche insurance would be the best way to grow their business. Niche insurance, allowed the firm to specialize in several different areas including franchise restaurants, franchise child care centers and equipment rental facilities.. “Everyone wants an expert,” said Mr. Sklar. “We pride ourselves in being that expert in those niches. We research meticulously and learn everything we can about the area.”

The expertise in these niches has allowed the firm to write business in 14 states and growing. Jowers-Sklar Insurance has become a known name around the country, while continuing to remain prevalent in the Rome and Floyd County community. “It all started right here in Rome and Floyd County for us,” said Mr. Sklar. “It is so important for us to be a part of this community and to continue to grow here and provide jobs for hardworking members of the community.” 7 | Momentum

Stephanie Bradshaw, Co-Owner of The Stitchery, and Susan Horton, Co-Owner of The Stitchery, sit on a bed donated by Woodstock Furniture & Mattress Outlet to display quilts.

Stephanie Bradshaw, LR XXXV, and Susan Horton, Co-Owners of The Stitchery, combine Ms. Bradshaw's love of interior design with Ms. Horton's passion for sewing to create a unique shoppe in Rome and Floyd County. The Stitchery offers fabrics, sewing machines, vinyl, classes and more to the Northwest Georgia. The shoppe has become a destination shop for sewing enthusiasts and quilters from all over the Southeast. Since opening over five and a half years ago the shoppe has grown so much that the women had to move its location to 9 Central Plaza. The new location offers more retail space and large classrooms for classes. “We wanted to grow organically, and at the same time we wanted to offer our clients the best service,” said Ms. Bradshaw. “Moving our store allowed us to give our customers more options and even more room to learn.”2017 has been a great year for The Stitchery, and Ms. Bradshaw and Ms. Horton are thrilled with the growth. The store has even been named one of University of Georgia’s Bulldog 100 as a fast-growing business owned or operated by UGA Alumni. In addition to the honor of Bulldog 100 the store was featured in the Fall/Winter issue of Quilt Sampler. The Stitchery is already a destination for many quilters when vacationing, and the magazine brings even more attention to the Rome and Floyd County business. “Being featured in Quilt Sampler has already led to purchases from California, Oregon, Washington and New Hampshire,” said Ms. Bradshaw. “The magazine is used somewhat as a guide for quilters and we expect a lot of visitors who found us through the magazine.” Ms. Bradshaw and Ms. Horton recently spoke to the Board of Directors at the Greater Rome Convention and Visitors Bureau about the impact they are having in the community.

EDUCATION

Georgia Highlands College

Dr. Donald Green, President of Georgia Highlands College stands in the courtyard at the main campus in Floyd County.

Dr. Donald Green, President of Georgia Highlands College, spends time with students in the Student Center at the Floyd County Campus.

Georgia Highlands College opened its doors in 1970 as Floyd Junior College. The college was built on property originally owned by Jim Morris, and on November 5, 1968, Floyd County voters approved a bond issued for $3,215,000 to finance the purchase of land, grading and improvements of the site, and construction. The school began with 545 students on one campus and now has expanded to five campus locations with over 6,000 students. The Floyd County campus remains the heartbeat of Georgia Highlands College. “The Floyd campus enrolls a fourth of our student body and serves as the central point of operations for all of our locations and as our original site,” said President Dr. Donald Green. “There is so much history within the 47 years the college has been in Rome. GHC succeeds when our students succeed, and that happens when there is a strong partnership between GHC and the community. It’s this togetherness of college and community that will continue to benefit the students and future workforce of Northwest Georgia beyond anything else.”

Fact: Floyd County voters gave the land to the State of Georgia to establish the college.

The school has not only grown in student size and campus locations over the last four decades, but also with degrees. Georgia Highlands offers Associate Degrees in Arts and Science with over 30 areas of study, and has recently added two new bachelor’s degrees to their catalogue, a Bachelor of Business Administration in Healthcare Management and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Logistics and Supply Chain Management. These are additions to GHC’s four-year offerings, which already included a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Dental Hygiene. These programs are a perfect fit for the Rome and Floyd County community that is known as a medical hub and has a thriving industry.

“The Rome Floyd Community has a large number of healthcare-based employers and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Healthcare Management meets a need for a still rapidly growing job industry, and also helps establish Georgia Highlands College as the destination for Healthcare Education in Northwest Georgia,” said Vice President for Academic Affairs, Renva Watterson. Georgia Highlands College has become a name recognized around the state and around the country. The college was recently named a top ten value college by Great Value College and designated one of the most affordable nursing programs in the country by GeriatricNursing.com and named as the most affordable four-year college in Georgia by Scholarship Owl. At the state level, Georgia Highlands College is making a name for itself with its impressive $149 million economic impact for the 2016 Fiscal Year. “Approaching an economic impact of nearly $150 million is a milestone for us at GHC,” said Dr. Green. “We have worked hard to enroll more students, and to graduate more students. Our goal is to continue directly impacting and supporting the community by graduating career-ready students with little to no debt upon completion by serving as the University System of Georgia’s primary access institution in the region. This coupled with adding more degree programs that serve our local labor market, like our new Bachelor’s in Logistics and Supply Chain Management and our Bachelor’s in Healthcare Management, helps us to continuously strengthen our partnership with communities throughout Northwest Georgia and grow our economic impact year after year.” 10 | Momentum

What is your favorite Chamber event and why? The Business EXPO is my favorite Chamber event. This is the opportunity for all business professionals to showcase what they have worked so hard to build, and what they are proud to be a part of. It is also a platform for all business professionals to come together, share ideas and get to know one another. It is a very supportive environment where the Chamber does an excellent job of promoting the event as a major community tradition.
